Hi all!

There was Christmas, New Year and now we all have just blinked and we are already in the middle of January. Do you too feel that time is flying like mad? My goals list for 2012 is getting fuller and fuller (I don’t do New Year’s resolutions, but add Goals continually to the list when they come up.) and it looks like an exciting new year.

[ad]

Events are ramping up as well now that the first two weeks of the year are over. Last Monday I was a guest on Orla Barry’s radio show “The Green Room” on Newstalk106-108 and we established that the last two weeks are definitely the quietest of the year, but this coming week already sees a big improvement. By the way, if you want to hear the interview, The Green Room will be repeated on Sunday morning from 07:00-09:00 and you will hear the interview with me in the last 20 minutes, so approx. from 08:40. Ohh, and if you work in the world of media and you would like to let your audience know more about the Dublin Event Guide, contact me. ;-)

It is my mission to let as many people as possible know about all the free events in Dublin, so in 2012 we need to grow our Dublin Event Guide Community by a minimum of 3000, but my preference would be to reach 15,000 readers by the end of the year. I have NO idea how to manage that, but with your help, it will work. Are you on board? Spread the word! Tell your family, your friends and colleagues or print this poster and hang it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc. www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
People can subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” in the menu on the left.)

———
We are more than 7300 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide but it would be great to grow the community there even more. Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
You know by now that I think setting Goals is an important thing for us to define our path and stay on track, but did you know that research shows that on 15 January already 95% of the people who made a New Years Resolution have already broken it by that date. Wow! How are you doing? ;-)
Tony Robbins talks about that and about Goal Setting and – for a while – this is my last Goal Setting reminder. ;-) www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H2uNIChYtQ
Have a look at this video and watch out for part 2, 3 and 4 of it on You Tube.
You might remember that Anthony Robbins will be in London soon and if you like what he is talking about and want to go to his seminar, check this out: www.amiando.com/e/gtetvj

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Donna M contributed to the Dublin Event Guide and her contribution is HUGELY appreciated. The donations are important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about or if it even helped you to save money…and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

To join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost. – To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more.

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. All I need from you is to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!?

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here every time you want to purchases something, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Lots of interesting events this week! Some really interesting lectures, but my challenge of finding a solution for BI-LOCATION still remains! ;-)

This weekend, there are a few must go events: The Ferocious Mingle Market (see Dublin News) is open again and bigger and better, the Science Gallery exhibition “Surface Tension” about our water is coming to an end and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should definitely go! For film enthusiasts the talk about Steve Spielberg on Sunday might be for you. I will do the Mingle Market and maybe the Dalkey Health Fair.

On Monday I like the idea of the Hep Cat Club, a Swing dance class and social dance afterwards. But I am an awful dancer (No Latin blood in my veins!), so I will recommend it but it is safer if I won’t go. ;-)
On Tuesday have a look at the National Symphony Orchestra lunch time concert if you have time midday.
On Wednesday I would like to go to the Poverty and Equality conference, but I will have to work at that time. The Inn Jokes in the evening have the best possible line-up. Check it out!

Then Thursday: Every Thursday I write the Event Guide from around 20:00 for up to 20 hours through the night, but every Thursday there are interesting events that I miss. :-/ This week there are THREE talks that look really interesting. I can’t go to any of them. One is about Louis XIV and censorship during his time. Even more interesting is the closing event at the Science Gallery exhibition and the other one that I would like to go to is the talk about Elites and the Crisis. Not everybody’s cup of tea, but I am fascinated by events like that. ;-)

______Competition______________

This week there are no competitions, but I will have more for you in the coming weeks. If you know anybody who wants to promote a product or a non-free event, just suggest to them to contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com

I am working at the moment on a few Competitions, so watch this space. This popular slot should be back “in business” next week! :-)

FEROCIOUS MINGLE MARKET RE-OPENED
The Ferocious Mingle Market took place once a month in the Dublin Food Co-op for about 1 year. It was Dublin’s first and only Fancy Dress market. The organisers had bigger plans and took a break to re-group and just before Christmas (a little under the radar!) the launched their new venture. The Ferocious Mingle Market is back and bigger, better and more wonderful than ever before. ;-)
EVERY Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday the market takes place in a new fixed and permanent venue in 72 Thomas Street (between the Vicar St venue & Cafe Notto). It is an indoor market, so even Irish weather won’t be able to interfere! Opening times are 11:00-18:00 and the Fancy Dress Market will continue on every Sunday. (The rest of the week is normal dress.) There is also a Café, the Oscar Verne Café open for business at the market. A near-Permanent flea market for Dublin, I like it! Give it a try! The facebook page of the Ferocious Mingle Market is here www.facebook.com/mingle.mkt

PETE THE DOG – MISSING IN DUNDRUM/MARLAY!?
A friend and supporter of the Dublin Event Guide, who provided some prices in the past for a number of competitions contacted me during the week asking for help:
Pete, his lovely dog, who only last year was rescued by the DSPCA and then found a new home with Tom and Lina has gone missing. He was last seen in the Marlay Park area, but nearly 2 days have passed since Pete disappeared, so he could have moved on. Tom and Linda asked if I could mention their Facebook page, with which they try to find Pete again to all of you and if you find Pete, there is even a reward! Check out www.facebook.com/pages/Help-find-Pete/207441199345950?sk=wall

Free WIFI IN LONDON, BUT NOT DUBLIN
For many years (and by now: many year ago) it was discussed if a free Wifi service should be installed in Dublin. Allegedly Dublin City even tendered for a Wifi solution in 2007: www.mulley.net/2007/01/30/city-wide-free-wifi-for-dublin/
But in the end it turned into nothing because Dublin City decided that free Wifi was illegal (based on EU law) …and to expensive: www.rte.ie/news/2008/0109/wifi.html
None of these concerns apply to London where a “Landmark deal creates Europe’s largest free wifi zone”. O2 will provide a free Wifi service in Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. The roll-out will start this month and will be finished by early summer. Maybe Dublin City should talk to the mobile phone companies in Ireland?

BAD NEWS FOR BURGLARS
Many of you know that I teach Self-Defence at www.KravMagaIreland.com/ and in the context of defending yourself and your property, a new law is a welcome clarification:
The Criminal Law, Defence and Dwelling Act 2011 says that residents in a house or apartment are allowed to use reasonable force to protect people in the residence from assault, to prevent the commission of a crime and to protect the property. A person who uses reasonable force cannot be sued for damages by a burglar and will not be guilty of an offence.
By the way: This only applies when you are in a house or apartment, not if an attack happens on the street. On the street a court still would have to assess if the force was used in self-defence or not.
Importantly, I am not reporting this here to invite people to defend themselves with force. The reason why I include it is because during our training at Krav Maga Ireland (www.KravMagaIreland.com), we regularly encounter lots of questions about the legal status of self-defence and this new law brings clarity at least in one aspect.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

THE HORSE SHOW – ROYAL HIBERNIAN ACADEMY
12 Jan – 25 March: Royal Hibernian Academy, Ely Place, Dublin 2
Art History is full of horses, but cars have replaced horses, and once central to our lives, horses are now confined to leisure and pleasure, but what do contemporary artists make of the horse? Many say horses are one of the most difficult of subjects, because it is so easy to over-sentimentalise, although in this exhibition, which features Irish and international artists Robert Armstrong, Katherine Boucher Beug, John Byrne, David Chancellor, Peter Curling, Conor Fallon, Anita Groener, Tim Flach, Maïder Fortuné, Nevan Lahart, Paddy Lennon, Nick Miller, Janet Mullarney, Perry Ogden, Michael Quane RHA, Simon Reilly, Dermot Seymour, Max Streicher and Hazel Walker, the results are anything but sentimental. The Horse Show rediscovers our passion for this astonishing animal. www.royalhibernianacademy.ie/html/exhibitions/horseshow_12.html

CHRIST CHURCH RESTORED – EXHIBITION – ARCHITECTURAL ARCHIVE
11 Jan – 29 Feb: 12:00-17:00 – Irish Architectural Archive, 45 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. – “Christ Church Restored: An exhibition marking the 1870s restoration of Christ Church Cathedral” is taking place in the Irish Architectural Archive.
Cathedral restorations are often an outcome of concerns for the state of the fabric and this has certainly been the case at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. The collapse of Christ Church’s nave vault in 1562 required some remedial work and then sometime in the 18th century a long nave-length buttress was added to support the north nave wall and arcade. But in 1829 a sudden alarm during a mass forced the authorities to close the cathedral and to undertake extensive repairs from 1871 to 1878. The exhibition explains the context and outlines the achievement of this restoration. www.iarc.ie/exhibitions/index

SURFACE TENSION – SCIENCE GALLERY
21 Oct – 20 Jan: Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
This is your last chance to visit the current exhibition in the Science Gallery. The topic is “water” and the title is “Surface Tension – The Future of Water”.
“The future of water is the subject of tension. Water is both disposable and sacred, a muse for artists and a necessity for life – a source of healing and of conflict. The earth has abundant water, but only a very small proportion is available for human use. How should this be managed and sustained and what would a water-scarce future look like?
SURFACE TENSION brings together work by artists, designers, engineers and scientists to explore the future of water, playing on its physical properties, its role in politics and economics, and ways in which it may be harnessed, cleaned, and distributed. Like every single Science Gallery exhibition it is well worth a visit. Quite a number of fascinating and intriguing exhibits and elements and the great thing is that admission is free. Only 7 days until the exhibition closes, but the Opening Hours are very friendly, so you definitely will have an opportunity to see the exhibition: Mon: closed, Tues-Fri: 12:00-20:00, Sat-Sun: 12:00-18:00. www.sciencegallery.ie

FIRST FORTNIGHT FESTIVAL
First Fortnight is a sequence of events and you might wonder why I don’t include the First Fortnight events in the normal day-by-day section of the Event Guide. Well, the reason is because the website is unfortunately quite confusing and anything but clear, so it took me ages to get my head around what they are doing. And then I found out that many of the events are not free, but the event is definitely worth a mentioning and some events are free, so for that reason, I decided to put it in the Dublin News.
First Fortnight is running from 04-14 Jan and is an arts festival dedicated to promoting mental-health awareness. It offers music, film, theatre and exhibitions and festival is being staged in association with See Change, an organisation that fights against discrimination due to mental health issues. First Fortnight is so named because the first two weeks of the year is a period that is generally perceived to be a particularly difficult time for people who suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts.
The festival is intended to create awareness and to get people to accept mental health issues as normal issues.
The main event will be a concert with Cashier No 9, Le Galaxie and Royseven on Sat 14 Jan in the Button Factory. Tickets are EUR 10.
In addition there are a number of “Therapy Sessions” which take place in the Workman’s Club on 04, 06 and 11 Jan. The sessions feature a mix of poetry and spoken word performances accompanied by live music. Tickets are EUR 5.
Then there is theatre in the Project Arts Centre and finally there are some free events.
The free events are a number of exhibitions in the Exchange Dublin in Temple Bar and a “Soapbox Session”. The exhibitions are visual art and photography exhibitions from Sinead McDonald, Lemah42, William Hamilton and Mary A Kelly from 04-14 Jan. The Soapbox Sessions is an afternoon of talks on Sat 14 Jan from 14:30 in the Button Factory. Claire Byrne will host a gathering of well-known voices from Irish cultural and political life to share their ideas and bring their personal interpretation of the subject to life through performance, prose, music and all important debate. The Soapbox Session is also a free event. Seemingly you don’t need to get tickets for the free events.
(BTW: My wish from the organisers for next year is a website that is easier to navigate and a PDF that summarises all events!) www.firstfortnight.com

The impetus for the discussion stems from First Love, an artwork by Neuenschwander which involves a forensic artist recreating an image of the face of a visitor’s loved one, who’s been lost in the past. IRISH PASSPORT CONTROL
Before Christmas I went to Germany for a long weekend and on arrival in Germany experienced the quite normal procedure at the passport control that most passports will get scanned and the result of a search in the passport database determines if you can go on or not. Strangely it always feels uncomfortable even if you know that there are NO problems with your passport.
A few days later I arrived back in Dublin and experienced a completely different procedure. Passport scanners don’t seem to be available and for many years the gardai at the passport control in Dublin Airport waved nearly everyone through as long as you could at least show a (closed) passport.
However, for the last two or three year EVERY single passport is looked at. But what for? Will the garda recognise the name of the arriving criminal when taking a brief look at the passport? Or is he/she just checking the validity date? In that case maybe somebody should point out to them that most criminals with fake passport would make sure their fake document is not yet expired. So what is it the passport controllers really check at this odd and anything but thorough check?
Well, the whole “checking of passports” by looking at them for about 1 second or less, started in 2009 when the gardai of the National Immigration Bureau were protesting against a salary cut. So it is a kind of go-slow protest that has not changed since January 2009! Read about it here www.independent.ie/national-news/lengthy-delays-at-airport-blamed-on-garda-cuts-1596459.html Yes, they are certainly in their right to check the passports, but either do it properly (Promise! I wouldn’t complain! :-) ) or just give up this nonsensical sub-second “check”.

Today is Friday the 13th and I am wishing you a particularly good day. I know some are superstitious, but I am born on a Fri 13th and it definitely didn’t bring me any bad luck. (Though, I accept that others MIGHT feel different about that fateful Friday 13th on which I was born. ;-) ). So have a great day and a brilliant week as well!

Take care,
