Hi all!

If you regularly check the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page, you know that I wasn’t sure on Friday morning if there will be a Dublin Event Guide at all this week. I have hurt my back and while it has improved a bit since Tuesday, sitting for long hours is the worst for it. Because of this, it looked bad on Thursday night. But, I fought through it and got the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) finished. A small amount of events didn’t make it in, but all relevant events are included. Thanks for your huge support on Facebook! I appreciate it and I am happy that I can thank you with a Dublin Event Guide! :-)

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week you will find me at the non-free Bloom in the Park and also at the free Dublin Port Riverfest. If you have curious kids, bring them to Shanganagh Park for the Science and Technology event “How?”. And if you like music, definitely check out the “Forbidden Fruit and the City” gigs. They are – as far as I can see – not very well advertised, so you might not have heard about it yet. All Forbidden Fruit and the City events are free and you might find an uncut diamond among them. ;-)

Anything else? Yes, there is Bloom Fringe with a vast amount of events this Saturday. All garden related, if that is your thing. And then there is the Woman’s World exhibition in the RDS if that interests you.

Next week, look out for the MythFest, a festival in TCD that is for everyone who like storytelling and Irish mythology and also look out for the Green Drinks Dublin event on Tuesday with a talk about the misunderstood moths.

Trade School – Looking for Teachers

On 07 June another Trade School event will take place. “Trade School” is a concept where everyone who has something to teach can teach their preferred topic, but you won’t be paid, instead you get “barter” in return for your teaching.

The “Street Performance World Championship” is dead! Long live the…..

Yes, Long live the “Laya Healthcare City Spectacular”. It was announced last week that an event will take place again this year (from 11-13 July in Merrion Square), but it won’t be the geniusly named “Street Performance World Championship” anymore, instead it has been renamed into “City Spectacular”.

I am not yet completely convinced that the new name is an improvement, but I am assured that the content of the three day festival will get better and that the street performance aspect is still the main focus of the event. So let’s hope for the best! I was a massive fan of the Street Performance World Championship and I hope I will become a big fan of the City Spectacular as well.

Dublin Speaks Free – Free Language Classes

By coincidence I found a Facebook Page that you have to know about: “Dublin Speaks Free” is a group of native language teachers who are passionate about language and who would like that everyone has a chance to learn a language and socialize in a very friendly environment.

The “Dublin Speaks Free” initiative has native speaker teachers and also provides all class material to the students. The classes are free, but donations are very welcome and even needed to cover cost for materials etc.

They currently provide Mondays Italian Beginner at 18:00, Spanish Beginner at 19:00 and English Intermediate at 20:00. On Tuesdays there is French Beginner at 18:00, Spanish Intermediate at 19:00 and German Beginner at 20:00.

The classes take place in the Kings Inn Pub in Bolton Street, Dublin 1 and there is a big room reserved for the group.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . DIT BA Photography Graduate Exhibition

The 2014 BA Photography graduate exhibition features the photographic projects of fourteen final year students and reflects a diverse range of approaches to contemporary photography. The exhibition takes place in not just one, but two venues:

Gallery of Photography (Open: Tues-Sat: 11:00-18:00, Sun 13:00-18:00) and National Photographic Archive (Open: Mon-Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun 12:00-17:00).

The exhibition will be officially opened on Tues 03 June at 18:00 by Elizabeth Kirwan, Curator at the National Photographic Archive.

Transient Worlds – Group Exhibition

Transient Worlds is a group show from five contemporary painters, Peter Burns, Gabhann Dunne, Anne Hendrick, Mary Noonan & Caroline Patten, each of whom address the inherent formal qualities and processes of painting. They expose their own individual, alternative worlds, examining themes such as mythology and folklore, identity, cultural history, landscape, environment and notions of humanity.

Admission to exhibition and also to the Opening Reception are free.

Stag and Stallion – Tony O’Connor

The Doorway Gallery are inviting to the exhibition ‘Stag and Stallion’ by the artist Tony O’Connor.

Peter Curling will officially open the exhibition on Thursday 29 May at 18:00 and the show will run until the 26th of June.

The exhibition consists of paintings of Stags and Stallions only, but in all cases the background is kept very very simple so that the animal completely stands out on the paintings.

Open: Mon-Sat 10:30-18:00 and Late night Thurs until 19:30. Admission is free.

Bloom Fringe – Gardening-related events

Over the June Bank Holiday weekend “Bloom in the Park”, the big gardening event in Phoenix Park, will take place and related, but unconnected a new gardening event has been created that will happen for the first time this year. The event is called “Bloom Fringe” and will consist of a large number of events with a gardening theme.

Bloom Fringe is a collective of the most creative enthusiasts and professionals to showcase works from the world of gardening, sustainability, architecture, food, fashion and more. The garden-related events will take place in pop-up venues in parks, gardens, lane-ways and Dublin City Centre as well as in permanent venues such as cafés, shops etc.

Yoga in Phoenix Park

This will be the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from www.aditiyoga.org/ and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

FAT – Science Gallery Exhibition

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!

Forbidden Fruit and the City – Gigs

Forbidden Fruit is the (non-free) festival at the Irish Museum od Modern Art this weekend. Headliners are The Flaming Lips, 2 Many DJs and Bell X1.

But even if you will not afford yourself the tickets for Forbidden Fruit, you can benefit from the event because for the first time this year, there will be a 2-day “Forbidden Fruit in the city” music trail, which is completely free.

A total of 20 bands have been chosen from last year’s Hard Working Class Heroes festival and they will perform acoustic sets in venues like Twisted Pepper, The Church and HMV Grafton Street.

FAT – Science Gallery Exhibition

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!

Forbidden Fruit and the City – Gigs

Forbidden Fruit is the (non-free) festival at the Irish Museum od Modern Art this weekend. Headliners are The Flaming Lips, 2 Many DJs and Bell X1.

But even if you will not afford yourself the tickets for Forbidden Fruit, you can benefit from the event because for the first time this year, there will be a 2-day “Forbidden Fruit in the city” music trail, which is completely free.

A total of 20 bands have been chosen from last year’s Hard Working Class Heroes festival and they will perform acoustic sets in venues like Twisted Pepper, The Church and HMV Grafton Street.

In a Robot zone you can learn all about the technology of Robotics including computer aided design, electronic and mechanical engineering, physics, computer science, maths and practical skills. CoderDojo Dun Laoghaire will be at the event running free open source, coding (programming) sessions for 5-17 year olds. (Limited places – first come first served. If you want to take part, bring your own laptop.) Try out Minecraft to test your skills in designing and creating structures, with the best designs displayed afterwards on a big screen. The weather forecast – at the time of writing this – is very poitive. We know, this could change ten more times until then, but I am very hopeful.

Nearly all shops in the city centre and in the main shopping centres will be open, public transport is however on a weekend schedule. Park & Display will not be enforced, so on-street parking is free. If you need to travel somewhere between Merrion Square, Booterstown, UCD and St. Stephen’s Green, be aware that the Woman’s Mini Marthon is taking place today, so severe traffic limitations will apply in this area.

Dublin Port Riverfest

The Dublin Port Riverfest is taking place on North Wall Quay this bank holiday weekend from Saturday until Monday.

There will be 3 tall ships and four schooners visiting for the weekend, the Jeannie Johnston Tall Ship will let you visit the ship for free and Dublin Tug Boats Shackleton & Beaufort will perform Tug Boat Dances.

On land you will encounter an Open Air Food & Crafts Market, street performers, music from shanty singers and others, face painting and carnival attractions, children’s art & circus workshops. There will be pirate re-enactments, exhibitions in the CHQ Building, Customs Sniffer Dog Demonstrations and daily performances by the Sukhishvlli Georgian Dancers and Rustavi Georgian Singers on an outdoor stage.

Woman’s Mini Marathon

The Flora Woman’s Mini Marathon is a hugely popular event that takes place every year on the June Bank Holiday. In 2013 the staggering amount of 40,717 women participated.

It is a 10km run/jog/walk/crawl from Baggot Street to Booterstown, then via Nutley Lane to the Stillorgan Dual Carriage Way. The the course takes a little loop towards Stillorgan before it turns back to Donnybrook and the run finishes in Fitzwilliam Street. A map is here. In previous years the route was somewhat different and the finish was at Stephen’s Green, this has changed!!

It is not a free event and you can’t register for it anyway anymore, but you can still cheer on the participants on Monday. They appreciate your support along the route!

Catherine Bertrand will talk about moths, one of the most misunderstood creatures in our backyards. First Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Sites

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therfore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

The Rose Gardens at Trinity College will be transformed into a festival hub featuring a 150 seat outdoor theatre. The plays will be staged on campus and in venues across the city.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

Women Who Rock Weekend – Gigs

John Ford Ireland Symposium

Irish-American film director John Ford is regarded as one of the most influential and important filmmaker of his generation. He was born in Maine, USA in 1895 and died in 1973 and his career spanned more than 50 years. He created more than 140 films, including numerous classics such as ‘The Searchers’, ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’, ‘The Grapes of Wrath’, ‘The Quiet Man’ and ‘How Green Was My Valley’.

The John Ford Ireland Symposium is an event for budding filmmakers, movie lovers and John Ford fans. There will be film screenings, panel discussions, public interviews, music for the screen events and performances, master classes and more. All events are ticketed, but a good few are free, so it is worth going through the list here and the non-free events might interest you too, if you are a film lover, so check it out.

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks

The guided walks for June are not announced yet at the time of writing this, but the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs walks every month, all are free and are all of varying difficulty. Check the website in a few days, I expect it will be updated by Tuesday at the latest.

This is odd

Plastic found in Honey in Switzerland

A newspaper article reported that in Switzerland plastic pieces were found in honey. The article is here, but it is in German. At first I was quite surprised: How would plastic get into one of the cleanest and purest food and I expected that some bad company did a bad job in the production process and dirtied the honey, but that would be too simple.

It turns out that the plastic pieces are tiny tiny fragments and the assessment is that they are from peeling creams and toothpaste that contains small plastic balls to achieve the cleaning effect they promise.

But imagine what that means!? It means that we will in future eat LOTS of plastic because seemingly these small pieces can’t get filtered out in water treatment plants.

Hmmm, great future for eating healthy.
