Dublin Event Guide 369: City Spectacular, Bray Summerfest, Fusion Sunday Market, Liberties Festival

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The Dublin International Track Grand Prix will take place this weekend (Sat+Sun) at the Sundrive Velodrome in Eamonn Ceannt Park. Admission is free to the event.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

“Space Invaders” is an arts festival for children, families and early childhood educator organised by Fingal County Council.

The festival consists of Performances and Workshops for Children (0-5 years) and Workshops for Early Childhood Educators. All workshops for children are free. The educators’ workshops are EUR 10.

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

The WW1 Road Show at Trinity College Dublin is part of a major retrospective to mark the centenary of World War 1. The day long programme of free events includes pop up talks, WW1 cooking demonstrations, music, theatre, lectures and family activities.

Admission is free and no booking is required.

As part of the Road Show, the Trinity Long Room Hub will host a series of informal 15 minute talks relating to current research on WW1, from 10:00-16:00, followed by a panel discussion at 16:00 about ‘debating the war and its legacies’. For a range of lectures that cover the war in more depth, you should visit the Printing House in TCD. There will be lectures there every hour from 11:00-15:00.

At “Summer Natural His-stories” Zoologist Geraldine Breen brings you on an exploration of all the wonders of the natural world on display at the Museum. Themes for these family friendly (Ages 7+) tours will change as the weeks go by to ensure you see something new each week.Two tours will take place, the first at 10:15 and the second at 11:30.

The Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden is located next to the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, and the Phoenix Café. The OPW professional gardeners are on site on the second Saturday of the month, (February to November).

Bee demonstrations will take place on 12 July and 09 August after the garden tour.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.

At the Bray Summerfest, this week Street Performances will take place with Dave Chameleon and Tony Roberts.
In addition the 90m Bray Head Slide will be used by all ticket holders (all tickets have been allocated).
On the bandstand B-Xtreme will perform Acrobatic Street Dance, Puca will be playing from 20:00-21:00 and Kila will perform from 21:30-23:30.

Sunday

At this drop-in activity explore what you might find in a Viking’s sea chest. The object handling session will include Museum replicas based on Dublin’s Viking heritage including weapons, textiles and real amber. No booking required. Located in the Learning Resource Room, first floor. Admission is free. The two sessions run from 11:00-12:00 and from 14:00-15:00.

An Open Air Record Fair will take place at the Triangle in Ranelagh and if there is heavy rain, Plan B will be to move it into the Ranelagh Arts Centre. Admission is free. Vinyl, CD, DVD and all music genres will be available.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

Of particular concern is the place to be given to international Investor-State Dispute Settlement, “ISDS”, mechanisms which allow investors to bypass national courts and challenge governments for introducing regulations that in business’ view harms their business interests or imposes extra costs due to increased regulation.

Of greatest concern, is the secrecy and urgency associated with the negotiations, excluding democratic scrutiny. Effectively, a select political elite are seeking not only to decide the future course of public, environmental and economic policies within Europe and the USA, and to set the standards for the largest trade relationship in the world that will set the standard for global trade systems.”

On SAturday a civil society consultation on the TTIP will take place, which will be an opportunity for civil society groups to come together and learn and share about the TTIP and what impacts it will bring in Ireland and internationally.

A morning’s information / briefing will run from 11:00-13:00 and will be followed by a public street theatre event to highlight key aspects of the TTIP.

This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from www.aditiyoga.org/ and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

Trade School Dublin is annoucing two new events for July where you can learn stuff in return for barter (goods that the teacher requests), not money.

On Sat 12 July, there will be two classess held at MARTcade in Rathmines and on Saturday 19 July there will be 4 classes held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s Summer Rising Festival, a public art and cultural festival open to the public.

The classes on 12 July are:

The films called up by the term often fall into well-recognised generic categories such as the romantic comedy or the melodrama, and always operate within a broader framework of gender politics. This talk, presented by Professor Diane Negra, Head of Film Studies at UCD, will survey the wide range of films made for and marketed to women and will look at some of the ways that Hollywood has conceptualised the interests and desires of its female audience.”

The Street Performance World Championship has been for many many years the best Festival in Dublin. It’s been around for a good few years and I still find people that have never heard about it. This year the festival has been renamed to City Spectacular and other elements have been added to the Street Performances, but for me the Street Performances are the great thing.

The “add-ons” are a Live Music Stage, a food village, mini zoo, Family Area and more. You can also see Mums and Dads getting pied in the face or soaked at the ‘Kid’s Court with Ray D’Arcy’. And there will be the ‘ESB Spark Your imagination’ area with educational workshops for kids and an “Outdoor Living Room”.

The festivals runs from 11-13 July.

And now back to the Street Performances:

They are full shows with a duration of approx. 40 min. All performances are free, but the performers are not paid to be there and will therefore – as it is normal on the street – also ask at this event for your donation. So bring some suitable change or notes with you. The performances are of the best you will ever see. There is a total of 13 street performers and they will repeat their shows a number of times over the weekend. From 06-15 July, a road show of Puglia, the Italian region that is the “heel of the boot”, is in Dublin.

Organised by the Puglia Tourism Agency, this Road Show has been in Vienna, Berlin, Munich, then London, Paris and now Dublin is the last stop on the tour. There will be fee activities for adults and children. From 12:00-20:00 every day until Tuesday you are invited to experience the culture, history and life style of Puglia, along with local food & wine tasting, traditional music, virtual tours of the region and fun attractions for the kids. You will also learn how to prepare homemade “taralli” and “orecchiette” pasta, how to dance the typical “Pizzica” and enjoy the fine flavours of the Puglia’s wines.

I am not sure if they have built a marquee on the George’s Dock platform or if the event maybe takes place in the CHQ building. Just have a look, I am sure you can’t miss it!

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). For this “Nepal Ireland Mountaineering & Outdoor Adventure Fair”, the Nepal Ireland Society in conjunction with the Mountaineering Council of Ireland have put together an interesting and informative program of speakers, videos, book stalls, a photographic exhibition and relevant exhibitors.

There will be Noel Hanna (Irish record holder of Everest Summits – 8 times), Frank Nugent, one of Ireland’s best known mountaineers, Irish Seven Summits duo Paul Devanney and Niall O’Byrnes plus a number of other well known figures in the industry speaking on the day.

The talks will be about High Altitude Training, Challenges and Risks, Mount Everest Tragedies, Mountainbiking, Kayaking & Rafting, etc. and the stalls will have Mountaineering & Climbing Gear & Books.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run every Saturday. It will be an Alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

The Revival Pop-Up Store at the Fumbally Exchange is is an EPA funded project that showcases and sells reused items which have been rescued and lovingly redesigned or refurbished to create beautiful, desirable, usable goods.

To raise awareness of reuse, they are running a series of free workshops in July and the first half of August. The next workshop is:

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign is running an Emergency Protest & Rally on Saturday against the recent collective punishment of the Palestinian people through Israelian airstrikes in Gaza. The protest will take place at the Spire in O’Connell Street.

Busker TV, who are promoting Street Musicians and Artists, will bring a number of live performances to the Grand Social on Saturday. Admission is free.

The Stoneybatter & Smithfield People’s History Project host their next public talk on Saturday on the subject of the planned evacuation of Dublin 1940-1944. The speaker is Peter Rigney (Industrial Officer with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions + Assistant Archivist of the Irish Railway Record Society).

Admission is free.

Secondary students from across the United States offer a final reading at the end of a 2-week-long intensive travel writing workshop. Come to the Writers’ Centre for readings in poetry and prose as the Putney Student Travel students showcase their work inspired and informed by their travels in Dublin City and the Connemara coast.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op.It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today.

The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food.

The market is held every second Sunday of the month. Admission is free.

There seem to be TWO weekly markets on Long Mile Road and both are very close to each other. One is behind Wigoders on Long Mile Road (across the road from Aldi). The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

A Strawberry Fair with Market Stalls, BBQ, Strawberries + Cream and children entertainment will be opposite St. Maurs Church near the Rush Scout Den. All proceeds will go to the Rush Scout Group. Admission is free.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. This is a a chance to explore some of the artefacts from the Museum’s collection of objects for handling with Museum Educators. A drop-in session, suitable for all ages. No booking required. Admission is free.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

House Dublin is a restaurant and bar in Leeson Street. On Sundays the Camembert Quartet is playing in their garden from 17:00-19:00. Admission is free.

This weekly Latin Music event will take place every Sunday. You will be able to dance salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia and reggeaton. Live music, food tasting and free admission, what more could you want?

Being German, I have to admit that I am thrilled that the German team has made it to the final of the Football World Cup. The semi-final (Germany vs Brazil) was epic, BUT unfortunately the World Cup finals are usually not so great. There is too much at stake, so both teams will most likely be extremely careful, which doesn’t make for a good match.

Nevertheless, I hope for a good and exciting match AND I also hope that the better team will win, no matter which of the two it will be. — Admittedly, though, I do hope that the better team will be Germany. ;-)

Rogério from the Brazilian dance project “Forró de Lampião” in Dublin tells me: Forró de Lampião is Brazilian music that has the same roots as Samba and there is a whole culture that has developed around “forro”. Every Sunday, free dance classes take place in the Grand Social (new loation!) and if you are interested, just turn up one Sunday.

“Rhythm Rocker at The Globe” is a weekly event on Sunday night in The Globe. Admission is free.

Every Sunday (except at Bank Holiday weekends), the Ragtime, Roots and Country Blues Band “Cool Hand Dukes” play in the Porterhouse near Grafton Street.

The Dublin Blues Cartel will be in Whelan’s again and will perform mostly a version of New Orleans R’n’B with a classic rock twist, sandwiched with swing, Rock’n’Roll, Soul, Funk, Blues and rap of all eras. Admission is free.

From 06-15 July, a road show of Puglia, the Italian region that is the “heel of the boot”, is in Dublin.

Organised by the Puglia Tourism Agency, this Road Show has been in Vienna, Berlin, Munich, then London, Paris and now Dublin is the last stop on the tour. There will be fee activities for adults and children. From 12:00-20:00 every day until Tuesday you are invited to experience the culture, history and life style of Puglia, along with local food & wine tasting, traditional music, virtual tours of the region and fun attractions for the kids. You will also learn how to prepare homemade “taralli” and “orecchiette” pasta, how to dance the typical “Pizzica” and enjoy the fine flavours of the Puglia’s wines.

To celebrate the launch of SCOOP’s (Support Children Out Of Poverty) Education Resource for Secondary School students, they are inviting to a screening of the documentary “A River Changes Course”.

A River Changes Course tells the story of three families living in contemporary Cambodia as they face hard choices forced by rapid development and struggle to maintain their traditional ways of life as the modern world closes in around them.

At 19:00 Guest Speakers Natasha McAvinney (SCOOP Education Officer) speaks of her experience working in the field with SCOOP’s partner organisation SCAO in Cambodia; Kate Nolan of Redress & Clean Clothes Campaign discusses their campaign for trade justice, the Garment Industry and the Clean Clothes Campaign work in Cambodia to date and Comhlamh, Ireland’s leading organisation for Development workers discuss the importance of Development Education and Overseas Volunteering.

At 19:30 a short Interactive Workshop with the following themes: Exploring the perception people have of developing countries, the development dilemma, business and philanthropy, garment factory work and agricultural education.

At 20:00 the Documentary Screening will take place.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

In the “Saura cinema series”, the Instituto Cervantes will screen “Tango” (1998) by director Carlos Saura. Admission is free. The film will be in Spanish with English subtitles.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

The Thursday Night Talk “Indigenous Education in Chiapas, Mexico” with Liam Bradshaw will take place at the Latin America Solidarity Centre.

Since the Zapatista uprising of 1994, the indigenous communities of Chiapas have embarked on the path of constructing their autonomy. A cornerstone of this has been the development of their own unique education system. This talk is a firsthand account of some of the key features of this ‘other education’, its impact on communities and its broader implications.

The book “Fountains of Dublin” by Gary Branigan will be launched by Dr Ruth McManus (Lecturer and Author, Geography Department, St Patrick’s College Drumcondra).

Refreshments will be provided. Admission is free.

The weekly European Folk Dance Workshop/Session takes place in the Tap Bar every Thursday.

Sandford Parish Church in Ranelagh is inviting to Classical Music Summer Concerts from every Friday from June to September.

STRANGE WEATHER Lightning Talks by the artists involved in the show will be hosted in the exhibition space by the curators of STRANGE WEATHER, Cat Kramer and Zack Denfeld.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live and the DJs Tommy Rash and Fukszy are on the decks until late. Admission is free.

The Daily Howl are 5-piece Folk Pop band from Wicklow with a passion for vocal harmony, a catchy chorus and infectious rhythm and the band will launch their new EP in Mother Reilly’s. Admission is free.
