From Tuesday until Thursday I was at my first and last Web Summit. It is a very interesting event, both in the GOOD and in the BAD meaning of “interesting” and the controversy around its departure from Dublin to Lisbon from next year is also “interesting”. Both sides seemed to have screwed up badly, but after having experienced it, I would say that the RDS is really not a good venue for an event like that and since we have no other big venue, the organisers’ plans and the infrastructure available in Dublin are just not compatible anymore. I also think that the event is much too big and the plans to grow it by another 20,000 people is – in my eyes – absolute madness, but it probably makes much too much money for a “repair” of the problems to get considered.
This coming weekend I will be in the UK for a few days and somehow this Dublin Event Guide had to be created in between. Challenging to say the least! ;-)
And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with and one I mentioned already: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

An evening with Packie Bonner – Ticket Competition

In a successful 17-year senior football playing career, Packie Bonner made 641 appearances for Celtic, winning 4 Scottish League titles, 3 Scottish Cups and a League Cup between 1978 and 1995. He also played 80 times for the Republic of Ireland, was in two World Cup tournaments and one European Championship and he was the penalty-stopping goal keeper in the shootout at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, when Ireland made it through to the quarter final.
Since retiring from playing, he has diversified into public speaking, media commentary and presentation as well as continuing to work as a representative of UEFA.
Now Packie Bonner has told his story in “The Last Line” and to present his book and talk about his life and career, he is inviting to “An evening with Packie Bonner hosted by Gerard McDade”.

Strolling through Ulysses – Winner

Robert Grogan has written a one-man show entitled “Strolling Through Ulysses!” in which he tells the story of “Ulysses” and enacts some of the dialogue and narration in the book. The show is aimed at people who have never read “Ulysses” and the events and characters are highlighted in a light-hearted way while at all times keeping loyal to the text and respecting the authenticity of the novel. The show is amusing and entertaining and emphasises the humorous nature of “Ulysses” without compromising the extraordinary novel.
Robert will perform his 70 minute show in the International Bar from Monday until Sunday. Tickets are EUR 10 and can be bought at the Sound Cellar on Nassau Street or online at Ticketmaster or you can also just pay at the door if there is still room.

Mad Bank of Ireland Cash rules
There was a time when a bank was the institute that looked after your money and your bank “manager” was there to help you. Now they don’t want to have anything to do with real money anymore and want to run everything cashless and person-less.
Bank of Ireland have – in their wisdom – decided that the rules for “Over the Counter” cash transactions will be changed to make it nearly impossible for normal people to ever use the services of a bank employee when withdrawing or lodging money anymore and even the handing in of cheques to a person is now severely limited:
You are only allowed to withdraw money at the counter if you withdraw more than EUR 700, a lodgement has to be for more than EUR 3000 and a cheque lodgement over the counter has to be for a minimum of 15 cheques.
When these new rules were revealed there was an outcry and the Bank of Ireland was heavily criticised. So a little while later they “gave in” as you can read here but the only change is that “vulnerable” people (old people and people that are unfamiliar with technology) will continue to be served at the counter. For younger aged people now exceptions are made.
It is obviously still possible to lodge and withdraw money for lower amounts, but only at ATMs.
If you are unhappy about this further reduction of customer service, think about a bank change, Unfortunately there is a high likelihood that some other banks will follow Bank of Ireland’s “lead”. But you should regularly check other banks out and move if another one offers better conditions.

Screen Cinema to close
It emerged on Friday that the Screen Cinema between Liffey and TCD is closing in 2 weeks or less. Many people expressed their regret that the cinemal will close, but even more people said that they had stopped going to this cinema, so it seems that it was unavoidable. If the customers stay away en masse, no business can survive.

Watch out: Hoverboards / E-Boards rip off
This is just a warning because I came across some questionable sellers:
If you are a parent and are pestered by your children to buy them a Hoverboard / E-Board, which is a self-balancing electric two-wheeler (see picture here), for Christmas, watch out and don’t fall for the rip-off traders!
During the week a company sold these vehicles outside the Web Summit for the crazy price of more than EUR 700 and I strongly recommend that you stay away from anyone charging that much. They are available for approx. EUR 350-450 in Ireland and anything above EUR 500 is excessive.
I know, in the USA some companies sell the same Chinese imports for above $1000, but you are a fool if you fall for it.

Art 5 Refugees – Exhibition and Auction

An exhibition and auction of artwork in aid of the refugee crisis takes place next weekend. The artworks were donated by the artists and will all be auctioned after an exhibition.
Opening night and Raffle is on Thurs 05 November at 19:00
The exhibtiion is open on Friday 06 & Saturday 07 November from 10:00-20:00
And on Sunday 08 Nov from 13:00 – 17:00 the auction will take place.
All proceeds will to to Global Giving’s Syrian refugee crisis fund.

From the “Votes of Women” campaigns of the early twentieth century to the recent occupy movements, political activists around the world have used posters to mobilise, educate and organise. The exhibition contains seventy posters drawn from the Victoria and Albert Museum collection and will feature a diverse array of artists, graphic designers and print collectives.

The artwork was produced by artist Marie Brett and musician Kevin O’Shanahan following a collaboration with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, informed by the concept of absence and presence and how ambiguous loss theory relates to an experience of dementia.

Design It – Exhibition

“Design it” is an exhibition exploring design in a child’s world and it is part of Irish Design 2015.
The exhibition and a range of (non-free) events will introduce children to the process of design, illustrating how designers take an idea and then make it a reality.
The Ark have challenged five Irish designers to create new products for children, taking inspiration from iconic children’s toys, furniture and textiles.The Design It exhibition recreates each designer’s individual studio giving us a glimpse at their working practices, using their sketches, photographs and working prototypes, to reveal how they get from an initial idea to the final product.
Admission is free and no booking is required.
The exhibition will be open every Saturday from 7 Nov – 16 Jan (closed Sat 26 Dec) from 10:00-17:00. It will also open on Sundays 22 Nov & 6, 13, 20 Dec from 12:00-16:00.

Dublin “Meet the Stemettes” Panel Event

On Saturday 07 November social enterprise Stemettes will be running a panel event in Dublin to give local girls access to role models who have excelled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The panel will feature a range of women who have built successful careers in STEM, plus one “mystery man”.
Stemettes, last year named as EU Digital Impact Organisation of the Year, inspires girls into STEM via panel events, hackathons, exhibitions, and mentoring schemes.
The panelists are:
+ Laura Tobin – An experimental physics graduate, a graduate of the TCD-UCD Innovation Academy and currently a PhD candidate in optical engineering at University College Dublin
+ Elle Loughran – A 6th Year student who was recently appointed to the Youth Panel of the British Science Association and named a global youth leader in nanotech by the Emerging Technologies Hub. She participated in Stemettes’ Outbox Incubator over the summer and blogs about life, education and STEM at frizzyroselle.eu

Science Week 2015 takes place from 08-15 November. There are about 1392 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 150 events are in Dublin, 27 of them are free events and 18 are free events in Dublin for adults and families. That is unfortunately only HALF the free events for adults and families than last year! Some of the events require pre-booking (and could be booked out already).

The Dublin Unitarian Church is holding five lunchtime talks in the run-up to the Paris summit on different aspects of climate change.
This week environmental journalist Frank McDonald will discuss if world leaders can do better than at the chaotic 2009 Copenhagen summit and if any deal will be enough to ward off the worst impacts of climate change.

What is Life? – Science Week Talk

The DNA sculpture in the grounds of the National Botanic Gardens celebrates the role of Irish scientists in the search for the molecule of inheritance, as well as some remarkable insights into the origins of life. It was a lecture given by the physicist Erwin Schrödinger at Trinity College Dublin in February 1943 that inspired the search for DNA and a number of Irish scientists were vital to the understanding and discovery of how living things ultimately work.
Matthew Jebb will reveal some of the amazing stories captured in this sculpture as well as explaining what scientists currently think about how and where life first began.

Science Week 2015

Science Week 2015 takes place from 08-15 November. There are about 1392 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 150 events are in Dublin, 27 of them are free events and 18 are free events in Dublin for adults and families. That is unfortunately only HALF the free events for adults and families than last year! Some of the events require pre-booking (and could be booked out already).
The website provides an event search facility with good filtering, so you can select the type of event, the target audience, the location etc.

Irish Open Diving Championships 2015

From 13-15 November, Swim Ireland will welcome top divers from across all of Europe to the Irish Open Diving Championships.
Ireland’s top divers Oliver Dingley and Natasha MacManus will be joined by some of the best divers from across Ireland and Europe.

Women in Medieval Irish History (c.500-1500) – Conference

This 2-day conference (on 13+14 November) will look at how women colluded, subverted and survived the structures of patriarchy in medieval Ireland between c. 500 and 1500. It is entitled
“Collusion, Subversion & Survival: Women in Medieval Irish History (c. 500-1500)”
and is organised by the Centre for Gender and Women Studies, the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Medieval History Research Centre.

Fire in the Blood – Film Screening & Discussion

The film screening of “Fire in the Blood” takes place in the Stanley Quek Theatre. The screening will be followed by a Panel Discussion.
“Fire in the Blood” tells the story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments aggressively blocked access to low-cost AIDS drugs for the countries of Africa and the global south – causing ten million or more unnecessary deaths.
Fire in the Blood is the never-before-told true story of the remarkable coalition which came together to stop ‘the Crime of the Century’ and save millions of lives in the process. As the film makes clear, however, this story is by no means over. With dramatic past victories having given way to serious setbacks engineered far from public view, the real fight for access to life-saving medicine is almost certainly just beginning.

With over 50 years’ experience of keeping bees, Eamon Magee currently has three apiaries at Mount Anville Dublin 14, Kilmaccannogue and Laragh Co Wicklow.

Young Bankers in Ireland – Is there any hope for us?
On 25 October, the Sunday Business Post printed a letter in the “Ask Emma” money advise column from a “Tim” in Meath.
“Tim” wrote that he is 33 and single and just moved back from London to Ireland after 6 years in London. He is now living with his parents in Meath and just got a permanent job with a salary of EUR 42,000 in Dublin. Tim now wants to know from the newspaper’s Money Editor Emma Kennedy hos much he should save every month and what savings accounts options he has so that he can save for a deposit to buy his own place.
Tim is 33 and seems to be intelligent enough to get a 42k job, so you could think that he shouldn’t find it too difficult to check a few banking websites and compare the available products. But on the other hand, it is a question that probably a good few people have and in addition, the banking industry is definitely not the best when it comes to clarity and simplicity. So, I guess “Tim’s” questions are normal and understandable questions.
But wait…..! What is Tim’s new permanent job for 42k? Ohhh!! Tim’s new job is “Fund Administrator”. :-O
If a Fund Administrator can’t read banking websites to find out about savings products and if a Fund Administrator needs to ask a newspaper (money) agony aunt how much money he should save, then we are in serious trouble in this country!! Odd!!
