I had a great time in Germany at the Christmas markets and visiting family. It was much too short, but nevertheless great to get there. I hadn’t made it “home” this year before last weekend, so it was high time. But it was also great after a few days to come to my other home, Dublin, again. And now it is full steam ahead to Christmas. The Christmas Markets are like mushrooms in a damp forest, they are appearing in every corner and maybe we should introduce a Christmas Market Police that makes sure that at least a minimum level of quality is upheld. ;-) The only other alternative is to spread the word quickly if a market is particularly bad so that people won’t waste their time. Maybe I will set up a sort of notice board for next year so that Christmas Market messages can be easily spread. What do you think?

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Since they started already in mid-November there could be a little bit of a Christmas Market fatigue at this stage.
There are Christmas markets left, right and centre and in many cases the goal is not to provide an amazing Christmas market experience for the visitors, with good food and nice craft stalls, but instead the only goal is to get as many traders paying a fee for their stall. Please market organisers don’t compromise on the quality of your traders, otherwise we won’t come back to your market next year.
The one-weekend-only highlight this week is the Christmas Cracker Market in Smithfield, a co-operation of the Dublin Flea Market and Block T. Check it out. More than 100 traders will be there!
If you have kids, there are plenty of Christmas related activities, check out the Farmleigh House activities, for example. And if you look for a brief rest from Christmas, then GLOW at Smithfield Plaza is the event for your family.

Music Comedy Panel Show in RTE – Free Tickets
“Hey-Ho Lets Go” is a new Comedy Music Panel Show on RTE and the Christmas Special is recorded on Tuesday 16 Dec in the evening. I got the information a few days ago and am not sure if there are still tickets available, but you could check by sending a mail to studioaudience@moondog.co.uk There will be a drinks reception for the studio audience.
The show is presented by comedy impresario Dermot Whelan, with two teams led by John Colleary and Colin Murphy.
(I am not sure who came up with the name for the show, but let’s hope that the show is better than the name suggests!)

Finally the promise of a good Christmas Market and here are the first complaints….
The Journal.ie posted an article about a complaint from the CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Adrian Cummins about the Christmas Market at Stephen’s Green.
Cummins thinks that the fast food outlets on the market are taking business away from restaurants he is probably not totally wrong, BUT that doesn’t mean that the market is bad or should not take place.
Instead it means that restaurants should get involved in the same way as many restaurants are now represented on many Farmer’s Markets in Dublin. Adrian Cummins role is to represent the restaurants but maybe he copies the Vintners organisation a bit too much who do nothing else but only complain about everything.
I totally agree with him that the Dublin Christmas Market has a very very long distance to go before it will attract any international visitors and DublinTown’s claim in this regard is a rather laughable (at least at the moment), but apart from that he is soooo wrong.
Dublin City absolutely should give food and drinks licenses to more than one main food outlet (all Gluehwein on the market is sold by one company only and the big grills are operated by the same company as well). Some more competition is absolutely needed, and that would be an opportunity for different restaurants if they are interested. In addition, nothing would stop the restaurants to make interesting (and not overpriced) Christmas offers to customers so they happily cross the street from the market to sit down in a warm and more comfortable restaurant. Think outside the box and be innovative, Mr Cummins and stop complaining all the time.

An Post Museum – Free Admission
To celebrate the 200 years since the foundation stone of the GPO was laid in 1814, the An Post Museum in the GPO, will let you in for free from 08 December until Christmas.
Have a look at look at the exhibition “Letters, Lives & Liberty” and if you come at lunch-time, you will also be able to join in with the traditional carol singing in the Public Office (or you can just listen to them).
The An Post museum is closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Portholes and Teapots is an exhibition of Sculpture, Fine Art Prints and Artists Books by Cecilia Moore and Elke Thönnes.
Artists Cecilia Moore and Elke Thönnes give audiences the chance to ponder the details of familiar places and everyday objects, to see the beauty in what is often overlooked. Cecilia Moore has dismantled metal household objects, like teapots and vases, gathered locally to re assemble and rework them into playful tactile sculptures. This body of work is accompanied by a quirky animation, detailing her design process.
Elke Thönnes has used various fine art print techniques to create a ‘love letter to Dublin. In the search for new methods to ‘read the city’, she has placed details of iconic city structures onto embossings of old maps, The tactile nature of the work is a comment on the craftsmanship and architecture of generations past.
Cecilia Moore lives in Ballymun, she trained as a silversmith and sculptor and has exhibited widely, receiving several public art commissions, she is currently on a masters programme at the National College of Art and Design. Elke Thönnes is a painter and printmaker who works at Graphic Studio Dublin. She has exhibited extensively in group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally.

Studies on Shivering

“Studies on Shivering” is a part of a wider project by the artist Damir O?ko (HR). In this project, the artist creates a dialogue between film, poetry, musical scores, objects and drawing to explore a central theme; the shivering body as a metaphor for resistance and unrest. The title of the film in this exhibition, “TK”, comes from the phonetic description of the sound of teeth or stones clashing together. These types of sounds create a visceral, psycho-acoustic response in the listener and the effect is one of O?ko’s central concerns.
“Studies on Shivering” combines elements such as scores, collages, architectural intervention and collaborations to extend the normal cinematic space and to create a hybrid work in which film, research and poetry are equally weighted.

Dawson Street doesn’t look very pretty this year due to the LUAS works there, but if you focus on the crib and ignore the street behind you you can nearly get into a Christmassy mood. ;-)
The animals don’t stay there for the whole time, but they will be brought back to the farm every evening and then back to the City Centre in the morning.

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.
25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.
But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.
An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.
If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.

The Botanic Garden’s description of this event is slightly odd. What is certain is that there will be a Christmas Market in the Botanic Gardens and there will also be a visit by Santa at 13:30.
But then it says “Enjoy a stroll through the stalls and listen out for some festive music along the way. Ticketed event – Tickets are only available on Sunday 14th December at the Visitor Centre.” and that is the odd part. I would strongly assume that visiting the market is NOT requiring you have tickets, but maybe the visit to Santa does need a ticket? (No price is mentioned.)

Christmas Kingdom is a new Christmas event by Dublin City Council.

The free element of Christmas Kindom is a Live Crib and a market area consisting of 14 stalls selling food and crafts.

Every year there is a crib with live animals outside Mansion House and this institution supported by the Irish Farmers Association is returning to Dawson Street again. It will run from 09-23 Dec.
Dawson Street doesn’t look very pretty this year due to the LUAS works there, but if you focus on the crib and ignore the street behind you you can nearly get into a Christmassy mood. ;-)
The animals don’t stay there for the whole time, but they will be brought back to the farm every evening and then back to the City Centre in the morning.
Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.
25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.
But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.
An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.
If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.

Dawson Street doesn’t look very pretty this year due to the LUAS works there, but if you focus on the crib and ignore the street behind you you can nearly get into a Christmassy mood. ;-)
The animals don’t stay there for the whole time, but they will be brought back to the farm every evening and then back to the City Centre in the morning.
Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Every year there is a crib with live animals outside Mansion House and this institution supported by the Irish Farmers Association is returning to Dawson Street again. It will run from 09-23 Dec.
Dawson Street doesn’t look very pretty this year due to the LUAS works there, but if you focus on the crib and ignore the street behind you you can nearly get into a Christmassy mood. ;-)
The animals don’t stay there for the whole time, but they will be brought back to the farm every evening and then back to the City Centre in the morning.
Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Christmas Kingdom is a new Christmas event by Dublin City Council.
There is lots of entertainment for kids, but most attractions are not free (e.g. a Christmas circus, the North Pole play area, a festive train, face painters, balloons and children entertainments.
The free element of Christmas Kindom is a Live Crib and a market area consisting of 14 stalls selling food and crafts.
Initially it will open every weekend Fri 14:00-20:00 & Sat/Sun from 10:00 to 20:00. From 19-23 Dec the market will be open daily from 10:00-20:00 and will then continue until 04 Jan.

Drink Driving in Ireland…with judges permission!
Irish judges are very very strange creatures and really seem to be soooo far removed from “right” that you wonder if “justice” is a term that should ever be mentioned in connection with the Irish court system.
Judge Sean MacBride in Monaghan District Court is seemingly one of these odd judges that bring the whole legal system into disrepute. He is certainly a controversial judge and if you do a search for his name on Google, you find the weirdest events in court to which his name is attached to.
Last week he made the inspired (NOT!) decision that a 26 year old man who was driving while drunk, caused a small accident and drove without insurance should get away with it without it with the tiny penalty of EUR 500 for careless driving.
How did it come to that? Well, in Ireland it seems to be normal to handcuff people that are arrested even if they are completely harmless. For example Paul Begley, who was sentenced to six years in prison because he declared garlic from China as apples and therefore committed tax fraud, but who seems to be a entirely un-dangerous person was handcuffed to and from his court appearances as can be seen here.
It could be seen as considerably more risky to leave a drunken person un-handcuffed because we all have heard of or even experienced how an initially harmless drunk can turn into an uncontrollable and dangerous animal. With this in mind the Garda who arrested the 26 year old in Monaghan put hand-cuffs on him when he arrested him. (His alcohol level seemingly was FIVE times higher than permitted.)
In his questionable wisdom Judge Sean MacBride decided that because hand-cuffs were put on this man, the drink driving charge should be dismissed. And in essence he indicated with that that wearing metal bracelets for a few minutes was a bigger problem than driving a car dangerously drunk and with no insurance.
The ruling was based on a Supreme Court decision that said hand cuffing a driver infringes his rights unfairly. It is the Supreme Court, sure, so lower level judges don’t want to get into trouble over it, but luckily, another judge (Judge Niall Fennelly in Cork) had more backbone in a different case than our judge in Monaghan.
