Hi all!

A nice round number again: This is the 460th Dublin Event Guide and it will come as a big surprise for some of you that it is sooo early! Well, I will be away over the weekend, so I had to re-schedule my whole week to get it out before my flight goes. In 460 weeks I haven’t missed a single one, so it is a challenge to keep that up! :-)

[ad]

I hope it helps that you are getting this edition early, but unfortunately I can’t promise that next week will be early again. In face due to the few days away, I will be well behind when I come back.

Thanks to the two supporters who helped with a donation. Another EUR 70 for this month and I will stop nagging you until the beginning of May! Tempting isn’t it? ;-)

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 64,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote again. this time by Thomas Fuller (1608-1661). He said

All things are difficult before they are easy.

Thomas Fuller lived more than 350 years ago and still NOTHING has changed! His quote from back then is STILL as valid and as correct as it was when he lived. What can we learn from that? Well, it won’t change in our lifetime either, so we better accept it and work hard through the difficult time to reach the easy phase soon, because that is where the reward is!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Ciara M and John L were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week will be away, but that won’t stop me from picking some great events for you if you are interested in my suggestions!

I would definitely go to the Fire Show at TCD on Friday, to the brand new “Fabulous Market” in the George on Saturday and the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market on Sunday. I really like the Fusion Sunday market.

On Wednesday Händel’s Messiah (or parts of it) will be performed in Fishamble Street where in 1742 it was performed for the first time. If you have time and are in the area, go to it, it is always fun especially the last bit of the singing when crowd participation is invited. ;-)

I also want to draw your attention to another event that will take place next week! On 16 April he Summer Camp Fair by Kidsguide.ie will take place at the Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaire. It starts already at 10:30 and you know how late I am sometimes, so check the banner just below here and in the UPCOMING EVENTS section is a little more detail included. Put it on your plan if you have children to entertain this coming summer!

The Kidsguide Summer Camp Fair will be in Dun Laoghaire on 16 April! Don’t miss it if you have kids to entertain this summer.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

MusicTown – Festival

Every April, the anniversary of the debut performance of Händel’s Messiah takes place and because of that, Ray Yeates (Dublin City Arts Officer) had the idea a few years ago to run a city wide music festival in April. The idea is good, but I am not sure if the festival, which is called “MusicTown” really became as coherent as it was intended.

It only happens the second year as a full festival and you will find all details and events on www.musictown.ie There are plenty of events. Some are free and many are not, but even the non-free event are very low priced (often EUR 5).

As you know, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) only lists free events, so I can’t include the many low priced events, but the free ones are included. The festival will run from 06-17 April.

Spring Into Heritage – Events Programme – Dun Laoghaire Rathdown

The “Spring into Heritage 2016” programme, is a series of free guided tours over the next 10 weeks from 21 March until 29 May in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. It is a great programme that gives you a chance to learn more about the history of this part of greater Dublin. The National Maritime Museum, the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre and a 1916 Graves tour in Deansgrange Cemetery were added new this year and there are also tours of the Oratory on Library Road in Dun Laoghaire, Cabinteely House and Marlay House.

If you are interested in history/heritage, check it out! A brochure with the tours can be downloaded here.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Reflecting 1916

Sat 19 March – Sun 01 May

Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

Reflecting 1916 features photographs that were taken by eyewitnesses in 1916. Some of them were never shown in public before.

The exhibition shows pictures of the destruction of Dublin, of the widows and orphans of the Rising and how the Rising has been represented in subsequent commemorations.

Admission is free. Opening hours are Sun+Mon 13:00-18:00, Tues-Sat 11:00-18:00.

1916 Sackville Street: Remembering 262 Civilians Through Art

Fri 08 – Sun 24 April

National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9

There were more civilians killed in the 1916 Easter Rising than Irish Volunteers or British soldiers. Of the 485 people who died, 262 were civilians. These men, women and children have no memorial and lie in graves, some forgotten.

The objective of the 1916 Sackville Street Art Project is to hold an exhibition to commemorate the lives of these ordinary civilians that were killed in the 1916 Easter Rising. Schools, educational groups, youth groups and individuals were invited to create a 3D house from any art form to represent a civilian that was killed during the 1916 Rising, and where possible, to provide a brief historical profile of that civilian and/or the art project.

The response was overwhelming and resulted in this unique exhibition. The initiative was started by ceramic artist Ciara O’Keefe. www.1916sackvillestreet.com

Glass House – Sound Installation

06-17 April (10:00-22:00)

Smithfield Square, Dublin 7

Glass House is a Sound Installation that responds to the Lighthouse Cinema Film Schedule and is by artist Sven Anderson.

It responds to films being screened in the Light House Cinema by amplifying subtle traces of their soundtracks outside of the cinema on Smithfield Square.

The sound emerges from two of the lighting braziers that tower over the square (located in front of the entrance to the cinema). The title of the piece goes back tp John Cage’s analogy of experimental music and glass architecture, where one does not see the surface (or hear the music) but instead somehow looks (or listens) through it.

23 March – 29 April (Mon-Sun 10:00-16:30)

In Sven Anderson’s workshop, you will interact with radios and transmitters located around the gallery, to create and overlap live recordings with radio station transmissions and static. How can we become more aware of the sounds in our environment? What happens when other sounds, such as radio or static, interfere with that soundscape? And how can we manipulate or adjust the sounds around us?

FIELD TEST – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 09 Apr

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

FIELD TEST – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 10 Apr

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Arrive early to avoid disappointment?

Every week, I am checking about 400 events to find the 180-220 free events that then make it into the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Where an organiser sells tickets, they know how many tickets they can sell and they stop when the event is sold out.

For organisers of free events, things are a lot more tricky! You have NO idea how many people will come to your event. It could result in an empty room or you could have so many people that you have to send some away. Neither of the two scenarios is ideal, BUT most event organisers understandably rather have a full room than an empty room. When they expect or hope for a busy/full event, they often write “No booking required, however places are limited, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.” or “Places are limited and early arrival is strongly recommended.” or something similar.

Sure we get that if you are there before everyone else, you will get a seat while late comers might be sent away, but if you suggest to EVERYONE to come early, would that not just create the exactly same situation as if everyone came on time or came late?

So in my opinion it is a silly and nonsensical statement. Yes, it should be stated that places are limited because then you know that you might be sent away if the venue is full, but the “come early to avoid disappointment” is totally unnecessary. By the way, you will have never read this unnecessary statement in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). ;-) I apply a nonsense filter before I include any information. :-P

If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
