Open House, Festival of History, Spirit of Dublin – Food & Drink Fair, Dublin Comic Arts Festival

Hi all!

This weekend is “Open House Dublin” weekend! Some will say “Waa??” and others will nod knowingly. ;-) It is a great event, but not everybody knows about it, so let me explain:
Open House is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and is a sort of “Culture Night” for buildings. It is a 2-day event where really interesting buildings in Dublin that are normally not accessible, open their doors for guided tours with a focus on the architecture of the building.
Why should that interest you? It is part of culture how buildings look and what purpose they have. A perfect example is Busaras, the main bus station in Dublin! A lot of people think that it is a quite ugly building, but when you hear why it was built the way it is now, you suddenly might see it in a different light and understand the reason for its look!
All guided tours are free and at the very bottom of this mail/message, I will list a number of interesting buildings that you should consider. And if you want to check the list out yourself, just go to openhousedublin.com/

The “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” always brings you a list of some of the best and most interesting free events that take place in Dublin. It is all free, but as you can imagine, to send it to 24,000 people and to create it every week and to maintain a website etc, there are some cost. The time I spend on it is free ;-) but I would very much appreciate your help with the cost and I found a free way for you to help me! Doesn’t cost you a cent, only takes 30 seconds of your time, but helps me HUGELY.

This is how the support works and it is super easy:
Just go to www.DublinEventGuide.com and click on the rectangular ad that is shown at the very top of the page! If you don’t see an ad there, please turn your Ad Blocker off and refresh the page and then do the clicking. ;-) If you click on the ad, I get between 5 and 30 cent. That is not much, but if enough people help, it will do the job to cover the cost to keep the Dublin Event Guide going. Thanks! :-) Some people have asked me for the Dublin Event Guide PayPal link for direct donations and here it is: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide

And now we come to some of this weekend’s free events. All events are sorted by start time, but watch out for the few events that have a “++” in front of them, the are particularly recommended. ;-) ALL events in this list are free, but some require booking!

…and some OPEN HOUSE suggestions as promised…

As promised in the introduction to this Dublin Event Guide, here are some suggestions for the Open House event this weekend. Some buildings required pre-booking and a few even required participation in a ticket lottery to get tickets, but there are still many many buildings where you just arrive and then wait for a bit in a queue before you get a place on a tour. Usually the waiting period is not very long.

Over the years, I have visited the Department of Foreign Affairs, Central Bank (the old one), Liberty Hall, Busaras, Conference Centre (CCD), French Ambassador’s Residence, Department of Enterprise and the Commissioners of Irish Lights offices in Dun Laoghaire and at least 5 more.
I really liked the Busaras Tour and the Irish Lights offices was also really interesting (the building is built like a Lighthouse). Not all buildings are taking part every year, but some of these are on the list again this year.

So here are a few I recommend:
+ Busáras (Sat+Sun 11:00-17:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/aras-mhic-dhiarmada/
+ Commissioners of Irish Lights (Sun 11:00-17:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/commissioners-of-irish-lights/
+ Criminal Courts of Justice (Sat 11:00-17:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/criminal-courts-of-justice/
+ Dr. Steevens’ Hospital (Sat 11:00-17:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/dr-steevens-hospital/
+ Farmleigh House (Sat+Sun 11:00-17:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/farmleigh-house/
+ Kevin Street Garda Station (Sun 14:00-17:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/kevin-street-garda-station/
+ National Concert Hall (Sat 10:00-14:30) openhousedublin.com/locations/national-concert-hall/
+ Trinity College Old Library (Sat 14:00-15:00+15:00-16:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/old-library/
+ Pigeon House Power Station (Sat 11:00-15:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/pigeon-house-power-station/
+ Residence de France (Sat 11:00-17:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/residence-de-france/
+ The Mansion House (Sat 11:00-17:00) openhousedublin.com/locations/the-mansion-house/

You will see that most more are open on Saturday than on Sunday.
There are many more interesting buildings, but if you manage to see a few of these above, you have done a great job! ;-) Here is the full list: openhousedublin.com/whats-on/
