Hi all!<\/p>\n

When I started the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) a bit more than 5 years ago, it took me about 5 minutes to write the mail and to send it to about 10 people. It was so fast because I only wrote about just one single event that took place at the following weekend. Now, 279 weeks later, a LOT has changed. The Dublin Event Guide looks a lot nicer is much easier to read and use and the number of events that is included every week has grown to between 130 and 170 events every week. All these improvements are reflected in the size of the reader community. From 10 people it has grown to more than 12,000 and is growing further every single day.<\/p>\n

About 10% of the event information I get by event organisers sending their information to me. The rest I research by checking though hundreds of web pages every Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Despite the big growth of the Dublin Event Guide, one thing has not changed over the last five years: The work I am doing is still a labour of love and I don’t make any money with it. Consequently, I have (to have) a day job and work on the Dublin Event Guide only in the night. And THIS is the reason why the e-zine and the website update arrive so late on a Friday afternoon\/evening. I fully understand and agree that it would be better if the e-zine would be finished earlier and regularly people send me mails with this as the one thing that they want improved. I am trying to find a solution for that problem, but can’t guarantee anything yet. Today you are getting this newsletter again really really late and I can assure you that I was working non-stop on it for the last 24 hours. :-O Hopefully I will find a solution soon.<\/p>\n

In the meantime I found it interesting that Newsweek, the well established and still very popular magazine, has decided to stop printing the magazine. From 01 January they will only publish the magazine online. Does that mean that the Dublin Event Guide was well ahead of time when 5 years ago it was only published online?<\/p>\n

Online allows a few additional services and that is what will be coming your way next! Very soon actually. I won’t tell you much about it yet. A bit of suspense is fun, but watch out for a mail from me very soon with some big news. ;-)<\/p>\n

Dublin Event Guide – Launch of a new service<\/h2>\n

Yes, I know I am a little secretive about this event! ;-) You will all find out about it very very soon, it is a Dublin Event Guide event and I would LOVE to have all 12,000 of y ou at it, but as you can imagine, this is not so easy. In addition I am not organising this event myself, but it is organised by the company that has contributed sooooo much to the Dublin Event Guide in recent months and who we all have to be very grateful for. The company is called iQContent and I will tell you a good bit more about them next week.<\/p>\n

Today I have FOUR pairs of tickets for the Launch event of a new Dublin Event Guide Service. Many of you might be able to guess what it could be, others are a little more puzzled, but the revelation will reach you soon!<\/p>\n

Halloween at the Leprechaun Museum<\/h2>\n

The National Leprechaun Museum will this year again come alive with restless spirits of Halloween. Take a journey, if you dare, into the dark otherworld of Ireland… a journey through time and space, light and dark, into a world of superstition and frightening reality. Enter a world of hostile fairies, dark spirits, michievous p\u00facas and maevolent S\u00ed-\u00f3gs… A mysterious, frightening and sometimes deadly world lying behind the thin veneer of the world we know.<\/p>\n

This event (for adults) runs from 24 Oct – 04 Nov and there are four performances every night (19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00). The show has a duration of approx 1 hour and you have to be on time. Admission to the show is EUR 20 and you can book online at www.leprechaunmuseum.ie\/halloween<\/a><\/p>\n

At this two day workshop\/training course you will learn how create your presence online, be introduced to web design and social media tools and how to successfully use them. You will find out how to gain more clients and interact with your target market, be searchable online, know if your site is being visited and learn about online advertising.<\/p>\n

Ireland.com – Sold for nearly 500k<\/h2>\n

If you had an ireland.com e-mail address, you know all about it – or if you don’t yet you should check the details immediately: Last week, the Irish Times sold the domain name ireland.com to Tourism Ireland for nearly EUR 500k. Considering that the Irish Times didn’t properly use the domain name anymore, this was a big windfall for the newspaper. For Tourism Ireland? It is nice to have that domain name, but I am convinced that it will not bring any additional tourist to Ireland and then it was extremely expensive for such a vanity domain name. Will the fancy domain name improve the not so impressive discoverireland.ie website content? Not in the slightest! So the challenge is in a completely different area.
\nThe purchase of the domain name also meant that about 15,000 people lost their e-mail address and Tourism Ireland din’t give them any time at all. By 07 November they will not be able to use their e-mail address anymore. It would take me months to move! Tough luck for the ireland.com users. http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/breaking\/2012\/1015\/breaking44.html<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Dealz Ireland has arrived<\/h2>\n

You thought Euro2 has good prices for some items? Euro2 will now be expensive! The British Poundworld chain has arrived in Ireland and is rapidly spreading. Blanchardstown, Dundrum and Stillorgan have markets already and it seems Omni Park Shopping Centre is either planned or open already too. Dealz charges EUR 1.49 for their items, so if you buy two 9V batteries you pay in a 2Euro shop Eur 2 and for the same batteries you pay in Dealz EUR 1.49. Interesting! Let’s see how the new competition will impact the others. http:\/\/www.dealz.ie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Smithfield Horse Fair – Big Changes<\/h2>\n

Have you heard about the Smithfield Horse Fair? It is (no, WAS!) a very very established regular market that took place very first Sunday ot the month. At some time WAY back it must have been a thriving, interesting spectacular full of live and vibrancy. Hpwever in recent years things changed. Smithfield is not really the suitable location for it and it turned out that only one demographic grouping was still selling horses there because the rest of us use buses or cars or bikes. So it became very much a niche event. And it also became an unwanted event. On top of that there were some issues with animal welfare infringements, so this gave DUblin City, the Garda and the animal welfare organisations a perfect opportunity to try doing something against it. But seemingly there are some long standing old rights that don’t make that too easy. After some trouble at a market last year, Dublin City now is about to change the rules. Reduce the market significantly to just a few times per year and charge money for every horse and pony that is sold. The new proposed rules are here http:\/\/www.dublincity.ie\/RecreationandCulture\/CasualTradingLicence\/Pages\/HorseFairControlandFeeBye-Laws.aspx<\/a> Unfortunately I would expect that this will drive the Horse Fair in the undergorund or in the uncontrolled sphere and this will be a lot worse for animal welfare than having a monthly market on Smithfield Square.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Dublin Flamenco Festival is taking place from 15 October. The events are not free, but Pe\u00f1a Flamenca El Indalo are sponsors of the Dublin Event Guide, so it is the least I can do to point you in the direction of their website and events. The Dublin International Short Film and Music Festival is an independent festival dedicated to bring together established musicians and filmmakers in one forum to celebrate the short films. DISFMF is for Short Films that are 15 minutes or less in length and musicians.<\/p>\n

Sounds like an interesting event, but before I tell you about all the great things, I have to complain a little! The Programme in PDF comes back with an I\/O error on two of my computers. Someone seemingly didn’t test it! And the Facebook Page is not a Facebook Page, but a Facebook Profile. That should be a total No No by now. To make things worse, you can’t see the information about the Festival on Facebook unless you become a friend. *shaking_head*<\/p>\n

Now the good things: The festival doesn’t have a huge programme, but most of the programme elements are free and they look very interesting.<\/p>\n

On Fri+Sat the venue is Merchant Arch, 48\/49 Wellington Quay, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 and all events there are free. On Sun the Festival moves to the Sugar Club in Leeson Street, but then there is an admission charge of EUR 10.<\/p>\n

The Dublin International Short Film and Music Festival is an independent festival dedicated to bring together established musicians and filmmakers in one forum to celebrate the short films. DISFMF is for Short Films that are 15 minutes or less in length and musicians.<\/p>\n

Sounds like an interesting event, but before I tell you about all the great things, I have to complain a little! The Programme in PDF comes back with an I\/O error on two of my computers. Someone seemingly didn’t test it! And the Facebook Page is not a Facebook Page, but a Facebook Profile. That should be a total No No by now. To make things worse, you can’t see the information about the Festival on Facebook unless you become a friend. *shaking_head*<\/p>\n

Now the good things: The festival doesn’t have a huge programme, but most of the programme elements are free and they look very interesting.<\/p>\n

On Fri+Sat the venue is Merchant Arch, 48\/49 Wellington Quay, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 and all events there are free. On Sun the Festival moves to the Sugar Club in Leeson Street, but then there is an admission charge of EUR 10.<\/p>\n

Clockwork Orchestra is the Dublin based songwriter Paul Mangan. The three-piece live incarnation of the Clockwork Orchestra are currently touring and will perform a free gig at the Exchange Dublin. Paul Mangan describes his music cryptically this way “His idiosyncratic brand of melody driven music juxtaposes hyperactive synth riffs, melancholic piano balladry and psychedelic string arrangements together to conjure up a strange land of musical toys and colourful characters.” Sure, you have NO idea what the music is about after reading that, so I listened to some of the songs (check the Facebook Event Page for a link). The music is as unusual as his self-description, electronic music, but definitely listenable. But I strongly recommend to check the samples before you go to the gig.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At the Samuel Beckett Theatre, leading Irish actors Simon Delaney, Rosaleen Linehan, Pauline McLynn, Hugh O\u2019Conor, Lorcan Cranitch, Marcella Plunkett and Killian Scott will participate in a reading of “Ear to the Edge of Time”, winner of the STAGE International Script Competition for the best new play about science and technology. CRANN, the nanoscience institute at Trinity College Dublin hosts STAGE \u2013 Scientists, Technologists and Artists Generating Exploration \u2013 as part of City of Science 2012. Winning playwright Alana Valentine will be awarded her 10,000 Dollars prize in advance of the reading.<\/p>\n

The Silver Branch is a dramatic realisation of four Irish Mythological Tales: Fintan MacBochra, the first man of Ireland \u2013 a shaman and shape-shifter; Fionn Mac Cumhaill and The Salmon of Knowledge; Queen Maeve and the Brown Bull of Cooley and How the boy Setanta became C\u00fa Chulainn. The stories are woven together by a fifth part \u2013 lyrical narration, dramatised by two voices; one male, and one female representing the Seanacha\u00ed. They invite us as the listener to become carriers of The Silver Branch ourselves, so that we in turn can continue to keep this oral tradition of Ireland\u2019s history and folklore alive.<\/p>\n

There will be five panelists, all coming from mental health backgrounds, who openly discuss the objectives of their organisations and provide any insights they have accrued through their experience. They will be asked to discuss how the mental health of Irish young people has been acknowledged and how its treatment has progressed in recent years. Samhain – Haunted Forest at Marlay Park<\/h2>\n

On Sunday 28 Oct Marlay Park will be a free “fright fest of spooky thrills and chills” for Halloween. Masses of Families come to Marlay Park in their Halloween costumes every year for a spooky walk through the haunted forest with ghosts and ghouls and frightful sights. There will be “freaky fog, ghastly spiders and skeletons, creepy eyeballs and pumpkins, the spine chilling boat house preachers and menacing witches and demons.” The walk is approx. 1.5km long and is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies.<\/p>\n

Every year there are more families coming and for that reason it is required to have a free wristband this year to get admission.<\/p>\n

Wristbands can be collected at the DLR Coco Market in Marlay Park on Saturday 20+27 Oct and – if there are any wristbands left – on Sun 28 Oct from 10:00-15:00 behind Marlay House. Entry times to the Haunted Walk are 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30 and 19:30. Your wristband will be colour coded and you will only get access at the allocated time.<\/p>\n

There is limited car parking in the car park off College Rd.
\nUnlike in previous years, there will be NO fireworks this year!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Pubs vs Off-Licenses – an odd battle!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every year during the Government’s budget preparations, the Irish Vintners Association, which is the trade organisation for all pubs, complains about the behaviour of their customers and demands that alcohol prices in Off-Licenses will be increased to reduce the drinking at home. The purpose of that is really to try to put pressure on the government so that in the upcoming Budget announcement they will not increase taxes on alcohol.<\/p>\n

There is nothing wrong with the IVA’s strategy. They have a vested interest and they do their job by doing whatever they can to achieve their goals. That’s what they are asked to do by their members.<\/p>\n

But we don’t have to agree with them! Sure, pubs in Ireland are not in the best shape and have suffered a good bit in recent years in comparison to the good years. But there have been worse economic times in Ireland and pubs still thrived. And the crazily high prices in pubs don’t help either. Yes, rents have increased madly and would put any business under serious pressure, but the IVA is just whinging too much AND they are using very odd arguments.<\/p>\n

The oddest argument really renders their whole campaign ridiculous: The IVA demands that the price for alcohol in Off-Licenses should be artificially – through taxes? – increased to give the pubs a chance to get their lost business back. I am not a fan of excessive alcohol use and drink extremely little alcohol myself, but, IVA, come up with a better argument PLEASE! Because what they are suggesting is akin to a restaurant association demanding an additional tax on food in supermarkets to ensure that more people eat in restaurants. Olhausen Sausages gone – but do you care?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Olhausen a 126 year old meat processing plant and sausage manufacturer closed last week and some local councillors are up in arms over it ( http:\/\/www.dublinpeople.com\/article.php?id=1683&l=100<\/a> ). They are talking about the long tradition and the good reputation and the high quality sausages, but let’s face it. Do you know Olhausen and have you bought their products regularly? I’d say most Irish people know the name and most non-Irish people don’t know it at all. But even if you are Irish, when was the last time you went out of your way to buy their sausages? Maybe tradition is not worth much if you don’t fit into the current time anymore? And maybe Olhausen was just not modern enough?<\/p>\n

The painful part of the closure is the loss of 160 jobs and it makes me wonder if anybody is counting the job creations AND the job losses? The newspapers were full of news about the five companies that created 120 new jobs over the next three years ( http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/breaking\/2012\/1016\/breaking4.html<\/a> ), but if I am counting right, it was a net loss of 40 jobs IMMEDIATELY (not over three years!) if we just consider Olhausen. I also know that a large life insurance company had to let go quite a sizeable number of people, so really the net result of last week was anything but impressive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
