It was an epic weekend last week with five big events and one better than the next. I spent most of Saturday and Sunday at the Dublin City Soul Festival and with good music and super weather, the weekend was outstanding. Earlier this year I mentioned a number of times that this year will bring some big changes/great news for the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and you might have realised that I was a bit quieter about it for a while. Well, it is time to talk again! :-) But all I will say for now is this: Make sure that you DEFINITELY check out the Dublin Event Guide e-zine next week. You will not regret it! ;-)

Because of the changes (Be patient!) Bank Holiday weekends are usually not the busiest because too many people leave Dublin for event organisers to be interested in running their event at this time. But there are quite a number of events taking place.

On Saturday I plan to go to the Science Gallery because the current Science Gallery Lab “Happy” is coming to an end this weekend. Then later the Dublin Fire Brigade Parade sounds like it will be an interesting spectacle. On Sunday then the main event is the Bavaria City “Racing” event in the City Centre. I am a little hesitant about the event, but will give it a go and see how it goes.

Monday will be monopolised by the Women’s Mini Marathon, but since I am not female and am not taking part, I will give this event a miss. :-) Instead I will probably go to Bloom, the gardening festival in Phoenix Park (Sean Moncrief on Newstalk called it “Woodstock for middle class people” :-D).

During the week, check out Green Drinks on Tuesday and definitely the Dublin Shakespeare Festival, which starts on Wednesday.

BLOOM IN THE PARK
Bord Bia’s Bloom Festival is taking place from Thurs 31 May – 04 June in Phoenix Park. Bloom is Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event and last year 90,000 people visited the event. Tickets for the Festival cost from EUR 15 (when bought online) and EUR 20 when bought at the door. Bloom has something to offer for all ages. It is showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. Budding gardeners will get lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the extensive Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the “Best in Season” tent features growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Summer Kitchen will host live cooking demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much best known chefs such as Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Donal Skehan and Rozanne Stevens.

I got some tickets to run a competition two weeks ago and the only reason why I mention this event again, is because the organisers asked me to clarify that tickets at the door are not EUR 15, but EUR 20. EURO2012 SPECTACLE – THREE ON THE QUAY
The mobile phone company “Three” are the Official Supporter of the Irish Football Team and that requires that they organise good support. To do that Three has organised a big fan event at George’s Dock in the IFSC (next to the CHQ building) on the days when the Irish Team plays. The events take place on 10, 14 and 18 June, when the Irish Team plays against Croatia, Spain and Italy on the respective dates. In addition to the Big Screen for the match, a festival of fun for all of the family with a host of entertainment, food and drink concessions, penalty shoot-out games, DJ, street performers will be provided and the festival starts at 17:00. (The matches start at 19:45.) The platform in George’s Dock can only take a relatively small number of people, so you have to apply for a free ticket to the event at www.3football.ie/support-events/three-on-the-quay/

MCDONALDS WILL MOVE INTO TEMPLE BAR
Mobile Phone shops at every corner or the curse of Spar, Londis and Centras everywhere, really is not a positive impact on our streets of Dublin. Now another development will impact a whole area negatively. I think the move of McDonalds into Temple Bar is bad news for Temple Bar. The new fast food restaurant will move into what was recently Frankies Steakhouse and Bar at 42 Temple Bar Square. Pity! jrnl.ie/471385

STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – CHANGE OF DATES
Many of you have been to the Street Performance World Championship in previous years. It is a brilliant and free festival in Merrion Square where you will see the best Street Performance shows over four days. But if you expected the festival to take place again in June as in previous years (and as originally indicated after last years’ festival: 14-17 June), you will be surprised to see that the new 2012 date for the SPWC is the weekend of 19-22 July. I had reserved the originally planned date and the new date doesn’t suit me at all, but the Street Performance World Championship is a MUST GO festival, so I need to see how I can re-arrange things. www.spwc.ie

CROKE PARK SKYLINE – OPENING
The new Croke Park Skyline opened on Fri 01 June and will be added to Dublin’s tourist attractions. Croke Park is hoping to make a lot of money with it over time, but had very high upfront costs (more than 1 mio). The tour starts with a Health & Safety Briefing, then will continue with a 100 step climb up to a walk way on the 44m high roof level of Croke Park. The walk is only 600 metres long and has 5 stops at platform where the audio guide will give you more information about what you see from that location of the platform. After the tour along the walk way, you climb down again on the other side of Croke Park.
I wasn’t one of the lucky people who were invited to the press launch of the walkway, so I haven’t experienced it myself and can’t tell you if it is great or not. But many of the tourist attractions you will see in a very far distance are well or better described in the (“open-top”) tourist bus tours for which you pay around EUR 16. Alternatively you can see all the locations from the Gravity Bar on the Guinness Store House for an admission of EUR 12.96 (when booked online). The added thrill of the skyline tour is meant to be the height of the tour, but that thrill comes with a tall price tag. The 2 hour tour costs EUR 25. So for me the tour is too pricey, but maybe it will soon be offered on Groupon (or similar) and then the picture could be different. Alternatively book it for the first two weeks and get a 15% discount, but check the instructions in the News section on the website under “Special Introductory Opening Offers”. www.skylinecrokepark.ie

PASSPORT TO FAMILY LEARNING – DUBLIN SITES
For 1000 families there will be great news this summer. Eight sites in Dublin got together and developed the “Passport to Family Learning” and will make it available for free to 1000 families. When you visit one of the eight sites, you present your passport and this will allow your family either free entry or entry at a discounted rate. The participating sites are St Patrick’s Cathedral, Chester Beatty Library, National Print Museum, Rathfarnham Castle, St Audeon’s Church, Marsh’s Library, Castletown House and Dublin Castle. The passport can be used from 01 June until 01 September and you can get it at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, but you better hurry, because 1000 passports is not a lot. I think the idea behind this initiative is great, but 1000 passports seems to be a rather small number, so maybe there are some improvements possible. In addition there should be a further incentive to get all the stamps. The 1st Year Visual Arts Practice Show of the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) will take place. And it is the first show that will be in the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s (IMMA) new Galleries in the former Medical School, next to the National Concert Hall. DUBLIN FIRE BRIGADE PARADE
Sat 02 June: 18:00 – Parnell Street to Dublin Castle
The 150th Anniversary of the Dublin Fire Brigade is celebrated until Sunday and on Saturday a celebratory parade will take place. Participants will assemble at Parnell Square at 17:00 and the parade will commence at 18:00. It will go from Parnell St down O’Connell St and Dame St before arriving at Dublin Castle on Castle St. Around 1,000 international fire fighters will travel to Dublin to mark the anniversary of the country’s first fire service and the Dublin Fire Brigade has restored an old fire engine – the one which was used during Michael Collins’ funeral procession. It has also built a replica of the very first ambulance vehicle ever used.

HABITATS IN HOWTH – IRISH WILDLIFE TRUST

“Understanding Habitats in Howth” with Declan Doogue, one of the country’s leading botanists and author of “Wild Flowers of Ireland: The Habitat Guide”, will lead a walk through selected areas of Howth Head. Howth has a rich flora and a number of plant species that are not common in Ireland. The focus will be on some of the habitat types that are quite rare. However, we will also be looking at more familiar habitats like shingle ridges, coastal cliffs and the sea shore. Bring some lunch, and also sensible walking shoes, wet gear (if needed) and a magnifying glass as well as binoculars (if you have them). BAVARIA CITY RACING – CITY CENTRE

This sounds like a great spectacular and being interested in Formula 1, the Bavaria City Racing Dublin sounds like a great event for me. But then you start thinking and you realise that despite the name, there will NOT be any racing, just some show-boating. From early on I expected also that not too many drivers will come because it is just between two important Formula 1 races which take place on two different continents (Last week: Monaco. Next weekend: Canada). And it now turns out that only Jenson Button will come to Dublin. Better than nothing! But at the same time a bit disappointing. The event is free, but about 100,000 people are expected to come and if you have ever been at the St. Patrick’s Day parade you know how much you will be able to see if you are in the 5th row behind the barrier. So all this considered, suddenly the event doesn’t sound THAT cool anymore. BUT, I will still go and hope against probability that I will find this perfect spot and that all the other people will stay at home. ;-)
Instead of a City Race, there will be demonstrations of Formula 1, WRC, Superbikes, Stunt Drivers, Super Cars, Drifters.

You see that there is not much racing going on! The route of the car parades will be from North Wall Quay, to Custom House Quay over Butt Bridge and onto Burgh Quay on the South Quays. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Hurray! Another Bank Holiday Monday! :-) Make the most of it, because it is the last one until August. As far as events are concerned, the June Bank Holiday is an interesting one. Because many people leave Dublin or even leave the country for a short holiday or for going home, Event organisers shy away from running events this weekend. But there are a few things taking place and I hope you find something interesting to do. Most shops will be open and Pay&Display Parking is not enforced on a Bank Holiday.

WOMEN’S MINI MARATHON
Mon 04 June: 15:00 – South Dublin
The yearly 10km run for Women will take place on Monday, when the massive number of 40,000 women will run from Fitzwilliam Street, onto Lower Leeson Street, along Northumberland Road, passing by the RDS, Merrion Road, then turning right into Nutley Lane, at RTE turning left to run a loop to the UCD bridge and back and then through Donnybrook onto Leeson Street with the finish line at Stephen’s Green. The run is a charity run for most participants and while some participants take it very seriously, the majority has a great day out running for 10km. You can’t participate anymore, the race is full (and participation is not free anyway), but you can cheer the runners on along the route. Start time is at 15:00 and the baggage area closes at 18:00. Climate.Culture.Change is a series of provocative films and discussions which highlight the social dimension of climate change. Designed to challenge, illuminate and inspire, the series presents a panorama of interconnections from the causes of climate change to the roles of individuals and societies in addressing the issues. The films in Climate.Culture.Change are from six European countries giving an international perspective on the issues around climate change.
On Tuesday the film “People – Dreams – Actions / Menschen – Träume – Taten” by Andreas Stiglmayr (2007) will be screened. This is a documentary about a small ecovillage established in the East German countryside in the 1990s. A group of around 120 people set up Sieben Linden, an autonomous eco-settlement that satisfies all of their needs in harmony with nature. During the process they are confronted with organisational, financial and, above all, social difficulties.
The film screening is followed by a panel discussion with experts:
Michael Würfel is a Sieben Linden ecovillage resident, filmmaker and author of a new book on Sieben Linden.
Trish Kinsella is a Cloughjordan ecovillage member who has worked extensively on the ongoing design and operation of the project.
Jonathan Dawson is the author of Ecovillages – New Frontiers of Sustainability and Head of Economics at Schumacher College.

Astronomy Ireland, Dublin Institute of Technology, and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies are coming together very very early on Wednesday to watch the Transit of Venus as the Sun rises. Everybody is invited to come along at 05:00 as the Sun rises, where you can use telescopes fitted with special safety equipment under the guidance of experienced astronomers. OLYMPIC TORCH IN DUBLIN
Wed 06 June: 09:10-12:20 – throughout the centre of Dublin
On Wed Dublin will become the only country outside of Greece and the UK to host the Olympic Flame. 41 torch bearers will carry the Olympic flame through the streets of Dublin when it tours the only city outside the UK in a six hour lasting peek across the border. Even the Croke Park Skyline will be part of the route. President Higgins will greet the first torch bearer in Howth, but the relay won’t start until the convoy has reached Croke Park.
The Olympic Torch Relay will go from Croke Park down to the North Circular Road before reaching Mountjoy Square, Gardiner Street, Grenville Lane, Parnell Square East and then making its way down to The Garden of Remembrance. The onwards to O’Connell Street passing through Cathal Brugha Street and Marlborough Street before heading up Eden Quay towards Custom House and Sherriff Street.
At 10:30 the torch will pass over the Samuel Beckett Bridge past the Grand Canal Theatre and down Pearse Street. Then on to Merrion Square, Fitzwilliam Square, Leeson Street, then along the canal until Harold’s Cross Bridge, then to St Patrick’s Cathedral, Christ Church, Dame Street, College Green, Kildare Street, Merrion Street Ely Place and the whole run will end in St. Stephen’s Green. After that the torch will be driven via Sir John Rogerson’s Quay and East Wall to the M1 where the journey ends at 12:20. The “First Thursday Lecture Series” of New Acropolis, the School of Philosophy is a free lecture series and the topic of the next lecture is “Memory”. Memory is essential to life and to the inner growth of the human being. It is a source of learning enabling us to acquire new knowledge and remain flexible in our attitudes to life by integrating new experiences. The lecture will explore various types of memory so that we may gain a clearer view and a better understanding of the role of memory, how we can improve it and in doing so gain a better quality of life. THE ARTVERTISER WORKSHOP – SCIENCE GALLERY

As an artist, have you ever wanted to reclaim advertising space, replacing billboard images and marketing slogans with your own work? The Artvertiser is a software platform for doing just that; replacing billboard advertisements with artististic work that can be viewed with augmented reality apps in real time. In a free two-day workshop at Science Gallery, selected visual artists will work with The Artvertiser creators – Julian Oliver, Damian Stewart and Arturo Castro – to create a city-wide art exhibition. Participants will be invited to hack advertisement space around the city converting it into interactive, electronic artworks, disrupting the relationship between the advertiser and the viewer on the street. The Artvertiser workshop is an early element of HACK THE CITY, the Gallery’s major city-wide summer programme that will call for citizens of Dublin to join leading artists, designers and scientists to retake control of the city. This two-day workshop is free and is open to visual artists upon invitation. SERENDIPITOUS WALK – SCIENCE GALLERY

Serendipitous Walk is a guided walk around Dublin that’s all about finding new things while looking for something else entirely. It’s an iPhone app-guided experience but for two days Mark Shepherd, the artist behind the app, will be in Dublin to take people on the tour. This 45 minute walk will happen on Saturday 09 and Sunday 10 June, leaving Science Gallery each of those days at 15:00. SUNDAY TIMES OUTDOOR FILM FESTIVAL – TEMPLE BAR
The Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) in co-operation with the Sunday Times have put together a great Outdoor Film Festival on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar. It will run from 10 May until 14 June and will see a popular movie being screened every Thursday night (Gates 21:45, Film Starts: 22:15). DODGY IRELAND – UNDEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS!?
A few years ago, a friend of mine was working in Africa for a while and told me about election fraud that was happening everywhere because there was no reliable electoral role (a list with all voters) because people were registered a number of times and voters that had died were not taken off the list. And the worst was that there was no proper ID system to check if people had voted or not. Because of these problems election observers were regularly sent to that country and it was declared undemocratic.
On Thursday morning I found an article about the elections in Ireland on www.thejournal.ie. The article described that you do NOT have to bring your voters card to the polling office, that you don’t even need am ID in all cases and if you need an ID, a company ID card (which everyone with a laminator can easily fake) will do: jrnl.ie/469533 Is it just me, or does that system sound as reliable and trustworthy as the system in that African country a number of years ago!? Shocking! In the African country they then used indelible ink to make sure that nobody will vote twice. In Ireland you can still vote as often as you like if you are just ruthless enough. Incredible!
