Hi all!

This week I am surprisingly early with the e-mail magazine. That is because I already started working on it on Monday because I will be on my yearly trip to Germany from Friday to visit family and Christmas Markets (the REAL deal!!!) ;-)

[ad]

I plan to have a great time, enjoy the Gluehwein and the good food and I hope you will also have a nice weekend! I will be back on Tuesday already, so no need to worry about the Dublin Event Guide next week, it will make it to you! :-)

And please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is about an issue that is at the root of most conflicts in our world, but also in our jobs and in our families and it is an issue that many us carry around with us that was possibly caused by ONE person making ONE silly statement many years ago´. Some have too much of it and MANY have too little of it. What is it? It is Self Worth!

And by coincidence I found a video clip from a guy called Cheski Baum, that makes the best point ever about Self Worth! Watch it!!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week only Bridget W was so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

With December being a short month as far as events are concerned, there usually is a shortage of funds at the end of the month, so please consider if you could help with a donation of any size!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

I will stick with the Christmas Markets again! The Christmas Flea Market at the Point Village, Glow at Smithfield and the market at George’s Dock. It is getting more and more Christmassy! ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Christmas Markets Website

You probably have seen it already, but in case you missed it:

I have compiled a list of all Christmas Markets in Dublin this year and you will find it at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com Have a look and tell your friends and families. It is a relatively simple website, but hopefully it is useful!

And if you click on/use the advertisement that is on that website, you will help the Dublin Event Guide!! ;-)

Dublin Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony – Video

Video Blogger “Active Spuds” has sent me a video that she made of the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in O’Connell Street and I am happy to share it with you: youtu.be/mZiTa_Awnn4

Your Christmas Present for the Dublin Event Guide?

Now that you are in the process of buying your Christmas presents, you are probably wondering what you should send the “team” that brings the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) to you every week!? Did I read your mind!?!?! :-)

Well, the biggest gift you could make is to sign up for a subscription here or to give a once-off donation also here. It will help guaranteeing the further existence of the Dublin Event Guide so that you will continue to hear about all the free events in Dublin.

Alternatively or – ideally – additionally please use the links in this newsletter to buy your Christmas presents. Go to this newsletter in your Inbox or on www.dublineventguide.com and click on the Book Depository, Amazon, Groupon, Living Social links etc before you buy (They are all in the first message in this Dublin News section!!). You will then be brought to the page you clicked on and if you complete your purchase there, then the Dublin Event Guide will get a small commission (up to 5%). You won’t have to pay more, but you help the Dublin Event Guide.

Some nice Dublin Event Guide Readers sent me an anonymous Thanks in the form of a voucher for a restaurant in town. Unfortuantely they didn’t leave any address, so I will thank them this way. THANK YOU! I think who they are. ;-) It was formerly a Google Team with one wonderful person in charge of arranging this every year. They know that me and gift vouchers have a challenged relationship and therefore I get a gift voucher from them. :-) I appreciate it a lot, EVEN if it is a voucher! :-P

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Christmas Markets in Dublin – Comprehensive List

Dublin (various locations)

To help you with your Christmas entertainment and Christmas shopping, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) has a comprehensive list of all (free) Christmas Markets in Greater Dublin for you!

The first markets start on 22 Nov and the longest run is until 03 January.

Check it out at www.dublinchristmasmarkets.com and tell all your friends!

If you are involved with any Christmas Market that is not listed there, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject XMAS and I will look at your event and include it in the list if it fits.

Christmas Kingdom Malahide

10:00 – 20:00, Fri 11 Dec

Malahide Green, Malahide, Co. Dublin

The Christmas Kingdom Market in Malahide will run until 03 January on the following dates 27-29 Nov/4-6 Dec/11-13 Dec (Fri 14:00-20:00, Sat+Sun 10:00-20:00) and then daily 18-23 Dec (10:00-20:00) and 26 Dec-03 Jan (10:00-20:00).

Visiting the Craft Village and the Food Village is free, Ice Rink and Santa Visit cost money.

Reports from the Craft & Food Village are not blowing me away. Maybe the market didn’t work out as planned because it was initially cancelled and got only saved in the last minute. Alternatively it is could be just one of these badly thought out Christmas Markets in Ireland.

The “Designer Dublin” Christmas Market will feature stalls by 30 designers and craftspeople. It will take place on Friday and Saturday on the forecourt of the Bank of Ireland at College Green (opposite Trinity College).

Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival

10:00 – 18:00, Fri 11 Dec

Dun Laoghaire (various locations)

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival is this year taking place at the new location near the Maritime Museum. It runs from Thursdays to Sundays every week until 24 Dec.

With 20 stalls selling food and crafts, it is not one of the bigger markets but nestled between the new LexIcon library and the Maritime Museum it might have a better chance to create some Christmas atmosphere than the location at “The Metals” (near the Pavilion Theatre) was able to. Admission is free.

The Maritime Museum will also be involved this year and will host some events, but it seems that none of these events are free.

The outdoor children’s amusements that comes with Christmas in Dun Laoghaire will be on Harbour Plaza.

Opening hours of the market are: Thu+Fri 17:30-20:30, Sat+Sun 10:00-18:00

www.dunlaoghaire.ie/christmas-festival/

Wilde Design Fair

10:00 – 18:30, Fri 11 Dec

Dublin Chamber of Commerce, 7 Clare Street, Dublin 2

From Thurs until Saturday 10-12 December the designer/maker-organised “Wilde Design Fair” pop-up event will showcase unique, original, Irish design-led Christmas gifts.

The event begins on Thursday 10 December. Come for a glass of mulled wine and enjoy 10 per cent off everything from 16:00-20:00. It continues on Friday from 10:00-18:30 and Saturday 10:00-17:30.

Admission is free.

I Believe Christmas Village

11:00 – 21:00, Fri 11 Dec

CHQ Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1

At George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building will be this year’s main Christmas market for Dublin. There is a Christmas Village (elsehwere you call that a Christmas Market!) and admission to it is free.

The market runs every day from 26 Nov-23 Dec (Mon-Fri: 11:00-21:00, Sat: 10:00-21:00, Sun 10:00-20:00).

The Christmas Market will be on the platform in George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building. There are also a small number of pop-up-shops and some activities in the CHQ building.

There is a lot of good, but also bad about that market. My opinion about it and other markets is here, but I would say the I Believe market is probably the best market in Dublin (the competition is not overly strong, though!), so I suggest you check it out and decide for yourself!

www.ibelieveinchristmas.ie/

Live Animal Crib

11:00 – 17:00, Fri 11 Dec

Mansion House, Dawson St, Dublin 2

The Live Animal Crib at Mansion House is a yearly Christmas feature. It will be open from 08 Dec until Christmas Eve and is brought to you in association with the Irish Farmers Association.

And just in case you are worried: The animals in the crib are brought there in the morning and brought back home in the evening, so they are looked after well.

Admission is free, but donations for the charity “Mansion House Fuel Fund” are appreciated.

Dublin Flea Christmas Market

12:00 – 19:00, Fri 11 Dec

Point Village, Dublin 1

The Christmas version of the Dublin Flea Market is much larger than the monthly market and with 120 stalls, the Dublin Food Co-op is not enough. The guys who organise the market found a venue in Dublin 8, but that fell through last minute (see Dublin News section of this Dublin Event Guide) and it looked bad for the market, but all was saved when a new venue was found on Thursday or Friday.

The market will now take place indoors in one of the buildings at the Point Village, opposite the Point Depot/3Arena. It is one of the biggest arts&Crafts market this Christmas, so don’t miss it!

Opening hours are Fri 11 Dec: 12:00-19:00 and then Sat+Sun 12+13 Dec: 11:00-18:00.

www.dublinchristmasflea.ie/

Mart Christmas Market

12:00 – 19:00, Fri 11 Dec

Old Fire Station, 190a Lower Rathmines Road, Rathmines, Dublin 6

The Mart Christmas Market will only have 10 stalls, but there will be new traders every day, so you can come a number of times and get new ideas and buy great presents every time.

Expect Art, Design, Craft, Knits/Fashion and Jewellery.

The market will run for 8 days from 11-13 December and then again from 17-21 December (from 12:00-19:00 every day).

www.mart.ie/market/

Temple Bar Christmas & Book Market

12:00 – 17:00, Fri 11 Dec

Temple Bar Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The Temple Bar Christmas & Book Market is an extension and expansion of the weekly (small) Book Market on Temple Bar Square. Craft stalls are added to the market.

It was planned to run on the three weekends 05+06/12+13/19+20 Dec, but because of the storms this weekend, the market on 05+06 Dec has been cancelled and instead moved to Thurs and Friday (10+11 Dec).

Admission is free.

www.facebook.com/events/911101888975710/

The Green Door Market

12:00 – 19:00, Fri 11 Dec

18 Newmarket, Dublin 8

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

Relatively Speaking – Guided Gallery Walking Tour

13:00, Fri 11 Dec

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The three city centre contemporary art galleries, Project Arts Centre, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and the Douglas Hyde Gallery are running their next guided walking tour that takes place across these venues on Friday. Christmas Kingdom Malahide

10:00 – 20:00, Sat 12 Dec

Design It – Exhibition

10:00 – 17:00, Sat 12 Dec

The Ark, 11a Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

“Design it” is an exhibition exploring design in a child’s world and it is part of Irish Design 2015.

The Ark have challenged five Irish designers to create new products for children, taking inspiration from iconic children’s toys, furniture and textiles. The Design It exhibition recreates each designer’s individual studio giving us a glimpse at their working practices, using their sketches, photographs and working prototypes, to reveal how they get from an initial idea to the final product.

Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival

10:00 – 18:00, Sat 12 Dec

I Believe Christmas Village

10:00 – 21:00, Sat 12 Dec

Dublin Flea Christmas Market

11:00 – 18:00, Sat 12 Dec

Winter Funderland Christmas Market

11:00 – 20:00, Sat 12 Dec

RDS, Simmonscourt Complex, Simmonscourt Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

The yearly Funderland at the RDS comes with a Christmas Market again. Don’t expect toooo much from it, though! The focus is on Funderland.

In previous years there was not much arts & crafts at all, but there were some German stalls selling food. The market opens on Sat 12 Dec and will run every day until 10 Jan, so we will find out soon how good (or not) this year’s market is.

In addition to the typical Funderland attractions (from 17 Dec), there will be an Ice Rink, Santa’s Grotto and Fosset’s Christmas Circus. It wasn’t very well promoted this year, so Funderland will probably work as well as previously (it is a decade long institution every Christmas), but the success of the other features remains to be seen.

Admission to the Christmas Market and Funderland (pay as you go) is free. Circus, Santa and Ice Rink bookings can be made via the website below.

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Christmas Kingdom Malahide

10:00 – 20:00, Sun 13 Dec

Design It – Exhibition

10:00 – 17:00, Sun 13 Dec

The Ark, 11a Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

“Design it” is an exhibition exploring design in a child’s world and it is part of Irish Design 2015.

The exhibition and a range of (non-free) events will introduce children to the process of design, illustrating how designers take an idea and then make it a reality.

Admission is free and no booking is required.

The exhibition will be open every Saturday from 7 Nov – 16 Jan (closed Sat 26 Dec) from 10:00-17:00. It will also open on Sundays 22 Nov & 6, 13, 20 Dec from 12:00-16:00.

Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival

10:00 – 18:00, Sun 13 Dec

I Believe Christmas Village

10:00 – 20:00, Sun 13 Dec

Dublin Flea Christmas Market

11:00 – 18:00, Sun 13 Dec

The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.

There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

Winter Funderland Christmas Market

11:00 – 20:00, Sun 13 Dec

TRAUMA – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 13 Dec

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

I Believe Christmas Village

11:00 – 21:00, Mon 14 Dec

Winter Funderland Christmas Market

11:00 – 20:00, Mon 14 Dec

I Believe Christmas Village

11:00 – 21:00, Wed 16 Dec

Winter Funderland Christmas Market

11:00 – 20:00, Wed 16 Dec

10:00 – 20:00, Fri 18 Dec

Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival

10:00 – 18:00, Fri 18 Dec

I Believe Christmas Village

11:00 – 21:00, Fri 18 Dec

Live Animal Crib

11:00 – 17:00, Fri 18 Dec

Mansion House, Dawson St, Dublin 2

The Live Animal Crib at Mansion House is a yearly Christmas feature. It will be open from 08 Dec until Christmas Eve and is brought to you in association with the Irish Farmers Association.

And just in case you are worried: The animals in the crib are brought there in the morning and brought back home in the evening, so they are looked after well.

Admission is free, but donations for the charity “Mansion House Fuel Fund” are appreciated.

Winter Funderland Christmas Market

11:00 – 20:00, Fri 18 Dec

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Corruption in Irish Politics? Oh yes! Like the pros!

Did you see the RTE Investigations Unit documentary on Monday night? A number of TDs and local councillors were exposed for either not declaring properties and business ownerships or for even asking and expecting payments for services provided as a public representative.

This is nothing else than corruption and it was so normal to them, that it would be extremely surprising if it hadn’t happened before.

It is shocking that public representatives in Ireland can be bought like that and you wonder if this is just the tip of the iceberg or if the ones in the documentary are the worst cases.

But even more shocking is the fact that the Fianna Fail Councillors Joe Queenan resigned from his party but did not resign from his council role in County Sligo. He knew he would get kicked out of the party, so he resigned, but he seems to think it is totally ok to stay in the council.

It is doubtful that there will be legal consequences for either of them, but if people want things to improve in Ireland, they will have to stop voting for these low lives!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm .
