Hi all!

This week the production of the Dublin Event Guide worked a LITTLE better, but I still have included all events. The next step is to reduce the events and to see if that makes a significant difference. I bet there are some events in the Dublin Event Guide that hardly anybody is interested in. Let’s see how that works.

This week there are more than 200 events again in this Dublin Event Guide. It seems that I keep finding more and more. :-O

There are only two things outstanding, so I will post again in wo stages. The first stage is the update on the Smart Phone app and the website. Then I will add some more events and then send the e-mail. I know this is not ideal, but better than nothing….I Hope.

The Big 500 Share is still running and luckily a few people donated again. We are still far far away from the target, but we got nearly 400 people for the two charities. That is a respectable amount! The Dublin Event Guide (and the charities still needs a LOT of support if you can help! Please check it out in the Dublin News and don’t forget that you will get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book if you help!!! ;-)

This is the FINAL edition.

+++++++++

And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week the Feel Good Slot content is a video with Denzel Washington where he talks about all the failures in his life and that failing is not the problem, but giving up is. He suggests not to Fall Back, but to Fall Forward!

Listen to what he has to say here.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week my picks are today (Saturday) the Fix Jam Repair Cafe and tomorrow (Sunday) the Fusion Sunday World Culture. And then from Friday the St. Patrick’s Festival and the Prawn Festival.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 Share!!

With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide eight weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed end in March and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)

You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.

The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we managed to raise EUR 1200. 400 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for 4 months. So your help is STILL needed!!!

You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!

The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

Three Ireland will be checked out by ComReg – Good!

I mentioned last week in the Dublin News, that Three Ireland is trying to rob their customers by not allowing Three customers to use their domestic phone and data plan when they roam in Europe. Instead Three quickly increased the monthly charges by EUR 5 and also took the “All You Can Eat” data away as a core contract feature. They now claim it is an add on benefit and will only let you All you Can Eat data in Ireland. For roaming only 2 GByte will be provided.

The good news is that ComReg, the telecommunications regulator is checking this contract change out and will hopefully reprimand Three. And another piece of good news: A LOT of people have terminated their contract over this unilateral change of conditions. They got out of a 2 year contract early (in some cases after just a few months) and were allowed to keep their brand new phones for free. The phones will still be SIM-locked, so leaving Three is not THAT easy, but at least they can change it to a 30 day contract which comes with a significantly lower price.

Renaming of one of Ireland’s Political Parties

If you have heard about the AAA (Anti Austerity Alliance) as a political party in Ireland, you will very soon not hear that name anymore. Realising that the name was limiting them to one single issue, they decided to rename and are from now on called “Solidarity”.

The old name never really made sense, but for people that remember the 80s, the name Solidarity (“Solidarnosc”) reminds them of Lech Walesas workers union in Poland that was instrumental in bringing down the communist regime there. The AAA on the other hand as the “leftest” party in Ireland is closer to the Leninism than any other party and it is slightly ironic that they now call themselves Solidarity.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 11 Mar

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

12:00, Sun 12 Mar

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 12:00, but only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Francophonie Screenings: Lithuania

19:00, Mon 13 Mar

Alliance Francaise, 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2

The Lithuanian film “A Promise delivered. Secrets of Vilnius” (2014) will be screened in the Month of Francophonie.

Not many among the vast crowd of readers, who made Romain Gary one of bestselling French novelists of 20th century, know that he was born and spent his childhood in Vilnius, Lithuania. The film “A Promise delivered. Secrets of Vilnius” speaks about that nebulous period of the writer’s life, connections with Vilnius in his life and works. The title of the film is an allusion to one of most famous books of R. Gary – “Promise at dawn”. Comments, made by literary experts and historians, new findings in Lithuanian and French archives bring more light on mysterious personality of R.Gary – the only person who won Le prix Goncourt trophy twice, a decorated war hero, politician, diplomat and homme fatale.

World Pi(e) Day

09:00, Tue 14 Mar

Dublin (various locations)

Today is World Pie Day and Bord Bia and the Irish Apple Growers Association used it for a promotional campaign. Bramley apples were given away for free the weekend before in some places and you were asked to cook an Apple Pie and share it with friends or give it away.

Some where I read that Ireland grows 1/3 of the world’s Barmley apple supply and I was surprised. Not because it is so much, but because it is so little. To me Bramley apples are an abomination of an apple. They should just not exist. Useless unless for cooking! ANd for that reason I am surprised that they are any other countries that grow them. Maybe UK? That would explain. ;-)

Ohh and if you wonder why World Pi(e) day is today, then look at the American way of writing the date (3.14). 3.14 = Pi, so that is where this is all coming from.

Museum of Capitalism – Talk

18:30 – 20:00, Wed 15 Mar

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2

The Museum of Capitalism is an institution dedicated to educating this generation and future generations about the ideology, history, and legacy of capitalism. The Museum will open its inaugural exhibition in 2017 in Oakland, California and the founders and curators of the museum will tell their story at this talk in the Long Room Hub.

Representing the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team of curators, historians, economists, educators, writers, artists, and designers, the Museum strives to broaden public understanding of capitalism through multifaceted programs: exhibitions; research and publication; collecting and preserving material evidence, art, and artifacts related to capitalism; and commemorations, reenactments, and other events.

In this presentation, the museum founders and curators will share some of the process behind the institution’s beginnings, as well as the controversies surrounding what some consider its untimely memorialization. The discussion will deal with the writing of history, the art and politics of curating, institutions and artist-led critique, museums in the Anthropocene, and the challenges of exhibition-making in a “post-truth” era.

GPO Witness History: Meet the Archivist

10:00 – 16:00, Thu 16 Mar

GPO, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1

“GPO Witness History: Meet the Archivist” will take place from 10:00-12:00 and from 14:00-16:00 on Thursday.

At this event you are invited to bring letters and photographs that relate to 1916, The War of Independence and the Civil War and meet the in-house archivist, who will digitise your items (up to 3 items per person), provide you with a copy and advise you on storage and preservation. You will also have the opportunity to have your items included in upcoming online exhibitions at GPO Witness History.

I guess the event is especially for visiting tourists with Irish backgrounds that have 1916 artefacts, because most people living here probably considered submitting their 1916 memorabilia before or in 2016.

Admission is free to this event. It is not clear if this free event will also give you free access to the GPO Witness History museum, but I definitely doubt it. Normal admission charges are EUR 10 for adults.

17:30, Thu 16 Mar

Pearse Street Library, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2

The Spanish film “Tesis” by Alejandro Amenabar will be shown in the Spanish Essentials film series. (In Spanish with English subtitles.)

Why do we find death and violence so intriguing? Is it moral to show violent content in films? If so, should there be any limits to what we see? This is the theme for Ángela’s thesis, a cinema student on the hunt for audiovisual material to illustrate her project. In the process of investigating she finds herself inside what it seems to be a plot in relation to snuff movies (movies showing real violence and killings committed with the sole purpose of facilitating the recording of the film) in which some of her faculty classmates and professors may be involved.

St. Patrick’s Festival – Overview

09:00, Fri 17 Mar

Dublin (various locations)

This year’s St. Patrick’s Festival will run from Friday 17 March until Sunday 19 March. The current longterm forecast (It will change, we are in Ireland after all!!) promises a dry weekend with clouds and even some sunshine on Sunday. The temperature is predicted to be aroun 10-12, which is not bad at all!

The festival weekend is made up of the Festival Ceili on Thursday afternoon on Earlsfort Terrace, then on Friday is St. Patrick’s Day with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. On Saturday the Festival Treasure Hunt will take place and on Sunday the “Big Day Out”, a Family Day around Merrion Square will be the final of the main events.

Out of these four headline events, I strongly recommend the Treasure Hunt and the Big Day Out. They are great events for all ages with plenty to do and to see and to experience.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade, however is not on my must-see list anymore. Once you have seen one, you have more or less seen all. Don’t get me wrong, the parade has improved SIGNIFICANTLY from maybe 10 years ago, but in recent years it is just an overcrowded “Same as the previous year” event, where the floats are nice and the (American) brass bands are great, but the “Wow” is just missing. It is time again for some rejuvenating of the parade.

Oh and if you read about the number of attendees at the parade afterwards, don’t believe a word! They are completely made up. For years the claim is made that more than half a million people are in the City Centre to see the parade. The actual figures are dramatically different as I have calculated a few years ago. Approx. 200,000 are lining the streets and hald of them can SEE the parade (the others forgot their step ladders :-) and only know that it is happening in front of them, but can’t see it).
Here is my calculation: www.joergsteegmueller.com/2012/03/17/st-patrick-parade-lies-and-statistics-round-2/

Dublin Bay Prawn Festival

12:00, Fri 17 Mar

Howth (various locations)

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival takes place in Howth over the St. Patrick’s Festival weekend from Fri 17 – Sun 19 March. With less than a week to go, I would have thought that the website is updated by now, but it still shows the programme for the 2016 Prawn Festival at the time I am writing this (on Friday 10 March).

Let’s hope that the people from Howth remember to provide more information about the programme.

In previous years there is live music in pubs and restaurants and on a main stage and there will be food demonstrations in a marquee at Howth Harbour. Street Entertainment, a Fun Fair and Open Days at the Coastguards and Lifeboat Station were other features. There are some non-free events, but a lot of the entertainment is free.

On a nice day, Howth is definitely always worth a visit and if the Prawn Festival is on there is another reason to venture out to there.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

12:00, Fri 17 Mar

Dublin (various locations)

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade starts at 12:00 at Parnell Square, continues down O’Connell Street and then crosses the Liffey on O’Connell Bridge. Then onwards to Westmoreland Street, College Green, Dame Street and then goes to Christ Church. Here it turns left, goes to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and then there is a big change! Instead of ending at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the parade route continues and turns left into Kevin Street and the new end is now at the Kevin Street/Aungier Street junction.

This is quite an extension of the parade route and is the best decision for many years! The problem has always been that the O’Connell Street and Dame Street area was so crowded that the majority of people couldn’t see the parade, but with this extension I suggest that you go to the Patrick Street or Kevin Street end of the parade and you will have the best chance there to see the parade. Partially because many people will not know yet that it has been extended, but also because even in previous years, the Patrick Street area was a lot less busy.

Up to 250,000 people will line the parade route (don’t believe the “official” numbers of 500,000, that figure is wishful thinking and not based on facts) and that is a large amount for such a relatively short route despite the extension.

If you want to see the parade well (especially with children), you will have to watch it on TV! Or alternatively come well before 10:00 to town. Last year some people told me that they arrived at 08:00 to get a front row place.

The St. Patrick’s Day parade is a yearly institution. But like with all “institutions”, the excitement about it has gone lost a bit and it would be good to shake the parade up again.

While it has significantly improved in comparison to the earlier years of the festival, for the last 5-7 years no substantial change has been made. The themes that are given out every year are not really having much of a differentiation effect on the floats and as a visitor to the parade, you might as well forget about the theme as you won’t recognise it in the floats.

The (American) Marching Bands are good in most years and are the most impressive part of the parade, but in general there is too much “same old, same old” for the parade to be a must-go event.

After the parade, I recommend that you leave the City Centre quickly again and stay away from areas like Temple Bar or Grafton Street. Drunken youngsters really spoil the fun and the fact that there is not much else happening apart from getting drunk is a big weakness of the St. Patrick’s Day plans.

International Women’s Day! Progress Made? Maybe not….

Wednesday was this year’s International Women’s Day and in my daily post on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page I wrote

“The focus of the day is in some regions a celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women for their economic, political and social achievements and in other regions there is a strong political and human rights focus.
We are lucky that the position of women in our society is a lot better than in other countries. But “better” is not the same as “good”! The onus is on us (men and women!) to demand (and provide) fairness and equal opportunities.”

So we have to question/check how far we really came, because it is easy to convince yourself that WE don’t have any problems only others have problems.

Well, a former Dublin Event Guide reader who now lives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) wrote on Facebook that all women in her job got a voucher equivalent to EUR 100 for some treatment. She would have liked to get a massage, but it turned out that only invasive beauty treatments (fillers, botox, etc) would be covered. Shocking! So the assumption must have been by the person/organisation giving the gift that all women want/need some invasive beauty treatment.

“Well, it is UAE, what do you expect!” some might think, but then on Friday Newstalk posted on Facebook that Sean Moncrieff was very unhappy with what the newspaper wrote about Amal Clooney. Amal Clooney is a human rights solicitor who addressed the United Nations (UN) last week about some serious issues regarding Iraq and ISIS. Not something most of us do regularly and she must have worked (and probably fought) hard to get to that position. Amal Clooney also happens to be George Clooney’s wife and it seems that she is pregnant. So what do the UK newspapers like The Sun,The Express, Daily Mail, The Mirror and Vogue write about? They commented on nothing else but her “baby bump” and her “chic dress”. Watch that shocking video clip here: www.facebook.com/newstalkfm/videos/10155966083037907/ So, we THINK we came far in our Western civilised world!? We are not much ahead of the countries we look down to! :-(
