Hi all!

This is the last weekend of summer and the last weekend of school holidays and the last weekend of significantly less traffic on the roads. And since often the weather gets better again in September (probably because kids are back in school now ;-) ), I am looking forward to that coming week. Heritage Week is still on until Sunday and there are markets left, right and centre. So, if you want, you can keep yourself VERY busy this weekend!

I had lots of Internet problems during the week and also had less time than normal for the Dublin Event Guide on Friday due to my day job, so unfortunately it is back to the two-stage publishing process of this Dublin Event Guide. First I will update the smartphone app and the website, then I will add more events and once all is completed, the e-mail will be sent.

This is the FINAL edition.

+++++

Update on the bills: Hurray, the August amount was cleared exactly on the cent! The next bill of EUR 190 will be due at the end of September. Thanks so much to all supporters! If you can help in any way, your help will also be VERY much appreciated!!! Can YOU help here?

And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is one for all the parents (current and future) among the Dublin Event Guide Readers. It is an appeal to you to do more than others, to be different, to be better. And it is very timely with school starting again this week. Mitch Joel is an American publicist and journalist and he said:

I’m not going to let school get in the way of my child’s education. – Mitch Joel

What does he refer to? And why should you not just let others decide what your child will learn and what not?
Think about what you learned in school and how far it got you! Sure you passed exams and there was good stuff among the things that you learned, but also a LOT of unnecessary stuff and was the teaching well done? I guess it wasn’t! Read the “This is Odd” section this week in this Dublin Event Guide to get more food for thought and to see why Mitch Joel is so right!

By the way, if you like these quotes and would like to see more of them, follow me on twitter at www.twitter.com/joergst were I post one or two motivational quotes every day. And if you are on Twitter anyway, also follow the Dublin Event Guide on Twitter at www.twitter.com/DublinEventG

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Ornaigh G, Noel N, Serena F, Eamonn U and Gerard Ph were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I suggest the following events:

+ Merrion Square Open Day on Saturday, especially the No 29 Museum and the Archaeofest in Merrion Square
+ People’s Photography Exhibition on Saturday and Sunday
+ Family Comedy Weekend at Farmleigh House on Saturday and Sunday, but watch out for road closures in Phoenix Park
+ Dalkey Lobster Fest Live Gigs (Saturday + Sunday)
+ Roots Festival Live Gig in Harbour Bar in Bray (Saturday and Sunday)
+ Dublin Flea Market
AND there are still a number of Heritage Week Event happening.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Ice Rink for Dublin at Liffey Valley

A huge expansion of the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre has been approved and it will include an Olympic-sized indoor ice rink and a very futuristic brand new look. The retail space will be expanded by a huge 7,000 square metres and the restaurant space will be increased by 3,774 square metres.

The ice-rink has space for 2,500 spectators for skating competitions, ice hockey matches and other entertainment events. A great addition!!
And all this is meant to be completed by the end of THIS year!

Oddly, though, the planned addition of 1,800 car park spaces was NOT approved. Why you ask? The “experts” from state-organisation “Transport Infrastructure Ireland” decided that because the car parking is free (it is an OUT OF TOWN shopping centre with poor public transport to it!!!) additional car parking spaces would discourage drivers from using alternative means of transport. You really have to wonder about the intelligence of some of these “experts”.

The Gazette Newspapers reported about it here.

Summer of Heritage 2016 – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown

Last few days of this year’s “Summer of Heritage” programme in Dun Laoghaire:

The Summer of Heritage 2016 programme in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, is a series of free guided tours running for 10 weeks from 27 June – 04 September. There will be 29 events at locations like Dalkey Castle, Cabinteely House, National Maritime Museum, Monkstown Castle, Deansgrange Cemetery, Blackrock, Milltown, The Metals, Seapoint Martello Tower, Dun Laoghaire, Killiney Hill and there will also be a Maeve Binchy walking tour, a 1916 Graves tour of Deansgrange Cemetery, a 1916 Social History tour of Dún Laoghaire and a 1916 Exhibition in Marlay House.

No other part of Dublin runs such an interesting and extensive heritage programme with plenty of free guided tours, so have a look at the programme on the website here. You find a link on the same site where you can download the full booklet in PDF.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. 6 LAST MINUTE EVENT PROMOTION IDEAS
The amount of event organisers that only realise in the last few days before the event that they haven’t promoted their event well enough is staggering. Luckily Eventbrite has some good advise on how to make up for this with their “6 Last Minutes Event Promotion Ideas” blog post.

If you are regularly or occasionaly organising events, keep an eye on the Eventbrite blog. It covers a wide variety of event-related and event-relevant topics that can help you hugely! Read more here.

And if you are looking for free or non-free events, you can find them at www.eventbrite.ie

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation

30 June – 30 Sept

National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8

Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.

Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.

Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition

07 May – September (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

A Fair Land Project

10:00 – 17:00, Sat 27 Aug

Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8

A Fair Land is a project in the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s Courtyard where a pre-1916 village is built and will operate from 12-28 August.

This project will develop a system for living derived from basic and simple resources used in a creative way. Visitors will have opportunities to eat, make, think or trade and through that process to learn, copy, assimilate and teach. VATeir Fly-in 2016 – Air Traffic Control Simulation

10:00 – 18:00, Sat 27 Aug

Carlton Hotel, Old Airport Road, Dublin Airport, Co. Dublin

Occasionally I come across events where I don’t understand at all what the event is about. This is one of them!

Here is the description:

“After an absence of several years VATeir – the Irish vACC of the VATSIM network – is glad to announce its 2016 Fly-in. Taking place in the Cloud Suite of the Carlton Hotel at Dublin airport, you will be able to watch VATeir’s finest controllers in action as they control virtual pilots live on the VATSIM network, while outside you will be able to take in an unobstructed view of Dublin airport’s ramp from the outdoor balcony.”

But a bit of research reveals:
VATeir is the Irish vACC
vACC is a Virtual Area Control Centre, a type of virtual air navigation service
VATSIM stands for “Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network” and is an online flying network.

VATeir provides training for anyone wanting to become a virtual air traffic controller in Ireland and at this event virtual pilots and virtual Air Traffic Controllers cooperate and run the Irish airspace.

Admission is free for spectators. (EUR 20 for participants.)

I learned something new!! ;-)

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 27 Aug

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Dalkey Lobster Fest – GOING AHEAD!!!!

13:00, Sat 27 Aug

Dalkey (Various locations)

The Dalkey Lobster Fest was meant to take place from Fri 26 – Sun 28 August, but then suddenly at around 19:00 on Thursday evening, the Facebook Page and website are changed and the statement is added that “Dalkey Lobster Festival has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control.” Soon after, comments on Facebook appear that indicate that the festival is NOT cancelled, but certain events are cancelled.

What’s going on? – It turns out that the that the events at the Tramyard and the Kids Zone are cancelled (and the Tramyard controls the Lobster Fest website and Facebook Page). But all the other events that are not related to the Tramyard will go ahead as planned, so spread the word and don’t be put off by one businesses change of plans.

I am not sure if the Lobster Festival Parade (planned for Sunday 14:00) is cancelled or not, but that’s a minor issue.

So, all the free music performances in pubs and restaurants and the other events (e.g. Cookery Demo with wholefood chef Oliver McCabe) are definitely going ahead:

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 28 Aug

13:00, Sun 28 Aug

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

14:30 – 16:30, Sun 28 Aug

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

Please note: For 28 Aug, the 10:00 and 12:00 tours have been cancelled. The 14:30 tour will take place.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00 – 16:30, Fri 02 Sep

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

School is back, so the learning continues!? – Don’t be fooled!!

Now that the kids will soon be back in school, the parents breath a sigh of relief. Not only because now school is doing the child minding again for a large part of the day, but also because now their sons and daughters will get smarter again and learn lots of great stuff. But do they really?

If parents have the time and the energy, I would say that kids can learn a LOT more during the holidays than during the school year. Not more maths or chemistry, but more about life and about other cultures and maybe some hobbies.

In the Feel Good Slot of this Dublin Event Guide, I quoted Mitch Joel, who said “I’m not going to let school get in the way of my child’s education.” and he refers to a big big problem. The problem is that the subject in school are very very limited.

There is no classes about Emotional Intelligence, a HUGELY important area if your kids will ever be in management or in a customer facing role or have ANYTHING to do with people that might feel stressed (and which job does not have that?). There are no classes about financial or business affairs. How to save, how to invest, how to start a business, how to market a product or a service or even just how to market yourself. And there are no classes about entrepreneurship, or how to deal with bad experiences or failures (your own or others) or how to stay innovative. OR and EVEN simpler: How to remain curious throughout life.

And the things that school teaches you are taught in a way that never occurs again! You don’t have to sit in a corner or at a table and come up with all great ideas yourself because you learned them by hear in weeks of hard work? No, in life you need to work with other people, you need to get/demand/invite ideas and suggestions and contributions from others and sometimes deal with harsh critique.

Maths and languages and chemistry and biology are definitely needed and probably with the exception of Irish all the current subjects make sense, but then the parent should try to find other teachers/mentors for their children to give them a chance to discover all or at least some of the other non-school-taught subjects.

So, Mitch Joel’s opinion “I’m not going to let school get in the way of my child’s education.” makes sense!
