I managed to break all records this week. I was burdened with little technical problem, but apart from that I was as slow as never before and for that reason this is the latest Dublin Event Guide ever. Inexcusable, I know. The only saving is that there is now this wonderful and cool Dublin Event Guide Smart Phone App<\/strong> so even if you weren’t able to do your weekend preparation earlier today, at least you can bring the Dublin Event Guide now with you if you have a Smart Phone. http:\/\/m.dublineventguide.com<\/a><\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

It is November and that should be one of the quietest months of the year, but this week is just super busy. There are four (!) runs (but only one is free). And there are four (!!) festivals that either finish, start or are in full swing this week: Design Week, Science Week, Dublin Book Festival and YARN-Bray Storytelling Festival. That doesn’t look like a quiet November.<\/p>\n

Now, what events would I pick? Hmmm, Have a look at the Science Week events. Then also the Dublin Mish Mash on Saturday and the Exchange Art & Craft Market on Saturday. On Sunday I recomment the Fusion Sundays Market and definitely the Italian Food Market “Sagra dell’Arosticino”.<\/p>\n

On Monday have a look at the Mexcian Spirits event if you are into Mezcal. On Tuesday, the Milk & Cookies Stories and the Alchemist Cafe have to battle it out. On Wednesday my choice would be Pitchify. And on Thursday, I gave we (I!) have to give up our resistance and join in in the Christmas Spirit when the lights are switched on in Grafton Street MUCH too early.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Kreyol Ireland Konexion is presenting a Caribbean Culture Day in Turks Head on Saturday. In the afternoon from 15:00-18:00 there will be Mini Workshops for Dance and Storytelling and you can taste some caribbean food. In the evening a Caribbean Night & Show will take place with a Ziloka Band and two DJs. Tickets are EUR 5 for the afternoon and EUR 10 for the evening or EUR 12 for the whole day. (Children under 10 are free!). JCI Dublin (Junior Chamber International) aran an event 09 November for young people called “Leading for Growth”, aimed at young people in their 20s and 30s who are interested in taking charge of their future and wish to help lead the change. For this leadership summit for young professionals, JCI made two tickets available and the lucky winners were Camille Wainer and Pauline Farrelly. It is a web app that works on most smartphones and will allow you to bring the “Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events)” with you when you are out and about. It will also allow you to check out the current events when you are away from your computer or when the e-zine arrives late AGAIN on a Friday evening.The web app works on Android and on iOS and you can directly access it by putting http:\/\/m.dublineventguide.com<\/a> in your mobile browser. There is an app in the iOS store and it will be in the Google Play store in the next few days, but you don’t need to dwonload anything.<\/p>\n

Better Together Video Competition – Support the Soul Festival!<\/h2>\n

The Better Together Campaign is running again. Better Together intends to generate support for hundreds of charities, community groups, clubs and associations across the country by encouraging the public to support the good causes. Better Together was founded in 2010 by The Wheel (A support and representative body connecting community and voluntary organisations and charities across Ireland).<\/p>\n

One of the components of the Better Together campaign is a video competition. 120 charities from all over Ireland (from animal welfare organisations via mental health support groups a wheelchair karate club) have submitted their videos and can win a prize of EUR 3,000 if they get enough support. And this is where you come in. You can support a charity by voting for their video. Voting will be open until 19 November and you can vote once every 24 hours until then. Voting started on 24 Sept and some charities already have thousands of votes.<\/p>\n

The Musical Youth Foundation is one of the charities and they need some help! You know the Musical Youth Foundation if you have ever heard of or been at the brilliant Dublin City Soul Festival. Because it is the Musical Youth Foundation, founded by Chris Maher, which runs this yearly free festival tirelessly for the last 6 years. If you ever have enjoyed the Soul Picnic in May in Merrion Square or any other Soul Festival event, now is your time to give back. Vote for the Musical Youth Foundation at http:\/\/www.bettertogether.ie\/content\/music-better-together-2012<\/a> and vote often!<\/p>\n

Man on the Moon is taking place in conjunction with Science Week 2012.<\/p>\n

Artist, Pervaneh Matthews has encaptured the twelve men who were on the moon in her sepia watercolours on line board and these are complimented by a selection of lunar landscape oil paintings by Frank O’Dea which also feature tiny pieces of actual lunar meteroite embedded into the artwork.<\/p>\n

Design Week 2012<\/h2>\n

The Design Week 2012 takes place from 05-11 Nov. It is a week during which design organisations, collectives, colleges, companies and studios package and promote design related events. There are walks, talks, launches, exhibitions and workshops and the audience is designers who design things, the business community who purchase design services and the public who are the end users of all designers\u2019 services.<\/p>\n

A large amount of events take place over the 7 days of the festival and most of them are free, however some require pre-booking.<\/p>\n

It being a Design Week, it seems that the website designer had to go the extra mile TOO FAR! Unfortunately the website is fancy but not overly easy to read if you have a smaller screen. It is also a pity that there is no downloadable PDF that shows all events. But if you go to http:\/\/www.designweek.ie\/full-schedule\/ <\/a>and click on the date between 05 and 11, you will find all the relevant information. Fancy, but more work. I guess that is the price you have to pay sometimes for a nice look!?<\/p>\n

The Design Week 2012 takes place from 05-11 Nov. It is a week during which design organisations, collectives, colleges, companies and studios package and promote design related events. There are walks, talks, launches, exhibitions and workshops and the audience is designers who design things, the business community who purchase design services and the public who are the end users of all designers\u2019 services.<\/p>\n

A large amount of events take place over the 7 days of the festival and most of them are free, however some require pre-booking.<\/p>\n

It being a Design Week, it seems that the website designer had to go the extra mile TOO FAR! Unfortunately the website is fancy but not overly easy to read if you have a smaller screen. It is also a pity that there is no downloadable PDF that shows all events. But if you go to http:\/\/www.designweek.ie\/full-schedule\/ <\/a>and click on the date between 05 and 11, you will find all the relevant information. Fancy, but more work. I guess that is the price you have to pay sometimes for a nice look!?<\/p>\n

The Design Week 2012 takes place from 05-11 Nov. It is a week during which design organisations, collectives, colleges, companies and studios package and promote design related events. There are walks, talks, launches, exhibitions and workshops and the audience is designers who design things, the business community who purchase design services and the public who are the end users of all designers\u2019 services.<\/p>\n

A large amount of events take place over the 7 days of the festival and most of them are free, however some require pre-booking.<\/p>\n

It being a Design Week, it seems that the website designer had to go the extra mile TOO FAR! Unfortunately the website is fancy but not overly easy to read if you have a smaller screen. It is also a pity that there is no downloadable PDF that shows all events. But if you go to http:\/\/www.designweek.ie\/full-schedule\/ <\/a>and click on the date between 05 and 11, you will find all the relevant information. Fancy, but more work. I guess that is the price you have to pay sometimes for a nice look!?<\/p>\n

Milk & Cookies Stores is a Storytelling Open Mic Night on the second Tuesday of each month. The group is founded on the belief that everyone has a story to tell and you can do just aht in a friendly atmosphere. It doesn’t matter if you have a story to tell or just want to listen. \nEvery month there is a theme and this month it will be stories about Bad Things. “About those times when you saw danger coming like a tidal wave of…danger and just let it wash over you. Like a dangershower. Sort of like in The Day After Tomorrow when no-one would listen to the scientists and then they ended up living in a library while the world rearranged itself. Or like real life. Where that is also happening.”<\/p>\n

The choirboys of St. Patrick’s Cathedral Choir School will give a special performance of pieces from their wide-ranging repertoire, both sacred and secular. The choristers (aged eight to 13) will perform a variety of works, ranging from Parry and Walton to Irish favourites “Cockles & Mussels” and “Down by the Salley Gardens”. The concert coincides with the launch of their new CD “In Dublin’s Fair City”. The choir will be directed by Master of Choristers Stuart Nicholson, and will be joined by organist David Leigh; guitarist Victoria Green; and pianist Judith Gannon. Farmleigh Writer In Residence<\/h2>\n

Writer in Residence at Farmleigh this Autumn will be Dublin-born novelist, broadcaster and playwright Joseph O’Connor. He will be organising and participating in a series of events at Farmleigh, including an evening of live music and readings and a workshop for writers. He is the author of the novels ‘Star of the Sea’, and ‘Ghost Light’, and his stage version of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel ‘My Cousin Rachel’ recently played at Dublin’s Gate Theatre.<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountain Walks<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Mountain Partnership is organising regular walks in the Dublin mountains. The November Walks take place on 10 Nov (a 15km \/ 5 hrs strenuous walk), 18 Nov (a 17km \/ 6 hrs strenuous walk) and 25 Nov ( a 15km \/ 5hrs strenuous walk).<\/p>\n

Children’s Referendum – Difficult decision<\/strong><\/p>\n

I once was very active in politics and still have a big interest for it and for democratic reasons, I am a big proponent (Proponent: A person who advocates [is in favour of] a theory, proposal, or project.) of using your right to vote whenever this is possible. So I would strongly suggest that you use your right to vote in the Children’s Referendum if you have that right. I don’t have the right and I know many of you in our 12,000+ strong Dublin Event Guide Community don’t have that right either. If you were allowed to, would you vote Yes or No?<\/p>\n

I find it difficult to decide. Like everybody, I am very much in favour of children’s rights and the government and some organisations that are involved with looking after children want us to think that only a “Yes” vote is good for children. But in recent days I start having my concerns. I don’t think something terrible will happen to children if the decision is Yes on Saturday, but I do think that the constitutional amendment is badly prepared and ignores many aspects the tiny and badly organised No-side rightly raised. In addition I am not convinced that the current articles in the constitution are in soo terrible need of replacement that we need to replace them with something that ignores quite a number of issues.<\/p>\n

So, while I am in favour of the right change, I would probably vote NO to force the government to take the arguments of the No-side into consideration. After that is done, I would vote Yes the next time (if the referendum is still needed). I know this delay would not be ideal for a small number of children, but I think it is more important to get it right the first time.<\/p>\n

Incompetent Government AGAIN<\/strong><\/p>\n

Didn’t the previous government screw up enough for us to deserve a break? Well, it seems the gods are not with us because the current government seems to be not much better. Enda Kenny, who surprisingly was crowned “European of the Year” (http:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/kenny-to-receive-european-of-the-year-award-today-573403.html<\/a> ) has zero control over his bungling cabinet. The Health Minister James Reilly is entrenched in disturbing stories that sound as if they are leftovers from the previous government. Phil Hogan, the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, is as talented and suitable in his job as Martin Cullen was in the previous government. And now the government impressed with their incompetence again: The Supreme Court has ruled today that the Government used public money to influence the upcoming referendum, which is hugely undemocratic because it doesn’t allow a “fair, equal and impartial” process. http:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/supreme-court-overturns-referendum-campaign-challenge-573452.html<\/a> If FOUR Irish Parties (Fianna Fail, Greens, Fine Gael and Labour) all have shown that they are unsuitable to be in government, then we have a bit of a problem!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
