Hi all!

With this week’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), a big milestone has been reached! This is the 200th edition of this weekly newsletter/e-Zine!! For 200 weeks I am writing this mail full of information about fun and entertainment and you are reading it! Thanks! No matter if you are receiving the 200th Dublin Event Guide from me this week or if it is your first, you are very welcome in our continuously growing Dublin Event Guide Community. It all started with enough people top fill a small bus, the a plane (180), then the National Concert Hall (1000) and now even the PointTheatre/The O2 (8000) couldn’t accommodate all of us anymore. I guess the next has to be enough people to fill Croke Park. ;-)
It is my pleasure to provide thousands of fellow Dubliners every week with all the essential information about the free side of cultural life in Dublin and – as long as you support me – I will continue week after week.
Sometimes people wonder if I am mad to spend a whole night writing the Dublin Event Guide every Thursday for no pay whatsoever and they wonder why I am doing it. Well, the answer is simple. It is the many mails I get from you that spur me on, that tell me that I am doing something that is appreciated. It is the growth of the reader numbers that motivates me and it is the help that some of you provide through donations. Continue you support and I will continue to help you find free events and help event organisers to find an appreciative audience!
[ad]
My plan is to have a celebration of a number of achieved goals at some point during the year and I will tell you when that will be. If you are interested in putting such a celebration together and planning it, drop me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) with CELEBRATION in the subject line. The more people help, the bigger and better it will get! :-)

Share the love with your friends and family and tell them about this weekly e-Zine. If anybody ever tells you they are bored in Dublin or they complain that there is nothing happening, poke them and get them to subscribe to Dublin Event Guide. They can do that on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide by clicking on “Join Email List” in the menu on the left or they can send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG. This might help you to get the word out: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

We now are more than 4000 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide as well. Come over and click LIKE too. Be part of this growing online facebook community and tell your friends. You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page! And I know you don’t want to miss out!

For this week’s Feel Good Slot, I selected an amazing video clip! We all want to have a shot at life, want to get a chance, an opportunity. And if we work hard for it, we often get this chance. Maybe you just got it now. Maybe it is still ahead of you. If you have this ONE chance, will you use it as good as you can? Will do your best? Jason McElwain, an autistic student at Greece Athena High School in Rochester, New York, got such a chance. See what he did with it:

NATIONAL ACHIEVERS CONGRESS – LONDON
The National Achievers Congress in London from 02-04 July will bring three of the most inspiring achievers and speakers together on one stage. Anthony Robbins, Richard Branson and Alan Sugar will speak at this 3-day congress. The standard ticket will be GBP 297+VAT soon, but a few more tickets are available for GBP 197+VAT. You can book at successr.infusionsoft.com/go/72/ranger2285/ and you will find out more information there as well.
I have booked my ticket for this event in July. Richard Branson, Anthony Robbins AND Alan Sugar at one event is worth the money, I think.

This week Cathy A, Thomond C, Raymond R, Nicola R and Noemi V decided that the Dublin Event Guide is so helpful that they made a donation. A BIG thanks! Their donation will secure that you ALL will continue to receive this newsletter every week. You can contribute too and help and even if you have donated a few years back, see if you maybe can help again.

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just EUR 0.25 per newsletter, you definitely have that much!). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent? www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week I will go to the Special Olympics Collection Day as soon as I have this newsletter completed and you will find me in Henry Street from 18:00-19:00. At some point today I will check out the Ideal Home Exhibition as well.

For the next two days I will be “locked away” at a training course about Peak Performance Psychology (interesting stuff!), but if I had time, I would definitely be at the Record Store Day on Saturday and would go to the new Science Gallery exhibition. I was at the launch of the exhibition last night, but want to spend more time to see the exhibits better, so I will go again. ;-) A third event that interests me is the Road Trip Nation Event in Filmbase. Check it out!

On Sunday I would definitely go to the Japanese Hanami Day in Farmleigh House and then I would love to go to the “The Universe and I” physics lecture in the Exchange Dublin. Such a great idea!

On Monday and Wednesday the Archive at Lunchtime screenings in the IFI really tempt me. The films from 1963 are probably hilarious. On Wednesday the Inn Jokes in Kilmainham sound interesting and on Thursday I can recommend the Start your Business talk. You will find me – if I can make it – at the Blogger Twitter Whatever Meetup before I will spend the night on writing this long e-mail to you again. ;-)

RACOON – THE MATCHBOX THEATRE – TICKET COMPETITION
This is the last opportunity to see Racoon! Check out how to get free tickets! The Matchbox Theatre (13 South Great Georges Street, downstairs at Le Cafe Des Irlandais) is a brand new performance space in the City Centre and one of the first plays in it will be “Racoon” from 05-17 April (every day apart from Mondays). I had the pleasure to see the play in the launch night and it is brilliant. I am not someone easily impressed by plays and before “Racoon” only one other play managed it. So, I can definitely recommend it! The great thing is that you can still win tickets! The team is giving away 2 free tickets to a Dublin Event Guide Reader for EACH performance of Racoon at The Matchbox Theatre from 05 April – 17 April. Wow! The winner of the two tickets will be the first person to email stephanie.courtney6456@gmail.com with the subject line “Free Racoon Tickets from the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events” on each day of the performance (Make sure that you include your name and mobile phone number in the mail.) Regular tickets are EUR 10 and include even a free glass of lager. Regular reservations can be made at thematchboxtheatre@gmail.com.
Racoon is a one woman, one act play written by Tom Hall, featuring Cate MacGabhann. It is a play about a woman named Saoirse who never knew she needed to be found, until Seamus came into her life. As she examines him and the events of their relationship, her expectations collide with a secret he knows, leading to a shocking revelation. Now she must decide if she should become the woman he lost or go on forever alone. A very strong story, a hugely talented actress and a great director! Don’t miss out!

CHARACTERS IN CONVERSATION – HORSE ENTHUSIASTS
Last chance to enter: The UCD Alumni Relations ‘Characters in Conversation’ is a series of talks and the next one is on 19 April from 18:30-20:30. It will take place in the Astra Hall, UCD Student Centre, Belfield, Dublin 4 and has a horse theme: The legendary racehorse trainer Dermot Weld (MVB 1970) will return to his Alma Mater, to take part in the popular alumni event series ‘Characters in Conversation’ with guest interviewer Tracy Piggott. Weld studied veterinary medicine at UCD, qualifying in 1970. Dermot Weld has saddled big-race winners across four continents, including all five Irish Classics as well as the Ascot Gold Cup, Dubai International Racing Carnival, Hong Kong Mile and the American Derby. Weld has also won the prestigious Melbourne Cup on two occasions.
Guest interviewer, Tracy Piggott will explore Dermot’s memories of his time spent at UCD and how his career path developed after leaving University. As one of RTE’s frontline sports commentators and a regular contributor to RTÉ’s Sports Stadium and Sunday Sport, as well as being the daughter of the late champion jockey, Lester Piggott makes Tracy an ideal candidate to interview Dermot Weld.
Tickets for this event are EUR 20 and can be bought at www.ucd.ie/alumni or by phoning 01 716 1447.
For you, the Dublin Event Guide Readers, the organisers have made 5 (!!) pairs of tickets available and if you want to win a pair of tickets, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with WELD in the subject and your name and phone number in the body of the mail. DOCKLANDS MARITIME FESTIVAL CANCELLED?
For a number of years the Dublin Docklands Authority ran a Maritime Festival on both sides of the Liffey from the IFSC to where now the Samuel Beckett Bridge is. Running over the June bank holiday weekend, there were always a lot of stands along the Liffey and in addition there was music and street performance. The Dublin Docklands Development Authority has a massive deficit since seemingly the financial controls were a good bit looser than you would have expected expect (www.breakingnews.ie/print/docklands-authority-accused-over-financial-control-459266.html) Last night I was wondering if the festival was going ahead this year and unfortunately there is no reference to the Maritime Festival 2011 anywhere. The website is still for the 2010 Festival (www.dublindocklands.ie/maritimefestival/) and there is no press release on the DDDA website that announces the festival (but none either that announces a cancellation). However, with no reference to it ANYWHERE, this is bad news! Could it be that after the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture, we lost another big festival in 2011? :-O

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 8000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More new company introductions to come!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

FRIDA KAHLO & DIEGO RIVERA – IMMA
06 April – 26 June 2011: Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8. Masterpieces of the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection, presents the iconic paintings of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, the two central figures of Mexican Modernism. Few artists have captured the public’s imagination with the force of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera (1886 – 1957). The paintings exhibited include key images by Kahlo such as Self Portrait with Monkeys, and Self Portrait as a Tehuana or Diego in My Thoughts, and the major work by Rivera, Calla Lily Vendors (all 1943). The paintings are supplemented by other works including diaries, lithographs, drawings, pastels and collages – all offering a rich visual experience for the visitor. Also included are striking photographs of Kahlo and Rivera by Lucienne Bloch, Héctor García, Martin Munkacsi, Nickolas Muray and Bernard Silberstein.
Admission to the exhibition is EUR 5 / EUR 3, but on Fridays admission is free for all!! So check the exhibition out and go on a Friday if possible! :-)

X – RUA RED
18-30 Apr: RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre Tallaght Dublin 24
From 18-30 April, RUA RED’s Gallery 2 will be taken over by visiting students from Goldsmiths College, London. X is a group show comprising works by Ronin Cho, Hestia Peppe, William Robinson, Ian Wu and Kentaro Yamada who are all currently studying at Goldsmiths College on the Computational Studio Arts MFA. Their work reflects the wide range of approaches towards mediating between the worlds of visual, performing and relational (or interactive) art and technology.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS COLLECTION DAY
It is always a pity when many many people give their time to do good and the people running the show don’t do a good job in getting the word out. The Special Olympics is a very worthy cause and I know that many of you are more than happy to support the cause. On Fri 15 April the main collection day will take place and thousands of people are collecting money all over the country for it and in addition a heap load of great bands and choirs will help with their contribution for free. I would have expected the announcement of this day in every free media channel possible, but this was not the case. Pity! IDEAL HOME EXHIBITION – RDS (BALLSBRIDGE)
The Ideal Home Exhibition takes place twice a year and the spring exhibition will take place in the RDS from 15-17 April. The exhibition is targeting “home owners and home lovers”, so you don’t have to have your own home to find something interesting there, but the exhibitors are definitely more interesting to people that can make alterations and improvements in their own home than to people renting an apartment. The organisers describe “We have everything you need for your home improvements, extensions, home energy, interior design, room make-overs, gardens, patios, lifestyle and so much more.” There are many shops, cafes and venues where free admission passes (for Fri and Sat) are available among the leaflets at the door. Have a look. I am not sure, but I guess it is too late for the the route via www.idealhome.ie/free-ticket-spring11/ to register get free Fri or Sat tickets. www.idealhome.ie/

HUMAN+ THE FUTURE OF OUR SPECIES – SCIENCE GALLERY
15 April – 24 June: Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
A new exhibition in the Science Gallery was launched last night and as always, it is a MUST VISIT exhibition. If you are reading this Event Guide for a while, you will know that I am a big fan of the Science Gallery and have never been disappointed by and of their shows and exhibitions.
For the new exhibition artist and scientists explore the future of us. The exhibition is called “Human+” and asks the questions “What is the next step for humankind? Will we learn to take control of our own evolution or enhance our senses to allow us to see ultraviolet light, feel magnetic fields or hear ultrasound? Can we defeat ageing and extend our lives indefinitely? What would be the consequences for the environment and for our social relationships?” From a petunia plant combined with human DNA to a euthanasia rollercoaster and a prosthetic head, HUMAN+ will invite visitors to consider a future of augmented abilities, authored evolution, new strategies for survival and non-human encounters.
HUMAN+ opened on 15 April and runs until June 24th 2011. Admission is free (donations are appreciated) and the exhibition is open Tuesday-Friday 12:00-20:00 and Saturday-Sunday 12:00-18:00. Find out more on www.sciencegallery.com/humanplus
If you visit the exhibition and have questions or find it difficult to understand something, just ask any of the many well briefed and super helpful students (in black T-shirts) who work there. They are brilliant and it is always a pleasure to get some additional information from them.

———Friday————————

GOOD FRIDAY
On Fri 22 April is Good Friday this year. This is the Friday before Easter in the Catholic Calendar. It is quite a big church holiday and many think that therefore it is a bank holiday. And you are right, it IS a BANK holiday and all schools have a day off. BUT strangely and surprisingly it is NOT a public holiday, which means that you don’t have a right to take the day off. Some employers give a day off, others don’t. All pubs are closed and some museums as well. This means that as far as culture and entertainment is concerned, this day is definitely not very eventful.

WAY OF THE CROSS – PHOENIX PARK
Fri 22 Apr: 12:30-14:30 – Wellington Monument, Phoenix Park

This increasingly popular Good Friday event, which Dr Martin has taken part in every year since his return to Dublin, continues to the Papal Cross, stopping at five “stations” along the way. www.clonline.org/ie

URBAN OUTFITTERS – TEMPLE BAR
The Urban Outfitters Good Friday Bash is becoming an odd Irish institution. Details are not announced yet, but they seem to plan something similar again this year, check www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1491398321&sk=wall

SLAINTE ON GOOD FRIDAY
If this is your first Easter in Ireland, you will be very very surprised to find the pubs closed on Good Friday (22 Apr). Nobody is allowed to sell alcohol on Good Friday. Well, at least not in pubs, restaurants and off-licenses/supermarkets and unless something more important than Good Friday takes place on the same day! – So the ban is not total? – No, not at all! You are allowed to drink alcohol at home (obviously). And you are allowed to give alcohol away for free (Urban Outfitter had for years a Good Friday party where free beer was available). And you are allowed to SELL alcohol on a boat (while moving) (!!) or (even odder) in a train or at a train station (but only to ticket holders!). And the law can be changed locally (as it has been done last year) if, for example, a rugby game is on the same day as Good Friday, because obviously Rugby without beer can not be. – If there are so many holes in the law? Why does it still exist? – Many people ask that question! Interestingly the majority doesn’t seem any contradiction in all this and is very happy to keep the status quo. Personally I think it won’t do the society in Ireland any harm if the pubs are closed for two days a year (Christmas and Good Friday), but at the same time I am of the opinion that stupid laws should be put in the bin…and the law about alcohol on Good Friday is nothing else but stupid! And it doesn’t stop there!! In 2008 a total of 9 restaurants were brought to court because they were selling wine in Good Friday, something that is clearly against this (stupid) law, but the judge decided not to convict the nine restaurants and described the law as “ludicrous” and “ridiculous”. Odd that a judge can make up rules while deciding on cases! But you would respect her for doing the right thing…for a moment….until you read on and find out that she implied that the same law was NOT “ludicrous” and “ridiculous” in the context of pubs! Only in the context of restaurants! She said she doesn’t want to see pubs to sell alcohol. www.galwayindependent.com/local-news/local-news/%91ludicrous%92-people-can%92t-have-drink-with-their-meal-on-good-friday-%96-judge-/ Contradictions everywhere…and a law that has more holes than Swiss Cheese just stinks! And just to make sure that you don’t misunderstand me: I am not suggesting that people should drink lots of alcohol. Neither on Good Friday nor on any other day. And I am not suggesting that someone who doesn’t drink on Good Friday is stupid or ridiculous. If someone drinks or not on a specific day should be his/her private decision, but it doesn’t justify a law.

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
