Hi all!

Another weekend approaching and this is good news. The week certainly was eventful, not all was good in MY week (a couple more comments about that at the end), but I hope yours was sparkling and shining.

Last week I told you that we (Kevin Doyle & The Way it Was Orchestra) were on “Saturday Night with Miriam” but I totally forgot to include a link to our performance. Here it is now www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ_OH4ZrCeU . If you want to see and hear us live in concert, then you can do that on 16 August in the Olympia Theatre in Dame Street. The show will be a concert of all the best songs of Elvis Presley and it will be a really good gig, I can promise that! If you have seen our show in the Olympia or in the Tivoli Theater before, you should come back. It is a completely different concert. For tickets you can go here www.ticketmaster.ie/Kevin-Doyle-Sings-the-Elvis-Presley-Songbook-tickets/artist/997678

During the week a number of people mentioned to me that they are concerned about the Swineflu and that they were wondering if all events towards the end of the year will be cancelled to contain it. Well, it seems that containing it is not possible anymore. I saw some statistics from Germany: Currently there are 200-400 reported cases, but at least 2,000-4,000 people are expected to be infected. In autumn it is expected that up to 30,000,000 (30 Million!) will be infected and will go through the 5 days flu. In light of figures like that, I think it is the wrong approach to be worried about it. Instead try to eat healthily, give up unhealthy habits and if/when it hits you take the time you need to recover. To be honest, if it will hit me, I rather get it over with sooner than later, but unfortunately we can’t choose. Interestingly I was just looking at an influenza epidemic at the Infectious exhibition in the Science Gallery about 2 weeks ago. A hugely interesting computer simulation showed the influence of air travel on how the virus spread and I was fascinated by how fast it spreads.

This week I need the “feel good” slot myself, so let’s try this: The Psychologist Richard Wiseman is working on a BIG mass experiment to cheer up the world and he needs your help. The website is www.scienceofhappiness.co.uk and to help with this study you have to go to that website between Monday 03 Aug and Friday 07 Aug. You first complete a short questionnaire, then you will see a short video describing a happiness boosting exercise that you are meant to carry out (takes only 1 minute) every day of the study and at the end of the project you answer another few questions. So, simple enough and the bonus for you is that there is a good chance that you will feel more positive at the end. And maybe you can take the information with you into the future to lead a happier life!? Try it! It’s worth a try!

Please help spreading the word about this newsletter. These Mini-Flyers and the Tear-off Poster should help you: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

Nearly all of the 4400+ subscribers only joined because someone else recommended this Event Guide to them!! But amazingly ;-) there are still a few people out there that haven’t subscribed yet, so let’s get them. :-)

————-
Currently more than 4500 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful and nice people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the next section. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed too! All I am asking for is 1 single Euro per month (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). For a whole year that is less than 3 pints or less than 2 gin+tonic or similar. I know times are tough for many and if 12 Euro per year is too much and you ALREADY have given up going to the pub, paying for taxis etc then please accept this newsletter as a gift to you but please pay it forward (i.e. do something good for someone else – it doesn’t have to cost money)! However, if you can spare two drinks per year to help with the cost for this weekly newsletter that helps you save so much more than EUR 12, then please help with your contribution.
You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.
Alternatively you can send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

NEW HORIZON EXPEDITIONS – JOURNEY TO SOME AMAZING PARTS OF THE WORLD.
New Horizon Expeditions are an Irish company offering some fantastic trips to all corners of the world. Our aim is to offer people the chance to experience some unique locations and witness some of nature’s wonders as well as diverse cultures. Destinations include AFRICA, THE ARCTIC, ANTARCTICA, GALAPAGOS ISLANDS & SOUTH AMERICA and others will be on offer soon including The 7 WONDERS, INDIA & CHINA. Take a look at our website and see what is on offer. Sign up for our NEWSLETTER to receive special offers and first option on some great deals. www.newhorizon.ie/EG/index.htm. We are also running a competition to offer a lucky Dublin Event Guide subscriber a copy of “Tom Crean, an Illustrated Life” by Michael Smith. See competition details below.
——————————————————–

This Saturday I have Urban Circus in Jervis Street on my must do list. Then on Sunday the Horse Market in the morning (I STILL haven’t been!), then Crafty Market, followed by Music in the Gardens in Farmleigh House or the Bubble Exhibition in the Science Gallery (I have been there at the opening yesterday, so I won’t go again, but you should definitely go! Doesn’t have to be this weekend though.) The Argentine Fair on Sunday sounds interesting as well, so if I have a few minutes…
After all this “entertainment stress”, I might take it easy on Monday. But Music in the Gardens in Farmleigh House is again an option. :-)
During the week, the Alchemist Café is definitely something interesting if this is your thing and if I worked near-by, I would go to the Opera in the Open on Thursday.

______Competition______________

OUTDOORS IRELAND – WIN A CARAUNTOOHIL CLIMB
The next climb is in the second half of August, so you better get your gear ready and if you want to enter this competition, you BETTER hurry:
Carrauntoohil is the highest peak in Ireland. With 1038 metre it is central peak of the MacGillicuddy Reeks in Co. Kerry and today I have a special competition price for you that has to do with this mountain.
Many of you have heard of Outdoors Ireland before. Nathan Kingerlee runs Adventure Breaks, Yoga Adventure Breaks, Canoe Trips, Rock Climbing, Hill Walking and anything else that has to do with “outdoors” and “adventure”. ;-) Have a look at his website www.outdoorsireland.ie for the full range. In August he will be running a guided night climb of Carrauntoohil, to be on the summit for dawn. Sounds amazing! To let you all know, Nathan has given me with a place on this night climb for a competition (a value of EUR 85). So, one of you can win this exciting trip and as always it is simple to take part. If you are interested keep in mind that you need a certain amount of equipment and a good level of fitness, so it is not a stroll trough the park, but the reward is definitely worth it! You can read all the details about the climb and what you need etc. here outdoorsireland.blogspot.com/2009/06/guided-night-ascent-of-carrauntoohil.html. So, if you want to be in with a chance to win this place on the night climb, you have to send me a mail with the subject OUTDOORS and your name and phone number in the body of the mail. IN ADDITION you have to do a little bit of work this time and answer in the body of the mail the following question: ‘What is the name of the charity with which Outdoors Ireland has teamed up with to run these night climbs?’ Your mail has to be with me by Tues 04 Aug.
If you definitely want to be part of the climb and want to make sure that you get one of the limited number of places on the trip, you can book with Nathan immediately via info@outdoorsireland.com or 086 860 45 63.

NEW HORIZON EXPEDITIONS – BOOK COMPETITION
This is your last chance to enter this competition: “New Horizon Expeditions” are offering you the chance to win a copy of “Tom Crean, an Illustrated Life” by Michael Smith. This book details the life of Ireland’s own polar explorer, Tom Crean. Born in Anascaul in Kerry he was instrumental in several historical attempts to conquer the South Pole with names such as Captain Robert Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton. This pictorial anthology celebrates the exploits of Tom Crean through a series of outstanding photographs charting his life from his early days on a Kerry farm, through decades of heroism in the Antarctic and back to retirement in Ireland. To be in with a chance to win this book, follow the following link: www.newhorizon.ie/EG/index.htm. The closing date for this competition is 04 August 2009.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

MORE LIBRARY EVENTS
I mentioned recently that the libraries in Dublin run LOTS of free events and if you are looking for something to do during the day, you should check their website. A the time I only mentioned the Dublin Libraries, but there are obviously County Dublin Libraries as well that run interesting events. And Niamh N kindly reminded me again of all the OTHER libraries. The libraries in South Dublin are Ballyroan, Castletymon, Clondalkin, Tallaght, Lucan, Stewarts and Whitechurch:
www.southdublinlibraries.ie/events (and just for completeness the Dublin City Libraries are here www.dublincitypubliclibraries.ie and the Fingal County Libraries are here www.fingalcoco.ie/Library/)

DUBLIN BUS 50 CENT CITY CENTRE FARE
A new City Centre fare has been introduced by Dublin Bus. With the tiny City Centre of Dublin, it won’t get you far, but if you do short trips in the bus and especially if you go North-South, it is definitely a saving. In my opinion the East-West “city centre” is much to small, from Conolly Station to Parliament Street? It should at least go to Christchurch or even better Thomas Street. Bus stops that are in the City Centre Fare scheme are marked with a specific sign…look out for it. More information and a map are here:
www.dublinbus.ie/en/News-Centre/Travel-News/50c-City-Centre-Fare/

PUB PRICE FREEZE ENDS
Eight months after its big announcement, the 1-year pub price freeze is coming to a dramatic end. On 01 December the pubs announced it as a great thing for consumers despite the fact that prices should have DROPPED not just stayed frozen. Now the High Court forced the pubs to end the price freeze because a price freeze is a form of price fixing.
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0728/breaking73.htm …and without delay we are threatened with probable price increases as a consequence of the High Court decision by the same people. I guess we can counter that threat with our ability to trigger more pub closures by staying away. I am surprised how empty many pubs are lately, on the other hand, I am not REALLY surprised.

CAMERA FOUND AT OXEGEN – SEARCH FOR OWNER SUCCESSFUL
Lots of you were interested in this story from last week and it seems the owner has been found! Through Maurice Coyle’s initiative a group of more than 600 people – all interested to help – came together to conspire together with the use of social media. The name of a person on the pictures from this camera was found because somebody’s friend recognised him, a picture was found on Google that confirmed this guys identity, the former employer was identified and then (I was able to help a little bit with the last step.), the facebook profile of one of the people on the pictures was found. So there was a definite path to the owner, but in the end it was another route that resulted in success: At a wedding another person on the pictures was recognised and was told about “Maurice’s campaign”. He then notified the camera owner. ;-) A great success and one for the anecdote collection about Social Media’s advantages. In the end it was the power of people prepared to take action (Maurice + helpers) combined with the power of social media that makes it possible to achieve things that in the past were unthinkable! The story is here www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=104741083894 and if you are not on facebook yet consider joining. Twitter is another Social Media vehicle that you should check out and you find me on www.twitter.com by searching for JoergSt.

ARTHUR’S DAY
A few months ago Guinness announced a new day of celebration as if it would be the new National Holiday. Arthur’s Day on 24 Sept will be the central day of the 250 year anniversary Guinness is celebrating this year. I was expecting a big celebration in a festival style with lots of free events and entertainment. But Guinness being Guinness will have none of that! Instead they are organising a number of concerts in pubs and other venues and not a single one seems to be free. Very disappointing. If you look at the participating venues on the Guinness website or on the ticketmaster website, then you better stay at home on the 24 Sept because even in places like Dakota, Doheny&Nesbitt and the Market Bar, you will have to pay admission charges on that day.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4000+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

COW’S LANE DESIGNER STUDIO
Katharine Quin contacted me this week to tell me about a venture she has started a few months ago with quite a number of other like-minded people. They are all designers/makers who offer their goods and creations at the Cow’s Lane Market in Temple Bar and as Katharine explains “the cold, wet Saturdays inspired us to seek the comfort of the indoors”. So in January, the 10 designers/makers decided to open a shop together, the Cow’s Lane Designer Studio opposite Cultivate on West Essex St, Temple Bar. Many of the 10 are still involved in the Cow’s Lane Market every Saturday, but in addition their goods are available throughout the week. The group is made up of fashion and jewellery designers, a milliner, a metal sculptor, a knitter and a crocheter, and a furniture designer. They also rent out space to various artists including photographers and a linen designer, and are always on the lookout for new talent. Nearly all products are handmade in Ireland by the people that sell it to you, so you can meet the makers of your purchases, not something that is typical anymore. The 10 run and man the shop themselves, so you can even get personal custom-service ensuring that you get exactly what you want. The shop is open from 11:00-18:00 Monday to Saturday, until 19:00 on Thursdays and from 12:00-16:00 on Saturdays. And the website is www.cowslanedesignerstudio.ie.

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

ALAN PHELAN – IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
Alan Phelan’s exhibition “Fragile Absolutes” is on show in the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) from 22 July-01 Nov.
A new IMMA-commissioned sculpture, Goran’s Stealth Yugo, 2009, created to coincide with the exhibition, is located in the Museum’s Formal Gardens. The new commission began in 2006 during a residency in Belgrade, Serbia, where Phelan collaborated with Goran Krstiæ, a car designer from the Zastava/Yugo car factory in the city of Kragujevac. The work resembles a stage in the design process, where 3d modelling is used to approximate a structural framework for a new car design. This phase has been rendered in chrome-plated steel, supported by extended twin exhaust pipes, attached to an underwater stabilising base. (Museum Detail: Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital, Military Road, Kilmainham, Dublin 8, www.imma.ie, Tues-Sat: 10:00-17:30, Sun+Bank Holidays: 12:00-17:30. from 05 June-18 Sept: Thurs: 10:00-20:00)

BUBBLE – SCIENCE GALLERY
After a hugely successful “Infectious” exhibition, the Science Gallery will fascinate us now with bubbles. I was at the launch last night and it is amazing how bubbles turn men (and women) into smiling children.
From 31 Jul – 25 Sept, foams, froths and physics form BUBBLE at Science Gallery. This iridescent exhibition of changing shapes and colours, fantastic bubble structures and experiments with soap films is brought to you in collaboration with the Exploration Station and leading Trinity College physicists Denis Weaire and Stefan Hutzler.
BUBBLE will allow the visitor to get their hands wet, step inside the bubble and learn about the physics of foams. This ever-changing exhibit puts the visitor at the centre of creativity, and with a range of workshops and experiments the LATHER LAB will be your chance to delve deep into bubbles.
Bring your children, they will enjoy it and don’t worry there is very little physics and a LOT of bubbly fun.
Admission is free and opening hours are Tuesday-Friday 12:00-20:00 and Saturday-Sunday 12:00-18:00. The gallery is in the Naughton Building at the Pearse Street/Westmoreland Street end of the Trinity College campus. www.sciencegallery.com

HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. Especially all the photographers among you should find plenty of four-legged models. And if you did take some nice pictures, maybe you can share them with all by letting me know the link to your online photo album. A search on Google brought me to this website: www.flickr.com/photos/deadlyphoto/sets/72157605373424018 Have a look at the pictures, it is a different world!! …and definitely not what you would expect in the centre of a European capital. ;-)
A concerned reader was surprised that I mentioned this event in previous months because regularly there are question marks and as well issues regarding the proper treatment of the horses. I do share the concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. In addition I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts, I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. The market is going ahead with or without spectators, for this reason I don’t think watching the activities condones any bad treatment of animals. …but please decide for yourself!

CAR BOOT SALE – HAROLD’S CROSS GREYHOUND STADIUM
On Sunday 02 Aug from 09:00 the Harold’s Cross Greyhound Stadium Car Boot Sale (every second week) will take place again on the car park of the stadium (151 Harold’s Cross Road, Dublin). Visiting is free, selling costs EUR 15 for cars and EUR 20 for vans and spaces might still be available. Contact Damian on 086 8371573 or email lowth666@yahoo.ie for more details. Gates open 8am for Sellers and 9am for Buyers. An older announcement is here
www.gumtree.ie/dublin/38/39008638.html but the 02 Aug is definitely the next date.

FOOD MARKET – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
From 10:00-17:15 the Farmleigh House Food Market will take place on Sunday and Monday (02-03 Aug). www.farmleigh.ie/culturalevents/foodmarket/#d.en.1506

On Sun 02 Aug the next Crafty Market will take place in the Dublin Food Co-Op Hall on Newmarket Square, Dublin 8. 45 stalls full of handmade crafts and original artworks, hot food, free parking and live music on stage will be provided and with a very wet looking weather forecast the other good news is that the market is indoors. This is an outdoor event and it will take place from 15:00-16:00 on Sun 02 Aug. The Xi’ An Sí (pronounced ‘Shee Ann Shee’) is an amalgamation of both the Chinese and Irish languages. ‘XiAn’ is the city where the group first established themselves and ‘Si’ is derived from the most fascinating of Irish traditions, the fairy. Traditional Irish tunes are played on beautiful antique instruments such as, the Gu Zheng, a twenty-one stringed plucked instrument that is part of the zither family; the Er Hu, a two stringed bowed instrument which orginated in China over a thousand years ago and the Pi Pa a four stringed plucked instrument with a pear shaped wooden body which can be traced back to the Qin dynasty (221–206B.C.).

______Next Week_______________

———Monday————————–

BANK HOLIDAY
Yes, today is August Bank Holiday and if you didn’t know about it is hopefully a nice surprise for you. Traditionally bank holidays are not tooo busy when it comes to free events. For some reason event organisers shy away from bank holidays. Maybe because Irish people are expected to visit their family and non-Irish people leave the country? ;-) At least most of the shops will be open so there is something to do. If you drive, keep in mind that Pay&Display is not enforced in Dublin on a bank holiday. This means on-street parking is for free. However, for Loading Bays and Bus Lanes the DAY is relevant (i.e. Monday) NOT the fact that is a Bank Holiday and feels like a Sunday to you. ;-)
Another thing I should mention: Often Regular Events do NOT take place on a bank holiday. So you better check!

FOCUS IRELAND FUNDRAISING TRIATHLON
Registration for this event is now closed. (Because it is a fundraising event every participant had to raise EUR 250 to take part!) I am not sure if volunteers are still needed but you can find out about that by ringing 01-8815916 (Start on Monday morning: 06:00!!) and you can find out more details about the volunteering on www.focusireland.ie/htm/fundraising/challenges/triathlon/volunteers.htm But what you definitely can still do is to watch the event and to cheer on the participants. It takes place on Sun 2 Aug from 07:30. Normally there is a swim (750m in the Grand Canal Basin) first, but if there was heavy rain before as it is forecast, then the swim might get cancelled due to the unsafe water quality. Then a cycle trip (20km) will follow and finally a run (5km) will conclude the competition. Approx. 250 participants are expected and a course map is here www.focusireland.ie/htm/fundraising/challenges/triathlon/venue.htm. The triathlon starts at 09:00, but road closures are in place from 07:30-12:30 in the areas of City Quay, Sir John Rogerson Quay, Forbes St, Cardiff Lane, Benson St and Hanover Quay.

FOOD MARKET – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
From 10:00-17:15 the Farmleigh House Food Market will take place on Sunday and Monday (02-03 Aug). www.farmleigh.ie/culturalevents/foodmarket/#d.en.1506

GAZE FIM FESTIVAL
GAZE 2009 is the largest LGBT film event (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT) in Ireland and offers a programme with over 67 premieres, new independent features, documentaries, shorts, award winners and experimental films between 30 July and 03 August. The festival takes place in the IFI and the Light House Cinema (Smithfield) and like nearly all film festivals does not include free film screenings. However there is one free event in case you are interested. The GAZE Festival Review in the Light House Cinema on Mon 03 Aug at 13:30 is a free but ticketed event. I am not sure if tickets are still available, in fact it is unlikely. However, you could try and ring the Light House Cinema box office on 01 879 7601
The Festival Review session is an opportunity to discuss the highlights, talking points, celebrations and controversies of the festival with leading film critics and experts from home and abroad. www.gaze.ie/films.aspx?contentid=84

LAZY BAND – BEWLEY’S CAFÉ THEATRE
It was confirmed to me that this event is still taking place and a number of people commented in a very positive way. Unfortunately I haven’t experienced it myself yet, but it seems that it is an event worth recommending.
A new event has been happening on Monday nights (every Monday night) in Bewley’s Cafe Theatre, 78 Grafton Street. The recently-formed music collective called the ‘Lazy Band’ is playing roots, trad and folk songs from Ireland, England, America and anything else they like. Admission is free and the bar serves during the show. Some people order up pizzas from downstairs. Laid-back atmosphere, unplugged and informal, and worth a visit! The event starts at 20:00 and goes until 22:00.

ALCHEMIST CAFÉ – NANO-TECHNOLOGY LECTURE
“Cafe Scientifique” is a forum for the discussion of important and interesting scientific issues that is much more informal and accessible than a public lecture. The audience will consist of people who are interested in science but generally never have the opportunity to discuss their views with and ask questions of someone “in the know”. No scientific knowledge will be assumed by the speakers so that everyone can participate. In Ireland the Café Scientifique is called “Alchemist Café” and they organise regular events about very interesting topics. The Alchemist Café in August will discuss “The nano-environment: nanotechnology applications and impact on the environment”.
Dr. Iseult Lynch is the Strategic Research Manager for the Centre for BioNano Interactions, which looks at the relationships between engineered objects at the nanoscale and living systems, and is one of the top nanosafety experts in Ireland.
Further details about the topic can be found here www.alchemistcafedublin.com/ The Alchemist Café takes place in The Mercantile Pub in Dame Street, Dublin 2 and will take place o Wed 05 Aug from 20:00. Admission is free and all are welcome.

SOULPOWER – LIVING ROOM
SoulPower, a really great funk soul tribute band, is a must see! I know them well and I can’t recommend them highly enough. Thursdays are bad for me because I am writing this Event Guide on Thursday nights, but I will definitely try to go to this gig next Thursday. This 8 piece band play the music of all the great soul artists, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Charles Wright and many more. The lead singer is amazing and all the band members are hugely talented and experienced. So if you are feeling funky, get yourself down to the Living Room (formerly the Bleu Note) every Thursday from 21:30. Admission is free. GAA “HAVE A GO-DAY”
Eoin Vaughan, the GAA development officer in Trinity College informed me about an interesting event on Sat 08 Aug on the Clanna Gael GAA grounds in Ringsend. They are launching a pilot “Have a go day” where people with no prior experience of Gaelic games will get coaching in the basic skills from some of Ireland’s top coaches.
Participants will learn about the ancient game of Hurling, Camogie, Gaelic Football, Irish handball and Rounders (like baseball). Eoin tells me that interest has been phenomenal so far and that they expect a big turnout on the day from people all over the world. Have a look at
www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=124863194383 to find out more.

DUN LAOGHAIRE FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURE
Is this Festival in your calendar? It will take place at the end of August. So there is another bit of time, but it is THE must-go event in greater Dublin for me – make sure you don’t miss it. The website is up and you can already check out the programme. The festival will take place on 29+30 August and I guess we are hugely lucky this year that it has not been affected by budget cuts. Who knows if there will be enough money to bring it back in 2010. festivalofworldcultures.com/

IKEA PARKING CHARGES LUNACY
Have you heard this incredible story? It is BEYOND odd and it is just lunacy or even idiocy. I feel a “Falling Down” moment coming on when I hear nonsense like that: Ikea in Ballymun finally opened and I guess the employees and Ikea itself are thanking the lords that all the problems Fingal County Council and other authorities caused in recent months. Ok the M50 near Ikea is still not finished, but that’s no surprise in a country where 90% of the building projects are delayed on overpriced. Now this is not where the issues stop: Ikea has been forced by Fingal County Council and An Bord Pleanala (that’s the organisation that decides if you get planning permission for a building) to open the shop after 11:00 to deter people from going to the shop during traffic rush hour. It now emerges that to avoid you to go to the shop or leave the shop between 15:00 and 20:00 you will have to pay EUR 3 parking fee (seemingly collected by Fingal County Council!!!!) if you leave the car park during this time. Allegedly this fee could be increased to 6 Euro or even 10 Euro if people don’t stay away from the shop during this time! So Fingal County Council is happy to take the 500 jobs and the rates (business taxes) from the shop, but they are trying to sabotage it as much as possible!?!?! How about making sure that the infrastructure is available instead of deterring people to buy goods? An Bord Pleanala and Fingal County Management are definitely gone nuts! www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055620232

AMAZING U2 STAGE??
Last week was FULL of comments about the U2 concert. Twitter, Facebook, e-mails, blogs, all social media “outlets” were buzzing about … the stage!! I wasn’t at the concert myself, but saw the interesting pictures of .. the stage! Now, forgive me if I am wrong, I THOUGHT this was a concert and my naïve way of thinking did suggest to me that at a concert the stage is the least important aspect. Why did hardly anybody talk about the gig, the songs, the show, the dancing/costumes (Oops, wrong band? Well, then maybe Bono’s glasses?). 250,000 people at a concert and they talk more about the stage than about the concert? This is odd!! Of and if you want to see the main talking point from a different perspective: www.flickr.com/photos/r1g2b3/3751146339/in/set-72157621679888789/

—————–
I did absolutely not feel like writing this week’s Event Guide. Some events this week took the spring out of my step and being positive and cheery today was hard work. But I do know that most of you are interested in free events and not that much in any upsets in my life, so I did get another Event Guide done. The show must go on. :-/ Have a nice weekend.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section.
