Hi all!

When I sent the Dublin Event Guide last week the Arthur Guinness Project voting wasn’t over yet, but I hope you all have LIKED the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and if you have done so, then you know that we made it to Position 9 in the end. :-) An amazing achievement, considering that we were coming from the back of the field. So, once again: Thank you sooo much!

[ad]

Next steps? Now the judges are mulling over who to award the price and my guess is that out of the 34 short listed Arts projects only about 10 will get funding. So there will be lots of disappointed applicants. Are we save? Absolutely not! There are a number of very strange projects in the list of the 340 applicants, but the majority of the short-listed projects are genuinely interesting and good projects. Some fit into “Art” better than others if you have a more narrow definition of the term and nobody knows what exactly the judges are looking for. The announcement will be made in about 2 weeks and I will inform you on Facebook as soon as I am formally told. Keep your fingers crossed!

I am late again with this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and I find it difficult to speed up the process of compiling this weekly e-mail magazine. I am trying a few different things, but nothing resulted in an improvement yet. I won’t give up, though! :-)

Many will be away in Stradbally at the Electric Picnic and if you look the list of events this week, you might think there is less happening. You are partially right, there is no big headline event and some normally weekly events even got moved to the Electric Picnic, but there are still more than 160 events in the list. Dublin is always busy if you want it to be! :-)

More and more people find out about it and about our big community and this Dublin Event Guide Community keeps growing! There is a good chance that we reach the big number of 30,000 Facebook Likes! And we possibly also get to more than 17,000 e-mail magazine subscribers! It is great! Nevertheless remember that YOU are the best ambassador for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), so keep telling your friends and family and colleagues about it! If you tell them about our amazing achievements, maybe they want to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide

The bills continue and until the Arthur Guinness Project has made a decision we can’t bank on anything, so if you can help with the monthly bill of EUR 170 I appreciate it. You can do it here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

And without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) you can also help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have a great weekend + week!

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Happiness is what we all want, isn’t it? But our day-to-day life is often soo frustrating that it is difficult to feel happy. In recent weeks, I mentioned here that research shows that Gratitude makes you happier and I also said that you should enjoy the journey instead of just waiting for get to the destination. But all this is easier said than done, isn’t it?

This week I found video clip that explains what simple strategy we can use to celebrate what we have achieved instead of constantly longing for the goals in the future. It is a very interesting video. Just 4 minutes well spent. Have a look here www.youtube.com/watch?v=xREiqM0X6Ik

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week John R, Nicole W, Margo C, Eamonn U, Pamela McH, Joel B, Gerard Ph, Fiona F, Yvonne O’S and the Dublin Cycling Campaign (www.dublincycling.ie) were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend, I suggest that you check out the Granby Pop-Up Park! If you have children, don’t miss the Family Fitness & Adventure Day at Farmleigh House, it sounds cool and I wish I was a kid! If you want to learn more, go to the RDS, where the Which Course Expo takes place. And then there are two very unique events taking place this weekend: The Smithfield Horse Fair is taking place and is the second and last that will take place this year. And then there is the 1913 Lockout Commemoration on Sunday. An event that could be quite interesting or very very boring, depending on your interest and on how it is put in reality.

Whatever you do, make the best of it and have an enjoyable weekend!

Competitions

Down with Jazz – Ticket Competition

06-08 Sept (Fri+Sat from 19:30, Sun 14:00-20:00)
Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

Down With Jazz is inspired by the 1930’s movement to ban jazz music from the dancehalls and airwaves in Ireland by members of the church and GAA. It is a music festival with 3 days of the finest Irish based jazz, blues, funk and world musicians. It will take place at Meeting House Square and the bug umbrellas give you the protection of an indoors venue with the airiness of an open air gig.

I was at that festival last year and really enjoyed it. The little promo clip here www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Wjy5L7ZCus doesn’t tell you that much about the event itself. but just imagine really good jazz, blues and funk in a cool venue. That’ll do!

Tickets are this year EUR 10 per day or EUR 25 for a weekend pass (children under 12 are free on the Sunday!) and you can book on www.entertainment.ie/show-/Meeting-House-Square/Down-With-Jazz-Festival/event-2686297.htm

More details can be found here www.downwithjazz.ie/ amd here www.facebook.com/DownWithJazz

The organisers are making 10 (!!) pairs of tickets available for the Friday night and if you want win a pair of tickets for this great event, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with DOWNJAZZ in the subject line and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Wed 04 Sept.

The line up on the three days is:

+ Fri: Chris Engel Quintet, Nigel Mooney Band, Ripe for Rebels, Yurodny

Tickets are EUR 22 and you can buy them via the website of the Dublin Flamenco Festival here. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the door tomorrow evening, so if you forgot to buy your tickets, you have still another chance.

New HMV to accept old gift cards and vouchers!

This is great news for HMV gift card or voucher owners. So, the new HMV (which has no legal obligation to accept the vouchers of the old bankrupt company) has decided to accept lots and lots of cards and vouchers. This will be a straight loss for the company, but a great thing for the people. I would recommend that you don’t wait too long, just in case. Hopefully you still have the voucher/gift card and didn’t throw it away when you got frustrated at HMV’s closure. www.breakingnews.ie/business/hmv-to-accept-gift-cards-at-dublin-and-limerick-branches-604834.html

Peats now closed for good

The HMV news is good for consumers, but only time will tell if it is the right decision for the company. Another company, Peats World of Electronics has thrown the towel now for good. They closed about 2 years ago and then re-opened only two shops and wanted to put more focus on online sales, but seemingly that never happened and the shops didn’t generate enough money. So, Goodbye Peats! On one hand it is a pity, considering that they were the probably only small-ish electronics shop left, but on the other hand it was to be expected. www.breakingnews.ie/business/we-had-no-option-but-to-close-says-peats-world-of-electronics-owner-604826.html

@TheDrawingRoom

@TheDrawingRoom is an interesting new project designed to develop our awareness of architecture, culture and heritage through a series of events in some of Dublin’s finest Georgian town houses. As an alternative to the concert hall or a gallery setting, you can enjoy music and art in selected houses. There will be multimedia installations, photography, ceramics, painting and furniture design exhibitions. More information can be found at www.thedrawingroom.info/ and at www.facebook.com/MusicRoomReflections

It is one of many projects that makes use of alternative/different/unusual or vacant spaces for cultural projects and the Granby Pop-Up Park is a project with the same inspiration. The Granby Popo-Up Park was funded through a EUR 20,000 crowdfunding fundraiser on fundit and @TheDrawingRoom are also inviting you to help them via fundit campaign. The campaign will go live at 12:00 on Friday and all details can be found via here: www.fundit.ie/project/thedrawingroom

Opportunities

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Granby Pop-up Park

10:00, Sat 31 Aug

Granby Park, Lower Dominick Street, Dublin 2

On a vacant site where a few years ago still social housing was standing, the voluntary arts collective, Upstart, has created a big urban Pop-up Park, called Granby Park. The park opened on Thursday and will be there until 22 Sept. During this time a whole range of events will take place in the park and nearly all of them will be free.

“Urban Park” usually means that you have to go a bit easy on your expectations regarding plants and greenery, but if you consider that work only started in July, you can imagine that the term “park” has to be interpreted a good bit wider. One thing is certain, though: It will be nicer than Wolf Tone Square, which Dublin City at times likes to call “Wolfe Tone Park”.

Be a Docker for a day? Historical Re-enactment

11:00, Sat 31 Aug

O’Connell Street, Dublin 1

Do You Want To Be A Docker For A Day? (or a Jacobs worker)

Do you want to take part in a Historical Re-enactment of the 1913 Lockout? Do you want to be a Docker for the day or a (female) Jacobs Worker?

You are asked to come dressed as

1) Dockers (men) (Meet at Custom House)
If coming as a docker, please wear dark trousers (not jeans or combats) with a belt or braces, collarless shirt with
a muffler or handkerchief around the neck, dark waistcoat or jacket, hat or cap with dark shoes (no trainers).

2) Jacobs Workers (women) (Meet at rear of Central Bank)
If coming as a Jacobs workers, please wear a dark ankle-length dress or skirt, a light coloured blouse and dark
boots or flat shoes (no trainers). If possible please wear a dark coloured or straw hat.

3) Poor of Dublin (men, women and children) (Meet at Gloucester Diamond on Sean MacDermott Street)
Men, women or children coming as the ‘poor of Dublin’ should wear old, torn or shabby clothes (see notes for
men and women above) and very old shoes (no trainers)

www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/Events/Documents/1913.pdf

Sounds complicated and I wonder where people get these clothes from – just for one day. Unless there is planned (i.e. hired) crowds as well, it could turn out that only tiny amount of people will take part in these re-enactments and that would be very disappointing for the audience.

Yoga in Phoenix Park

Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.

All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems – Science Gallery

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 31 Aug

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.

Have a look at the website below to see an outline on what is on show. I strongly recommend that you see the show and tell me afterwards what you thought about it: dublineventguide@gmail.com (During the week (Tues-Fri) the exhibition is open until 20:00 and from 12:00 and on Sat+Sun; 12:00-18:00).

Smithfield Horse Fair

09:00 – 13:30, Sun 01 Sep

Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7

The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.

It seems they couldn’t stop it or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so the newly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.

To take the trading element out somewhat and to add another “softer” dynamic, music, storytelling and other entertainment was added.

The September Horse Fair is the second ever under the new rules and nobody knows yet if it will still be a horse market or maybe not anymore because the traders stay away and sell and buy their horses elsewhere.

The Entertainment will run from 10:30 until 13:30:

10:30 NC Lawlor Slide Guitarist
11:00+13:00 Story session
11:30+12:30+13:30 Whiskey your the Devil

Granby Pop-up Park

10:00, Sun 01 Sep

Granby Park will be open Mon-Fri from 08:00-19:00 and Sat&Sun from 10:00-19:00 and you are invited to visit it. Food & Drink will be sold on site, but alcohol is not permitted.

I strongly recommend that you check it out and I will also tell you about the upcoming events in the next few weeks.

1913 Bloody Sunday Commemoration

11:00, Sun 01 Sep

O’Connell Street. Dublin 1

Organized by the 1913 Lockout Centenary committee, the Dublin Council of Trade Unions and the North Inner City Folklore Project, the Bloody Sunday, a day on which many workers were injured due to police brutality during the 1913 Lockout, will be commemorated and re-enacted. If you want to be part of the re-enactment, look for the separate notice in this Dublin Event Guide that describes the clothing and the meeting points.

This is the schedule for the day:

11:00 Assembly at various locations for re-enactment participants
12:30 State Commemoration starts
13:30 Wreath laying ceremony at Larkin statue
14:00 Re-enactment of Bloody Sunday
15:00 Unveiling of plaque for those who died in Foley Street
15:30 Soup kitchen and fleadh in Foley Street

www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/Events/Documents/1913.pdf

Expect that the “State Commemoration” element of the event will not be very interesting. The Re-enactment could be interesting if the organisers manage to get a good few hundred people to participate. If only a small amount of people participate, it could turn out quit disappointing. But you might only find out on the day.

ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems – Science Gallery

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 01 Sep

The Portsmouth Sinfonia

12:00, Sun 01 Sep

Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1

This concert is presented in association with the exhibition “Lee Welch: Two exercises in awareness and observation”. The philosophy of the Portsmouth Sinfonia is that anybody can join; there is no basis of skill required. The only guiding rule of the orchestra is that the musicians should not be able to play the instrument they hold in their hands.

Interesting!!! I’d say that could be a horrible, surreal or amazing experience. Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

14:00, Sun 01 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

11:45, Tue 03 Sep

Printing House, Trinity College Dublin, College Green, Dublin 2

Organised by the Dept. of Electronic Engineering, the Guest Lecture “Challenges of Video Manipulation in YouTube” by Thierry Focu from YouTube, Google will take place.

YouTube is the largest video repository in the world and more than 60 hours of video are uploaded every minute.
The backbone is a high throughput ingest and distribution pipeline that relies heavily on efficient network infrastructure and video transcoding technology. Handling such large volumes of data with a guarantee of service to the consumer poses significant challenges to video compression, transcoding and editing. Spanish Film Screening

18:30, Thu 05 Sep

Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place (near National Gallery), Dublin 2

“Other voices / Unes Altres Veus” is a Spanish Documentary about Asperger’s Syndrome.

Ivan Ruiz, psychoanalyst and psychologist in Barcelona, will be at the Institute Cervantes Dublin to present his film Other Voices. A different outlook on autism. Being also an artist, photography and music are used in a unique way in the realisation of this film.

Interestingly, new research indicates that Asperger’s might NOT be a form of Austism, but that the brain connectivity is distinct between the two conditions. So there might be more to discuss after the film now than was originally expected.

Iván Ruiz will be available for a discussion after the film screening. The film is in Catalan and in Spanish and will have English subtitles. Admission is free.

Leinster House to open its doors for Culture Night

Fri 20 Sept

Leinster House

This is a VERY early advance notive, I know. A whole month until Culture Night takes place, but you wouldn’t believe how popular the Leinster House tours are. I got an early heads up and I will quickly pass it on to you so that you have a chance to book your place on the tour. I did the Leinster House (that’s the building where the Irish Parliament is in) last year and it is extremely interesting.

So, if you want to look behind the curtains of political power at a tour, don’t delay and book as soon as possible!

Tours are free, but ticketed and due to high demand there is a limit of four tickets per person. If you want to reserve tickets call 1890 252 808 or better (and cheaper) go to www.oireachtasevents.ie to book.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Too many wreaths?

I could write a lot more about the 1913 Lockout Commemoration and the Tennement House Collapse Commemoration that I don’t fully get, but I think I will leave that. Maybe one day, someone can explain to me, why this is such a BIG celebration or commemoration.

It was a historic event and maybe or possibly it was a very influential historic event, at least if you listen to the Trade Unions. But there are LOTS and LOTS of historic events that might also or even more have had an influence on the now. Are we maybe over-doing the commemoration of sombre and sad events?

The State Commemoration on Sunday in O’Connell Street is similar to the State Commemoration at Easter for the Easter Rising. It is all very very formal and more wreaths than thinking about the positive achievements these tough times and events created.

In 3 years, when the Easter Rising Commemoration will take place at the 100th anniversary, it could easily be that we have soldiers marching down O’Connell Street, the president laying a wreath and the gravity of the event making any laughter ill-placed.

I would celebrate the Easter Rising differently! I would have a big street party for children and adults in O’Connell Street, a carnival, a celebration. Because if we assume that the 1916 Easter Rising had such a big impact on Irish history, then we should thank the people that were passionate about their cause by celebrating them, not mourning them.

Maybe it is me who is odd! But let me put it like that: When I am buried, I would rather have people celebrating that they met me than mourning that I am gone. So, who is for a 1916 Easter Rising celebration!?

Electric Picinic or no Electric Picnic shouldn’t influence if you have a good weekend. There are less events this week, but still plenty of them to go out and enjoy Dublin. ;-)

Have an event-full weekend and week,
