Hi all!
There is so much I could write about in this week’s intro! At the beginning of the week I had the honour and the privilege to be invited to a tour of four great sights in Dublin. We visited the Custom House Museum, Croke Park, Glasnevin Cemetery, Teeling Distillery and EPIC – The Irish Emigration Museum. A great tour and I want to tell you a bit more about that, but I will have to leave it until next week.

Also on the same tour, I met two wonderful, enthusiastic and super charming longtime Dublin Event Guide followers and supporters. And next week I will tell you more about that encounter as well! All I am telling you today is that it made my week! ;-)

|
So what will I write about this week? Well there are TWO big events this week. The first one is obviously the first St. Patrick’s Festival after a 2 year break. St. Patrick’s Day was a glorious day on Thursday and the weather was perfect for the parade and – as a secret St. Patrick’s Day Parade cynic – I have to admit that the parade was quite good this year. Over the weekend, the St. Patrick’s Festival continues at the Festival Quarter at the National Museum at Collins Barracks. Today I can’t just move on to the free events without drawing your attention to the fact that this is the 750th Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)!! 750 weekly editions weeks is a LOT. Imagine doing ANYTHING 750 times. ;-) If you decide that number by 52, you will find out that it is more than 14 years that the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is spreading the word about all sorts of free events to all subscribers and readers.

+++ Green Roots Project Art Exhibition

At the Green Roots Project, it is believed that Ireland is uniquely placed to be a leader of the sustainability movement. Their goal is to encourage people, communities, businesses, schools/colleges and organisations to engage in more environmentally positive actions. This March, they are encouraging children, teens and adults to get involved in green/eco-activities around the celebration of Ireland’s National feast day, in ways that will produce lasting positive impacts on people, local communities and the environment. The “40 Shades of Green” poster art exhibition will be on display in the CHQ Building and the posters have been created by pupils in Irish schools who answered the questions: “In these days of Climate Crisis, what does it really mean to be Green in Ireland? St. Patrick’s Festival continues for anotehr two days at the “Festival Quarter” at the National Museum at Collins Barracks with a Spiegeltent Mór and a Spiegeltent Beag, a 3,000 capacity outdoor Main Stage, Craic Comedy Tent, Story Yurt, performance spaces, relaxation areas and a Irish Food and Craft Village. +++ National Day of Remembrance – Inappropriate pandemic remembrance!
Two years a pandemic impacted our lives in DRASTIC and DRAMATIC ways! Loved ones died, relatives were (unnecessarily and unfairly) stopped from visiting their dying family members and even stopped from attending funerals. All along we were promised a celebration for the people that passed and the people that worked through these tough times and who were being exposed to it all. But things are back to normal and it seems that we will best pretend that it has never happened.

A little un-remarkable press release ended up in my Inbox during the week and it invited “everyone” to come to the “Dublin City Cov id Remembrance Event” in Merrion Square on Sunday from 13:00-13:40. But did you read or hear about it? Was it publicised in a big and fitting way? BIG headlines in all newspapers? Full page invitations to the people in Ireland? A way that half-way as relevant as the restrictions and hardship of the last two years were? It doesn’t seem like it at all! It is more a whisper that hopefully nobody hears!

The Press Release says “The event is part of a National Day of Remembrance in recognition of the efforts of the general public, volunteers and all workers throughout the pandemic and in remembrance of people who lost their lives due to Cov id.” but in the text it even is called an “inti mate event”, so it seems that it was never intended to let the everyone know and to properly commemorate the frontline staff and the people who lost their lives and their friends and relatives.

From 18 March until 10 April fifteen organisations across Ireland will invite to 39 events that will shine a spotlight on the history of the LGBTI+ community. Mainly through talks (in-person or online), webinars and workshops, academics and activists will create this platform for previously overlooked LGBTI+ histories. The National Gallery is usually free anyway, but in current times you will have to book tickets to get access and you have to enter the building on the Merrion Street side.
