Hi all!

A momentous day! Today is the 11/11/11 and it will be another eleven years to 2/2/22 before we have four identical digits again, but for most of us ;-) it will NEVER happen again that we will see SIX (or more) identical digits in the date. The next time is in the next century on 11 Nov 2111! So if numbers mean anything today, then today is a special day and I hope you remembered it at 11:11 in the morning.
But that’s not all! :-) Today you have the 230th issue of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events” in front of you AND this is the first issue that reaches more than 10,000 (!!) readers. Wow!

We can’t fill Croke Park yet ;-) , but based on the published figures, both the whole Convention Centre (on all floors) and the Point Theatre / O2 (seated) are too small if all of us came together there. That is some sizeable number.

With your significant help (by spreading the word), you and I have achieved a great thing on reaching 10,000 in complete non-commercial, spare-time mode and there is no end in sight. (Imagine where we would be if I focused full time on the Event Guide! ;-) ) Thanks for your help! I had set end of the year as the target date for this goal and since we are weeks early, we might as well start with working towards the next goal early. But what should the next goal be? 12,000? Where will I start this week! I expected that the list of events would be a littls shorter and got totally caught out today. Sooo many events again! Well, I am not complaining, as you can imagine. I have a very busy week ahead of me and again can’t do most of the things I would like to do, but if I had time for all, I would do this:

On Saturday and Sunday the DIY Skillshare event in Ranelagh has some very interesting events on offer and the Winter Fair in Dalkey sounds like a nice thing to do to. The Word War I event in the National Museum in Collins Barracks on Saturday would definitely interest me as well and then in the evening I plan to go to the once off event of the Rhythm & Groove Orchestra in the County Bar in Lucan. It will be great!

On Sunday evening, you will find me at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass as every week and during the day I will be at an NLP course.

On Monday Science Week stats and there are a good few interesting events that are worth checking out! The Instituto Cervantes talk on Monday evening is something I would absolutely love to experience. Have a look at Absastos 2.0 in the Monday section. On Tuesday the Alchemist Café and the Open Mic Idea Jam are on my wavelength. On Wednesday an interesting film screening in the Instituto Cervantes, a Dublintellectual event and an intriguing Pool Billiard Show. You could nicely finish the day with Inn Jokes in Kilmainham! On Thursday I will write Event Guide again, but the rest of you might be interested in the Tidal Energy talk at the RDS or the Chemistry of the Cosmos talk.

Sooo much happening! And I didn’t even mention all the Santas that are abseiling from their sleighs to switch on lights down here!

CHRIST WILL RETURN – TICKET COMPETITION
The “No Drama Theatre” will present Arthur Miller’s “Resurrection Blues” directed by Brian Quinn from 15-19 Nov (20:00) in the Teachers’ Club, Parnell Sq., Dublin 1. They will ask the questions “Will you believe him?”, “What will you do?” and “Could we really crucify again?”. So there is definitely a social and political relevance to this play in our society and the No Drama Theatre has chosen an interesting play with this controversial yet comical satirical production. CITY RACING DUBLIN 2012
Some details of a very interesting free event in June 2012 have emerged. For the Bavaria City Racing Dublin event a motorsport race through Dublin City Centre will take place. And former world champion Jenson Button and his McLaren-Mercedes Formula 1 car will be a central feature of this event. Formula 1 teams will take part but not race in Dublin’s streets and it is not completely clear to me yet what will take place, but the City Racing in Rotterdam last August attracted approx. 500,000 spectators and a similar event took place in Moscow. The track starts at the Convention Centre, continues along Customs House Quay, then crosses Butt Bridge, goes through D’Olier Street, College Green, Dame Street back to the chequered flag on O’Connell Bridge. The route doesn’t make sense yet, but I am sure all will be revealed closer to the date. The event will take place on 03 June 2012 and an audience of 150,000 people is expected. The Irish Times writes “Attendance will be free for the vast majority coming to watch some of the best in the world of motorsport race through Dublin city centre, however, some ticketed zones will be in place. […] A spokesman for the event said that they expected that 94 per cent of the people coming to the event would do so free of charge.” If the statisticians from the St. Patrick’s Day Festival will get anywhere near this event, we will be told that 1.5 mio people attended it (some of you might remember the impossible claims of audience numbers of the St. Patrick’s Day organisers), but I am really looking forward to this event and who cares if 100,000 or 10 mio attend. ;-)

UNIVERSITY FEES IN THE UK
Thousands of students protested against the tripling of tuition fees in the UK up to close to GBP 10,000 (per year or per semester?). This is a shocking amount and we can only hope that our politicians in Ireland will not come up with a similar and horrendous idea. BEATRICE O’CONNELL – MOXIE STUDIOS
17 Nov – 28 Nov: Moxie Studios, Plane/Site Galleries, Pembroke Row, Lad Lane, Off Baggot Street, Dublin 2. – Beatrice O’Connell’s exhibition “The Flood’ and other stories” will be on show in the Moxie Studios. The exhibition will be opened by Ruairi O’Cuiv (Public Art manager, Dublin City Council) on Thurs 17 from 18:00-21:00. Opening hours are 10:00-17:00.
The exhibition explores themes of isolation and vulnerability and individual acts of kindness and affection are contrasted with societal greed. Questions are posed around the individual’s relationship with her surroundings. These questions are interwoven throughout the narrative, allowing metaphors to emerge. The artist draws on her own photographic archive taken while documenting her travels. Theatre and literature are also referenced to explore human vulnerability.

The festival aims to empower people of all walks of life to get involved and take action on the issues that they feel passionate about. There will be 30 completely free workshops and talks promoting DIY culture, Skill-sharing and Activism and with demonstrations of practical solutions, inspiring talks, interactive workshops, alternative technology, exciting projects, live music and networking opportunities, this skill-sharing festival will bring hundreds of people together from local Dublin neighbourhoods and communities across Ireland. The workshops on offer range from everyday skills such as fixing a puncture and composting, to using social media for campaigns, learning about personal legal rights, accessing NAMA properties and using theatre as a tool for social change. The festival is organised by Gluaiseacht, a non-hierarchical environmental and social justice movement bringing together grassroots organisations, concerned individuals and student groups from all over Ireland to raise awareness and take non-violent direct action on social, environmental and political issues.

REGGAE MOVEMENT EXHIBITION – GREEN STREET GALLERY
Sat 12 Nov: Little Green Street Gallery, Little Green Street (off Capel Street), Dublin 1. – The Reggae Movement Exhibition on Tour will present “Soundsystem: From Jamaica to Europe 1950 -1995”. From 09-13 Nov from 10:30-18:00 (elsewhere I found: “12:00 until late”. Not sure which is correct.) every day you can learn about the history of the Soundsystem. In word, music and pictures, the exhibition follows the story of the soundsystem from Jamaica in the 1950s to the UK in the 60s and 70s, and then to Europe. The soundsystems gave birth to ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall, hip-hop, jungle and drum and bass – and taught nations and generations how to dance. Jamaican artist Freestylee illustrates the story with additional artwork by Mau Mau. After opening in Berlin in September, and showing in Amsterdam in October, the Exhibition will be in Dublin for five days. Admission during the day is free. There are gigs and film screenings every evening from 19:00, but I wasn’t able to find out if they are free or not. There are a lot of genuine concerns and some very idealistic and impossible demands, but as a grassroots movement, the protesters definitely should be actively included/considered in the political process in a democracy.

13-25 November: Dublin Libraries
Science Week is Ireland’s biggest annual promotion of science to public. The theme for Science Week Ireland 2011 is “The Chemistry of Life”, demonstrating the importance of chemistry in our everyday lives. Numerous events take place throughout Ireland in different organisations and institutions and all events can be found at www.scienceweek.ie/event_search.asp (Unfortunately the search facility nonsensical separates Dublin into Central, North, South and West instead of letting us see all Dublin events.) In Dublin alone 185 (!!) events take place. Many are targeted at Primary and Secondary students, but there are about 20 events for the rest of us and most are free. (Some require pre-booking!). A downloadable programme is not available (another missing piece!), so you have to do a bit of searching. If you use the ADVANCED search interface, you can specify audience and admission type a bit easier in your search.

It’s a neotavern with small bar counter serving cuisine in small portion behind closed door at a market in Santiago de Compostela. ‘It’s not a bar, a cafe, or even a restaurant. We prefer to define ourselves as a gastronomic space.’ say the founders of Abastos 2.0, Iago Pazos and Marcos Crequeiro. Since 2009 they run this curious gourmet establishment, based in the Abastos wholesale market in the city of Santiago de Compostela. It has a narrow bar seating only 12 people around a narrow and high table. Kevin Nolan, Coordinator to Ireland for The Planetary Society and author of the book “Mars, A Cosmic Stepping Stone”, will present these highly visual talks showing iconic and 3-D images from the no less than 8 spacecraft operating on and around the planet Mars currently and in recent times; as well as present details of the imminent Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) “Curiosity” mission, due to launch to Mars on November 25th next. MSL –Curiosity is among the most advanced space probes ever launched into space and will look for evidence of past or present life on Mars. They will also describe their adventures on several of the other water projects they have and are currently involved in; and which can be described as ‘environmental informatics’.

TENT PROTEST MOVEMENT IN ISRAEL -SEMINAR
Tues 15 Nov: 19:00-21:00 – Robert Emmet Lecture Theatre, Arts Building, TCD, Dublin 2 – Organised by the MPhil course in Race, Ethnicity and Conflict of the Department of Sociology in TCD, Eyal Clyne will talk about “The Tent Protest Movement in Israel”. It started with protests over the extremely high costs of housing (relative to the local pay) by an anonymous few who moved to live in tents in Rothschild Blvd. in centre Tel-Aviv, on July 14. Like many others, they were enraged at growing rents and the small selection of low-quality divided flats in the Tel Aviv area. Since this problem is shared by many in Israel, their protest rapidly spread, and within days hundreds of tents appeared in Tel Aviv, and all over the country. At its height, about 7% of the public took to the streets, and polls show that over 80% of the public supported the movement. It definitely was/is a popular movement which grew bottom-up, and with it, some anonymous activists became familiar faces. But with great promise came high hopes and disappointment. ESA astronaut Dr Christer Fuglesang is currently Head of Science and Application Division within the Directorate of Human Spaceflight and Exploration at ESA. Dr. Fuglesang became the first Swede in space when he launched aboard the STS-116 Space Shuttle mission on 10th December 2006. Dr Fuglesang has participated in two Space Shuttle missions and five spacewalks, and is the first person outside of the United States or Russian space programs to participate in more than three spacewalks.

“This half-day international symposium is part of SURFACE TENSION – The Future of Water, a major new exhibition at Science Gallery. The symposium will provide a platform for four diverse exhibitors on the show to talk about their work engaging with ‘the future of water’, and to allow for discussion with both the audience and key respondents. The symposium will examine water as commons; water as commodity; water use and protection as drivers of technological innovation; and water as a key focus of exciting new research across the arts and sciences.
This event brings artists, designers, technologists, scientists, humanities scholars and policy analysts together to address the future of water in a multidimensional and transdisciplinary dialogue. The event will bring different perspectives and agendas into fruitful and often provocative dialogue in an effort to promote better public and professional understandings of the role of water economies, water cultures, and water politics in human futures.”

FLOUR FOR YOUR CHRISTMAS COOKIES
Christmas is coming closer and closer and we need to start thinking about all the preparations. If you plan to bake cakes or Christmas Cookies, you most likely will use flour and by coincidence I discovered something interesting last week:
Even if baking cakes is not your normal pursuit, you probably have heard about “Self Raising Flour” and “Plain Flour”. (I only heard about Self Raising Flour when I came to Ireland, in Germany you add yeast etc or baking powder to plain flour to make it “self” raising.) The idea is that Self Raising Flour contains what ever is needed (yeast or similar) to raise the dough during the baking process while plain flour should be just that: PLAIN flour nothing else.
