———————————————————————

Hi all!

This week I have some unexpected challenges! I was very busy in my day job, had some rehearsals for our gig in the Olympia tonight and tomorrow AND now have a deadline for completing a day job related document this afternoon. For this reason I had to prioritise a little this week.

The normal intro has to be very short, I don’t have a complete update on the names of the lovely people that helped keeping this Event Guide going with their donations and I wasn’t even able to do all the draws for the competitions. Apologies for the slight “reduction of service”. I hope next week all will be back and I will catch up with the pieces that got dropped. I just prioritised the events during the week and will look after the rest over the next few days.
[ad]
Another thing that I had planned for this week was a small piece in the “Fell Good Slot” about Valentine’s Day because I know if creates stress in some people. For the last two years I had organised an “Alternative Valentine’s Day” to take the pressure off some of you a bit but this year it wasn’t possible to do that. I hope you won’t feel to stressed on Sunday. Not being forced to go to a restaurant with bad service on that evening could be an advantage, don’t you think? :-) And flowers? You get three times the amount of flowers for the same money any other day of the year, so buy yourself some flowers in a week or two and enjoy them. Enjoying life does not depend on having a partner, instead happiness comes from within you. Put a smile on, on Sunday, and do something special for yourself if you were prone to feeling a little stressed on Valentine’s Day in previous years!

A big thanks to Katriona McFadden who works for RTE Radio 1 and who mentioned this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) on the RTE 1 show “Drivetime” last Friday. More than 130 of you joined during this week and it seems that many directly or indirectly heard about it through Katriona’s help!
Can you help to? My goal is to grow our Dublin Event Guide Community to 7500 before the end of the year! Please print these Mini-Flyers (6 per page), cut them and hand them out to friends, family and colleagues or just to random people in town. ;-) www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
And if you work, shop or study somewhere where there is a noticeboard, then please print this page and hang it up (and refresh it regularly)! I appreciate your help!

————-
This week’s donors of helpful funds will be mentioned next week! I hope that’s ok! And if you too want to help with the cost of keeping the weekly newsletter going, you can do so here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed! You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter).Over the last two years only about 2% of the subscribers have donated anything, so I definitely need YOU too to help me keeping this newsletter going.

You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” (pls send me a mail afterwards so that I can thank you!) or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

——————————————————–

This week I found a really vast amount of free events and I get the impression there are more every week! :-O But the type of event where I would say “You HAVE to go to it” wasn’t there this week. So my recommendations this week will be a little sparser than usually. I will definitely go to the Chinese New Year Festival Carnival on Sunday afternoon and – if possible – will try to catch one of the events out of the list of the Russian Culture Festival. Apart from that there are a good few things happening for children (it is mid term break already again!) and a good few art events. Have a look if you find something that you like. ;-)

The event is a Spanish style romantic evening of live music, dance and socialising. You can learn the lively traditional Sevillanas dance or enjoy just watching how it’s done. ELVIS PRESLEY STORY – OLYMPIA THEATRE – TICKETS
Our gig in the Olympia is tonight and I hope to meet many of you! Kevin Doyle sings The Elvis Presley Story at The Olympia Theatre on Fri 12 and Sat 13 Feb (20:00). I will be on the very right of the stage from your point of view if you are looking for me. :-) But I recommend that you focus on the brilliant guy at the front! Kevin is not just a great performer, he is a really nice guy as well and all 22 of us on stage enjoy the gigs hugely. I hope you will enjoy them as much as we do! :-)
The pair of free tickets were won by Saundra Stephen’s. Congratulations! If you had entered and didn’t win, I am sorry, but I got soooo many entries and only had one pair of tickets to give away. Tonight’s gig will be quite full, but as far as I know there are still a small number if tickets available for tomorrow, so if you hurry you can still get them here www.ticketmaster.ie/search?tm_link=tm_header_search&q=kevin+doyle
Tickets are available from EUR 25 and I can guarantee you that you will experience a gig that is worth that! :-)

The CFCP made two courses available for free to two readers of the Event Guide and I will inform the winners over the weekend. In addition there is more good news! All participants in the competition will get a very attractive discount offer from CFCP if they decide to book a course. So even if you don’t win, you can benefit from taking part in Event Guide competitions. ;-)
Check out their impressive line-up of courses: www.cfcp.ie/courses.htm
www.cfcp.ie

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

FIRE IN CAPEL STREET
A big fire in Capel Street this morning caused the police to close the street. It seems three shops are burning and there are speculations that the fire might have been started in the head shop at the Liffey end of Capel Street. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0212/breaking86.htm

JAMESON DUBLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
The Dublin International Film Festival will take place from 18-28 Feb. There are not many free events, but a few film related library events and a few others that will be in next week’s event guide are part of the festival. www.jdiff.ie

ST PATRICK’S DAY – PAINT THE TOWN GREEN
Tourism Ireland has announced that they have “secured permission” to “green” buildings such as the Sydney Opera House, the London Eye and the Empire State Building to mark St Patrick’s Day this year. I guess “secure permission” means that they paid enough to get the ok?
The CN Tower in Toronto, which is the highest tower in the world, will also turn green, as will the Chicago river, the San Antonio river in Texas and the fountains at the White House in Washington. Lot’s of green colour! But I wasn’t very impressed when I heard that Tourism Ireland is investing EUR 1 million on activities promoting St Patrick’s Day this year, but despite the fact that the vast majority of tourists and people living in Ireland will be in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day, the fireworks display (Skyfest) will take place far away from Dublin again (in Limerick).
And what do you think about the “ambassadors” of Ireland abroad? Tourism Ireland has decided to use Ronan Keating (Ex-Boyzone), X Factor participants John and Edward Grimes (Jedward), Riverdance and “The Priests”. Do you feel appropriately represented?

CARLUCCIO’S CAFÉ TO CLOSE – OR MAYBE NOT
It seems that Carluccio’s Café, the light blue tinted restaurant in 52 Dawson Street, was successful. They threatened to close down because the landlord wasn’t prepared to lower the rent and it seems that they DID close down. However apparently the landlord then woke up and realised that no other company would be prepared to pay the ridiculous rent they were charging and in the end they seemingly agreed to a lower rent. Consequence is that Carluccio’s Café will re-open.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 5800+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Another start-up/new businesses will be presented here next week.

CHANGE THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS?
Would you join a company as an inexperienced newbie in that business and then expect to be hugely influential and at the highest management level within 9 months? Most of us realise that getting experience and making continual contributions over a longer period of time are required to get promoted. What seems to be normal for you and me, is absolutely unacceptable for George Lee. George Lee was once an journalist/reporter that was well known for his uninspired and downbeat reporting style. He never had to provide any creative ideas as a reporter, all he needed to do was to report about things others were responsible for.
In a surprise move he decided last year to leave his job at RTE TV and to join one of the opposition parties (Fine Gael). I am not sure why, but people believed he could make a huge change and in an election about 8 months ago he was voted into the Dail (the Irish parliament). After just 8 months he has decided that his role in that party was not big enough and decided to ignore the mandate the voters gave him and left the Dail and politics altogether. Very odd! The biggest disappointment, however, is that now he might return to be the most depressing and pessimistic journalist/reporter in Ireland. www.newstalk.ie/programmes/all/lunchtime/george-lee-announces-his-resignation-from-fine-gael/

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
