The Green Door Market is an indoor food/Farmer’s Market that many know from when it was located at Newmarket Square. Due to the redevelopment at Newmarket Square it had to move and is now on the Old Naas Road, opposite the entrance to the Royal Liver Retail Park. At the new location they are also open on Sundays.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

The Terenure Bushy Park Market is taking place every weekk. The market has more than 30 stalls, offering a whole variety of foods and crafts.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Áras an Uachtaráin is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th ‘occasional residence’ for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and/or advance booking is not possible.

The tours will be at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00 and 15:15 and take approx. 1 hour.

The Drumcondra Village Market is now the “Art, Bites, Crafts Drumcondra Market”. And as you guessed it, it is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. :-) There will also be some food and music.

Six times this year the “People’s Art 2018″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green.

Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.

People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

A Family Day with the theme “Funky Junk City” will take place on Saturday in the Draíocht Galleries. Admission is free.

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The super popular Oktoberfest Dublin is back and will take place from Fri 14 Sept – Sat 06 Oct. If you like German Beer (Erdinger Beer), German Food (Bratwurst, Haxn (Pigs Knuckles)) and Bavarian Music (Eeek!) after 16:00, then this event is for you!

But be aware that opening times and admission charges have changed substantially again. It once was free, but now you have to pay to be allowed to go there and spend your money for beer and food. Odd, but there are still queues.

The documentary 20-S will be screened and this will be followed by a discussion wioth Liz Castro and Lynn Boylan.

The festival “New Music Dublin 2018 Defrosted” will take place in the National Concert Hall on Saturday and Sunday and part of this is “The Totally Made-Up Orchestra” and you are invited to get involved!

“All musicians of all levels and all ages are very welcome – dust off that old trombone, take your new clarinet out for a practice run and grab some cowbells, we’re putting together an orchestra.”

Rehearsal of our totally made up piece will run from 14:00 with a 30 min performance at 17:00. Conducted and devised by the experienced and fun Belfastian composer Brian Irvine, this will be an enjoyable, stimulating and unexpectedly creative afternoon for all the family.

“Animal Senses” is a morning of games to test our senses and see how we compare to the animal kingdom. Can we track using our nose, hear a predator coming or use echo-location to find our way? Suitable for kids aged 5 to 10.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The super popular Oktoberfest Dublin is back and will take place from Fri 14 Sept – Sat 06 Oct. If you like German Beer (Erdinger Beer), German Food (Bratwurst, Haxn (Pigs Knuckles)) and Bavarian Music (Eeek!) after 16:00, then this event is for you!

But be aware that opening times and admission charges have changed substantially again. It once was free, but now you have to pay to be allowed to go there and spend your money for beer and food. Odd, but there are still queues.

So here are the (weirdly complicated) new opening times and rules:
Free Admission: Tues+Wed: 12:00-23:30, Thurs: 12:00-20:00, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:00, Sun 12:30-16:00+17:00-22:30
NOT free: Thurs: 20:00-23:30 (EUR 8), Fri-Sat: 17:00-23:30 (EUR 12 with EUR 5 meal voucher)
Mondays the Oktoberfest is closed and Fri-Sun the fest is closed from 16:00-17:00

So the best advise is to go on Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday.

A Céilí Mór (Irish Dancing) will take place on the green area to the rear of Marlay House and is a free fun day out for all ages featuring Irish dancing and music. The Dublin City Folk will play the music and you will have a chance to learn some new dance skills. Face painters will also be there to add some glitter and sparkle.

The weekly Marlay Park Market will also happen in the park.

Entry to the event is free but parking is very limited so we recommend you walk or use public transport.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Families are invited to explore and respond together the gallery’s collection and temporary exhibitions through discussion and drawing. Bring your own sketchbook along or use the drawing materials provided.

Admission is free and no booking required, although numbers may be limited. Suited for ages 6+.

You can Tour the Garda Station, have a look at the Garda cars and the Dublin Fire Brigade will also show some of their equipment and have fire fighters present.

Every Sunday a free guided tour will take place in the Chester Betty Library. The tour starts at 15:00.

In addition there is another free tour every Wednesday at 13:00 and one on Saturdays at 14:00

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The talk “Painting before and after Impressionism” with Dr Tim Stott, lecturer in art history and visual culture in DIT, will look at painting before and after Impressionism.

There is a good chance that this event will happen again on Sunday from around 16:00, but at the time of writing this, it was not yet announced, so check the website closer to the day:

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.

The Dublin Festival of History runs from 24 September until 07 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 140 events and all are free.

“The Gate Lodges of the Phoenix Park” is this week’s Wednesday walk in Phoenix Park.

It is a walk to the gate lodges of the Phoenix Park capturing the architecture and history of some of these unique lodges some of which were designed by Decimus Burton, Francis Johnson and Jacob Owen.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

The super popular Oktoberfest Dublin is back and will take place from Fri 14 Sept – Sat 06 Oct. If you like German Beer (Erdinger Beer), German Food (Bratwurst, Haxn (Pigs Knuckles)) and Bavarian Music (Eeek!) after 16:00, then this event is for you!

But be aware that opening times and admission charges have changed substantially again. It once was free, but now you have to pay to be allowed to go there and spend your money for beer and food. Odd, but there are still queues.

So here are the (weirdly complicated) new opening times and rules:
Free Admission: Tues+Wed: 12:00-23:30, Thurs: 12:00-20:00, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:00, Sun 12:30-16:00+17:00-22:30

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The Pop-up sketching session inspired by Paul Signac’s “The Terrace, Saint-Tropez” will take place in front of the painting in Room 4. In this session you will work with oil pastels on paper. All materials are provided.

A free guided tour will take place at the National War Memorial at Islandbridge every Wednesday at 14:00 from March until the end of October.

The tour will focus on World War I, in which nearly 50,000 Irish soldiers died. You will also hear about the main features of the gardens at this tour.

William Butler Yeats was repatriated to Ireland in September 1948, through the good offices of Minister of External Affairs, Sean MacBride, together with President Sean O’Kelly. However they did not look kindly on a repatriation for James Joyce. Why not?

Anthony J. Jordan is a prolific biographer. His most recent book is ‘James Joyce Unplugged’. He recently donated his extensive Archive to the National Library of Ireland.

“Thriving at the Limits: Risks and Rewards at the Edges of Life” is a talk by author and psychologist Emma Barrett. She considers what it takes to survive and thrive in remote and dangerous environments. Extreme activities such as polar exploration, deep-sea diving, mountaineering, space missions and long-distance sailing create extraordinary physical and psychological demands. Dealing with fear is only the start. People in extremes may endure days or weeks of punishing hardships like sleep deprivation, pain, hunger, exhaustion and monotony. Does it take superhuman abilities to overcome these hazards? Or do we all have the potential to thrive in extremes?

On National Fitness Day and during the Dublin Sportsfest Week, the Docklands Fitfest will take place. It is a day full of free classes in a big Marquee on Grand Canal Square.

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.

Every Thursday a free tour of Grangegorman Military Cemetery on Blackhorse Avenue takes place. Meet inside the cemetery gates.

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery’s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.

Michael Grant will discuss the life and career of the great Swedish Dramatic Soprano, Birgit Nilsson (1918 – 2015). Birgit Nilsson was blessed with musicality, technique and imagination and 2018 marks the centenary of her birth.

The talk “A Closer Look at Samaritan Binding Practices” will describe the various binding and manuscript making practices used by the Samaritans and will be unveiling previously little documented binding structures. Julia Poirier has joined the Chester Beatty in 2012 as the Heritage Council of Ireland intern and has since been working as a book and paper conservator at the museum.

“Thursday Lates” are a series of events in the National Gallery after hours. This week the Thursday Late celebrates the new exhibition “Curious Creatures: Frans Post & Brazil” with a focus on Brazilian-themed activities.

Experience a percussive samba performance by Morro 16, or discover your hidden talent for capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial art) in workshops led by Mundo Capoeira. Brazilian tunes will be played by DJ Pablo Santos and Tropical Popical will create Curious Creatures-inspired nail art (booking opens 14:00 on 24 Sept.). Brazilian-inspired food and drink will be available, including a speciality cachaca cocktail.

Guided tours will take place at 17:30 and 18:30 and the galleries will stay upen until 20:30.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

Disordered Minds: How Dangerous Personalities Are Destroying Democracy

Irish author and scientist Ian Hughes will talk about his book “Disordered Minds: How Dangerous Personalities Are Destroying Democracy”. By bringing together his experience in science, psychology and political science, he will answer questions about why a small proportion of people with dangerous personality disorders are responsible for much of the violence and greed that scars our world. Clinical psychologist Paul D’Alton will introduce Ian. Paul is head of the Department of Psycho-oncology at St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin and Adjunct Lecturer at The School of Psychology, University College Dublin.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

The Dublin Sportsfest 2018 is the first ever week-long Sportsfest in Dublin. It will run from 23-30 Sept and will give you a chance to try out lots of different physical activities. Most events are free and the full list is on the website below.

“Reframing ’68 and the Sixties” is a Symposium on Friday (after a documentary screening on Wednesday and panel discussion on Thursday). IT will bring together leading scholars to reinterpret the significance of the events of 1968.

The Disabled Drivers Motorshow & Conference will take place on Friday and Saturday 28+29 Sept in the RDS.

The event provides the perfect opportunity to discover everything you need to know about motoring with limited mobility. There will be wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs), the latest adaptations and associated products and services available for people with limited mobility.

The conference will cover key topics, for example recent changes to the Disabled Drivers and Passengers Tax Relief Scheme, Changes to the Fuel Grant Scheme, Vehicle Finance and Adaptations available.

Admission is free to the event.

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.

Talent Garden is a innovation platform and coworking network for digital innovation in 8 European countries and they just opened their campus in Dublin in DCU in Glasnevin. Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

The Dublin Festival of History runs from 24 September until 07 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 140 events and all are free.

The next Culture Club in Collins Barracks returns to the Proclaiming a Republic exhibition and this time in the company of curator Sandra Heise to hear the fascinating story of ‘Leabhar na hAiséirghe’, ‘Book of the Resurrection’, which was created by the artist Art Ó Murnaghan between 1924 and 1952.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

Admission to the gallery and to most events is free.

The super popular Oktoberfest Dublin is back and will take place from Fri 14 Sept – Sat 06 Oct. If you like German Beer (Erdinger Beer), German Food (Bratwurst, Haxn (Pigs Knuckles)) and Bavarian Music (Eeek!) after 16:00, then this event is for you!

But be aware that opening times and admission charges have changed substantially again. It once was free, but now you have to pay to be allowed to go there and spend your money for beer and food. Odd, but there are still queues.

So here are the (weirdly complicated) new opening times and rules:
Free Admission: Tues+Wed: 12:00-23:30, Thurs: 12:00-20:00, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:00, Sun 12:30-16:00+17:00-22:30

Mondays the Oktoberfest is closed and Fri-Sun the fest is closed from 16:00-17:00

So the best advise is to go on Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday.

The Cemetery at Arbour Hill is the last resting place of 14 of the leaders of the 1916 Rising. Among those buried there are Pádraig Pearse, James Connolly and Thomas Clarke. This tour every Friday introduce the Cemetery and will also explain the background and the event of the Easter Rising.

Admission is free and no booking necessary. The meeting point is inside the cemetery gates.

At “PROBE: Research Uncovered at Trinity College Dublin” visitors will get an up-close look at the fascinating work being carried out by Irish researchers and how it’s helping to solve some of society’s biggest problems.

In TCD’s Front Square, the diverse world of academic research will be presented with live experiments, exclusive performances, interactive workshops, stand-up comedy and storytelling sessions.

PROBE, is a collaboration between Trinity College Dublin and Science Gallery Dublin and takes place on European Researchers’ Night.

The TramCafe is the venue for Dublin’s only after work Jazz event on a Friday. Lulu Kumama will perform Jazz & Soul Standards wth a Funky Twist.

The Music Room of Christ Church Cathedral is the venue for three talks organised by the Geological Survey Ireland on European Researchers’ Night. The topic is “Volcanoes and Tsunamis in Ireland”.

Cornucopia Café & Restaurant host live music three evenings a week (Thurs, Fri and Sat). The restaurant is a Wholefood & Vegetarian Restaurant and is open until 22:15.
