Hi all!

Happy New Year to all of you!! I hope you had a good start of 2014 and are looking forward to the opportunities and excitement it will bring.

[ad]

2013 was an amazing year for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). We started the year with 13,000 subscribers and we are ending it with 19,500. A big thanks to every single one of you for making the Dublin Event Guide to what it is and for helping with the growth by 6500 people. On Facebook the changes are even more dramatic: We started 2013 with 11,400 Likes and we are ending the year with 40,000 Likes! Wow!!!

That raises the question about the next goals, right? Well, I will be a little conservative – for a change! ;-) My goals are to have the subscribers at above 25,000 in 12 months time and to grow the Facebook Likes to more than 60,000. Why am I somewhat conservative? For two reasons: 1) I will not be able to reach 25k or 60k on my own. I absolutely need your help and I first need you to agree to these goals or – even better – to push me to higher goals. 2) There is a point from where increasing the numbers requires advertisement that might cost money and currently the budget doesn’t allow that yet.

I would love it, if you would send me mails to dublineventguide@gmail.com (with subject MAKE IT BIG) with the goals that you think I should go for! ;-)

I am looking forward to a great New Year with you! Thanks for your continued support!!

Because a new month has started. I already have to ask you again for your financial help. As you know, I don’t get any money for compiling the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) week after week. One day, I hope that my work every week and for the last 340 weeks now, will be rewarded somehow, but until then I will happily work 35 hours per week for free. But I do need your help to pay the bills for sending this weekly e-mail magazine. The bill is a relatively low EUR 170 every month and I am looking for donations and sponsorship to cover this cost. ANY amount is appreciated, but I suggest a donation of between EUR 12 and EUR 20. At EUR 12, that’s just EUR 1 per month! Please help at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Thanks!

And finally: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 19,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 40,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have a great 2014!

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Have you made New Year’s Resolutions on New Year’s Eve? Did you write them down? Often New Year’s Resolutions are not effective and are forgotten by 15 Jan. But it is good to use the start of the new year to take stock and to make an effort to improve the aspects of your life that could do with improvements.

The reason why they New Year’s Resolutions are broken so easily and so fast is because they are badly formulated. Most people don’t write them in positive language. Don’t set clear deadlines and don’t make them measurable. A New Year’s Resolution of “I should get fitter.” or “I want to eat/drink less.” is no help. Instead you need to define them clearer.

Have a look at this video clip if you want to achieve your Goals www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHMJhXWNrIA

And if you want to learn even more about Goal setting and achieving, check out Brian Tracy’s book here.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Magdalena S, Fidelma M, Tania Z, Louise Q, Barbara Q-B, Catherine G were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks! Can you help too? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

We are still in a slow week. Many people that organise events have stopped before December and now have to get into gear again. In addition the first week is one where many people are still on holidays, so event organisers “stay away” from this time.

But have a look at the First Fortnight events until 11 January. They might not be free, but are definitely interesting.

This Saturday, I would recommend the Street Art Exhibition “Dedicated” and if House is your thing, the Klangkarussell gig (if you can still get free tickets). On Sunday, Sudnay at Noon is back if you like classical music. Or go to the market in Dun Laoghaire’s People’s Park.

Also check out the Upcoming events listing! There are always a good few things in there, but you need to request tickets and they could have tight deadlines.

Daddyo – New Dad iPhone App

If you are a new dad or will be a new dad soon, this iPhone app will interest you!

To learn all the things you have to know about becoming and being a dad, you had to read through piles and piles of books until now. The time from conception to the babies age of 6 months can be full of interesting, daunting, unexpected, shocking but also wonderful experiences and Tom Cunningham, who works for iQ Content and who developed the wonderful Dublin Event Guide logo and the graphics used for the Dublin Event Guide, just recently became a first time dad and went through all this.

For your benefit, he developed – together with the talented people in iQ Content – the survival kit for first time dads in the form of an iPhone app. The app is available for EUR 1.79 at itunes.apple.com/us/app/daddyo/id775136760 and iQ Content have provided an app for 5 Dublin Event Guide readers for free. If more than five people want it we will do a draw OR might decide on who needs it most. So, to enter the competition send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject DADDYO and with your full name AND the reason why you need it in the body of the mail. You should also mention when your child is expected to be born. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Wednesday 08 Jan.

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 19,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Giving money for free!?

Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!

But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?

This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon

You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.

And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Easter Bunnies already sighted in Dublin

Yes, the (now discounted) Santas are not gone yet, but the first Easter Bunnies have already been sighted in Tescos in Dublin on 02 Jan 2014. Easter is this year on 20 April, so 3 months and 18 days before the day, Chocolate Bunnies and even Easter Eggs are being sold in Tesco. :-o Many of us are disturbed year after year by the early display of Christmas decoration (and others are disturbed by the complaints of the ones who are disturbed :-) ). But maybe we have to add a disturbance about Easter to the list of First World upsets!?

In other, but related news: I was in two supermarkets on Thursday and saw in each two freezers full of turkeys. Are they from last Christmas or did they already stock the freezers for Christmas 2014? ;-)

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Alliance Francaise Photo Award

12 Dec – 31 Jan

Alliance Francaise, 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2

The Irish winner can enter the international contest and win a private exhibition in Paris organised by the Fondation Alliance française. Admission is free. www.alliance-francaise.ie/

Please note: The Alliance Francaise is closed until 04 Jan, so to see this exhibition you have to wait until after that date.

Little Christmas

09:00, Mon 06 Jan

Dublin (various locations)

Merry Christmas!! …if today is your Christmas Day, e.g. in Russia and other eastern countries.

Feliz Reyes Magos! …if you are Spanish!

Merry Nollaig na mBan! …if you are Irish. Women’s Christmas in Ireland in olden times was the day when women were let go to go out and not do any work on that day. To thank them for the work they did over Christmas, on 06 Jan, the husband had to work for one day and let his wife go out with her friends. Interesting, nice and rather unique tradition, but did/does it really “compensate” for the huge amount of work mothers deliver over Christmas?

Grow your own….. – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 20:00, Tue 07 Jan

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The Science Gallery is re-opening today after the Christmas holidays and you only have another 12 days to see the “Grow Your Own” exhibition.

The current Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.

This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.

As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.

The exhibition is open Tuesday-Sunday. (Weekdays: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun: 12:00-18:00) Admission is free.

WOSP – Polish Christmas Charity

18:00 – 22:00, Thu 09 Jan

Exchange Dublin, Upper Exchange Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOSP – Wielka Orkiestra Swiatecznej Pomocy – en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Orchestra_of_Christmas_Charity ) is a yearly charity event that takes place in Poland and in places where Polish people live outside of Poland. This year is the 22th anniversary of the event and for the 9th time WOSP will take place in Dublin as well. This year’s cause is to raise funds to safe the lives of children and providing adequate health care for the elderly.

This year the event takes place in the Exchange Dublin, but unfortunately I couldn’t find out what the events consists of. It is an art exhibition again, like last year? If that’s the case, then you would expect that an auction takes place on Sunday to sell the art for the charity, but I couldn’t find any details.

Check the Facebook Page below, hopefully it will clarify. Admission is free, but donations are (usually) happily received and will go to the charities.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

The Gathering – Success or Failure?

“The Gathering” is over and oddly there was NO appetite to extend it at the end of the year. I say “oddly” because if it had been seen as a success, you would have expected someone to say “Hey, it went so well, let’s keep it going because we still need money!” But no, The Gathering was quietly put into its grave. There was not even a big ceremony to say Good-Bye to the Gathering, it just disappeared. Odd!!

The next question if it delivered. At the beginning of the year, a figure of 325,000 additional visitors and 170mio additional revenue was mentioned as the goal and this would generate 3000 additional jobs. (see this document www.corkcoco.ie/co/pdf/52353512.doc ) and what does the end result say? The man who was in charge of it (talk about independent analysis!) came to the conclusion that 275,000 additional visitors came, but luckily they all were fleeced more than expected and they did leave exactly the anticipated 170mio. I wonder how they counted that! Which accountant has approved those figures? Could it be that they just needed to hit the 170 and therefore they did? Hmmmm.

Jobs? Ehhh, nobody mentions them anymore! Maybe because they would all go again once the Gathering is over?

Cost? The whole thing did cost 13mio.

So, if the 170m are true (and even if the figure is somewhat smaller) the result is a good positive bottom line, but why are we not doing it for the next 3 year as well? 4×170 is a lot more than 1x 170 and don’t tell me that all who could/would/should come already came and now we have to wait 4 years until they have saved enough money again to come the next time.

Oh, and then there is the other question about the consistency of visitor numbers and spend. Only if 2010, 2011 and 2012 showed the same low figures we can say that it was the Gathering that was the reason for the increase of 170m but if any previous years showed high figures as well (some people in tourism talk about a natural cycle of 4 years) then it was MAYBE the Gathering that got more people to come.

We should be happy about the 170m and say THANKS! to our relatives and friends from abroad. I am not sure if it was the Gathering or maybe just increased advertisement that got people to come but the oddest thing will remain this:

Employee: “Boss, the new product sells like hot cakes and makes lots of money.”
Boss: “Quick, take it off the shelf! We will stop selling it immediately!”

It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe.
