Hi all!

What a brilliant Street Performance World Championship last weekend! And on top of a great festival that was extremely well organised the weather could not have been better! I had a super weekend, thanks to all the volunteers and to the organisers of the event and certainly to all the performers. I know that there was a bit of upset with some people because the Space Hopper event was oversubscribed and consequently not everybody could take part in the Guinness World Record Event. It is very annoying if you look forward to it and then are told that you can’t take part. But I can understand why it was a bit oversubscribed (to make sure that 1500 people will be there) and can understand as well why at some point the doors had to be closed. Maybe it would have been better to officially target 1500 but prepare for 2000. I am convinced that if some similar event will take place again, the hiccups will not re-occur!

The voting process for the best Street Performer is a little unclear to me and not for the first time I have been very surprised about the selected winner, but as I see it, the “world championship” part is only a brilliant public relations trick, so it doesn’t really matter if anybody wins and who wins.

One thing never ceases to amaze me: Even in the 4th year of the Street Performance World Championship (SPWC) I find people that have never heard about it AND people that have heard about it but never went to the event. I just don’t get that. ;-) But then I AM infected by the SPWC bug! :-)

[ad]

By the way, commiserations to all the people whose national team failed to qualify at the World Cup final rounds. I am lucky that “my” team is still in, it was tight enough. If your team had to leave, feel free to support the German team! :-) Any support is welcome.

Another thing I want to mention to you already: In early July I will be away – for the first time in many many years – for more than a long weekend (on short holidays and a training course). I will do my best to provide you with some form of an Event Guide newsletter on the weekend of 10/11 July, but the newsletter will be not as comprehensive as you are used to. I am not sure yet how expansive the newsletter will be, but I thought I better mention it to you early. ;-)

I met a number of people at the Street Performance World Championship weekend who told me how much they like the Event Guide. Martin and Patricia are two of them and you know who you are. :-) It is great to hear this and probably your friends would think that too. So, just tell them that they only need to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com to subscribe. This might help www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

Last week Marc, friend or mine sent me a mail telling me a dramatic story and – with his ok – I will tell you his story in this week’s “Feel Good Slot”:
“Last night my little girl almost died. She went into a seizure. I watched the light leave her eyes, she stopped breathing and her eyes closed. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I would have traded places with her right then and there. I thought she was gone. An ambulance arrived 15 min later and by this time she was back and screaming and kicking. She stopped breathing for maybe 10-15 seconds and came back to consciousness slowly with murmurs and shaking and then crying. The ambulance crew from Navan Hospital were fantastic and took care of her right away stabilising her. We got her to Temple Street Children’s Hospital where she was taken care of better than we could have hoped for. The staff in there are amazing and they are consistent and reassuring. They told us she had a seizure which can be quite common with a high temperature in small babies and children. We were there for 5 hours or so before we were given the ok to go home, meanwhile the staff continued on into another long Friday night shift, taking care of many children and doing it excellently.
As I write this my little girl is asleep and has improved greatly and I’m so thankful to have her home safe and sound.
I hope everyone can take a moment to think about or reach out to someone they love and really appreciate that you have them in your life. We can very often take the people in our lives for granted and only realise it when it’s too late. Nothing is more important that your loved ones and friends. And please consider donating money to Temple Street www.templestreet.ie/ the people in there do great work.”
I am glad that Marc’s little daughter had a lucky escape, but it as not only luck, it was the work that was done in the ambulance and the hospital as well, so let’s be grateful to all the people that look after us when we can’t do it ourselves!

This week, Susan D. and Patricia O’N. sent me a donation and I appreciate their support hugely. If you want to support my weekly work too and want to make me smile or just realise that you still have to send this belated Event Guide birthday present, you can donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

PHOENIX BOOTCAMP – NEW COURSE STARTING SOON
Want to get lean and fit for the summer? – Dublin’s VIP bootcamp can help you shed the excess body fat. With personalised meal plans, home training and with training in Phoenix Park, this is the only place to train. The next 8 week course starts on 30 June.
www.phoenixpbootcamp.com/
——————————————————–

My plan for this weekend is to got to the Point Village Market on Saturday, then to the Joycean Street Theatre and then maybe to have a look at the – good natured – madness that the Pride Parade is. Zombie Walk is next on the list but between all this I will have to fit one quite relevant World Cup match. ;-)
On Sunday I will either take some time off or I will join Patrick Cumiskey at a 2-day training course with www.kravmagaireland.com.
Next week will be very busy with day job and with some hobbies, so I will probably not go to any events during the week, but check this newsletter, maybe you will find something for you!

______Competition______________

I am working on getting more competitions for you. If you work in a company that wants to promote an event, a product (incl. books) or a service, then you should contact me to talk about how this could be done through the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and tell me what non-free event or product you would like to promote through a competition.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

NEW LUAS LINE – PLANNING APPLICATION
The Luas link between the existing Luas lines has been proposed and a planning application has been submitted. All details including a very detailed map are here
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0622/breaking21.html
www.transport21.ie/Projects/upload/File/Line_D_Map_201208.jpg
I am totally in favour of an extension of the public transport system in Dublin, but I am concerned about two things a) more streets will be completely taken over by the Luas, which soon will make it virtually impossible to reach any of the shops in the City Centre to collect larger goods etc and b) the construction period is expected to take EIGHT (!!!!) years! And with the typical delays that is more like 10 years. 10 years of excavations in Dublin? 10 years of chaos? Can you remember the area around Harcourt Street when the Luas was built? Or more recently the IFSC area? And can you imagine that mess and inconvenience for 10 years? Definitely a high price to pay for the undoubtedly necessary public transport.

LOWER DRINK DRIVING LIMITS IN IRELAND
The Dail has decided (not voted (!) because all were in favour) on a new Road Traffic Bill that contains a number of relevant changes that affect every driver. As the next step the Seanad has to agree to it and then it will be published and will be a law a couple of weeks after. So all will probably be in place in or even before August.
The biggest change is that with the new law the permissible alcohol limit for drivers of “mechanically propelled vehicles” will be lowered from 80mg to 50mg and for driving novices on a learner licence and for drivers with full licence in the first two years since getting their licence from 80mg to 20mg! For new drivers this is virtually a total alcohol ban and for the rest, it limits the alcohol intake to one glass of wine or even less. This reduction is long overdue if you compare it with the rest of Europe where only the UK and tiny Malta have the 80mg limit. The organisation that represents the pub owners says this is the end of the pubs, but their argument is just not very strong if you look at people killed by drunken drivers on the other side.
Another relevant change for everybody with a non-irish drivers licence is that with the new law, penalty points can be given to these drivers as well. Until now that was not possible. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0624/breaking8.html If you want to check out the bill and see all other changes, you can find it here:

SUMMER OF HERITAGE – DUN LAOGHAIRE
Last year thousands of people visited various heritage sites across South County Dublin and this year promises to be even better with an ever expanding programme featuring a range of events for adults and children alike, all of which are free to attend. The schedule will again include tours and living history performances at the two stately homes, Cabinteely House and Marlay House. In addition tours of the Celtic Oratory on Library Road, the Obelisk on Killiney Hill, the Dun Laoghaire Memorials Tour, which is a coastal visit to the numerous memorials around the town, including the Queen Victoria Fountain and the Crimean War Cannon and a sightseeing tour along The Metals, a historic pathway that linked the quarry in Dalkey to the harbour in Dun Laoghaire, are part of the programme. Sea Bird Viewing, Nature Walks and Bat Walks complement the 2010 schedule. The programme will run from 28 June – 05 September and all details can be found in the brochure at www.dlrevents.ie/pdfs/Leaflet.pdf. All events are free and no pre-booking is required. However many tours have limited capacity. www.dlrevents.ie/heritage_10.html

INDIAN FILM FESTIVAL – RATHMINES
Unfortunately I only found out too late about an interesting free Bollywood dance event that took place last night, so I could not include it last week. The event was part of a Indian Film Festival and the film festival is starting today. There are no free film screenings, but if you are interested nevertheless, check out www.cfcp.ie/iffi/

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

TAI CHI COURSES – PORTOBELLO
Alda Gomez, a strong supporter of the Event Guide for years, informed me about a new Tai Chi training business she is starting. Her first course will start in Portobello on Tuesday (29 June) at 20:00 and more courses are planned from September, including courses in the morning for those who do not have a 9-5 job. Have a look at www.taichi-southcity.com and contact Alda if you are interested in Tai Chi!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

SUMMER EXHIBITION – PAUL KANE GALLERY
The summer exhibition “NOT the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition” will be on show in the Paul Kane Gallery, 6 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 from Fri 02 July-Sat 24 July. It is a group summer show of work by gallery artists inspired by the Royal Academy (London) hanging style. Works by the gallery’s artists will be hung from floor to ceiling to afford an opportunity to see a wide range of styles and works by the gallery’s prize winning artists in the one show.
Included will be works by Marc Reilly, winner of the watercolour prize at RHA annual exhibition 2009. Eoin Mac Lochlainn, winner of this year’s Keating McLoughlin Medal and Prize at the RHA annual and the Golden Fleece Award 2008. Tom Hammick, winner of The Royal Academy print prize 2005, the Nexus prize 2009 and prizewinner in the Jerwood drawing prize 2004. As well as works of emerging artists such as Wesley Triggs, Mary Clancy and Aidan Crotty.
(Gallery Details: The Paul Kane Gallery, 6 Merrion Square North, www.thepaulkanegallery.com, Open: Tues-Fri 11:00-18:00 and Sat 12:00-17:00)

BICYCLE PRIDE PARADE – CRITICAL MASS
Calling an event “Critical Mass” is a little silly because it just describes absolutely nothing about the event and giving that name to a Cycling Event makes even less sense. However, since this cycling event was intended as a protest, the name had some meaning a long long time ago: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Mass
It is a cycling event that takes place every last Friday of a month in over 300 cities around the world. They are free mass participatory events, with no leaders or fixed agendas. However, the broad aim is to celebrate cycling and sustainable transport, and to give cyclists safety in numbers. The next Critical Mass Cycling Event in Dublin will take place on Fri 25 June from 18:00 and is entitled “Bicycle Pride Parade”. PHOTOIRELAND FESTIVAL
PhotoIreland, Ireland’s International Festival of Photography and Visual Culture, is taking place from 01-11 July throughout Dublin. Although there is a strong support for other artistic practices, there has never been an International Photographic Festival held in Ireland.
PhotoIreland aims to become Ireland’s International Festival for Photography. It will showcase the work of those photographers and artists, national and international, whose critical practice goes from a traditional approach to the medium, to those who question its technical and ideological boundaries, but whose work help us to understand this ever present medium.

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

CIVIL PARTNERSHIP BILL
Have you heard about the Civil Partnership Bill? The original idea behind it was seemingly to allow gay couples to have a civil marriage so that in committed relationships the partners have some rights as well despite the fact that a “full” wedding is not possible. I wasn’t too concerned about this new but much delayed law, but then I heard about the Irish Catholic Bishops making a big thing out of it and subsequent heard a discussion on the radio station Q102 and I get more and more confused by it.
I am catholic, but coming from a country that nicely and – in my opinion – appropriately separates the religious and the civil aspect of a marriage, I don’t really see why the church’s opinion should get considered for this. The civil side should not interfere with the church rules, but the church should then not interfere with the civil laws either. The arguments the catholic church uses make sense in the context of the church rules and believes, but people that don’t subscribe to these rules or believes should not be affected or implicated by it. (www.catholicbishops.ie/images/stories/features/Marriage_Matters/why_marriage_matters_eng.pdf)
But there is more I don’t understand: The gay community is unhappy about the Civil Partnership someone told me, but why? In the grown-up country where state and church are two separate co-existing but independent entities, only the civil rule should be relevant to the two people that want to get married and if you call it civil partnership or call it wedding there is not much of a difference. Yes, there are some strange rules in the Civil Partnership Bill, for example, you have to live together for 5 years before you have the full rights? (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2010/0519/1224270654973.html) That doesn’t make sense!
In a radio interview someone claimed that cohabiting couples (man+ woman) would be affected as well because they automatically would be declared as a couple? But I can’t see that in the bill (www.oireachtas.ie/documents/bills28/bills/2009/4409/b4409d.pdf) where it seems to say that a) you have to DECLARE your partnership, i.e. sign the wedding contract in front of a registrar and in addition it says in the bill that a civil partnership can be nullified if the two partners are not the same gender. That surprised me!
Somewhere I had read as well that the Bill is there to help siblings who live together for their whole live to have a legal right to each others possessions when one dies, but civil partnerships between siblings are explicitly excluded if the siblings are the same gender, but seemingly NOT if the siblings are a man and a woman. That appears to be very strange as well!
Today I have no answers, only questions! But what is odd is that there are soooo many weird things in that law. My suggestion to all of you is to inform yourself, because if you are not married but live with someone it COULD affect you! And on the other hand, if you want to use the new law, it could turn out that you are NOT eligible! So don’t just let the politicians do their thing, but get involved or at least get informed!

If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
