Hi all!

It feels like just a couple of weeks ago, when I wrote about the New Year’s Eve Festival in the City Centre and this week I realised that 2012 is already half over. Oops! Who put me in a time machine?? ;-) Do you feel the same? When we were children it took AGES until Christmas finally came and now, 6 months are over in a heartbeat and you hardly realise. What should we take from that? I think we have to remind ourselves on a weekly basis that time is flying and that the days that are over will never come back. And then we have to make the decision to make every day count from now on. Are you prepared to do that? Live life as if there is no tomorrow and enjoy what you have and who you are with? Have a look at the Feel Good Slot if you need a little nudge! ;-)

The new Email Service Provider that I had to move to because the old one didn’t support the sending of the new formatted newsletter has some little fancy features in their system. One of them is a map that shows you where people where when they opened the Dublin Event Guide. Interestingly someone opened the newsletter in Tanzania 3 weeks ago and last week the mail was opened by someone in Mozambique! My guess is that that is someone who normally lives in Ireland and who is travelling at the moment. Or do the Tanzanians need to know where the next free event takes place in Dublin? Well, whoever it is, have a good trip! :-)
Interestingly the mail was opened in Vietnam and Japan as well. Maybe the next move: “Dublin Event Guide goes global!”?? ;-) I don’t think so, but it is fun to trawl through the list of countries.

[ad]
So, now over to the events. The week didn’t look that busy, but then I did find a few things and – annoyingly – found a few events that want to keep it a secret that they charge an admission charge. Nothing wrong with it, but at least be open and honest about it!

Finally my triplet of appeals again:
1) Your donations are still (and will always be) needed. So check out www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
2) Go to the Facebook Page and LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
3) Tell your friends, colleagues and all the worls (even people in Tanzania and Vietnam!!! ;-) ) about the Dublin Event Guide! They can subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” at the top.) The poster to hang up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc. is here www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf Thanks!

We are more than 8900 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With your help, we will make it to 10,000 in no time! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!

Today, it is just a simple page with a collection of inspirational quotations that have to do with enjoying life and making the most of it. I you only find one single quote that you like and that gives you some new perspective or reminds you of a valuable insight, it was worth checking the site out: likemylife.homestead.com/inspirationalquoteslivinglifetothefullest.html

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Anindya M and Carolyn McQ were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and help!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)

BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal/CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

A slightly odd week! Lots of events (for example a huge amount of talks in the National Gallery), but not many headline, must-go events. It is nothing new that the amount of events dips a little when the school holidays have started. For some strange reasons it seems that many event organisers think that the country is being emptied once the schools are on holidays. They don’t realise that the majority of people still works and parents with children do not stay on holidays for 3 months either.

I will have a look at the Dublin Pride Parade on Saturday and if I had children I would bring them to the National Play Day events on Saturday and/or Sunday. On Sunday the Family Fitness Day takes place in Farmleigh House, but if you are without children you can just go to the Food Market if you want. In Dun Laoghaire an “American Idependence Festival” will take place and I might go to that and will watch the Euro 2012 Final afterwards (even after Germany dropped unfortunately out). ;-)

On Monday (or Tuesday) you should consider the one-woman play Racoon, it is brilliant. On Tuesday then, you can enjoy the Green Drinks or the Alchemist Cafe. Two great talks, but they are a little niche-ey, so it might or might not be your thing.

On Wednesday “Toot, Sweet & The Shadow Man” sounds intresting. They will be in Whelan’s for a free gig and I have never heard New Orleans funk! So I would love to hear that. And “Moo” could be the entertainment on Thursday if I didn’t have to write the next Event Guide!

Enjoy the week and do something nice, especially if the weather stays as nice as it has been over the last few days.
Oh and on the way out of here, a quick and big CONGRATS! to Alicia and Hugh who said YES today in Belgium. :-)

Dublin news

Getting only 4 TV stations? Read on!

Are you getting only the four TV stations RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4? If that is the case, you need to inform yourself about the “Analogue Switch Off” because it his very likely that you receive your TV signal via an antenna and from 24 October you will NOT get any TV signal anymore unless you buy and install (It’s easy!) a Set-Top Box before that date. If you get more than these four stations already, you are most likely not affected. But think also about a second TV that you might have at home in another room. Only four (or less) stations and the TV will most likely be affected. (If you get only two or three more stations (BBC1, BBC2 and UTV), you COULD also be affected.) If you are already paying Sky or UPC for the pleasure to get lots of TV stations, you will definitely not be affected.
What is the Analogue Switch Off (or “Digital Switch Over”)? It is an essentially unnecessary modernisation of how the TV signal is delivered over the air to your TV antenna. Why “unnecessary”? Because there will be no substantial improvement for the end users. Yes, you will get a few additional channels and you pay a once-off price of EUR 60-90 (for the set-top box) for it, but if you were happy with the 4 stations all was well. The driver for the change is the technical ability to free up some frequencies when the change is complete and these frequencies can be sold to mobile phone companies. So it is really the governments in the EU that colluded on this. The change has been debated for many many years, I remember hearing about it the first time more than 20 years ago! You can’t do anything against it, so you might as well row with it. Check out the details on www.goingdigital.ie

Hugh Lane Gallery – Summer Holidays of Event Programme

The Hugh Lane Gallery regularly hosts great free events. There are the popular “Sunday at Noon” classical concerts on Sundays, then there are public lectures and there are Sunday Sketching workshops for Ages 7+. Over the summer these events are on a break or scaled down and will return in September. However, the exhibitions will continue and are always free and in addition there are now a number of Art Summer Camps for Kids (for varying fees) and the Coffee Lecture series on Wednesdays (EUR 5) will continue. If you have never been in the Hugh Lane Gallery at Parnell Square North, make sure that you add it to your own summer schedule and enjoy the exhibitions. www.hughlane.ie

Cough and Cold-related study – Parents with children Age 2-6 needed

Every now and then I get a request from an Event Guide Reader to help with a study. This is such a request and maybe YOU can help!
Do you have children that sometimes suffer with the symptoms of a cough or cold? As a parent you know it is important to take the time to learn what can be done to ease those symptoms appropriately. A new project at NUIG is hoping to establish if online education systems may be delivered effectively to help parents. Busy parents can simply log on and learn how a cold can be managed effectively. The programme layout is easy to use and does not take long for busy individuals who would like to log on and learn more about these everyday symptoms in their child.
But before something like that can be implemented/launched, some research is needed. If you are a parent with children aged 2-6 years of age, you are needed.
You will be in with the chance to win one a prize worth EUR 100 in return for your participation in this study. The programme offers parents the opportunity to access information relating to the treatment of coughs and colds in their young children. It will focus on dispelling myths relating to treatments and instruction in how to cope with a sick child. The overall aim of the session is to inform and help parents. If you would like to participate or find out more about the study, follow this link: www.nuigalway.ie/psy/sub/coughsandcolds.html/

PhotoIreland Festival 2012

I have to admit that I find it difficult to describe this festival and that I spent hours procrastinating over writing this description. PhotoIreland is a photo exhibitio, but not one, no it consists of over 100 exhibitions and events in more than 40 venues around Dublin. There are more than 200 participating photographers, curators and publishers and this is the 3rd PhotoIreland Festival. The theme this year is ‘Migrations: Diaspora & Cultural Identity’. The festival will run from 01-31 July and I expect that I will not be able to list to omany events here, there are just too many. So, instead I will send you to their website and will ask you to check it your yourself: 2012.photoireland.org

Opportunities

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

The first to mention here is the Dublin Sketchers exhibition and I have listed it in the main event section for the respective days. Check out Saturday and Sunday!

Depaul Ireland, supporting the homeless in Ireland, are exhibiting Photographic Narrative Exhibition 13.raw on the Open Programme of PhotoIreland Festival 2012. These are simple thoughts which people tend to forget, which make us happy and, which unite people from all social backgrounds. In 13.raw, these phrases are embodied by simple and realistic portraits of homeless people of various ages and backgrounds. The phrases mirror poignant stories from their lives and offer a window into their unique personalities. The project was conducted in Depaul Ireland – a cross border charity which offers people who are homeless and disadvantaged the opportunity to fulfil their potential and move forward towards an independent and positive future. www.facebook.com/13raw

Yoga in Phoenix Park

11:00 – 12:00, Sat 30 Jun

Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

varies

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Film Screening – Instituto Cervantes

18:30, Tue 03 Jul

Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place (near National Gallery), Dublin 2

“En enero, quizás” (2008) by Diogo Costa Amarante is a film about Romanian workers with residence status in Spain who were not allowed to work for two years from 2007 until 2009. This is followed by a short film called “Distancias” (2008) by Pilar Monsell, which tells the story of a group of refugees from Congo, stuck in Rabat. The Spanish borderline prevents them from entering Europe. In a remote room on the outskirts of the city they rehearse a theatre piece based on their own experiences. The films are part of the “Limits of the Frontiers”, film screening series, which is part of PhotoIreland. This year’s PhotoIreland deals with migrant movements and interculturalism. The film will be in Spanish with English subtitles. Admission is free.

Most unnecessary role in Dublin – newly elected

Price question: Who is/was Andrew Montague? I’d bet that more than 90% of you have no clue! And don’t be embarrassed about that at all! Andrew Montague was for one year the “Lord” Mayor of Dublin. And now, 4 days after his year in the job is over, I bet hardly anybody can remember his name because he had absolutely no impact. In fairness, this is not his fault. The mayor of Dublin is the most unnecessary role in Dublin because apart from opening markets, buildings and exhibitions, he has virtually nothing to do and zero influence. Andrew Montague allegedly had sometimes something positive to say about cycling in the city, but did he change anything?

On Monday a new mayor was elected for Dublin. His name is Naoise O Muiri and similar to his predecessor, he will cost Dublin nearly EUR 1 mio, will unnecessarily move for one year into Mansion House in Dawson Street, will run around with a chain around his neck to point out his “importance” and will then leave in next June having changed nothing at all and being forgotten instantly. Naoise O Muiri’s fault? Only partially. He is the one who wanted to get elected and who will pretend that he is important, but that is a harmless “fault”. The big blame is with the Irish government, who still is delaying a direct election of the mayors min Ireland. Until a Mayor for Dublin is elected by the people of Dublin and then has the responsibility to run all the affairs of the city we are far away from democracy!

It didn’t work for the German Football team last night. I was hoping that they would make it to the Final, but they just didn’t play well enough. If you are a little disappointed like me, I think we can get over our (tiny bit of) disappointment by recognising that clearly the better team won. :-) Now I am looking forward to the Final and hope that it won’t end up with penalties. Oh, and for the Event Guide it was better that Germany lost. At least I wasn’t tempted to celebrate! :-)

Have an event-ful weekend,

Take care,

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
