Scary all over! – Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! …and Covid!

Hi all!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

It will be different Halloween than in previous year’s, VERY VERY different in fact! No parties, no dressing up, no children looking for treats. Instead we are meant to stay at home and watch TV and wait another….

countdownmail.com

… days until life will continue.

(The Countdown Timer can be seen in the weekly Dublin Event Guide newsletter and on www.dublineventguide.com but not on Facebook.)

The nonsensical rules about “non-essential items” that are now forbidden to be sold in supermarkets got me so annoyed this week that I had to write about it in my blog. But I decided to put it on my blog only for people that are interested:  www.joergsteegmueller.com/2020/10/30/how-to-lose-the-peoples-support-for-anti-covid-measures/

New lockdowns are introduced or ramped up all over Europe and infection numbers are reaching higher levels throughout Europe than the last time, so the restrictions are somewhat justified, but it has to be done WITH the people, not against the people, to be ultimately successful.

Coming back to this year’s Halloween, it just HAS to be different, unfortunately! But organisers have created a whole range of online events for you and as long as they are free, they are listed in this Dublin Event Guide. ;-)

So get on that Zoom call and make the best of it! But ALSO don’t forget to check out the moon tonight! It is allegedly the first time since 1955 (or 1944 or 1974, depending on who tells you about it :-O ) that there is a full moon and a “Blue Moon” on Halloween and this is how it looked yesterday:

Halloween Moon

This brings me on to how you could help me: I need your help with the cost to keep the Dublin Event Guide going. Over the years we have found this deal: I do the work and you help me pay the bills through donations. As long as this works, I will continue. If I have to do the work AND pay the bills, I will stop. Fair??? I think so!

I am not asking for a lot, but I think one or two Euro per MONTH is a very fair suggestion. So for the year, this would be 12 Euro or – for people you can afford a bit more – just 24 Euro per year! That is ONLY 23 or 46 cent per Dublin Event Guide edition! An amazingly low cost for the great value that you get every week! :-)

Please donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide
or for Revolut users among you just via 0872931571.

And if 12 Euro is too much for you, then it would be great if you bought one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide and you can do that on the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And come over to www.DublinEventGuide.com to check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps!!

Thank you very very much!

You want for more events and suggestions?

I found a few more things to keep you going or that you might find interesting:

1) HALLOWEEN EVENTS
It is Halloween, but not as we know it! Nearly all events are online this year and there are no fireworks or live music events. But check out the numerous Halloween Festivals in Dublin. The list is:

++ Otherworld Festival Ballymun (with workshops, storytelling, music performances, competition and more) 12:00-22:00 Online www.facebook.com/otherworldfestival the poster with all events is here www.facebook.com/otherworldfestival/photos/a.634527353254648/4766336063407069/ and a good few of the events can be booked via the Axis website here axisballymun.ticketsolve.com/shows

++ Dockers and Demons Halloween Festival (normally for Ringsend, Irishtown, Docklands, this year: mainly Online) 15:00-21:30 full programme here: www.dockersanddemons.com/whats-on

++ The Cauldron of Smithfield Festival (with JYellowL, The Liberties Majorettes, Hip-Hop artist Paulie, The Breadline Theatre Collective, Sophie Doyle Ryder and more) 17:30-20:30 Online thecauldronofsmithfield.com/

The Cauldron of Smithfield seems to be the same festival as the next one:
++ The Liberties Haunt Virtual Halloween Festival 2020 (Music Performances, Dancing, Singing, Storytelling) 17:30-20:30 Online thelibertieshaunt.com

++ Finglas Fright Night Festival (with Aslan, The Brilliant Trees, Martin McDonnell, Soundstrand, Just Dave, Colm Dawson Magic and some surprises) 20:00 Online www.facebook.com/finglasfright/

2) SCARY HALLOWEEN DRIVE-BY
With the 5km travel limit, that the comes with the second lockdown, I can only recommend this event for people in the Terenure/Tempelogue/D6W area: If you want to show your kids a Halloween house, bring them tonight (Saturday) after around 18:00 to this address:
12 Wellington Cottages, Willington Green, Templeogue, D6W PY10. (Find the address on Google Maps: shor.by/TJds)

A friend and supporter of the Dublin Event Guide will – as long as it is not MAD stormy! – set up some scary displays outside the house and in the windows. So, if it is in your range, drive by and enjoy, I saw some pictures and what I saw looks really good! :-)

3) CURSE HUNTER – BRAM STOKER FESTIVAL
The Bram Stoker Festival is this year a little thin on events, but moving everything online for a festival that celebrates scary things is a big challenge. Only one event, Dracula’s Disco will take place on Sunday, all other events happened on Friday.
But there is one more option that deserves your attention. It is called “Curse Hunters and is an interactive adventure game that can be played at home anywhere in the world and is delivered via your phone or tablet. It is suitable for all ages, but the organisers think Curse Hunters aged 6-11 will love it most of all. www.facebook.com/events/811782652902071/

4) EXPERIMENTAL VIRTUAL SCIENCE GALLERY TOURS
The current Science Gallery exhibition is called “Invisible” and we could joke that it has that name, because we can’t see the exhibition due to the lockdown, but this was not the reason for that name. ;-) Instead, the exhibition shows how science, art and philosophy help imagining the unseen and questioning the invisible.
I was able to see the exhibition on the day the first lockdown was announced in March, which was the day when “Invisible” should have been launched.
To let more people visit the exhibition virtually, the Science Gallery mediators are running virtual tours now on an experimental basis and if you want to participate in such a tour, you can book it via the link below. New slots will be added every week, so if there are no slots available, come back!
dublin.sciencegallery.com/news/were-launching-experimental-virtual-trips-to-invisible

5) LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES – Special Offer
I just bought two new Udemy courses last week, how about you? What skills are you adding during lockdown? Udemy courses are still super popular because as long as we still spend a lot of time at home, it makes sense to use some of that time to learn something new.
Did you learn a new skill in the last few months? In October most Udemy courses will cost between EUR 10.99 and 12.99 again. At some point in August the courses were even reduced to 9.99, but these things happen sometimes without advance warning. I checked though and in September and October there are no 9.99 discounts planned, so you better get the courses when you see form for between 10.99 and 12.99. Please use this link shor.by/GqCk because if you buy through that link, you help the Dublin Event Guide! ;-)

6) READ MORE BOOKS
A new free Book summary can be found here every week: readitfor.me/91927 Readitfor.me actually provides a number of weekly free book summaries and they also have a special offer at the moment still that will expire soon: For $99 you will get Lifetime access to ALL book summaries! This is a great price if you consider that their normal monthly charge is EUR 10, so in just 10 month you would have spent more than with the lifetime access.

To buy physical books and e-books I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include delivery for free (and by using this link you help the Dublin Event Guide). Please don’t use any other links than the one below!! (Book Depository changed all their links and with the old one you don’t help the Dublin Event Guide.) With this link you do help the Dublin Event Guide when you purchase a book and it doesn’t cost you a cent: shor.by/BookDepository

And this is it for another week! Have a good weekend and new week.

Take care,–Joerg
