Hi all!

This week it was like the week skipped a few days. There was Monday and then suddenly Thursday had arrived and I am writing the Dublin Event Guide again to send to you on Friday. The weeks race by and I can hardly believe that next weekend we already have St. Patrick’s Day again.
We are still performing nearly every night in the Tivoli Theatre! There will be two more nights this week (Fri and Sat) and we were able to use the Tivoli for another few nights, so we added another two shows on Thurs 15 March and Friday 16 March and I need your help for that. We had a great run over the last few weeks of the Elvis Tribute show “Return of the King” (www.facebook.com/events/302163716505338/) with Kevin Doyle as Elvis and the brilliant The Way it Was Orchestra and everybody loves the show, so we decided to give you and your friends another chance. The two additional nights are too short notice to advertise them the normal way, so we need you to tell your friends and in return we have halved the price for Thurs + Fri of next week. I mentioned a number of times that there are big news for the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” around the corner and things are definitely heating up now. I am now looking for a number of people that can help with some little bit of testing. Last weekend I went to the zoo in Dublin. I hadn’t been there for many years and have to admit that I was impressed about how much it had improved. I know some people are in general concerned about captured animals and then zoos are a problem for you, but Dublin Zoo is really trying hard to provide some small bit of real environment to the animals. Now you wonder why I tell you that in the Feel Good Slot!? Well, there is a Gorilla baby that was born in the zoo and it is sooo cute. Everybody spends extra time observing this less than 1 year old little Gorilla. Small animals make many of us smile or even feel good. THE RETURN OF THE KING – ELVIS TRIBUTE SHOW
I was able to get a number of pairs of tickets for Kevin Doyle’s fabulous “The Return of the King” Elvis Tribute show, which is running from 23 Feb – 10 March and has now been extended to by two further days on 15+16 March. CEILI – TRADITIONAL ARTS COLLECTIVE – GRAND SOCIAL
To get you in the mood for St. Patrick’s Day, the Traditional Arts Collective is running a Ceili (Irish Dancing Event) in the Grand Social near the northern end of the Ha’Penny Bridge. More than 150 people attended the last event, when top-notch Sean-nos dancers were performing on stage and MC Jerry O’Reilly taught some easy and some more complex dances. An 8-strong band with even pipes and drums played Traditional Irish jigs and reels with a contemporary feel and a number of singers performed as well. On Wed 14 March at 20:00, the next Ceili of the Traditional Arts Colelctive will take place and you can enjoy it too. Admission is EUR 8 and tickets are available at the door, but the organisers have made two pairs of tickets available for the Dublin Event Guide readers. I am a little biased about this, I admit! :-) I think it is very positive Dublin News that the tickets for the Elvis Tribute shows “The Return of the King” on Thurs 15 March and Fri 16 March are half price especially for all Dublin Event Guide Readers. Feedback like “We had such a great night at the show” or “Brilliant show!” or “Wow, Kevin Doyle and band are outstanding” combined with the fact that I am singing in the backing choir mean that I feel very strong about our show. After 13 nights, we are adding just two more before the stage will be disassembled and the Elvis suits will be packed away. AGAIN NO PATRICK’S DAY FIREWORKS IN DUBLIN
For years the fireworks at the St. Patrick’s Day Festival Weekend was the highlight of the weekend for me. It was a 15 minute fireworks that was synchronised to music played on radio, so you just had to bring a radio or listen to the radio station on your phone and you could enjoy this audio visual spectacle. But then the National Lottery became sponsors of the fireworks, called Skyfest, and despite the fact that more than a third of their customers lives in Dublin, the National Lottery made it their business to remove the fireworks from Dublin for good! The last Skyfest in Dublin took place 2006. In 2007 it had to be cancelled due to bad weather and then it was moved to the Rock of Cashel, followed by Waterford, Limerick and last year Wexford. GRAND CANAL THEATRE RENAMED … OR NOT!?
Last week I got a mail from the Press & Marketing Office of the Grand Canal Theatre that told me that from 07 March the Grand Canal Theatre is called Bord Gais Energy Theatre and that the website will become www.bordgaisenergytheatre.ie. The mail continues saying “We need to remove all references to Grand Canal Theatre from your website.” To me the name Grand Canal Theatre makes a lot more sense, as does Point Theatre and Lansdowne Road Stadium instead of “The O2” or “Aviva Stadium”…and interestingly I am not alone: The website of the Grand Canal Theatre clearly states “Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is registered as Grand Canal Theatre Company Limited”. So feel free to continue using its proper name! The name “Grand Canal Theatre” is here to stay, the name “Bord Gais Energy Theatre” is only temporary.

PADDY’S GO Free – GUINNESS STORE HOUSE
The Guiness Store House has a full programme for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend with live music from 16-18 March and lots of other events. Guinness Store House events are never free, so they can’t be included here, but St. Patrick’s Day is slightly different…as long as you are a Patrick, Patricia or another variant of the name Patrick (all valid variations are here www.guinness-storehouse.com/en/docs/name_variantions.pdf) If you are named after Patrick, then you will get in to the Guinness Store House for free on 17 March. Free WIFI FOR DUBLIN
Dublin City councillors have agreed a plan to provide free Wi-Fi in up to ten outdoor locations around Dublin. The locations are parks and open spaces and the service will be financed by pop-up ads. A tender process has to start now and if all goes to plan the WiFi network could be in operation by the summer. www.rte.ie/news/2012/0305/wifi.html If you observe how free Wifi fills venues like Starbucks with long-staying, low-consuming and seat-hogging Laptop users, you realise how many people could benefit from such a new service. But then you read on and find out that the new “service” in Dublin will most likely be limited to 1 Mbit/s (not great, but usable) and more importantly, it probably can only be used for 30 minutes per session. It is unclear what “per session” means, but it seems as if every effort is made to limit the usability of the WiFi service to tourists.

MUSICAL YOUTH FOUNDATION NEEDS YOUR UNWANTED GUITARS
Last week’s appeal once more: The Dublin City Soul Festival and the Musical Youth Foundation are directly linked and are both organised and managed by the energetic Chris Maher, who leaves no stone unturned to keep the Soul Festival going year after year. The Musical Youth Foundation is a children’s charity that has as its mission to provide every child in Ireland with access to a musical education and its many associated life changing benefits. For a very very special project that will be unveiled soon, the Musical Youth Foundation is asking you now to give them any old, unused, unloved or even broken guitars that you might have at home. I was privileged enough to be given a glimpse of what is planned and I can tell you that your guitar will definitely be put to good use. BAD ASX CAFÉ REOPENING
Last week I wrote this piece about a Café/Restaurant in Temple Bar, but when I tried to send it, it was rejected because it contained an offensive word! It is not my fault that the café uses this word that seems to offend spam filters, ;-) but in the end I had to delete the article. :-O A week later I am making another attempt. This time I am playing tricks on the Spam Filter. I will call the café “Bad Asx Café” and trust that you will be able to replace the “x” with an “s”.
The Bad Asx Café in Temple Bar, just around the corner from Temple Bar Square had years of stability followed by lots of turmoil and it now was finally re-opened. Originally it started in 1983 before Temple Bar was what it is now. 28 (!!) years later, around March 2011 it had to close. The reaction to that news was very mixed. Some thought it was time that the meanwhile deteriorated place had closed shop. Others thought the Bad Asx Café was a Dublin landmark and regretted the closure.
Interestingly, a few months later – and probably under new ownership – it re-opened and was ripped apart by an Irish Times critique in October 2011 at www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/magazine/2011/1015/1224305610752.html What happened next is not clear. Based on a Facebook Page the Bad Asx Comedy Café was opened on 18 November but last Thursday (01 March) was another re-opening of the Bad Asx Café. Was that just the official opening four month after the actual re-opening? Or had it been closed AGAIN? The Irish Times critique didn’t sound good at all, but it was written in October 2011? Was the Café open at that time if it only re-opened on 18 November? Confusion all around! And the website at www.badasXdublin.com (You have to manually replace the X with an s before that link works!) only confirms that the new design really is a rather uninspired airport-type pub look as it was suggested in the Irish Times critique.

The Dubliner’s 50th Anniversary Art Exhibition is taking place at Balla Bán Art Gallery. Ireland’s famous ballad group “The Dubliners” are immortalised by a number of Dublin artists in a new exhibition to mark their 50th Anniversary this year. Artist’s Niall O’Loughlin, Pervaneh Matthews and Ray Sherlock along with artists Mark Baker, Roy Wallace, Frank O’Dea and Tom Byrne will be showcasing paintings of the famous musicians. Drop in to have a look, the gallery is open from Tues-Sat from 11:00-17:30. www.ballaban.net

THIS OFFSET SPACE – LITTLE GREEN STREET GALLERY
10-16 March: Little Green Street Gallery, 12a Little Green Street, Dublin 7
Little Green Street Gallery is hosting an exhibition in conjunction with the (non-free) 3-day contemporary art event OFFSET 201, which takes place in the Grand Canal Theatre. Over 40 artists from Ireland and abroad will be show casing their works in the gallery, ranging from print, sculpture, textile, jewellery, photography, collage to painting and mixed media collaborations all with their own approaches to contemporary art. Opening night will be on Sat 10 March from 19:00-23:00.

NEW MUSIC MARATHON – CONTEMPORARY MUSIC CENTRE
Fri 09 March: 10:30-18:30 – DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, 163-67 Rathmines Road, Dublin 6. – The Contemporary Music Centre presents its annual student New Music Marathon in DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama
Numerous concerts of new music take place throughout the day, programmed by Glen Austin, composer and PhD candidate at DIT and Dr Kerry Houston, Head of Department of Academic Studies, DIT. A panel discussion on developing relationships between composers and performers, featuring members of the Conservatory teaching faculty and chaired by Jonathan Grimes, Information and Digital Services Manager, the Contemporary Music Centre, will take place at 14:00. The concert programmes for the day will be an eclectic mix of new instrumental, electroacoustic/acousmatic, mixed-media and live electronic pieces. The Contemporary Music Centre will document the marathon throughout the day with video coverage and a special video podcast will be on the Centre’s web site www.cmc.ie after the event. The ReMake Sustainable Design Network will be taking over Meeting House Square on Sunday to create a giant outdoor chess set made from waste materials. “Replay”, as the event is called, will challenge 30 designers to construct a giant chess set over the course of 6 hours which will then be available for public use. The workshop will take place from 10:00-16:00 and there is fee of EUR 5 for participants. From 18:00-20:00 you can enjoy the interactive exhibition and use the chess set for free.
ReMake Sustainable Design Network is a community of Irish based designers. They aim to promote sustainable design practices by working with recycled materials.

A Japanese choir will visit Ireland to perform Händel’s Messiah in the historic setting of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. The performance will take place Sunday and will mark the one-year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan. Admission to the performance is free of charge and attendees will be invited to make donations to the earthquake and tsunami relief efforts on the night.
This tour and performance are being organised by the Music and Cultural Exchange Council of Japan (MCEC International), which is dedicated to bringing Japanese music to the world stage and developing links with music and cultural organisations worldwide.

I expected that the event would definitely charge for admission and was surprised to find out that on Thursday and Friday, you can get in for free. On Saturday and Sunday, the admission charge is EUR 10, but on Thurs 15 and Fri 16 March, admission is free from 12:00-19:00. Unfortunately and somewhat oddly, the website doesn’t provide any other information. MIGRATION CHALLENGES – LECTURE . GOETHE INSTITUT

“How Migration Challenges Notions of Society, Education and Culture” is the title of a public discussion and lecture in the lecture series “EUNIC/UNIQUE Thoughts:
Public Discussions on European Issues”.
Ireland is one of just two EU countries that has a majority of migrants from the EU member states. The diversity and scale of EU migration is a recent phenomenon though there is a long tradition of migration to Ireland from some EU-15 states, especially the UK, Germany and France. Ireland has also become home to a range of people from outside the EU including Nigeria, China, India, Philippines and Brazil.
The lectures and panel discussions for each theme will assess how migrants are integrating in Irish society and in other European societies and will address the on-going impact of migration on these societies.
Over three events on 09 Feb, 15 March and 26 April this will be discussed.

“Give It A Bang” is the title of the performance and workshop in rhythm led by Brian Fleming, Solomon Ijigade and Andrew MacCarthy. Solomon is a friend of mine and he is an amazing musician and without a doubt, the other two are very good as well, so you are in for a treat if you go to this event.
This family event will begin with a performance by the trio, after which everyone will get involved in learning a song, some Irish dancing and participating in a bodhrán performance. The event will finish with a grand finale performance with the audience singing, dancing and drumming together. Admission is free.
A little odd is that this event is currently not mentioned on the website of the National Museum (www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx), instead I found it here www.dublinevents.com/events/exhibition/give-it-a-bang.php So I suggest you double-check if the event is taking place before you go to it!

PAUL PERRY – READING – IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE

CEILI – ST. PATRICK’S FESTIVAL – STEPHEN’S GREEN
Fri 16 Mar: 16:30-19:30 – St. Stephen’s Green
Put on your dancing shoes and start the St. Patrick’s Festival weekend celebrations by joining this year’s Festival Céilí. In starts too early for many who work normal hours, but because it will continue until 19:30 this year, you can catch the St. Patrick’s Festival Céilí on your way home and have a bit of fun dancing or watching others dancing jigs and reels on Dublin’s Streets. The official programme only specifies “St. Stephen’s Green” as the location, but it is not IN the park, instead it was last year near the junction of St. Stephen’s Green with Dawson Street. For years it took place on the day of the parade in the afternoon and it was a great opportunity to have some fun after the parade. I still think it would be better on the parade day, but the festival committee doesn’t seem to agree with me. Open-air performances of bands and street performers will keep the city centre busy on Friday and Saturday. I couldn’t find a schedule yet, but the description of this event says “Outdoor music performances include Daithí Ó Dronaí, a musician best known for his electronic synthesized fiddle work, the lively Mariachi San Patricio, a Mexican traditional music band, traditional Irish dancer, Mick Donegan, who will display Ireland’s rich culture of dance and Electric Céilí who blend traditional melodies with modern rhythms.” Bands will perform in Coppinger Row, South King St. and Dame Court.
And it continues “Street performances will amaze old and young alike. Be sure to catch Professor Plunger and his many hilarious gadgets and inventions. Macnas will arrive in town with a giant cockroach inventor and his troupe of scientists and engineers who are full of fun, music and mayhem. Keep an eye out for more magical characters wandering around the city.” Street performances will take place in Grafton St, South King St.

Pipeworks presents the terrifying trumpet calls of the angelic avatar from the Book of Revelation, followed by Reger’s monumental work. ART OF MUSIC – NATIONAL GALLERY

Presented by Donal Dineen, pioneering photographer and film-maker, The Art of Music is an illustrated guide to the sounds that have inspired painters, photographers and film-makers. This event will feature film & photography from Donal Dineen, live painting by Guillermo Carrion and live musical accompaniment from renowned traditional Irish fiddle player Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh and the uillean pipes player Maitiú O’Casaide. Admission is free.
Like with the National Museum event earlier, this event is currently not listed on the website of the National Gallery (www.nationalgallery.ie/whatson). Paul will join him with his unique rhythmic style of guitar accompaniment for traditional music. Tom and Sue, who have performed all over the world, will add to this lively scene with magnificent traditional Irish dance pieces.”

4 Mio GRAFTON STREET UPGRADE
On Monday it was announced that the Dublin City Councillors have agreed to upgrade the pavement on Grafton Street for a whopping 4 mio. The nice (I like it!) reddish pavement that is there at the moment will be replaced with grey granite pavement as it is use din Henry Street. The justification is that the current paving which was laid in the 1980s now has to be repaired daily. I find that odd! We are taking about bricks, right? So, either the bricks are worn out from the people walking over it or the bed underneath the bricks got damaged. I will have to look at the bricks next time I am in Grafton Street, but it sounds odd that the existing bricks need to be thrown out and a complete new pavement has to be laid. EUR 4 mio is a hell of a lot of money for a relatively short street! I have no idea how much granite stones cost, but let’s assume that full 3 mio are used up for the material, then there is still a full mio left for salaries etc. How many people could you employ for that amount? www.rte.ie/news/2012/0305/graftonstreet.html
