Hi all!

Have you seen that Christmas has already arrived in shops? In September some shops already sold Christmas stuff, but last week I saw Christmas decoration in a shop window and today I was in a shopping centre and the Christmas tree was already standing there. I don’t know about you, but for me that is MUCH too early. I do love Christmas, but I think the magic of Christmas has to do with the fact that it is/should be limited to just the few weeks in December. Sure, the shops want to (some NEED to) use any bit of Christmas Shopping time they can get. I expect the Sales this year to start BEFORE Christmas anyway. Odd times!

The weather gods seem to have been infected by the early appearance of Christmas decoration and have decided to give us an uncomfortable coldness already. Too early too … for my liking! Somebody said that there is a risk of snow this weekend. That seems to be a little bit of an exaggeration ;-) but it nearly feels like it and I don’t think anybody would be surprised. :-)

It is the time of the year when outside events are getting extinct and with the exception of the upcoming Christmas market(s) (and the yearly appearance of the ice skating rinks) the events for the next few months will be mainly indoors.

This week there is a brilliant event taking place for all aspiring writers and authors and if you are in that category and if one of your goals is to write and publish a book at some point in the future, then CLEAR the Saturday for this event! You will never get a similarly good offer!

On Tuesday the Alchemist Café interests me and I would like to go, but will unfortunately probably not be able to.

GETTING PUBLISHED – SEMINAR FOR WRITERS – TICKETS for free
Are you interested in writing? Maybe you already have your book written or are in the process of it? Or maybe you know that there is a book in you, but you need to get a bit of guidance before you can bring it to paper. No matter where you are right now, if you are an aspiring writer, you should make sure to find out about the Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP). To be honest, the scope of the CFCP is much wider, but more about that next week, today I will focus on the writers for a good reason: Ian Oliver, a long term supporter of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is one of the founders of the Centre for Creative Practices and he has an amazing offer for all the writers among you. This Saturday 07 Nov (tomorrow!) the CFCP is running a full day seminar. It is called “Getting Published” and gives new writers and people interested in publishing an opportunity to meet with leading industry professionals and to gather information on the current publishing options and procedures. The panel will include a number of speakers, from authors, editors, agents and publishers who are only too happy to share their information and experience with you. The seminar is a mixture of presentations, talks, workshops and question/answer sessions with literary agents, publishers, tutors and authors. Opportunities for networking, discussions and asking your questions are an important aspect of this interactive event. THE LOST WEEKEND / CONDITIONED – THEATRE TICKET COMPETITON

DIGIWEB TAKES OVER SMART TELECOM
I know, for most of you that is NOT exciting news either, but my day job is in Telecoms, so it does have a bit more significance to me. The puzzling thing is that ANYBODY was prepared to take over Smart Telecom, a company who was at least three times in serious financial difficulties in recent years and who never managed to leave the troubles full behind. Just a few months ago the employee numbers were drastically reduced further. Interestingly Digiweb has in recent months not been rumoured as the financially strongest company either and if that is true, then the question arises if two wobbly companies put together create a stronger or a weaker resulting operation. www.breakingnews.ie/business/eymhmhkfauid/rss2/
Another puzzling aspect: Digiweb announced on 15 Oct that they have 58,000 customers: www.irishpressreleases.ie/2009/10/15/digiweb-wins-e5m-in-corporate-voice-deals-in-2009/ Adding Smart’s 12,500 customers, my calculator arrives at a figure of 70,500 customers. Strangely, however, the newest press release talks about 94,500 customers of the combined companies. www.rte.ie/business/2009/1105/smart.html Ahhh, well, it can easily happen that you loose or in this case find 24,000 customers in the cracks. :-)

STARBUCKS CLOSED FIVE OUTLETS IN DUBLIN
Starbucks has announced that they have closed five outlets in the Greater Dublin area Ranelagh, Dundrum Hughes & Hughes, Swords Hughes & Hughes, Dalkey and Tallaght. In the last financial year the losses of Starbucks Ireland increased significantly and stand now at pre-tax losses of EUR 5.4 million. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1105/breaking67.htm So totally overpriced products obviously don’t make you successful. I saw yesterday in a number of places signs for EUR 2 coffees. Can you imagine what this means for the other Starbucks outlets?

I have serious difficulties finding interesting stories for the Dublin News section this week. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I wasn’t in the City Centre too much this week? Or maybe there was just not that much exciting news?

The Embassy of Mexico presents an exhibition of work by 11 artists about light and death at The Shed. NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
The trade union will protest on Fri 06 Nov at 14:30 at Parnell Square. They claim “The ICTU campaign for a ‘Social Solidarity Pact’ to include job creation, job protection, an economic stimulus package and opposition to pay and welfare cuts and pension protection, is now gathering momentum.” I asked last week if somebody could explain to me what this is all about and I did get a good explanation. Thanks! Unfortunately, however, I still think that this “National Day of Action” has absolutely no focus and will achieve nothing because everyone interprets into it whatever he/she feels passionate or aggrieved about. Ohh, and if it turns into a “no cuts for public sector employees” protest, then the ICTU will maybe lose the support from all private sector employees – possibly for a long time. www.indymedia.ie/article/94517

MOMENTS IN TIME – BERLIN WALL – PHOTO EXHIBITION
From 05-19 Nov 2009, the European Commission Representation in Ireland will host an exhibition about the events surrounding the Fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. The exhibition is entitled “Moments in Time 1989/90” and can be visited for free at European Union House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2, from 09:00-17:00 from Monday to Friday.

SCIENCE WEEK
Today the Science Week 2009 starts and it will continue until 15 November. The website is www.scienceweek.ie and all events are listed on the website. There are many events for school children, but the libraries in and around Dublin host many fascinating events for adults, so you should definitely be able to find something. If I read the website correctly, there are 114 events taking place in Dublin and throughout Ireland I could find 415 events. Impressive numbers! Last years I went to three or four talks and you can find videos and transcripts under LECTURE SERIES on the website. You can and should have a look through the list of events, but to help you I selected all events for the adults that are freely available (no guarantee for completeness and one or two are not free) and found a total of 27 events. And if you want me to help you, then feel free to check this list that I created. Over a century ago the renowned Spanish neuroanatomist Santiago Ramon y Cajal proposed that: ‘neuronal connections are not definitive and immutable’ which means that experience leaves a trace in the human brain and that these traces are inscribed and linked, vanish and change throughout life. ROAD TO POLISH INDEPENDENCE – SEMINAR
In order to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Polish political transition since 1989, which featured the Round Table Talks between the communist government in Poland and Solidarno??, the banned trade union, as well as the first free elections since the World War II, the Polish Embassy are inviting you to take part in a seminar: “Road to Independence – Polish case study”.
The seminar will take place in European Union House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2 on Wed 11 Nov starting at 18:30.
The two principal speakers at the seminar are:
– Zbigniew Bujak: an electrician and a foreman in Ursus, one of the biggest tractor factories in Poland in late 1970s and in 1980s, became chairman of the Warsaw Region branch of Solidarity in September 1980. He was one of the leaders of the underground Solidarity movement in the 1980s in Poland, organising underground committees including underground press and radio. Arrested in 1984 after evading the secret police (S?u?ba Bezpiecze?stwa) for nearly three and a half years, he became the last Solidarity leader to be captured. Released soon afterwards under a general amnesty, he participated in the Polish Round Table Talks with the government in 1989. He was elected to the Sejm (Polish parliament) in the Polish legislative elections of 1989. In the 1990s he joined left-wing political parties. In 1992 he helped found the Labour Union (UP) party and became one of the party’s leading members. He won a seat to the Sejm at the 1993 legislative elections, representing UP, and served as an MP until 1997.
– Dr Jacqueline Hayden: former journalist and current affairs radio producer with RTE, currently lecturer in the Department of Political Science of Trinity College Dublin. As a journalist she visited Poland on numerous occasions during the 1980s, where she had an opportunity to witness the political transition and to interview leaders of the Communist party as well as of the leaders of Solidarity.

RE-DRESS’ RE-CONNECT EVENING
Re-dress, Irelands one-stop shop for all things sustainable in fashion, begin the first of their monthly Re-connect events on Wed 11 Nov from 19:00-21:00 in The Exchequer Bar, Exchequer Street, Dublin 2. Kellie Dalton, DCU Business School, will present a summary of her thesis on ecological fashion entitled ‘Towards a Theory of Fashion Evolution – A Revolution of Consciousness’. The presentation will be followed by time for chatting, nattering and RE-CONNECTING! The event is free and open to all. LIPS NUMBER 1 HITS – LAUNCH PARTY
To celebrate the launch of “Lips: Number 1 Hits”, Xbox is holding an exclusive party in The Good Bits, Store Street, Dublin 1 on Wed 11 Nov from 19:00-22:30. Pop band “The Saturdays” will perform and DJ Arveene will provide the tunes late into the night. Drinks on the night will be sponsored by West Coast Cooler, so ladies don’t be late, the drinks reception will start at 19:00. * The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 17:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. The majority of people there are Spanish or English-speaking, but French, Italians, Polish and Chinese are sometimes coming to and everybody is welcome to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.
* “The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week. www.thezodiacsessions.com/
* “The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 on SOME Wednesdays. The frequency got less predictable in recent weeks/months and you should check the website before going. www.myspace.com/thesongroom
* Quiz Night in The Lotts Cafe Bar, 9 Lower Liffey St, Dublin 1. Every Wed a quiz night with great prizes is taking place at 20:00/20:30 depending on football. Participation is free.
* Traditional Irish Music Session in Hedigan’s (The Brian Boru) in Phibsborough from 21:30 every Wednesday. If you play an instrument you are especially welcome (all levels are welcome).
* Seven Deadly Skins are playing Reggae/Ska Covers from 22:00 with DJ Dotsie later. The Mezz, 24/25 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, D2. Admission is free.

BIRDING FROM THE HIP – BOTANIC GARDEN LECTURE
The Lecture “Birding from the Hip” by Anthony McGeehan will take place on Thurs 12 Nov in the Visitor Centre of the Botanic Garden in Glasnevin. Doors open 19:30, Lecture 20:00. “Anthony McGeehan, author and columnist in the Birdwatch magazine will relate stories of birding, from home and abroad, some of which appeared in his book “Birding from the Hip” which was published in August 2009. KUNKONTROL MUSIC&VISUALS – THOMAS HOUSE
Because there are tooo many DJ events in Dublin to cover them all, I usually only list live music events here. But if a fellow member of the Dublin Event Guide Community starts a free new venture, I am more than happy to help out. Mike & Anto Kontrol told me that they are running a new free night of sound & visuals downstairs in The Thomas House (86 Thomas Street, Dublin 8) every second Thursday. CAFE CULTURE PROJECT – CONFERENCE
Emer Burton told me about the Café Culture Project, which invites to a conference entitled “Promoting Dublin Café Culture” on Fri 13 Nov 2009 in the Mansion House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2 (10:00-13:00). Admission is free, but places are limited so you have to register via cafecultureproject@gmail.com. (The e-mail address was wrong last week, so if you tried to register, please send another mail!) The aim of the conference is to promote and celebrate café culture in all its diversity, and to support cafés that contribute to the social, cultural and business life of the city.

RHA LECTURE SERIES, DUBLIN
The Royal Hibernian Academy is inviting to a series of lectures by the RHA’s artist Members and Honorary Members. There are a limited number of spaces available on selected lectures before Christmas. The lectures still with availability are:

RDS SCIENCE LECTURE
RDS Irish Times Boyle Medal Conferral & Public Lecture entitled “From Passion to Practical Benefits: Why it’s Great Being a Scientist” is taking palce on Mon 16 Nov at 19:00 in the RDS Concert Hall in Ballsbridge. The 37th Boyle Medal will be presented to Professor Luke O’Neill (TCD) and his lecture will cover everything from his pioneering work on innate immunity and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis to his passion for science. RDS DARWIN LECTURE
The RDS has a very interesting free public lecture coming up:
The RDS Darwin200 Public Lecture: “Fragile Web, What Next for Nature?” will take place on Tues 24 November in the RDS Concert Hall at 19:00. In celebration of Darwin200 and to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin, the RDS has invited Professor Jonathan Silvertown who will be speaking on the matter of biodiversity. This lecture marks the fourth in the series of RDS Irish Times ‘Ireland in 2030’ lectures which aims to look at the serious long-term challenges that face us today. LEGENDS IN YOUR LUNCHTIME – NCIRL
The National College or Ireland is bringing the “Legends in your Lunchtime” series back by popular demand. From 30 Sept-02 Dec a whole range of prominent speakers will talk about their life/job/business and you can listen and often even ask.
