Hi all!

Another great milestone! Our Facebook Community has now reached the nice number of 65,000 and keeps growing. If you haven’t seen the daily Facebook message for a while, come over to the page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and say Hi! :-)

This will be a busy weekend with a wide range of events. Unfortunately the rain will be back with us at least on Saturday and Sunday, if you believe the forecasts. So the last weekend was – at least for now – a big exception, But remember that summer has not yet started. Phew!! ;-)

Again I will have to send this Dublin Event Guide it in two stages. This is the FINAL version of this week’s edition. More than 35 additional events are added since the preliminary version. Uff!!

An update on the bills: A good step was made in the right direction. EUR 95 came together now since the beginning of the month. But that still leaves another EUR 95 and there is only really one week left. Can you help here?

[ad]

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote from author Melissa Stewart. She said

Did you make someone smile today? You’ve still got time.

A great goal for every day! If all had that goal, the world would be a better place! But we can at least make our own small world a smilier world!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Malachy B, Lorraine C, Stuart N, BCS and Filippo G were the wonderful people who supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

There is lots happening this week: I will go to the Dockland’s Summer Festival (Saturday+Sunday) and also like the sound of How? in Shanganah Park on Sunday. If you are interested in drawing then the National Drawing Day has to feature on your To Do list for Saturday.

On Sunday, check out the Moveable Feast in Merrion Square, especially if you have dance-mad kids. And there will be a Family Market in the Food Co-op!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

High Density Cycle Parking for Dublin – BREAKING NEWS

It has emerged that Dublin City Council is in the process of or just has finalised a contract for the installation of High Density Cycle Parking in the City Centre at 10 locations. It seems that so called “Sheffield Stands” will be installed, which is a tubular stands that describes an upside down “U”. A picture is here.

The stands will be installed at each end of Capel Street, in Cathedral Street, Swift Row, Bridge Road, Luke Street, Francis Street, Exchange Street, Charlemont Street and Clanbrasil Street.

More cycling parking is definitely needed and appreciated in Dublin and the Sheffield Stands allow the securing of the bike at two points instead of just one, but it remains to be seen if two locks will really be enough to have a significant impact on the outrageous amount of bike theft in Dublin.

Identical stands are already at a number of locations throughout Dublin, for example College Green, Exchequer Street, Cecilia Street, Fitzwilliam Street Lower, etc).

By the way, this is NOT additional Dublin Bikes stations, but the new cycle parking is for your own private bike.

A really interesting study about Cycle Parking in Dublin can be downloaded here (in PDF format), however, it doesn’t seem to the basis for the chosen ten locations.

LAST WEEK: Spring Into Heritage – Events Programme – Dun Laoghaire Rathdown

The last week of this great (and very popular) programme has started:

The “Spring into Heritage 2016” programme, is a series of free guided tours over the next 10 weeks from 21 March until 29 May in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. It is a great programme that gives you a chance to learn more about the history of this part of greater Dublin. The National Maritime Museum, the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre and a 1916 Graves tour in Deansgrange Cemetery were added new this year and there are also tours of the Oratory on Library Road in Dun Laoghaire, Cabinteely House and Marlay House.

If you are interested in history/heritage, check it out! A brochure with the tours can be downloaded here.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Leonardo da Vinci – Ten Drawings from the Royal Collection

06 May – 17 July

National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2

The National Gallery will exhibit ten of the finest drawings by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). They are on loan from the Royal Collection and will be on show for 2.5 months.

Admission to the exhibition is free, but pre-booking is required. A timed ticketing system will be in operation.

You will get to the booking sites via www.nationalgallery.ie/Exhibitions/Leonardo.aspx

In Sight – Dublin through the lens of homeless people

until 29 May

Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, South William Street, Dublin 2

This is a very interesting exhibition. Lynsey Browne and Lucy Ryan gave 45 homeless people a disposable camera and invited them to use them to record scenes from their life. 30 cameras were returned and only 15 photographers came a second time to provide captions for the images.

Some of the pictures are shown at an exhibition in the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. All pictures are on sale.

Some more information about the project is in an Irish Times article here. The In Sight project website is here: www.theinsightproject.ie/

Kildare to create ‘little prints’ on ‘little known events or incidents’ during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident/artefact of their choice. FIELD TEST – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 21 May

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Seventeen-year-old Jessica Taylor not only witnessed the 1916 Easter Rising, but wrote a daily account of what she saw and heard in her diary.
Former Clann na Gael Girl Scout Mary McLoughlin later related her experiences as a fifteen-year-old courier during the rebellion in a witness statement collected by James Connolly’s daughter Ina.
Cork schoolgirl Mary Dalton reflected on the events of the War of Independence and the subsequent split over the Anglo-Irish Treaty through poetry. All three provide a girl’s eye view of the revolution.

In Italy a wild party would continue for days. The game itself attracted a record TV audience, never equalled before or since. Italy was united in sporting triumph.

“How should we understand the difference that arts and culture makes to individuals and to society? The case is too often presented in terms of benefits that are thought to be important to the government of the day while neglecting some of the more fundamental benefits that matter to us all. Do we need to think again about how we discuss these issues, not make claims that cannot be easily substantiated, and also show that the arts and humanities methods have a good deal to offer as we seek evidence for the difference that arts and culture makes.”

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Food Fads or Food Trends or just unexplainable crazes?

A “fad” is “an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived”. A “trend” is a “general direction in which something is developing or changing” and a “craze” is quite similar to a “fad”, but craze has also a level of insanity or out of control-ness to it.

I would call the food fads in Dublin “crazes” and definitely not trends, but what am I talking about?

Well it is the appearance of a “new” food that everyone raves about, which then leads to the sudden opening of a mad amount of restaurants and eateries, followed by a short period of “being everyhwere” and then the similarly sudden disappearance of nearly all of these eateries again.

A good few years ago it was ….. Sushi! It started with one or two restaurants and suddenly lots of places appeared like mushrooms over night. Some restaurants are still there today, but many are long gone. After Sushi followed Burritos. From one day to another, every corner of Dublin had a burrito take away. Interestingly a surprisingly large amount of them are still there. But are people still mad about Burritos? I haven’t heard anybody talking about them. Maybe they just became normal food like many many decades ago the Fish & Chips.

The next food craze was Milkshakes! At one point there were at least 5 or 6 milk shake places in the City Centre. One of them even got money on Dragon’s Den. I loved the Oreo milkshakes and Nutella milkshakes etc. Today? Not a single one of the five places is still open. For milk shake enthusiasts there is however still Eddie Rockets where in some restaurants a dedicated milk shake bar has been added (for example in Stillorgan).

After the milkshakes came the “shredded pork”. I know, it is still around, but, boy, was that a craze at some point. And for “meat for people with no teeth” it is a surprising craze. In other words, it is not that amazing!! But for some reason you HAD to have it.

And the newest madness? That seems to be doughnuts! Not the ones for 5 for 1 Euro that you get in Tescos. Oh no! They have to be different and special doughnuts. For example with crunchy bits on the outside, called Cronuts. Or with different flavours, not just the “cheap old” raspberry jam, no the fancy models come with icing and cherries on top, or with banoffee or with a salted caramel flavour or crispy cream. And one other important feature must be present: The doughnuts have to be totally overpriced!! Only if you pay a crazy price is is really happening! ;-)

This weekend even sees a Doughnut Festival in Camden Street!!! :-O

What will follow? A total wipeout and a new craze! Definitely! Mad people these Dubliners! ;-)

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg
