Dublin Event Guide 715: A Summer in Dublin Full of Events! – Dublin Libraries Summer Events, Round Room 200 Exhibition, Festival of Curiosity, Daily Botanic Gardens Tours

Dublin Event Guide (for free events)

A Summer in Dublin Full of Events!

Dublin Libraries Summer Events, Round Room 200 Exhibition, Festival of Curiosity, Daily Botanic Gardens Tours

Hi all!

From 26 July pubs, restaurants and cafés are allowed to open their doors again for indoor services…but only for people that have proof that they have received the vacci ne or that recovered from an infection less than six months ago.

This is probably a first and a quite worrying first! Imagine four years ago a pub owner would have asked you for your medical history before letting you in?

Imagine this example: “Can you proof that you do not have a Mental Health issue? No? Sorry, you can’t enter our premises.” I would have hoped that people in this country had protested vehemently.

Not now! Now the state forces you to give personal details about your medical history to a pub or restaurant employee and we just accept? People have stopped using the encrypted (!!) WhatsApp because Facebook might send them some additional ads, but they are prepared to reveal private medical data to a pub owner? Very strange times!

The bill that enforces this new level of control is intentionally written in language that makes it difficult to understand (data.oireachtas.ie/ie/oireachtas/bill/2021/100/eng/initiated/b10021d.pdf), but even more concerning is that it is justified on Page 4 through totally un-proven scientific claims.

You might or might not think that the law is discriminatory, but imagine the Irish government would decide next year that it is a risk to the public if people with mental health issues enter a pub? Or people with a disability enter a restaurant? Would you then think it is discriminatory?

Yes, I definitely hope that indoor events can re-start again as soon as possible, but if a state singles out groups in society for positive or negative reasons, we should get worried.

Let’s hope that these rules won’t bve extended to museums and galleries and other cultural venues! In the meantime, the number of events are slowly increasing, but  the change is VERY slow. The good new is though that the Dublin Event Guide will continue the place where you find all high-quality cultural events that are free, so stick with us. ;-)

And don’t forget that you can sign up to the weekly Dublin Event Guide e-mail newsletter here: www.DublinEventGuide.com

The Dublin Event Guide is a free service, but it is not free to run it. For website, software licenses and to send the Dublin Event Guide e-mail every week, there are monthly cost of approx. 200 Euro.

The arrangement for the last 10+ years has been that I find the events and create the weekly newsletter and you help with the cost through donations. In the last 1.5 years that deal is not working anymore and instead I have to also put in money to pay the bills.

Please help me to fix that! It is unsustainable for me to invest about 20 hours per week in the Dublin Event Guide for no charge and then also having to pay a large part of the bills. So I REALLY need your help to keep the Dublin Event Guide alive.

Any amount is appreciated, but If you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that. If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee. I won’t actually drink the coffee, but will use the money for the Dublin Event Guide.

For donations, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. In case it doesn’t work for you, the old links are below and can also be used. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

You can donate here via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees (or Hot Chocolates!) for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

Finally, there is also another way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ FESTIVAL OF CURIOSITY
Thu 22 – Sun 25 July
The Festival of Curiosity is a yearly festival of science, arts, design and technology. It will take place from Thursday until Sunday and will – unsurprisingly – be a bit different than in previous years. But nevertheless, it will be a festival full of events and while in normal years getting tickets is really really hard, this year there are still plenty of tickets available, but you should book as soon as possible. Go to festivalofcuriosity.ie/programme/ to find the list of events and to make your bookings. Many if not most events are free, but for some of the free ones donations are suggested.

+++ Inside Out Summer Library Events
From Sat 10 July until Sat 14 August, a series of free summer libraries events for for children and families will take place online and outdoors. The outdoors events will be at the libraries in Ballyfermot, Ballymun, Coolock, Phibsboro and Walkinstown. The events are workshops and performances and in most cases require pre-booking. all detail are here: www.dublincitylibraries.ie/ Many events will “sell” out quite quickly, so have a look at events even further in advance. In addition Dublin Libraries have that odd habit to close sales (even if events are not “sold” out yet) a few days before the event takes place, so you really have to plan with a bit of a longer time horizon.

+++ This Man is An Island – Audio Play – Civic Theatre Tallaght
01-31 July – all day
Online Being an adult can be a real challenge sometimes. But as long as you have your friends all will be well. Or maybe not? “This man is an island” is a story of a friendship under pressure. The World is changing. Constantly changing. And it makes the friendship complicated. This Audio Play is performed at the Civic Theatre in Tallaght and admission is free or “Pay What You Can”. Find out more on book tickets via www.civictheatre.ie/whats-on/this-man-is-an-island/

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or NLP or some Business related “soft skills”? Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest cost for courses this month will be around 12.99. Check out the website at shor.by/GqCk And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ Visit Dublin Castle for free
Until the end of 2021, entry to Dublin Castle is free for all visitors. You will be able to visit the State Apartments on a self-guided tour. There are currently no guided tours and therefore the Medieval Undercroft and Chapel Royal are not accessible. Opening hours are Mon-Sun & Bank Holidays: 09:45-17:45 (last admission 17:15). Tickets can be booked at dublincastle.admit-one.eu/?p=calendar&ev=SELFGUIDE for free there will also a limited number of tickets available at the ticket desk.

+++ National Gallery tickets available here
The National Gallery is usually free anyway, but in current times you will have to book tickets to get access and you have to enter the building on the Merrion Street side. Tickets are available here: www.nationalgallery.ie/visit-us/book-your-ticket The National Gallery also is running events again and because the events have limited number of spaces, they can book out relatively fast, at least before I can write about the events, so check out the events 1-2 weeks in advance here www.nationalgallery.ie/whats-on and then book tickets for them.

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
