International Women’s Day, History Talks, Gigs and Workshops

Hi all!
A whole year into Covid and still no end in sight. :-O You might now say “But didn’t they say 05 April?” Yes, they mentioned that date, but just as a carrot on a stick! It is just the next check point, not the end of the restrictions. We will have to live with restrictions for another good while. After 05 April might just be a slightly softer Level 5. :-O
Working from home will consequently go on for another long time and while parents might not necessarily have THAT much more time (but hopefully still a little!), we will have to think again about what we could do productively with the additional time. For about a year ;-) I am suggesting to learn something new (maybe a hobby or a skill) and just last night I read that, according to an Accenture survey, less than 30% of Irish workers feel ‘very well’ prepared to find a new role. And 25% said they had not undertaken any skills training in the last 12 months to boost their employment opportunities. (Accenture Survey)
Interesting, right? Well, it is NEVER too late and if you are if you are part of the 25% or just then interested, I have some suggestions at the bottom of this mail!!
As a reader of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, you know that the intention of the Dublin Event Guide is to tell you about cultural events with no admission charges to “match-make” an appreciative audience with all these hard-working event organisers. The last 12 months were a little different than what I would prefer with regards to events, but culture doesn’t need to stop during a lockdown, so let’s keep going for as long as it takes until we can sit in a room again for a talk or concert or gig or anything else that is culture to you or me.

On Monday is International Women’s Day, a day that is HUGE in some countries (e.g. Poland) and gets nearly ignored in many other countries. The theme this year is “Choose to Challenge” and this refers to challenging gender bias and inequality. We still have a long way to go until true equality is reached and we all have to do our part to reach that!
Over the next few weeks, I will have to scale down the number of weekday events a little to make sure that I will get teh Dublin Event Guide to you a few hours earlier again. If there are specific events that you would like to see, let me know and I will consider it. If you don’t tell me, you just have to take what I give you. ;-) I would lvoe to include ALL events, but there are just too many and in the context of a free service, as the Dublin Event Guide is, there are just not enough hours available.
And the word “free” brings me to the Dublin Event Guide bills. Unfortunately they are not free and need to be paid. You wonder why this sad dog is here? Read on!

Last week I put the picture of the sad dog above here and was hoping that you would MAYBE have sympathy with him (and me!). But since it can’t have been him, it must have been me who didn’t do a good job! ;-) Only two donations last week is – out of thousands of Dublin Event Guide readers – not a lot and with that level of help, the Dublin Event Guide will have dificulties surviving.
If you like free cultural events and enjoy the great content in the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” help keeping it alive and donatinf a small amount. Where else can you get so much value for so little money?

ADDING SKILLS
In the introduction to this Dublin Event Guide I mentioned the Accenture Survey and the finding that many are not ready for a new job, partially because no skills training happened for the last 12 months. So in this section of the Dublin Event Guide I will suggest a few things that you can learn to enhance your skills. It is not formal courses, but will still give you additional skills.
Today I will start with Negotiation skills. If you have to negotiate anything, maybe with customers or colleagues or with a partner or even just with your kids, then yous hould definitely check out Chris Voss, who was an FBI Negotiator and knows a thing or two about negotiations. I also always recommend to check out Udemy for courses because they are very affordable and many are really good!

The Irish language festival “Seachtain na Gaeilge” will take place from 01-17 March and comes with plenty of free events. Interesting Covid-News from Germany
Antigen Tests were not allowed for home use until now. They were only allowed to be used by a qualified professional . But since a few days they now can also be sold for home use and since this morning Lidl is selling an Antigen Test for EUR 4.40 in a pack of 5. And what do you think happened? Yes, the LIdl server crashed and is still (4 hours later) not able to process any orders. (You can’t order them to be sent to Ireland, but here is the Lidl Page: www.lidl.de/de/wir-versorgen-deutschland/c30887
And when will the Irish government let us have Antigen Tests? A few weeks ago I asked in a pharmacy in churchtown if they sell them or if they could get them and the person behind the counter nehaved as if she had never heard the term “Antigen Tests”. :-O
Oh and if you are now thinking that they are not reliable (because that is what NPHET tells you, right?) Well, how about a specificity of 99.68% and a sensitivity of 96,52%!?
