Hi all!

Last Thursday, when I wrote the previous Event Guide, was seemingly not my bestest day. It turned out that I made two sizeable mistakes. I listed an event that will take this Saturday wrongly as taking place last Saturday and when prepared the final e-mail I accidentally forgot to copy the Wednesday events in. As a result the e-mail contained outdated Wednesday events. Argh!! It doesn’t happen often :-) , but sometimes I make a mistake. The good thing is that you are on your toes and tell me! Thanks! In a situation like that I will do my best to put the corrections on the Dublin Event Guide facebook page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide so make sure that you click on LIKE on this page. 3500 people already like the page and it would make sense if you ALL did the same!

[ad]

This week I will try to be more alert. ;-) But it took me a LOT longer than usual to write the newsletter! Lots is happening again this week and we haven’t even reached Spring. As for the last 191 weeks, I will continue to keep you informed about all free events that I can find out about. I am checking approx. 400 web pages for you every week and get lots of mails with event information. In addition there are always interesting competitions and your chances to win are significantly better than when you play lotto. ;-)

By the way, a number of people were wondering why my analysis of the political situation in Ireland was missing in recent weeks. I can promise/guarantee that I will comment again on the “odd-nesses” in the political world, but I guess most of us suffer a bit of politics overload at the moment, so I am giving you a break. This time next week, I hope you will use your democratic right to vote if you are Irish or British (Yes, that IS odd!) and are living in Ireland. If you are not allowed to vote, beg your friends who are allowed to use their vote and to vote well!

And keep telling your friends about the Dublin Event Guide and all the cool events that are taking place in Dublin. Use this to spread the word: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

To subscribe they simply can send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG and they now can subscribe as well on the Facebook Page www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (go to the “Join Email List” Tab).

We now are more than 3500 people that LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide as well. Click on the LIKE button! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page.

Today’s Feel Good Slot video clip you might want to listen to twice. It is what is said that is relevant and the speaker is inspirational speaker Esther Hicks. The first part of the video clip asks you to wake up to who you are and to search for the teachers that you need. The second part talks to the teachers, coaches, parents and supporters in us and tells us that we are to be an “uplifter”. Are you a teacher or coach? I would say each and everyone of you is a teacher in some shape or form to someone! Think about it and your role and importance! Listen to it a few times: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfIEQKtt61s

This week Arthur D, Laura B and Brenda McP cared about the Event Guide and YOU enough to support my work with a donation. Thanks a lot! Can you help too? Your donation will help me to keep the Event Guide going week after week after week. The contributions are essential!! You can give as much as you can/want on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and you can even set-up a yearly recurring donation of EUR 12 by following this link, similar to a magazine subscription.

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my bank, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Taxback.com is offering a free 4 year tax refund assessment to all Dublin Event Guide Subscribers. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions below you could be looking at a nice lump sum from the Revenue Commissioners: Did you…
…work part-time or full-time? …pay your GP or dentist? …rent property in the last 4 years? …pay tuition fees? …pay bin charges? …been on maternity leave?

Sooo many events, I am trying to keep it short every week, and then I find more and more and more. This weekend I will be at a seminar for part of the time, so I won’t be able to go to many events, but if I could, I would go to Café Madrid on Saturday morning and afterwards to the Flamenco workshop in Talbot Gallery. Then I would definitely go to the Print Museum Demonstration Day after having had a great time there before. And if you haven’t been, this weekend is your last chance to go to the Science Gallery to see the current exhibition.

On Sunday the Bird Watching in Booterstown is something I never did before but it could be interesting for a change. ;-) From Monday the Adult Learners Festival gives lots of opportunities for interesting events and the Reform Card event in the Sugarclub on the same day is tempting me a bit. On Tuesday I like the sound of the Green Learning Day, on Wed the HR Master Class is something for me and on Thursday the Visceral Funeral in the Science Gallery.

But to make sure that you get the Event Guide significantly earlier next week, I probably have to stay at home most evenings next week to work on it a bit earlier. :-)

______Competition______________

I am working on getting more competitions for the new year, I know how much you like them. :-) If you work in a company that would like to let the readers know about your products or events through this competition section, just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com

TUTANKHAMUN – TOMB & TREASURE – TICKET COMPETITION
The exhibition “Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures” was launched yesterday and it is really good (Check the Dublin News a little further down for more information!). The organisers made two pairs of tickets available and I would definitely enter this competition if I was allowed. ;-) To win the tickets, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with EGYPT in the subject line and with your name and phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Tues 01 Mar. Check my report from the exhibition in the Dublin News and then enter the competition. ;-) www.kingtutdublin.ie

IRISH NATIONAL MOTORSHOW – TICKET COMPETITION

It took 20 years for the Irish National Motorshow to take place again. The last National Motorshow took place in 1991 and next week from 25-27 Feb it will be back. This Event Extravaganza is showcasing the newest, most exciting car models the Irish Motor Industry has to offer. For all you car and motor lovers this is THE event to be. It will take place in the RDS in Ballsbridge and you will find all details, exhibitor lists, opening hours and how you can buy tickets (from EUR 12) on www.irishmotorshow.ie The organisers have made a pair of tickets available (Thanks!) for a reader of the Dublin Event Guide and to be in with a chance to win you have to go to www.irishmotorshow.ie/competition before Thurs 24 Feb. It sounds like a good event and I will probably check it out myself.

DUBLINIA MID-TERM MAYHEM – TICKET COMPETITION
I forgot to mention that your entry has to be with me by 23 February, so you have another opportunity to enter this competition! Dublinia, the Viking and Medieval heritage centre at Christ Church, have a host of events to keep families entertained this February Mid-Term. If you ever wanted to learn what life was like in Medieval Dublin, what weapons Vikings used in their bloody battles or why archaeologists dig for artefacts? Discover all this and more this February mid-term, as part of Dublinia Mid-Term ‘Mayhem’. A fun packed, educational trip back in time, Mid–Term ‘Mayhem’ keeps you and your little history hunters entertained this mid-term break. Children learn how to make their own Medieval shield, discover the secrets of life in Viking and Medieval Dublin, hunt for hidden treasure and unearth buried artefacts, like a real archaeologist and much more. Mid-Term ‘Mayhem’ takes over Dublinia, each weekend during the February mid-term on 19/20 Feb and 26/27 Feb. Tickets are EUR 4.05 for children and EUR 6.95 for adults. Family Tickets are available at EUR 20 for two adults and two children. Check the event details and a full time table on dublinia.ie/events-page.html
Dublinia was so generous to make 5 (!!!) family passes available (for 2 adults and 2 children), so if you want to visit Dublinia with your kids either during the mid-term break or after, enter this competition and you might win the tickets. Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with DUBLINIA in the subject and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. IN ADDITION, you have to tell me the name of the Hill on which Dublinia is. You easily find that if you go to www.dublinia.ie and then click on LOCATION.

TUTANKHAMUN – TOMB & TREASURES – RDS
Tutankhamun had a busy and very short life. He is one of the most famous Pharaohs of Egypt but there were a lot of challengers in Egypt at that time and he didn’t have a long life as he died when he was only 18 or 19. Still most of us have heard about him because some lucky coincidences meant that his grave was the only one untouched by robbers and when it was opened by archaeologist Howard Carter in 1924 all the 3000 year old treasures where still there. The exhibition “Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures” now is on show in Dublin and I had the privilege to be at the launch yesterday and to do the tour. And it is BRILLIANT! Guided by Audio Guides and with two introductory films you hear all the details and can then see the life size replicas of his tomb, coffin, the famous mask and 1,000 burial artefacts. I spent about 2.5 hours there and the time just flew. So on the “interesting” scale, I would give it 10 out of 10. These type of exhibitions are not cheap, though, and an adult price of EUR 16 during the week and EUR 18 is a bit higher than many would prefer, but you do get a good value. Tickets are for a specific time-slot, and once you are in, you can take as much time as you need. The exhibition will run from 18 Feb until 23 July and it is in the Industries Hall in the RDS. All details can be found here www.kingtutdublin.ie

DUBLIN CULTURE TRAIL
On Wednesday the Dublin Culture Trail, complete with impressive website and iPhone app was launched. The result is brilliant and will help us locals and visitors to make even better use of our city. Extensive information, videos and very nice pictures help us and visitors when visiting Dublin. The iPhone app is free and uses the iPhone’s GPS functionality to guide the user even better. Have a look at dublinculturetrail.ie/ and get the app – if you have an iPhone. I like the look and feel of the website and the feature richness of the whole package. There are a few niggles that need to be sorted, but it is a great and impressive start. The niggles for me are the fact that iPhone apps are useless to me and – much more relevant – the fact that the 16 sites that have been chosen for the launch are only a small subset of the complete Dublin Culture Trail. It is surprising that Christ Church is there but St. Patrick’s Cathedral is not included or that the Temple Bar Gallery & Studios is included but the National Gallery, National Library, Natural History Museum and Science Gallery are all missing. Let’s hope that the project will continue and will soon extend to ALL relevant sites! Have a look and make use of it dublinculturetrail.ie/

CULTURE HACK – ARTISTS AND TECHIES COMING TOGETHER
The Dublin Culture Trail is a perfect example how culture and technology are far closer than they were ever before and a diverse group of Twitterers came up with the idea to build on that and to see how far it can be taken. They are now working on the idea of running CultureHackIE, a day of cultural orgs/artists and techie people coming together, to explore and co-operate. Details are on culturehackie.posterous.com/#!/ and if you are interested (40 people already joined up!), then put your name on the list. The idea is based on a similar event held in the UK In January ‘Culture Hack Day UK’, check out this video which gives a good idea vimeo.com/19385257

Wallace Huey, speaker, coach and author of “Unfold Your Wings and Watch Life Take Off” is inviting you to his inspiring and enlightening talks every Thursday until 21 April. His talks are supported by full screen digital projection with power point, audio, video and Internet. DAA TERMINAL 2 – ADVERTISEMENT
A few weeks ago I mentioned that his advertisement www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdjLBXlieI0 did cost approx. EUR 500,000 according to newspaper reports and that it was a total waste of money because no single passenger can choose which terminal he/she wants to use. And if there is no choice advertisement is a waste. But now the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) ad’s existence was justified: If we DAA hadn’t wasted the 500k, we would have never got this brilliant “p*sstake”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JPT3feipJ8

ST. PATRICK’S DAY SKY FEST NOT IN DUBLIN – AGAIN!
During the week the bad news broke that the St. Patrick’s Day SkyFest was AGAIN not taking place in Dublin. It wasn’t very probably anyway, but when you consider that the Skyfest only reached a max of about 100,000 viewers per year while away from Dublin and how many it would reach if it were to take place in Dublin, it is hugely disappointing. Skyfest 2011 will be in Wexford on Sat 19 March (www.stpatricksfestival.ie/index.php/events/event/skyfest). The last time the Skyfest took place in Dublin was in 2005! In 2006 it was cancelled because no sponsor could be found. In 2007 it was meant to take place in Dublin but had to be cancelled due to seriously bad weather, then 2008 it was in Cashel (Tipperary), 2009 in Waterford, 2010 in Limerick. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyfest

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come! New companies that will be mentioned here soon are a Car Sharing Scheme. Watch this space.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

VISCERAL – EXHIBITION – SCIENCE GALLERY
28 Jan-25 Feb: Science Gallery, Naughton Institute, Trinity College, Pearse Street, D2
This exhibition is already closing next Friday, so if you haven’t seen it yet, make sure that you don’t miss it! The title is “Visceral – The Living Art Experiment” and the artwork falls in the unusual area of “bio art”, which is art made of living things like living tissue, blood cells and other biotechnology-related life forms. It is a fascinating theme and while maybe not stomachable for everybody, it will be a unique experience for most. The exhibits are described in this brochure www.sciencegallery.com/files/VISCERAL_THE%20LIVING%20ART%20EXPERIMENT.pdf but it won’t beat seeing the exhibition in reality. You have from 28 Jan until 25 Feb and the opening times are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00 (closed on Mondays). Admission is free (with a suggested donation of EUR5) and the exhibition is suitable over the age of 15..

CAFÉ MADRID – GRAINGER’S PUB + FLAMENCO – TALBOT GALLERY
I got the weeks mixed up and incorrectly listed this event already last week. It is taking place this week on Sat 19 Feb:
“Events… On The Corner” are running to Spanish flavoured events and I like the sound of it. :-) On Sat from 11:00, Grainger’s pub on 51 Talbot Street, Dublin 1 will be turned into a “Café Madrid”: ‘Churros con chocolate’ will be available and this is accompanied by the good sounds of Spanish singer & guitarist Myriam Leon Barrena and Irish singer & guitarist Stuart Doyle (They will be performing music and songs from their respective bands Annoying Cloud and Yukina.) Spanish newspapers and ‘real’ Spanish people will also be there if you feel like practising your Spanish.
And once you had your breakfast, you should be sufficiently nourished to continue from 13:00 in Talbot Gallery: Learn to dance Sevillanas with Peña Flamenca El Indalo. Sevillanas is a traditional Andalusian folk dance and is a good introduction to flamenco. From 13:00-14:00 learn how to clap along with the rhythm and try a few steps. You don’t need to be a dancer to join in.

DECIMALISATION AND METRICATION IN IRELAND
Last Tuesday it was the 40th anniversary of decimalisation in Ireland. This means that 40 years ago the currency went from the imperial British system of shillings and sixpence etc to a decimal system. Before that there were twelve pennies in a shilling and twenty shillings in a pound! And there were coins with a value of two shillings and sixpence and let’s not even think about adding 17/6 to 1Pound, 11s, 10d. :-S Nobody would convert currencies into the old system anymore. Well, 40 years is a long time, isn’t it? I agree, but now think about this: While the decimalisation happened on 15 Feb 1971, the metrication took place just two years later in 1973 when Ireland joined the predecessor of the European Union.
So 38 years ago stones (as weight) and feet and inches were replaced by kilogram and centimetres and metres. If you are Irish, tell me how tall and how heavy you are! And if you are not Irish, ask the nearest Irish person how tall he/she is. (Don’t ask for the weight if you don’t want to upset the other person. ;-) ) I bet that more than 80% of Irish people still use stones and feet and inches. …and guys, 38 years after these measurements were replaced, THIS IS ODD!!!! :-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_Day
