Hi all!

The second week is nearly over, the number of events is increasing slightly and the outlook is quite good. The 2013 festivals are being planned and more information will emerge in coming week. It should be a busy year and I have lots of plans for it, but I won’t tell you anything YET. I need to do some groundwork first.

[ad]

Watch out for the 15 Jan! It is a key date for your future and the Feel Good Slot reveals why. In the Dublin News section I have some interesting facts about the crazy rents in Dublin which are a huge burden for shops and restaurants and which are also (one of) the reason why goods in Ireland are more expensive then in other countries. And make also sure that you get your half-price Insomina Coffee as described in Dublin News. The This is Odd today looks at Buying Irish and what it meant if other countries insisted on buying local too.

And in addition to all this, there are more than 110 events for you to enjoy! I am sure you w ill find something suitable!

A few days ago, I thought my begging for money to pay for the cost of sending the Dublin Event Guide had finally come to an end when I got a mail that said “My wife and i donated $500,000 to you. Contact allenlarge314@xyz.com” alas it was just another of the many spam messages that I get. ;-) Ah well, if there is some one out there somewhere that has a bit of money, doesn’t even have to be half a million, I will be happy with a lot less but I need EUR 170 per month. How about just EUR 1 per month? Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm to help. Thanks!

And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the links in the Dublin News section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute.com etc) that you find in this e-zine/newsletter, you help the Dublin Event Guide because the trader gives a small commission to the advertiser (i.e. the Dublin Event Guide). Use these links as often as possible!

Did I ask you to tell your friends and family about the Dublin Event Guide and to get them to subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com and to also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide ? :-)

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.

Did you know that research shows that on 15 January already 95% of the people who made a New Years Resolution have already broken it by that date. How are you doing? ;-)

Check out this video to learn more about Goal Setting and to get a bit of a boost with your goals/resolutions. Coach and Motivational Speaker extraordinaire Tony Robbins talks about that here www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H2uNIChYtQ and gives invaluable advise. If you like it, look for part 2, 3 and 4 of it on You Tube and if you are interested in attending the “Unleash the Power Within”, Tony Robbins’ key training programme, in May in London (not free), check this www.amiando.com/e/mulxjp

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week James R, Alma R and Therese O’R were so wonderful to help with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down

There are a few more events this week and I see a definite increase in number and quality of events, but it is still early days. The start of the year is the slowest time of the whole year. Before Christmas I listed more than 180 events and currently it is just above 110, so you see a dramatic difference, but that is not necessarily a terrible thing. It just gives you a chance to properly focus on the things that are on instead of having to worry that you miss out on some events.

This week I suggest you go to the GAME exhibition in the Science Gallery if you haven’t been yet. It is the last week of GAME! In addition there is the Fusion Sunday World Market on Sunday, which is always interesting. Then there is a bit more a unique event on Sunday morning: Check out the Bird Market just out of curiosity.

And if you want some more recommendations then check out the regular events like the Saucy Sunday and Sunday Roast and Comedy Crunch (Sun + Mon), the Grand Folk Club in Tuesday and Inn Jokes on Wednesday.

Who said there are less events? ;-)

Too many changes in shops & restaurants + Korky’s Grafton Street closed

There is a massive level of instability in the shop/restaurant landscape in Dublin. Constant closures and re-openings, followed by more closures often in the same premises clearly shows that shops & restaurants experience very tough times. And the biggest factor in all this is the rent that has to be paid for the premises. While a business owner could try to increase sales or reduce the running cost, one thing that is crippling nearly all shops is the horrendously high cost of rent.

A quite well-known victim of the crazy rent situation is the shoe shop “Korky’s” in Grafton Street. John Corcoran decided to close the shop in 47 Grafton Street on 08 Jan (but to continue his shops in Henry Street and in the Ilac Centre). Korky’s was in Grafton Street since 1992, but in 2005 his rent for the 100 sqm shop increased from EUR 210k to EUR 445k. That is a cost of EUR 1219 per day (!!). I don’t know how much Korky’s shoes cost, but if we assume they are on average maybe EUR 70 and of that approx. 50% is the margin, then Korky’s would have to sell 35 pairs of shoes just to cover the rent. Staff cost, light, heating, insruances and a profit for the shop owner are not even considered.

The owner of the building is Canada Life and the dispute that John Corcoran had with Canada Life was instrumental to the banning of upwards-only rent reviews. But this ban only applies to new contracts. Korky’s lost their battle. Thanks Canada Life! :-(

www.independent.ie/national-news/shoe-shop-korkys-loses-eightyear-battle-against-rising-rents-3347249.html

It will be interesting to see who will move in after Korky’s and is prepared to pay crazy rents like that.

Free Art Workshops exploring Gender Equality and Women Empowerment

A group of volunteers are organising art workshops focusing on Gender Equality and Empowering Women. The workshops are free and open to any adult interested in getting involved with making two group paintings which will be part of a larger exhibition later.

The workshops will include discussion, writing captions, reflecting on images of women in various settings, and creating two paintings. You don’t need to be a talented artist to participate, everybody is welcome! The workshops will take place from 18:00-20:00 on 24-31 Jan and 07 Feb in the Irish Aid Centre, 31 O’Connell Street Upper, Dublin 1.
Only a limited number of spaces are available and if you are interested in attending any of the workshops book your place via genderequalityartworkshop@gmail.com

Half-price Insomnia Evening Coffee

Drinkaware.ie and Insomnia are offering you half-price coffees (and other hote beverages). If you go to drinkaware.ie/index.php?sid=12&pid=593 you will find a voucher for a 50% off any hot beverage in Insomnia High Street and Insomina Barrista (in Spar & Eurospar) every afternoon/evening after 16:00 from now until 31 January. Drinkaware.ie claims that this is meant to “help you pace your drinking”. I am not sure how that is meant to help, but also hope that you are not all out to drink every evening in January after 16:00. Just enjoy the coffee discount! :-)
The participating shops are here www.insomnia.ie/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/participating-stores1.pdf

Opportunities

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Coder Dojo

13:00 – 16:00, Sat 12 Jan

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The first Coder Dojo after the Christmas Break will take place and it is a good reason to mention it again. But maybe you have kids or friends or similar in that age group, then you should tell them about the Coder Dojo.

A Coder Dojo is a place where kids can hang out with other kids that share their interest for all things Internet, programming/coding and technologies like HTML, PHP or Phyton. It is a place for sharing and learning and creating things. For more details visit www.coderdojo.com/ Participants need to bring a Laptop and eat lunch before they come to the Coder Dojo. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent.

Participation is free, but booking is required on the website.

Bird Market

10:00 – 12:00, Sun 13 Jan

Peter Street, Dublin 8

Years and years I live in Dublin and for five years I am tracking and searching for events and still it happens regularly that I find out about some long established regular happening that I had never heard about before. It is just great that there are soooo many facets and aspects to Dublin!

The latest revelation comes from Maria G, who told me about the Bird Market. Thanks Maria!

Every Sunday morning a bunch of Bird enthusiasts come together with cages full of birds and show and sell their birds in Peter Street, between St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Aungier Street. I am not exactly sure what the times are, but found a reference to 10:00-12:00 plus minus a bit. ;-) As far as I know, there is no website or facebook page, but there is a You Tube video that gives you an impression. www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTYwwfUR1os Birds and Music! :-)

Everybody is welcome to join the event.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

14:00, Sun 13 Jan

Dublin (various locations)

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Is Buying Irish really a good thing?

Schools, Parents, Shops, Farming Organisations and even TV Programmes tell us to “Buy Irish” and there are websites and in some shops hundreds of tags that identify Irish products so that you can choose them over the non-Irish products. If Ireland was completely self-sufficient and was able to provide all goods from within the country and was not exporting anything, this would make a lot of sense. The environmental impact of transporting Green Beans from Kenia to Ireland or of bringing apples from Spain to Ireland also is another strong argument in favour of local shopping.

But is it really a good thing when you consider everything? “Everything” in this case means that you consider the Irish exports and you assume that if people in Ireland should buy local goods over imported ones, then this should apply to all other people in other countries too. Right? Nothing else would make sense!

But consider this: The Irish Dairy Board is exporting butter to the value of EUR 1bn (!!). (www.rte.ie/news/2012/1114/irish-dairy-board-wins-tesco-butter-deal-business.html) That is a LOT of money. And hear that: In 2010 it was announced that Kerrygold exported Irish butter to Germany alone to the value of EUR 175m in one year. That is EUR 5m more than the whole Gathering is expected to bring in. (The Kerrygold share of the German butter market was 13.5%!). www.farmersjournal.ie/site/farming-Kerrygold-break-sales-record-12256.html Now imagine if the Kerrygold buyers in other countries would buy local goods in the same way as you are meant to buy Irish goods? And imagine if they found out (and this was used by the local competitors against Irish goods) that people in Ireland use local products over the imported products from these countries? This would mean a MASSIVE loss of exports. Do the “Buy Irish” proponents consider that? Most likely not! Odd!

So what are we meant to do? I’d say buy the best quality product or the best priced product and buy it from whereever it comes from. And IN CASE you have a slight preference for Irish goods, then don’t tell anybody about it, especially when you are on holidays abroad. ;-)

–Advertisement————————————

If you had expected a straight run into spring time, then the colder temperatures most likely reminded you that winter is far from over. And it is only the start of a much colder period than the unusually warm weeks after Christmas. So, don’t pack the wolly jumpers away yet. Until mid-March it could still snow! ;-) So indoor events is a good thing for another while, but I can’t wait until the outdoor festivals start again.

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg
