This week I am super late, so I will not write much here in the introduction. I rather get the mail out to you. Over the coming weeks I will TRY to bring the sending time forward again, but the events are getting more and more and it is a serious challenge.

This weekend I will go to the Calcutta Run BBQ and maybe the O La Go La Mental Birthday (of a Mental Health Organisation). The Headphone Disco (tickets required) and the Barretstown Fun Run Family Day are other interesting events.

On Sun I might go to the Iveagh Garden Family Day. I love the Iveagh Garden. On Wed the Better Fashion Week sounds interesting – as long as you are interested in fashion. Only a few events are free, but better few than nothing. Refresh Dublin in the Science Gallery is definitely worth a visit and the Inn Jokes in Kilmainham as well.
Then on Thursday the Love the City Spectacle and the amazing Art Giveaway in the Mad Art Gallery (check it out!) are cool events.

One of the mail events of the Dublin City Soul Festival will be the Soul Jam for the Musical Youth Foundation, a gig starring Mirenda Rosenberg (USA) & the Rare Groove Funk Orchestra. This gig will be a treat and it will take place in the Workman’s Club, 10 Wellington Quay on Sat 28 May from 20:00-23:00. I will definitely be there and hopefully some of you will make it too! EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP IN HAIR & BEAUTY – RDS
On 29+30 May 2011 the IHF (Irish Hairdressers Federation) in conjunction with the OMC (Organisation Mondial Coiffure) will host the OMC European Championships 2011. Visitors to the two day event will see some of the Worlds leading hair & beauty experts demonstrating key trends and sculpting, teasing and styling hair into stunning works of art. It is a unique opportunity for visitors to watch the Worlds most creative battle it out for the title of OMC European Cup Champion 2011. More than 5000 hair and beauty experts from over 40 countries are expected at the event. In addition, visitors will be wowed by spectacular body painting from world class artist’s competing for top class honours. Make-up artists and nail technicians will also compete for titles within bridal, editorial and fantasy categories. As part of the event, the Irish Hairdressers Federation will host their annual National Hairdressing Championship 2011, showcasing the best of Irish hairdressing to a global audience. The hairdressing/beauty industry in Ireland employs over 25,000 hairdressers and approximately 12,000 in the beauty industry!

DUBLIN CITY SOUL FESTIVAL
Did you know that the Soul Festival is not just the Soul Picnic on the Sunday, but this year starts the outdoor events on the Saturday with the Rising Stars @ Merrion Square. But even these two big events are only a fraction of all the events that take place. There is a Gospel Brunch in the Church Pub in Jervis Street where “my” Gardiner Street Gospel Choir will sing on Sunday (and the Maynooth Gospel Choir will be there on Saturday). And there will be the Soul Jam in the Workman’s Club. (You can still enter the competition for tickets for this event a bit further down!). And even that is by far not all yet. I will tell you more next week and if you can’t wait check out www.soul.ie where you find all about the upcoming Dublin City Soul Festival (26-29 May).

QUEEN – EXPECT MAYHEM IN DUBLIN FROM SUNDAY
It is not the protesters that I expect will cause the mayhem and chaos, it will be the Garda and the “Security Forces” that will make us look forward to the day when both Queen and Barack Obama are gone again.
From Sunday (!!!!) parking will be prohibited in large parts of the City. Sure the Queen only arrives in Tuesday, but in their wisdom the Garda have decided to make life difficult well in advance. About 50 streets are affected in Dublin. And when she is here, expect sudden and odd street closures for arbitrary amounts of time. It was even announced that “between 17-20 May, the N7, N4, M50, Phoenix Park and the north and south quays in Dublin – along with adjacent bridges and streets – will be temporarily closed at certain times.” Can you imagine what that means? Ohh, and you can get searched randomly as well if you are in the area.
The Zoo will be closed, Farmleigh House will be closed, there is no parking allowed in Phoenix Park from Sun 15 may for 10 (!!) days until 25 May. And the Science Gallery will be closed as well, so expect MANY more buildings, streets and areas to be closed. For a description of the full madness that is about to unfold check jrnl.ie/135260 and

OBAMA SPEECH IN COLLEGE GREEN!?
Interestingly I found out that the security forces were never told that Obama might be in Croke Park, this suggests that only the media speculated about it (www.sbpost.ie/news/croke-park-rally-planned-for-obama-55656.html), but the organisers never seriously considered it. The security forces were only told about O’Connell Street or College Green. Was that maybe done on purpose to side track potential troublemakers? Details of the visit are still not available, but they better release it soon if they expect people to come.

MATCHBOX THEATRE CLOSING + LE CAFÉ DES IRLANDAIS
It only opened at the beginning of the year and is already closing again. The Matchbox Theatre, this small but perfectly formed little theatre in the basement of “Le Café Des Irlandais” in South Great George’s Street is closing because the “Le Café des Irlandais” is already closing after less than 8 months. The restaurant did a good few things right (low-ish priced main courses, good food, niche food choices), but there were many things that went wrong. The atmosphere was always one of “inexperience” and the two times I was there, they didn’t have the food I wanted despite the fact that it was one of the headline choices. Pity that they are gone, but it is not a MASSIVE surprise. The news from the Matchbox Theatre is that they are looking for a new venue and if you have any suggestions, let me know and I will forward your suggestions to the management of the Theatre. Closing date is Sun 15 May but the business and the theatre will continue until then. matchboxtheatre.ie/

DISNEY STORE TO OPEN IN GRAFTON STREET
The brand new Disney Store for Dublin in 60-61 Grafton Street will open on Wed 18 May at 11:00. One could speculate that the purpose of the Queen’s visit in Ireland is to open the store, but maybe that is just a speculation. ;-) Expect some magic and glitter and maybe even child friendly fireworks for the opening … and as always, you heard it in the Dublin Event Guide first! ;-) The website www.disney.ie diverts to the UK site and there is no additional information, but some details I got say that the store will be 2 storeys and will be “featuring groundbreaking technology, interactive storytelling and Disney Store exclusive merchandise […]. Key features of the Dublin store will include the Disney Store Theatre, where children can choose from over 50 clips to be watched on a giant screen as well as take part in free daily events, and the magic mirrors in the Disney Princess Castle, where each of the Princesses are brought to life.”

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL
Everything is happening next week! Not only the Queen will cause chaos, in addition 25,000 football fans will come to Dublin to watch the UEFA Europe League Final on Wed 18 May. The two teams in the final are ironically BOTH Portuguese (FC Porto will play against SC Braga). The venue will be the Aviva stadium and many of the fans might come on the same day and on the same route as the Queen (from the airport to the City Centre). SECOND BURIAL AT LE BLANC – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
05 May – 25 June: 11:00-20:00 – Project Arts Centre, 39 East Ess ex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 – Sarah Browne’s exhibition will run in the Gallery at Project Arts Centre from 5 May to 25 June 2011. It is the film installation “Second Burial at Le Blanc”, which focuses on the small French town of Le Blanc, where a coalition of local artisans and shopkeepers have created one of the last refuges for indigenous currencies. Le Blanc is still accepting the franc as payment for goods and services in certain shops although it is technically no longer legal tender, and will continue to accept it until 17 February 2012 a deadline imposed by the Banque de France.

This national arts festival celebrates creativity in the older age (approx. 50+) and hundreds of events are taking place across the country. YOGA IN THE PARK – PHOENIX PARK
Throughout the summer last year Fiona Moloney was running weekly Yoga classes to raise money for The Dublin Simon Community. It was a successful effort with EUR 1,600 being raised for homeless people in Dublin. This Saturday, the Yoga in the Park class will be back and this time Fiona is getting support from Tine Schnell.
So starting from Sat 07 May and running each Saturday at 11:00-12:00 until September, Fiona and Tine will be taking turns to lead the classes. Tine will take the first class and she will meet people for outdoors yoga practice at the Bandstand which is near the Zoo and near the Tea Rooms (for Coffee and Cake afterwards). Classes will be suitable for all levels and are donation based. That means you can give what you can afford, but please be fair. Fiona and Tine are doing a great job for the Simon Community and they need your support.

CALCUTTA RUN – 10 KM RUN PHOENIX PARK
The Calcutta Run is a 10km run that is organised by the legal profession and starts and ends at the Law Society Building on Blackhall Place. The main part of the Calcutta Run will take place in the Phoenix Park (there will be road closures from 14:00-16:00). Registration for the charity run (i.e. NOT free) is from 12:00-13:30. Between 19 and 27 May the demonstration “Fabergé – Decorated Real Eggshells” with May Deane will take place in a variety of libraries. On Thurs 19 May, the event will be in the Central Library. (All other dates are on the website.) – May Deane first discovered the art of egg decorating in 1985 and became an enthusiastic egg decorator, using domestic eggshells from the humble cockatiel to the largest egg, namely Ostrich. All her decorated eggs are created on the theme of the Russian goldsmith Peter Carl Fabergé whose egg shaped treasures have been an inspiration to egg decorators all over the world. An exhibition of her work will be on display in the Central Library from 17 –31 May.

A film screening and discussion for 3 films about soccer, migration and youth identities. In the last few years football has attracted the interest of a growing number of documentary filmmakers, who through the observation of sport practices often address a variety of social issues, including migrants’ life trajectories, human rights and youth identities.
The opening film of the Football on Screen series “Football Under Cover” celebrates women’s football in 2008, the year of the sixth Women’s World Football Cup, which this year takes place in Germany from 26 June. The following two films “The Champions” and “HalfTime”, are part of a unique long-term film project whose aim is to follow a small group of young players of different ethnic background and origin trying to make a career in professional football. OFFENSIVE IMMUNE DEFENCES – LECTURE – RDS

Over the last decade immunologists have discovered how the immune system senses the presence of an infection. Several families of genes have been identified which recognise foreign substances present on bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that are not present on, or in, our own cells. By sensing these foreign molecules the immune system gets started and, if successful, will eliminate the infection from the body.
Dr Kate A. Fitzgerald, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts is a leading researcher in the field of innate immunology and the role it plays in a range of autoimmune diseases. Dr Fitzgerald’s talk will illustrate what happens when the body’s own defences turn offensive and attack its own cells. This enhanced insight into the reaction of the immune system to infection is significantly influencing our understanding of autoimmune diseases.
Dr Fitzgerald is the recipient of the 2011 Irish Society for Immunology Public Lecture Award. The Award will be presented at the beginning of the lecture which is part of an annual RDS Irish Times lecture programme organised in association with the Irish Society for Immunology.

MEDIEVAL DUBLIN SYMPOSIUM – TCD
Sat 21 May: 09:30-17:30 – Robert Emmet Theatre (Room 2037), Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin. – The 13th Medieval Dublin Symposium organised by the Friends of Medieval Dublin will take place on 21 May. The symposium is a one day event exploring different aspects of medieval Dublin, both archaeological and historical. The archaeological papers include accounts of excavations at Thomas St, Cork St and Chapelizod, as well as the archaeology of St Mary’s Abbey. The historical lectures explore the connections between Bristol and Dublin, the medieval manuscripts to be found in the library of Trinity College Dublin and the sheriffs of county Dublin. You don’t need to pre-book, but you might want to pre-plan your visit.

UNFAIR RESTAURATEURS PICK THE WRONG TARGET
An article during the week reported that the Small Firms Association asked the Government to allow small businesses to be exempt from some pieces of employment legislation and the Restaurant Association of Ireland don’t want to pay overtime for Sunday work. I can see that many small companies and restaurants are in difficulty and in financially precarious situations. But why do they always focus on the “little people” when they want to get reductions? We know that rents and rates are absolutely crippling and are far higher than the personnel cost, so why don’t they get together demand loudly a change there?? You can argue about the sense of a minimum salary and overtime payments, etc and personally I think the drop in rents and some other cost would possibly justify leaving the minimum salary at EUR 7.65, instead of raising it to EUR 8.65 again.
