Dublin Event Guide 855: We are ready for summer! – Earth Hour, lots of TCD Lectures

March 23rd, 2024

Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

We are ready for summer!

Earth Hour, lots of TCD Lectures

Hi!!

A harmless, silly St. Patrick’s Day Facebook post by me, triggered the biggest sh**tstorm the Dublin Event Guide ever experienced, but it also caused the biggest reach of a Facebook post on our page.

What happened? Check the full story at the bottom of this newsletter!

And there is a learning from this: AI still triggers totally irrational fears in people and instead of panicking or believing fear mongering, I would strongly recommend that everyone informs themselves thoroughly. I will run another one of the very successful free 2-hour training courses called “Introduction to AI and ChatGPT” and the details are also at the bottom of this newsletter.

After St. Patrick’s weekend, we should get going with the outdoor season, but it still is so cold in the evenings. Just 4 degrees last night! I am ready for summer and I am just hoping that it won’t take much longer until the temperatures rise.

There are always free events in Dublin though. No matter what season or what weather! Tell your friends and family and colleagues about all these free events. Let’s make sure that as many people as possible know in 2024 that Dublin is FULL of free events, week after week!

Donations in March:
EUR 261

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Such great support! Last week Ann helped with a donation. Thank you so much!! Your help and support is much appreciated by me and (hopefully) by all other readers of the Dublin Event Guide, because without you, the Dublin Event Guide couldn’t continue!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

Friday 29 March

Friday 29 March is the Friday before Easter and therefore is “Good Friday”. Ireland as a formerly strongly catholic country has a surprisingly distrubed relatioship with Good Friday. It is a Bank Holiday, bu tnot a Public Holiday. Nevertheless there are a good few companies that give the day off. Others force their employees to take the day off but take the day from the general holiday allocation. And for most companies it is just a day lake any other Friday.

Regarding events it is definitely not a “normal” Friday. There are a lot of less events.
For the ones that need it: Alcohol is allowed to be sold in Ireland even on Good Friday now, but this is only the case since 2022!

And there is more…

+++ The St Patrick’s Day Post that turned people to see RED

There I was, posting a harmless (I thought!) Happy St. Patrick’s Day post on Facebook last week and it turned into the biggest sh**storm the Dublin Event Guide ever saw. :-o

I was called b**tch (replace ** with it) and c***face (replace *** with unt) and even had to block a person because she got so unhinged.

What did I do? I posted a picture with my “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” that showed a scene of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Dublin. The picture was a little ridiculous, but that was not the biggest problem. The biggest problem was that the picture was created by AI (Artificial Intelligence). This little fact got about 50 people get so angry that they decided to express their anger on Facebook.

They accused me of being cheap for not paying an artist to provide a picture. And you know what? I AM cheap that way! I ask for and get donations from you, the much appreciated readers of the Dublin Event Guide and I am looking after your money well! The only cause it will be used for is to keep the Dublin Event Guide running. I will not waste it on an illustration of a Facebook post. I will get illustrations for free and use your money where it counts!

All in all there were 108 comments (not all negative) and some were VERY angry. But there were also 931 Thumbs Up and 246 Hearts, so the 108 were LOUD, but they disappear in the pool of supporters.

Interestingly the AI Art kills artists statement was a common theme (that is totally incorrect in this general way) and also a common theme was that many of the people complaining showed in their Facebook Profile that they were either artists themselves or are affiliated with art-related organisations.

Yes, AI Art will replace cheap art and bad art and some people might even lose their income. But AI will never replace (good) art. There won’t be a single art gallery or museum that will close because of AI. If I want a piece of art on my living room wall, I will buy it from an artist. But if I want a silly little illustration for a Facebook article, I have NO hesitation to use a picture that was generated for free by AI.

A handful of people thought they should “hurt” me even more and told me with glee that they have blocked the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page. THEIR loss!

But there is also a flipside to this anger on St. Patrick’s Day. Normally the weekly Dublin Event Guide post is seen by between 6000 and 15,000 people. This time – thanks to all the angry people – it was seen by 55,386 people. Wow!

What do we learn from this? If Facebook Reach is important to you. Angry readers are the best thing that could happen to you.

What else did I learn from this? I need to do more to explain to people what AI is and where the benefits and the risks are, because the emotionally charged misinformation is HUGE.

If you are interested in a free upcoming class of my “Introduction to AI and ChatGPT”, send a mail to AIClass AT inspiringleadershipacademy.com and I will tell you about the next class or alternatively sign up for information via joerg.ourpage.link/AICourse

And a final thought: When horses were replaced by cars, some blacksmiths who made horseshoes lost their jobs. That didn’t lead to the eradication of the job, but it did required some adaptability. Progress is unstoppable and like it or hate it, AI is progress. If you think your job/area will be affected remain adaptable.

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ IKEA Crafting / Music / Cooking Workshops
Ikea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well. Check them out on www.ikea.com/ie/en/stores/events/ikea-ballymun/

+++ Some more events:
Find Library events here www.dublincity.ie/events
and Trinity College Events here www.tcd.ie/news_events/events/?day=18&month=03&year=2024&search=week

+++ Storytelling and Toddler Groups at Dublin City Libraries
The Dublin City Libraries have published a list of Storytelling and Toddler groups for age 0-4 across the Dublin City Libraries. You can find it here www.dublincity.ie/library/blog/storytelling-and-toddler-groups-dublin-city-libraries

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
