Ready, Steady, Gooooo! Are we back? –
Events, suggestions and more

Hi all!

Like a little bud in early spring on a tree that looked like it had died, Monday 18 May is a glimmer of hope in many people’s mind. After more than two months of a hiatus, next Monday, there is a small promise that things will get better again and, boy, are we looking forward to it! Not a huge amount will change, it is just another small improvement. But everything counts as long as it is in the right direction!

Some shops will open (the painting of the house can finally happen ;-) ), construction sites will start again (not the most exciting aspect to the majority of us) and we are allowed to meet others again (up to 4 people, outside and a distance apart). And if you play golf or tennis or do group exercises, then there is also some good news for you.

In our social live, though, we still have to resort to mostly online events. But I’d say most of us are now streaming or Zoom call experts and some might never want to return to meeting people in real life. ;-)

I can’t wait to meet people again! How about you? What do you look forward to? Feel free to send me a mail! ;-)

Thanks so much to the people who helped last week! You will hear from me during the week, but let me assure you that you are a Dublin Event Guide Lifesaver!! :-)

If you didn’t get ’round to helping last week, you can still become a lifesaver this week! The Dublin Event Guide needs you! Please help with some virtual coffees or maybe even a 10 Euro donation via Paypal to keep this weekly newsletter going. Every cent is MUCH appreciated and the money is not going in my pocket but will be 100% invested in the the Dublin Event Guide!

You can contribute here on the “Buy Me a Coffee” site: www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG
Or even better (because I don’t have to pay any fees) you can donate directly via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide
And for the Revolut users among you, it is super easy via 0872931571.

In my blog post this week, I am writing about wrong opinions about Covid-19 that are in some people’s heads and also about official nonsense. There is so much misinformation spread, EVEN by our own government. This is just Part 1 of a number of posts. Social Distancing, Temperature checks, “finishing” the job and “how did Ireland do” are topic today: www.joergsteegmueller.com/2020/05/16/the-corona-files-covid-nonsense-part-1/

First Steps to Freedom

In previous weeks, I called this section “The Lockdown”, but it is time to change the name to reflect the renewed optimism about what is going to happen. #FingersCrossed
We are not allowed to travel yet, and the 5km distance to your exercise are is still the applicable limit. But since hardware shops are opening up and if you need to go to one, you are certainly allowed to go there no matter what distance it is!
Physical distance is still a requirement and the preference of the government would be if EVERYTHING could happen outside.

The newest recommendation is that we should wear masks in public transport and in enclosed spaces (incl. supermarkets). (Importantly, it is not mandatory, but a recommendation.) They don’t mean the N95 or FFP2 masks (the super tights ones) or the relatively useless blue Operation Theatre masks that MANY people wear, instead they are talking about what some countries call “Community Masks” and in Ireland they invented the clumsy term “Face Coverings” for it. So any cover that is in front of your face.

IF you decide to wear a mask (Remember, it is your decision!), do always cover your nose AND mouth. It is really not smart to cover the mouth only. More than 50% of people only cover the mouth. :-O And also forget the Operation Theatre masks especially when the rubber band is so loose that breathing is as easy as without a mask (this is a big giveaway and tells you the mask is not working).

Instead, make your own mask and you will do a better job than using an Operation Theatre mask. And also if you make your own like shown below, you can easily change the mask regularly and don’t have to hold on to the ONE Operation Theatre mask that you “gathered” somewhere.

You can create them really simply with a paper napkin, a stapler and two rubber bands. Cheap, easy and it doesn’t take longer than a minute!! I tried it out last week and it is REALLY easy and works well. An instruction video is here: gturl.eu/PaperMask

The Countdown has started!

Many of us have read and re-read the “Roadmap for reopening society and business” (www.gov.ie/en/news/58bc8b-taoiseach-announces-roadmap-for-reopening-society-and-business-and-u/), hoping that the more you read it, the better the news will be. But the “living document” hasn’t changed much yet, so patience is still required.

The upside of this is that you can still work on your education or whatever else you decided to pick up while in lockdown. Maybe it was knitting? Or maybe it was becoming the Netflix user with the most watched movies? Or you worked on your Yoga? Or your pushups? Whatever it is, keep going for another bit! ;-)

What can I do while being locked in?

Here are some suggestions for activities that are NOT watching TV. ;-)

1) Virtual Tour of the week
Normally virtual tours are available all the time, but this week’s virtual tour only takes place on Mondays at 10:00. It is a Virtual Tour of Dublin Zoo and you find all details here www.dublinzoo.ie/event/virtual-tour/
But if you miss that tour, then you can still see some animals – with a bit of luck. Check out three webcams in Dublin Zoo here www.dublinzoo.ie/animals/animal-webcams/

2a) Laya Healthcare Super Troopers
Laya Healthcare runs a SuperTrooper programme to encourage children and their families to live happier and more active lifestyles. There is a website at www.supertroopers.ie/ and every Tuesday and Thursday at 12:00, the Super Troopers’ Stay at Home Live Series will take place on Instagram. www.instagram.com/layahealthcare/

2b) Children’s Books Ireland Awards
The Children’s Books Ireland Awards will be announced online this year. On Tuesday 19 May at 12:00, Rick O’Shea will be on YouTube to run the event. childrensbooksireland.ie/ (Find the YouTube link at the very bottom of this page.)

3) Irish Heritage Sites to reopen again
The OPW has announced their plans for a gradual re-opening of Irish Heritage sites. The Press Release is at www.gov.ie/en/news/8b2a53-opw-announces-gradual-reopening-strategy-for-tourism-heritage-sites/ and if you want to see all sites and in what Phase they will re-open to what degree, then scroll down and check the PDF “OPW Roadmap Phases 1-5”

4) Online Courses – Lowest price
After last week’s great price of just EUR 9.99, Udemy has doubled the prices this week, so hold off buying for now. It won’t go down to 9.99 for a long time, so if you missed last week, this is bad news. But I would expect that 11.99 prices will be available soon again.
But you can check courses and put them on your wishlist: shor.by/GqCk

5) Books
Check our the app “Story Shots” for all book summaries. The basic version is free. Both are free in the basic version.
To buy your eBooks (or paper books) I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include delivery for free (and by using this link you help the Dublin Event Guide): www.bookdepository.com/?a_aid=dubevg

And my book recommendations this week are:
+ The first one is “1984” by George Orwell. For a change this recommendation NOT a non-fiction book (I prefer non-fiction as you might have guessed.) instead it is a novel about how the world will look like in 1984 and I can tell you that around 1980, people were VERY worried that it could come true. We are now 36 years away from 1984, but in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, I think EVERYONE should read this book. (www.bookdepository.com/book/9780141036144/?a_aid=dubevg)
+ The second book is following a similar theme. Aldous Huxley also looked at how a controlled society would operate in his novel “Brave New World” and we should know about his warnings! (www.bookdepository.com/book/9780099477464/?a_aid=dubevg)

6) Gospel Music and Africa Day
On 24 May is Africa Day and the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir plans a big virtual event with an African Gospel choir and range of other contributors from Ireland and African countries. It’s just one more week until Africa Day, but we need your help to spread the word about this celebration of the African continent.
And in the meantime you can join us for our Gospel Choir Mass already before that day. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass takes place at 19:30 every Sunday and will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/TheGSGC/

7) Eurovision Song Contest
The Eurovision Song Contest is not taking place this year, but for the fans of this yearly spectacle, the TV programme “Eurovision: Europe Shine A Light” will be broadcast on Saturday 16 May at 20:00.
All 41 songs that were meant to be part of the competition will be “spotlighted” and there will be some other surprise performers.

8) UCD Festival @ Home
From Thursday until Saturday (21-23 May) the UCD Festival will take place and is filled with virtual events, from workshops and expert talks to online tours, demonstrations and even performances.
Check out the website at festival.ucd.ie/ and register for some of the events.

And this is it for another week! Have a good weekend and new week. Stay sane and safe and smile, laugh and stay in contact with your friends!

Take care,

–Joerg
