Event Guide 53: Pipeworks, Tallaght-Rathfarnham Art Trail, Chapelizod Festival, Conversation Exchange, Mexican Tall Ship, Tibet Protest, Dublin Pride, Darklight Festival

Hi all!

What a great week! It started with a nice and VERY much appreciated surprise last Friday when I got the first donation from one of you! I received it via Paypal through tinyurl.com/68dmlq and it would be great if a few more of you would try to surprise me as well. :-)

Then the weekend was full of fun and joy at the Street Performance World Championship where you could see thousands of laughing and smiling faces and if you have missed it, you have missed one of the best events during the year! The organising teams around Mark Duckenfield and Conor McCarty have done a brilliant job again and were rewarded with huge crowds of happy people. If you haven’t heard yet, the Street Performance World Champion 2008 are the “English Gents”, on 2nd place is the “Space Cowboy” (after two wins in previous years) and the 3rd price went to the “Beautiful Stu”. I found it VERY difficult to decide for ONE of the performers, but in the end I voted for Mario. I am already looking forward to next year’s Street Performance event and maybe my all time favourite “Pedro” from Spain, who was here in the first year, will be back? ;-) If you want to see pictures (or post your own) you should go here: pix.ie/explore/tag/spwc

And on Tuesday evening another highlight of the week was the Dublin Event Guide Birthday get-together! We met in the Porterhouse in Temple Bar and 20 of you made it. We had a great evening and I even got a MASSIVE birthday cake. :-) Thanks to Geraldine, Pamela, Elaine and Ray for cake, card and 1st Birthday badge! :-) And thanks to everyone who came! More had intended to come, but Euro 2008, training, concerts, dance workshops and a few other things prevented us from being close to 40 people. Maybe next time! :-)

You probably know by now, that I am not saying “non-free is bad”, but that I AM saying “free is better”, With that in mind, I think it is a good idea to reward the pubs and venues that regularly offer free live music or DJs with increased business and to help with that, I suggest that we put a list together of all venues that offer something for free if you go there. Your help would be appreciated: Send me a mail with the pubs, clubs, venues that you know that have live music or DJs and do NOT charge an admission fee. For the start I will limit the area to “between the canals and from Ringsend to Heuston Station” and we might expand it later.
Some pubs – and this is an incomplete list – that are in this category are: Porterhouse Temple Bar, Porterhouse Central, Thomas Read’s Parliament Street, Thomas Read’s Smithfield, Bruxelles near Grafton Street, Fitzsimmons in Temple Bar, Pravda new Ha’Penny Bridge, Mssrs Maguire near O’Connell Bridge, Turk’s Head in Parliament Street (free before midnight).
Can you help with this list? Send your list to dublineventguide@gmail.com

And finally:
I informed you last week that Tower Records, in their wisdom, have decided not to publicise In-store performances anymore in an easily available way. Their website does not contain ANY event information and the Myspace page is set to private. I did give them a call about that and was told that all events are listed on their website (Hmm, maybe they should check!), on Myspace (the “private” setting was explained as “maybe a myspace computer glitch, we have definitely not set it like that”. Hmmm, what can I say? www.myspace.com/tower_records), and on www.entertainment.ie (I was able to find ONE event, but not more.). If you want to find out about In-Store Performances in Tower Records in a less cumbersome way, give them a call 6713250 (then dial “4” for marketing) or send a mail to info@towerrecords.ie.

______Competition______________

All events in this section are non-free events, but the organisers are making tickets available for you to win. If you win, your name will be on the guest list. If you don’t win, but will go to the event anyway, help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

In recent weeks it has happened a number of times that winners of tickets didn’t make it to the event in the end. I understand that life is full of unexpected occurrences and that there can always be things that could interfere with you going to an event. But if you know that you can’t make it, it would be great if you could let me know, especially if you did win the tickets. That way, I could pass the tickets on to someone else so that they don’t go to waste. Thanks!

CHAPELIZOD COMMUNITY FESTIVAL
The Chapelizod Community Festival will take place from the 29 June – 06 July and the organisers have put an extensive programme together. Some events are free, but since a good few are not free, they have agreed to make free tickets available to the Dublin Event Guide Community for a competition. And with that we will try something different in this case. There are so many events that it is difficult to do separate draws for all events individually, so I am inviting you to take part in a “reverse competition” whereby I don’t tell you what you can get, but you tell me what you want. :-) It works like this: All events are listed below, you choose for which event you would like a pair of tickets and send me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number and with the Subject Line “Chapelizod” and behind that with the name of the event. The name that you should add behind “Chapelizod” is in the list below indicated with “*” around it. The mail has to be with me at 12:00 on 24 June. I hope that is not too complicated and I can assure you that I will be accepting incorrect “Chapelizod” spellings as well. ;-) Further information about the artists and the events you can find on www.chapelizodfestival.com/index.htm

TANGO CLASSES
I alerted you in the last two weeks to this:
“Natural Tango (naturaltango.blogspot.com) are running Tango classes every Monday in Turk’s Head in Parliament Street, near Temple Bar. John Rownan and Erika Lerma, who both studied and practised Tango for many years and who were taught in Buenos Aires among other places are teaching Argentine Tango every week. The classes are 19:30-20:30 Beginners Class, 20:30-21:30 Intermediate-Advanced Class. After 21:30 a Tango Club will give you the chance to practise what you have learned with great music. The classes are drop-in classes and you don’t need a partner to participate. The cost for a class (Beginners or Intermediate/Advanced) PLUS entry to the Tango Club is EUR 10 and you don’t need to pre-book.”
During the week I had a further chat and he was wondering if we there was a way to find out how big the Tango interest was in the Dublin Event Guide Community. A good few entered the competition for the two pairs of tickets, and from that I can guess that there is quite a sizeable interest. But to asses it better, I have two questions for you a) Are you interested in Tango and b) Would you be interested in taking part in a class if it was at the right time and for the right price. It would be great if you could let me know to dublineventguide@gmail.com (Subject: Tango Class) and I will try to get some tickets to raffle among the people that send a reply back!
By the way, I was talking to Giuliana who won a pair of tickets for last Monday’s class and she entirely enjoyed it and is thinking about continuing.
———
And the pair of tickets for the class in Turk’s Head for the 23 June was won by Mary O’Brien! Congratulations!
——–
John+Erika teach now in Liberty Hall as well if that suits you better: Saturdays @ Liberty Hall Theatre, Eden Quay: Beginners Class 20:00, Intermediate-Advanced Class 21:00, Milonga (Tango Club) 22:00-00:55. Beginners Class + Milonga EUR 10, Intermediate Class + Milonga EUR 15, Class only or Milonga only EUR10
He says: “There’s a full bar, there’s a great floor, there’ll be excellent music, and we can dance until nearly 1am!”

______Dublin News______________

NEW ROLE FOR AMBASSADOR
This is already old news from the beginning of the year, but I expect that most of you haven’t head about it yet. So here it is:
The Ambassador, one of the oldest theatres in the state will be redeveloped as a new Dublin Central Library under plans which form part of Dublin City Council’s EUR80 million framework for Parnell Square. The existing Central Library will be relocated from the Ilac Centre where it currently is since 1986. The Central Library receives roughly half a million visitors every year who avail of the many services available. The intention is to provide a library of approximately 3,300 sq. m. (the current library is 2,124 sq. m.). A new glazed structure between the Ambassador building and the gable end of the Rotunda Hospital will provide additional space for the library.
The Ambassador building opened as a theatre in order to raise funds for the Rotunda Hospital which opened next door in the 1750s. The hospital still owns the building. Over the years the building has been used as a cinema and in more recent times as a music venue.
If this plan finally goes ahead (the Ambassador is a protected structure, so there could be delays and other hurdles.) I assume that this most likely is the end of another music venue in Dublin.

CONVERSATION EXCHANGE
In the context of the information about the Ambassador and having been reminded by Niamh Nestor, it is fitting to provide this information:
The Dublin Libraries provide a brilliant service for everybody who wants to improve his/her language skills. For a number of years they run the hugely popular “Conversation Exchanges”. Conversation Exchanges allow you to practise your new language skills with native speakers in both directions. This means that if, for example, you go to a Spanish/English Conversation Exchange, there should be native English Speakers and native Spanish Speakers who both want to practise the language they are learning with the native speakers.
Dates and times may vary, it is advisable to check with location in advance.

Since many of the members of the Dublin Event Guide Community are not Irish, this list might help you to find a Conversation Exchange group, if you want to improve your English. I am not 100% sure if the conversation exchange is totally free or if a small admission is charged, so maybe check with the library before you try it out.

SEA STALLION
Have you heard about the Sea Stallion in the last few months? In 1962 archaeologists excavated five Viking ships at the bottom of Roskilde Fjord in Denmark. The largest of them was a ocean-capable long ship which was built in 1042 in Dublin using the ship-building methods developed by Scandinavians. In 2005 the ship was rebuilt and got the name “Sea Stallion of Glendalough”. In July 2007 a crew of 65 people sailed the boat from Denmark to Dublin and since then it was on display in a special exhibition at the National Museum in Collins Barrack. Now, a year later, the Sea Stallion will go back to Denmark and will be sent off with a farewell party on the 29 June. In next week’s Event Guide I will tell you more about this. But if you haven’t seen the exhibition in the National Museum yet, this weekend is probably the very very last opportunity (if it’s not already too late) to see the exhibition. From the 25 June, the boat will be moored at Customs House Quay. www.seastallion.ie/

SPENCER TUNNICK
Most of the people have heard about the art installations that Spencer Tunnick is intending to create on Saturday in the docklands/IFSC. Art in Dublin is nothing special, but Spencer Tunnick is a photographer who builds his installations with nude people and there is a certain ripple going through the city because of this. I was at least 4 times asked by different people if I will take part or if I would take part. Funny that! :-) However, I can publicly declare that you won’t have to search for my picture on Tunnick’s photos, I won’t be on it. www.spencertunickireland.ie (You can’t register anymore, though.) Instead I will train the whole Saturday and the whole Sunday to teach Krav Maga to a beginners course. If you can’t take part or if you don’t want to put your clothes again after that liberating experience and you feel the urge to send a picture in full “costume” to many people; dublineventguide@gmail.com. I do know how to appreciate art. :-P And won’t distribute it to the whole community unless you insist. :-)

RONNIE WOOD – GALLERY NUMBER ONE
Rolling Stones man Ronnie Wood exhibits his new “Paint It Black” exhibition at Gallery Number One from 19 June – 06 July. The exhibition will show a collection of 40 original artwork and limited edition screen prints.
Many of you know of my “admiration” for exhibition descriptions that are as clear and descriptive as an Estate Agent’s nonsensical marketing blurb. Gallery Number One achieved to be chosen to show this interesting exhibition, but the marketing side went a little overboard in all this enthusiasm, it seems. I just HAVE to quote the official description of the exhibition: “With his signature gesturing style of simple and elegant lines, that can convey anything he chooses, has conjured from a black void, the soul of the Rolling Stones. By not allowing our view to be distracted by anything other then the lines and colors in his command, he has been able to perfectly express the swaggering ballet of Keith, the soulful siren song of Lisa, the rhythmic charge of Charlie, and the vamping powerhouse Mick.” Class! Don’t you think? ;-)
(Gallery Details: Gallery Number One, 1 Castle Street, Dublin 2, www.gallerynumberone.com, Open: Mon-Sat 11:00-18:00, Sun 13:00-18:00)

MARGENES – SPANISH AVANT-GARDE ART
Márgenes: Experimento y Praxis is a month of Spanish contemporary avant-garde art featuring a series of talks, experimental film screenings, multiple sound-screen environments, expanded cinema events, and interventions in the public space. Starting on 12 June, Márgenes will take place at the National Gallery of Ireland, This is Not a Shop gallery, and different public locations in the city of Dublin. A special closing event with food and live music will take place at Phoenix Park on 25 June.
Esperanza Collado, who is the curator of this initiative informed me about it and it sounds very interesting. Some events are already over, but others are still coming up, so I list the remaining events here.
19-25 June
19:00 This is Not a Shop “FOG – Marta Fernández Calvo”, Opening and presentation:
Thursday 18th June. Fog is a participatory artistic intervention work intended to be developed in the landscape. The large fog banks that move across the landscape are the actual starting point of this project. The artist, Marta Fernández Calvo, has created a “portable fog kit” from different photographs of fog taken in Dolominas (Italy). The “kit” will be presented to Dublin inhabitants at a meeting and presentation on the 18th of June at This is Not a Shop, in which people will be welcome to book Fog for its installation during one day in whatever public space they require. The artist will install the piece in a different emplacement every single day between 19th-25th of June. In addition, all request forms to install Fog in the city will be used by the artist to construct a calendar containing the dates and locations in which Fog will be installed in Dublin. The resulting daily documentation process – letters, impressions, photographs, video and sound recordings, etc.- will be simultaneously shown in the gallery, which will become a documentation base of accumulative work generated by Fog.
This is Not a Shop, Benburb Street, Dublin 7.

This is an amazing story that I came across and it is incredible that in this day and age something like that is still possible:
“On the 23rd of June, a private contractor will dispose of 15kg of Hydrogen Cyanide on the land of the Kilbride Army Camp in the Dublin/Wicklow Mountains. This land is in the catchment of the Blessington Lakes, Dublin’s main water supply, and within 10 miles of Dublin City Centre. The Kilbride Army Camp borders a Special Area of Conservation.
The Hydrogen Cyanide is being disposed of on behalf of Rentokill and South Dublin County Council, but rather then sending the toxic waste for incineration in a chemical incinerator, they intend to attach an explosive charge to the canisters, in a manner that would appear to be ‘dispersal’ rather than disposal.
The Army will establish a 1km exclusion zone around the site, and will request that locals vacate their homes for up to a week, and are requesting that grazing animals be removed from the mountains for an unspecified amount of time. Within the exclusion zone there is a commercial salmon hatchery that depends on the pristine water conditions of the Shankill River, a tributary of the River Liffey.”
It seems that Rentokill with the agreement of South Dublin County Council is getting rid of this highly toxic chemical in a VERY strange way. Blowing such a chemical up doesn’t sound to me as if it was disposed of in a responsible way!
Residents in Wicklow and in Walkinstown are protesting against this and if you want to support them, check this site out: www.indymedia.ie/article/88011

WILD POLAND EXHIBITION
Yes, I know some of my Polish friends in Ireland are wild. :-P Michal, is that exhibition about you? ;-)
But don’t worry, I checked! The title is totally harmless and has to with real wildlife. :-) The “Wild Poland. Natural Heritage of Europe” exhibition will be displayed in St. Stephens Green Park in Dublin from 19 June till 06 September 2008. The exhibition consists of 54 large-format (150 x 100 centimetres) nature photographs with descriptions in English and Polish, as well as 6 information boards. All this will be displayed on 30 stands and all pictures are taken by Artur Tabor. During the time of the exhibition a number of accompanying events are planned, e.g. meeting with the photographer, nature film screenings, concerts, workshops, lectures. www.wildpoland.org/ Thanks to Niamh Nestor for telling me.

DUBLIN PRIDE PARADE 2008
The 25th LGBTQ Pride Festival that is running since 13 June is culminating in the Pride Parade through Dublin on Sunday. The parade will start at 14:15 and the pre-parade entertainment starts at 13:00 at Parnell Sq North. I am not completely sure what the route of the Pride Parade is, but would expect this: Parnell Sq North, Parnell Sq East, O’Connell Street, Westmoreland Street, College Green, Dame Street, Lord Edward Street, Christ Church Place with an end at the Civic Offices Amphitheatre.
www.dublinpride.ie.
Last year I didn’t know about the Pride Parade and was only by coincidence in the Dame Street area when the Parade passed by, it was fun to watch! The gaiety in the air (both meanings!) was nearly touchable and did transfer to the people lining the street, but no worries, only one of the two meanings is infectious! ;-))))

PIERRE-EMMANUEL GODET – CENTRAL LIBRARY, ILAC CENTRE
The Dublin based French Artist Pierre-Emmanuel Godet will exhibit at the ILAC Shopping Center Central Library, Dublin 1 until 05 July. All the works made between March and July 2008 are presented here for the first time to the public. The exhibition includes the 12 last paintings made live in the streets of Dublin. A special performance will take place in the library on Saturday 21 June with the making of the last piece between 13:00 and 17:00. www.pagazine.com

TEMPLE BAR MARKETS
Don’t forget that the Temple Bar Markets, the Temple Bar Food Market on Meeting House Square and the Temple Bar Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane, are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-17:00.

______Sunday __________________

It seems that I gather more and more information about REGULAR Sunday events than once-off events. I hope that is ok with you. In general I avoid listing regular events every week, but it seems that Sunday’s are particularly prone to some regularity (see: the Sunday Roast! ;-) ), so maybe I should continue listing them. Let me know your opinion!

SUNDAY AT NOON – CLASSICAL MUSIC AT HUGH LANE GALLERY
The Hugh Lane Gallery’s Sunday at Noon concerts are back. This week Therese Fahy (piano) performs “Messiaen: Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jesus”. The concert starts at 12:00 and admission is free. www.hughlane.ie/concerts/whatson.asp

CAPOEIRA DEMONSTRATION
On 22 June at 13:00 a Capoeira Street Roda is taking place in Grafton Street. This will be a great demonstration of Capoeira, the Brazilian blend of dance, martial art and game, with the real music and instruments from Brazil. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The dance/game/martial art is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts.
These Street roda’s are going to take place most Sundays during Summer time. Mundo Capoeira also organises workshops and performances regularly and you can find information about their events on www.capoeiraireland.com.
I have seen Capoeira on You Tube, but never in reality and I will definitely try to make it to the demonstration during the summer!
Thanks to Yvonne Sala for that information!

ROLLERBLADING IN PHOENIX PARK
The Rollerblading “Meet&Train” is meeting again this Sunday at 13:00 at the Papal Cross. Unfortunately I won’t be able to go this week, though. See www.skatetraindublin.blogspot.com for details.

JAZZ BRUNCH – COLETTE QUARTET
Colette Henry, a member of the Dublin Event Guide community is a jazz singer and with her Colette Quartet will entertain you for free on all Sundays in June in the 27 Club (Basement) in Cassidy’s in Westmoreland Street, very near to O’Connell Bridge. On Sunday 22 June between 13:30 and 16:00 you can enjoy laid back jazz, blues and Latin music with the Colette Quartet. The event is free.

CZECH MOVIES
Katerina, one of the members of the Dublin Event Guide Community, informs me about a new Movie event in O’Connell Street. Every second week a group of volunteers, sponsored by the Czech Embassy, organise the screening of a Czech film in 33 – 35 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1. The screening starts at 16:30 and admission is free. All films are Czech with English subtitles and are all-time classics and new movies from the Czech Republic.
This week’s film on the 22 June is “Bony a klid” (1987) [in English: Big Money].
It tells the story of the ups and downs of being young in Czechoslovakia in the final years of the communist regime.

WEEKEND EVENTS
If you are just looking for Sunday events, please check the event list for Saturday as well. Many events are taking place on Saturday AND Sunday, but it wouldn’t make sense to list them twice.

GARDINER STREET GOSPEL CHOIR
“My” Gospel Choir is taking a summer break until 14 September. From September until June I do the sound engineering for the choir, that’s why I call it “my” Gospel Choir. :-) This Sunday, however, will be the last mass before September and if you always wanted to hear and see us, you should make sure that you come at 19:30 to Gardiner Street Church at the top of Upper Gardiner Street (near the junction with Dorset Street – the church looks more like a Greek temple).
Louise Foxe, who was a great musical director for the last three years, will be leaving us at the end of June, so it will be a special evening.
Come along, even if you are not tooo much into masses. Everyone is welcome, independent from your believe or level of spirituality.

I know this is not really a cultural event and not really free either, but, hey, if you can save lots, that can’t be a bad thing. :-)

The film screenings will be complemented by discussions and workshops.
All movies are in Original language with English Subtitles. Admission is free. For more information contact 01 402 3108 or rashmi.sawhney@dit.ie. Moving Worlds has been organised by the Forum on Migration and Communications (FOMACS) at DIT, in association with various cultural institutes (incl. Instituto Cervantes, Goethe-Institut, Austrian embassy, Alliance Francaise and Create).
The first part of the series will run from 22 May until 10 July 2008 with a screening every Thursday evening at 18:00. Part two will take place from 2 October 2008 until 20 November 2008.

The Morecambe bay disaster – in which a gang of Chinese cockle-pickers found themselves trapped by the fast-moving tide momentarily lifted the lid on the invisible immigrant workforce who toil for a pittance in the factories, warehouses and mudflats of England. “Ghosts” sets out to explore the workings of a clandestine economy that is supposedly illegal but tacitly condoned.
Jabez Lam, human rights activist and coordinator of the Chinese Immigration Concern Committee, London, will introduce the film.
Jabez Lam will also participate in a workshop on 27 June 2008, from 10 am – 12 noon in the Goethe-Institut.

_______________________________

The summer will start this weekend (21 June) and I hope that more good weather will come with it. The nights are super short and writing the Event Guide through the night means that I started when it was still bright, it never got really dark, and from 04:20 it was already bright again. It amazes me every year. :-) The downside of the 21 June is that from now on the evenings start getting shorter again. That part I really don’t like!

Oh one last thing: Help me keeping your fingers crossed for the German football team at the Euro2008 if your team is not in the competition anymore or you have no other affiliation. :-) I am not a big football fan, but the next few games promise to be interesting and exiting, let’s hope that we see lots of good games.

Enjoy the weekend!

–Joerg

It is sent to anybody who is interested for free and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
