Hi all!

I am back in Dublin and had a great weekend in Germany. The New Wine Festival (Fest des Federweissen) was on near the place I am from and the new wine and all the food was delicious. Since we now have a quite authentic German Oktoberfest in Dublin and a Christmas Market that definitely has touches of a German Christmas Market, I wonder if in a few years time there will be a German Wine Festival here as well!? By the way, it is not all a one way street! Halloween has become really popular in Germany within the last 5 years or so and Santa Claus which was not known in the context of German Christmas is getting a foothold as well. :-)

Talking about Christmas, there are another 2 months and 4 days until Christmas and recently a Press Release reached me, claiming that “many people” have already started buying Christmas presents! It won’t surprise you that the company that allegedly did that research is depending on massive Christmas Shopping. Were they maybe influencing the results of this research a little?

This week is the final week the seven candidates for the Presidential Election will try to influence you and I am surprised how relatively open the competition still is. In my opinion the final result of this election will be totally inconsequential to Ireland, but it will still be interesting to see who will win.

Until then, we better get down to “business” and check out the free events that will take place over the next week. When the headline events are over it is sometimes difficult to get four or five top events to list them in the subject line of this mail, but it is never too difficult to find a couple of interesting events to go to.

This week I am interested in these events: Today there is a Maths Talk by Chris Budd that sounds fascinating and afterwards the Love Ceol, Hate Racism gig in Sweeney Mongrel is worth going!

On Saturday the Disability Film Festival and the Science Gallery Exhibition are very promising. Then there is the 5k Vampire Cloak Race and – with a completely different meaning for blood – the lecture about the “Secret of Blood”. I can’t decide yet what I will do. ;-) In the evening I will try to go to the Mute Fish Farewell concert. Mute Fish will take a break for a number of months and they will be missed!

On Sunday the Puppet Festival will bring some free street performances to Dun Laoghaire and Temple Bar and I haven’t been at the Dublin Flea Market for a long time, so that will be on my list this week. And in the evening I will be in Gardiner Street Church for the Gospel Mass at 19:30.

Next week, Tuesday is busy with interesting lectures: Energy Challenge, Debt Crisis or Data Protection. Take your pick! I would love to be in three places at the same time. ;-)

On Wednesday DEFINITELY have a look at the World Record attempt for rewriting the mental health story. Sounds really cool and in the evening the ever popular Brownbread Mixtape!

BEATLES SHOW “GET BACK” – TIVOLI THEATRE
On Fri 28 + Sat 29 Oct the Beatles will be in Dublin! ..and if you have doubts that it will be the real thing, then you HAVE to go to this gig. :-) Obviously it is a Beatles Tribute Band that is performing the “Get Back Show” in the Tivoli Theatre in Francis Street, but you will be so impressed and it will sound totally like the real thing. I was at the most recent concert of the same guys in the Olympia Theatre and they are really great. The concert tells the story of the Beatles in songs and the two day run in October is a preview for a longer run that will start in late January. You have the opportunity to see it first! On Saturday 29 Oct (22:00-23:30) a great event will take place in Bewley’s Theatre in Grafton Street: Julyo will perform music from his down-tempo / ambient release ‘LiMEN’ along with Italian saxophone player Antonello d’Orazio and Mauritian percussion player Khalile Vial. This event is a must for all the lovers of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ludovico Einaudi, William Orbit and Vangelis.
Normally event organisers use ticket competitions to promote their event, but this event was so popular that it is already sold out. The Musical Youth Foundation children’s charity has teamed up with best-selling author, TV and radio comedian Tony Hawks to present a very special film screening of “Round Ireland With A Fridge” in Screen 1 of Movies@Dundrum on Monday 24 Oct at 19:00. The event will be hosted by Tony Hawks who will be answering audience questions following the screening. The film is based on the true life adventures of Tony Hawks and his absurd quest to hitch round the circumference of Ireland within a month… with a fridge. The book became a top 10 Sunday Times bestseller in 1998 and has now sold well over 800,000 copies worldwide.

DIWALI DIWALI – INDIAN FESTIVAL
A big celebration of Diwali (Festival of light) will take place on 22 October in the RDS. It is a BIG Indian festival and the organisers expect over 2,500 people to celebrate it with them. Some of the spectacular events lined up for the day are: Street Performances, Taal fusion (a percussion ensemble by i4drum), Stand-up comedy by Dean Scurry, a showcase of music and visual art work with Stray Bird, a kids corner and a spectacular sky-fest to enthral you at the end of the day. CINDY BISSIG – EXCHANGE DUBLIN
18-25 Oct: 12:00-23:00 – Exchange Dublin, Exchange Street Upper, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 – “An empty Canvas, what would you draw, or write?” was the straight forward question asked by swiss artist Cindy Bissig, who left empty canvases in the Exchange to see what she would get, to find out what is going on in the minds of the people. The respond was enormous. After two weeks of cutting, glueing, mix`n maching, drawing and simply trying to get some order into the chaos, Cindy returns with a variety of paintings and drawings Various shapes and sizes. Fri 21 Oct: 18:00-20:00 – Harry Clarke Lecture Theatre, National College of Art and Design, Dublin 8. The Praxis and Pedagogy group at GradCAM and the Irish Debt Info-graphic Project (IDIP) present: “Debt or Democracy?” with David Malone (aka Golem XIV).
Author and documentary filmmaker David Malone’s BBC documentary High Anxieties – The Mathematics of Chaos (2008) was the first film to be made about the financial crisis, accurately anticipating the problems that were to unfold in the economy. In 2008 Malone began commenting on the financial pages of the Guardian’s website about the credit-crunch and the ensuing financial crisis under the pseudonym Golem XIV, the name of a military supercomputer in a novel by the same name by Polish science-fiction writer Stanislaw Lem. Malone became a fierce critic of the bank bailouts, arguing that they would lead to huge cuts in public spending. In November 2010 his book about the crisis The Debt Generation was published in the UK. Is maths a tame animal, confined to the classroom or university, or is it a wild animal, free to roam in the jungles of the worlds problems? Chris Budd talk will try to answer this question by taking maths on a tour around the zoo. You’ll discover the maths of fish, penguins and many other exotic creatures. Maths will be used to peer inside the brain of a bee and also to soar with the starlings. You’ll even see how maths can help at the gift shop and at the turnstiles to get in. There will be a great mix of maths on show, so bring your imagination! Chris Budd is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at University of Bath.

INTERNATIONAL DISABILITY FILM FESTIVAL

Abära is Ireland’s first International Disability Film Festival. The aim of the festival is to celebrate progress made by people with disabilities while increasing awareness and understanding of the many challenges still faced by people with disabilities around the world. In recent years, filmmakers globally have highlighted disability issues through documentaries, comedies, dramatic genres, music videos and animation. The films have been chosen to provoke and inspire you. (Abära means “shine” in Amharic, the main language of Ethiopia. Abära implies positive energy, optimism and forward thinking – like this festival, and the people it is about.)
Normally a film festival of this type would cost quite a bit of money if you want to see many films, but amazingly the organisers were able to keep the price to an absolute minimum, so low that I will mention them here, even if the event is not completely free: The Abära Festival Pass costs EUR 2 and allows you free admission to all festival screenings. A new exhibition has opened in the Science Gallery last night. The topic is water and the title is “Surface Tension – The Future of Water”.
“The future of water is the subject of tension. Water is both disposable and sacred, a muse for artists and a necessity for life – a source of healing and of conflict. The earth has abundant water, but only a very small proportion is available for human use. How should this be managed and sustained, and what would a water-scarce future look like?
SURFACE TENSION brings together work by artists, designers, engineers and scientists to explore the future of water, playing on its physical properties, its role in politics and economics, and ways in which it may be harnessed, cleaned, and distributed.

The Bram Stoker Dracula Halloween Horror Festival will take place in Clontarf on 22 + 28 + 30 October. REWRITE MENTAL HEALTH THINKING – GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

Help Break a Guinness World Record and at the same time Rewrite Ireland’s Story on Mental Health! On Wed 26 October, “See Change”, a partnership of 50 organisations that works to change minds about mental health problems and end stigma together with the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU), Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and Fighting Words will try to break an interesting Guinness World Record and your help is needed!
See Change will be aiming to beat the Guinness World Record for ‘Most People to Write a Story’ on-campus in Trinity College and 900 people are needed to contribute to the story. Apart from breaking the record, the purpose of the event is to raise awareness of mental health and to send the message that each of us has the power re-write the script on how mental health problems are perceived in society. Some of Ireland’s most well known contemporary Irish writers will be there as well and you can become a published author and at the same time a co-author with these well known Irish writers.
From 08:00 in the morning until 20:00 in the evening the team from See Change will be waiting for you and all you have to do is to turn up (no pre-booking required), you will then be briefed on the plot so far and contribute one line to develop the story on one giant continuous scroll of paper. To thank you, you will even get a goody bag!
The Physics Garden in TCD, where the event takes place is a square of grass located along the path between the rugby pitches and the Pavillion. There will be a big marquee so you won’t be able to miss it.
I will try to contribute to the story myself on Wednesday and you should come along too! Maybe we can not just break the record but BLAST through the barrier of 900 contributors.

DISCOVERING RELATIONSHIPS – DUBLIN CITY UNIVERSITY

This year’s SALIS Film Series features nine films (Chinese, French and German) which revolve around the topic of relationships – those towards one’s family, towards romantic partners and especially oneself. STRING MACHINE – CONCERT – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE

Co-ordinated by Eamonn Doyle & David Donohoe, String Machine is a collaborative music project which focuses on the composition, development and recording of new work. Celebrating 50 years in Ireland, the Goethe Institut in Dublin commissioned an Irish/German String Machine project. The project entailed the commissioning of new recorded works for solo stringed instruments by Donal Lunny (IRL bouzouki) and Leopold Hurt (GER Zither). These works were then used as sole source material for two recompositions by electronic artists, Eamonn Doyle/ David Donohoe (IRL) collobarating with Leopold Hurt and Stephan Mathieu (GER) with Donal Lunny.
The four new works are released on CD and form the basis for a night of collaborative improvisations between Lunny, Hurt, Mathieu and Doyle/Donohoe.

The Careers Association of Ireland hopes to raise money for people who care in the home for loved-ones who are elderly & frail, seriously ill, people with disabilities and children with special needs. MOLECULES CHANGED THE WORLD – LECTURE – RIA
Thurs 03 Nov: 18:00 – Royal Irish Academy, Academy House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2. – The Academy Discourse “Molecules that changed the world” by Professor K.C. Nicolaou will take place. This event, at which Professor Nicolaou will outline a brief history of the art and science of synthesis and its impact on society, is part of the International Year of Chemistry 2011. Professor K.C. Nicolaou is a Cypriot-American chemist known for the total synthesis of natural products.
“His research is focused on a specialized field of organic chemistry called total synthesis, which involves the creation of organic molecules from scratch in the laboratory. This process allows rare molecules found in nature to be made in great numbers for study or to serve as the basis for drugs. Or, completely new types of complex organic molecules can be made from simpler precursor molecules. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Last week before the presidential election and no “This is Odd!” about the presidential election? I know you will find that odd!! :-)
Well, there is a reason for it. I will in the next few hours post an opinion on my occasional blog at www.joergsteegmueller.com It won’t be there before late tonight, but you will find it after midnight at the latest. The reason why I am not posting it here is a) because it is too big and b) because it doesn’t really fit in this section. It is my opinion about the candidates and the process and the role of the president not JUST oddities. If you are interested, check it out later. If you are not interested that’s fine too! ;-)
