Hi all!

This is the last “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” before Christmas, so it is now time to wish you a
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
And if Christmas is not your thing, then I am wishing you a “Merry *whatever_you_are_having*”! ;-)

[ad]

Yes there are events taking place before Christmas, but understandably not much at all on Christmas Day and only a few on St. Stephen’s Day. So the total is down a good bit, but well over 100 free events in Dublin in Christmas week is still amazing! If you are a longterm reader of the Dublin Event Guide, you know that there hasn’t been a single week in 7.5 years when you didn’t get the weekly e-mail magazine and I will keep it up! So, you will definitely get a Dublin Event Guide next week as well so that you know what is happening between Christmas and New Year! A lot less people will open it, but I hope it will help some of you!

If you are still looking for a high-value Christmas present for a friend or a loved one and ordering anything online is too late now and the shops don’t have the right thing. then give a subscription for the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. I should really charge at least EUR 2 for each edition, so the value is over 100 Euro! You know I don’t charge anything, but you don’t need to tell that to your friend right away! In addition: It is the thought that counts. ;-) If you want to give a subscription as a present, send a mail with your friends e-mail address to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject XMAS SUBS and I will send your friend a nice welcome message and praise you for being a great person. Can’t do any harm!!!

Last chance to join the group of passionate Dublin Event Guide subscribers who want to be a) the first to know about news about the Dublin Event Guide and b) be part of the Inner Circle of supporters, you can join that Inner Circle at www.DublinEventGuide.com/InnerCircle.htm

I am still hoping for Santa to be good to me and I continue holding my Wish List in my little hands in front of me. If there is a Santa out there, feel free to choose whatever you think is appropriate! I was really good during the whole year!! Promise! ;-)

I know it’s Christmas, but the bills don’t stop, so my two appeals have to be included this week as well:

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) only exists because you told other people about it and because a few generous people support it with donations. Keep doing exactly that, please! Tell all your friends and family and colleagues about it and – if you can – please also help with a donation.

The Sponsorship I was able to get helps hugely to take a certain amount of financial pressure off me, but it is not enough! I need to make some urgent changes to the system that I use and need someone who is good at CakePHP programming and SQL databases. That will cost! So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 53,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week’s Feel Good is about giving and it is Tony Robbins telling his story when he was 11 years of age and a generous person wanted to help his family, but his dad couldn’t accept it. Have a look at this video clip, it is just the first 3 minutes here

www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152914250464060

There are two important messages in it. Firstly it is about the giving is living. By giving you give more than you might think. The second message is about the meaning we give to events. Tony Robbins’ dad gave it the meaning that he was poor and that he failed and he therefore walked out. YOU can choose what meaning you give to events, make use of that power!!

I was at Tony Robbins’ “Unleash the Power Within” event a few years ago and it was an amazing experience that I recommend to everyone. He will be in London again this year in March and if you are still looking for a Christmas present for yourself, here is an idea: www.amiando.com/e/wxombj

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Shona F and Serena F supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend you have the last chance to enjoy the different Christmas/Craft/Festive Markets. In addition watch out for the Christ Church Christmas Festival on Saturday, and the Winter Solstice viewing opportunity in Sandymount on Saturday and Sunday morning.

On Sunday evening a Winter Solstice Festival takes place at the National Museum and Smithfield.

And from Monday we are on the home stretch to Christmas. Have a great time and Merry Christmas to you and your families!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

*****************************************************************************

The “Metro Herald” is gone…and that is BIG news!

It is already nearly 10 years when back in 2005 the free newspaper “Metro” launched in Dublin. Free daily newspapers were popular in London, but for Dublin it was a significant event. Independent News & Media (INM), the owners of the Irish Independent, immediately reacted with the launch of their own free daily newspaper “Herald AM”.

This was great for the customers and probably also for advertisement clients, but financially the competition didn’t help the two newspapers and in 2010, Metro and Herald AM were merged to the “Metro Herald” and lost in 2013 “only” EUR 280k. But the EUR 15.5 mio of accumulated losses meant that it had to come to an end at some stage. Last Monday was that day when Metro Herald announced that they will cease publication this Friday. (The many street distributors and 13 editorial staff lost their jobs.)

It is not the first and won’t be the last newspaper that will close down, so why is the news BIG? Well, Metro Herald was put together as a “quick” newspaper: Short, attention grabbing articles that can be read quickly. Lots of advertisement and daily competitions. And ensure that people will browse even to pages further back, the Metro Herald was also spreading the news about lots of events to the level that some of the free events in Dublin were only promoted by the Metro Herald (and obviously the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” ;-) ), so event organisers have lost a channel to reach a section of their potential audience and the readers have lost a source of information about events.

What needs to happen next is that LOTS of people should now join the mailing list of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, so that they at least find out about the free events. But YOU need to help them, because they might have never heard about this weekly event magazine. People can subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com

Some articles about the closure of the Metro Herald are here and here.

Trinity College is rebranding – See the shocking images!

I couldn’t resist the Buzzfeed/Upworthy type headline that you see everywhere on Facebook. (It’s called Clickbait and is meant to decrease significantly in January.)

But if you came here to see the shocking images of the new Trinty College brand, I won’t disappoint you. But maybe TCD will. Have a look at the article in TheJournal.ie from Thursday that broke the disturbing news: www.thejournal.ie/ireland-trinity-college-dublin-new-logo-development-1840428-Dec2014/

For many months the deliberations went on and you can imagine that itprobably got messy (up to 40 interest groups had to be consulted) and then the whole change is…. taking the gold-colour out of the crest and fiddling a little with the fonts. TCD, you have lost it!

What a waste of time and money!! It allegedly will cost to EUR 100k to carry out this nonsensical rebranding.

An Post Museum – Free Admission

To celebrate the 200 years since the foundation stone of the GPO was laid in 1814, the An Post Museum in the GPO, will let you in for free from 08 December until Christmas.

Have a look at look at the exhibition “Letters, Lives & Liberty” and if you come at lunch-time, you will also be able to join in with the traditional carol singing in the Public Office (or you can just listen to them).

The An Post museum is closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) would particularly like to bring to your attention. The vast majority of the events listed here will be free, but if it is a really good event, there might sometimes be a non-free event in the list as well. (It will be properly tagged!)

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Studies on Shivering

21 Nov – 24 Jan

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, 5-9 Temple Bar, Dublin 2

“Studies on Shivering” is a part of a wider project by the artist Damir O?ko (HR). In this project, the artist creates a dialogue between film, poetry, musical scores, objects and drawing to explore a central theme; the shivering body as a metaphor for resistance and unrest. The title of the film in this exhibition, “TK”, comes from the phonetic description of the sound of teeth or stones clashing together. These types of sounds create a visceral, psycho-acoustic response in the listener and the effect is one of O?ko’s central concerns.

“Studies on Shivering” combines elements such as scores, collages, architectural intervention and collaborations to extend the normal cinematic space and to create a hybrid work in which film, research and poetry are equally weighted.

Limerick Milk Market was founded in 1852, as the west of Ireland was emerging from the famines of the 1840s. In the 1970s, Limerick Milk Market was at a crossroads in its long history, as the Shannon/Limerick region began transforming into a national and international model for development.

Winter Solstice in Sandymount

08:30, Sat 20 Dec

Sean Moore Park, Beach Road, Sandymount, Dublin 4

Thousands of people hope every year that they are the lucky ones who will get a spot in the Newgrange monument to witness the sun shining through the roof box and crawling towards the centre of the tomb. For the 2014 ticket draw 30,532 (!!) applications were submitted and only a total of 100 people will be invited, 20 each day from 18-23 December.

If you are not one of the 100, you still have a chance to experience the dramatic sunrise on this important day, albeit in a somewhat less spectacular way:

In Sean Moore Park in Sandymount, a standing stone is lined up with the James Joyce monument to point to the Winter sunrise. The sun will appear from 08:38 on 21 Dec, but – like in Newgrange – you can also go there from the 18-23 Dec and still see more or less the same.

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 20 Dec

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.

Admission to the exhibition is free

Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival – Lanterns + Fireworks

16:00, Sat 20 Dec

People’s Park, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin

The final event of the Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival is a Lantern Procession, followed by Festival Fireworks.

The Lantern Procession starts at 16:00 at People’s Park and the route is Park Road, Upr. Georges Street, Marine Road, Queens Road, ending on the East Pier.

At 17:00 the Fireworks display will start. It will be seen from all points near the seafront in Dun Laoghaire, but probably the best spots are on the East Pier or on Newtownsmith Green.

Admission is free and for more information check the website below.

(Please note, that lanterns are not allowed to be proper lanterns! Which means that they can’t be “lit by a candle or made of flammable material”. Yes, the second part of that sentence doesn’t make sense at all because paper is flammable material. I guess what they are trying to say is that any fire risk has to be avoided. But an LED light in a paper Lantern would most likely be totally acceptable.)

[I remember when I grew up and we had yearly processions and us kids had long open fire torches (a stick with parafin soaked cloth wrapped around it) that had at least 40cm long flames. Nobody ever got hurt and no adult ever freaked out. Awww, good old times!]

Winter Solstice in Sandymount

08:30, Sun 21 Dec

Sean Moore Park, Beach Road, Sandymount, Dublin 4

The Winter Solstice takes place on Sunday and this is a really big event in Newgrange.

Christmas Eve

08:00, Wed 24 Dec

Dublin (various locations)

Christmas Eve in Dublin means that the shops in the City Centre are packed with last minute buyers (many many men! ;-) ) from early on. Some families have the custom to go to Bewley’s for breakfast and the queues are usually long at Bewley’s in Grafton Street, Others just get their last minute purchases before they go home. Many shops already close around 16:00 and then an eerie calm falls over the city. Some of the shopping centres push it a bit further, but even Dundrum closes already at 18:00 on Christmas eve.

In the evening there are Christmas Eve masses and the pubs are open for a last night before Christmas, but that’s it then. Now Christmas is around the corner and the famous Guinness Christmas ad ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVudFaYSjq0 ) captures the atmosphere of the late hours on Christmas eve perfectly.

Many of the regular events will not take place on Christmas eve, so please check before you go to make sure that the event you wanted to enjoy is definitely going ahead.

Christmas Day

08:00, Thu 25 Dec

Dublin (various locations)

In most families Christmas Day is very much a family day. The children are up really early because Santa (hopefully) left some presents for them during the night and the kids get up at the earliest possible time to look for them. Since adults are really just bigger kids, many also exchange presents in the morning.

If there weather is ok and you want to get some bit of exercise before the big dinner, go for a walk or even go for the traditional Christmas Swim in the (cold!) sea at the FortyFoot in Sandycove (South of Dun Laoghaire). See some pictures here and a video clip here.

Then there might be visits to friends or relatives, but then in the early (or late) afternoon the traditional Christmas dinner, usually with Turkey, ham and (often hated, but nevertheless regularly served) Brussels Sprouts, will take place in most families. Too much is eaten, too much alcohol is consumed and then some Christmas movies are “consumed”.

For visitors in Dublin, this is a horrible day and I think it’s unforgivable that the Irish Tourism Organisations don’t warn tourists: Visitors in Dublin will not find a single open restaurant (apart from restaurants in some hotels, see below), there is absolutely nothing to do on that day because all sites are closed and only because we are lucky to have a multicultural society that includes people that don’t celebrate Christmas, you will at least find a small number of Spar Shops or Centras that are open and that can sell you some food. All pubs are closed.

If you would like – or need – to have your Christmas dinner in a restaurant, you hopefully checked early: There are SOME hotel restaurants that will serve food on Christmas Day, but they might be booked out or only limit their service to residents or are very expensive. So hopefully you did your homework.

And what to do as a tourist on this day? A looooong walk and a really good book afterwards might be the best suggestion. ;-)

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Two languages for every thing or not? English vs Irish

How is your Irish? Mine is atrocious, I learned a few sentences, but that is all. Many many years ago I bought a book and a cassette tape language course to learn Irish, but then I realised that it is a bad use of my limited spare time and learned Spanish instead. I have used Spanish a good bit, but never really needed Irish.

Easy for me as a foreigner, if you are Irish and went through the school system here, you didn’t have any option and it seems to me that Ireland didn’t yet manage to sell the “coolness” of the language as Wales seems to do much more successfully.

It always intrigues me when I get my electricity or gas bill and there is a pamphlet included that is not only in English, but also in Irish, because my service-providers are part owned by the Irish state. I don’t need it and it immediately goes in the (recycling) bin, but is it a good use of resources? We all are used to laws and official forms and papers being in both languages (and the majority just ignores the Irish version), and we are also used to the fact that all major newspapers have only English versions of their publication, despite the fact that it might entice a few more people to read a news article in Irish rather then the text of a legal document. But that unbalanced co-existence is not really questioned.

It did strike me odd, however, when I found that the Taoiseach’s Christmas wishes to the nation – as published by the state run MerrionStreet.ie website – did NOT get translated. They are ONLY in Irish (headline and video context) and not a sign of an English translation. Not so much two-languaged at Christmas?

See here: www.merrionstreet.ie/en/News-Room/News/Teachtaireacht_Nollag_%C3%B3n_Taoiseach_-_Nollaig_Shona_.html
