Hi all!
The snow is gone and I sense a smell of spring in the air. The night temperature last night was at +7 degrees. That is a definite improvement from -7 just one week or so ago. The days are already getting longer since 21 Dec and soon we will see the first snow drops (flowers) breaking through the soil. Sure there can be another few cold days, but I forecast (totally unscientifically and only guessing) that the snow chaos is behind us for at least another year.
Based on the Met Eireann weather forecasts a week ago, which were apparently not much more reliable than my TOTAL guess about the weather, we expected at least another week of snow and ice and if all the salt that had been ordered was or will be delivered to Ireland, we will definitely have enough for next year. ;-)
This week is FULL of events, so I won’t waste much more time with this introduction and get to the events list as soon as possible. As you can imagine, the BIG events are still a bit away, but there are plenty of smaller events taking place and all I can recommend is to get out and to enjoy them. The staying at home that was enforced by ice and snow is behind us. :-)

For the “Feel Good Slot” this week, I found some “Wisdom Lessons From The Birds” which you might want to read and think about for a moment before you move to the rest of the newsletter:
FACT 1: As a bird flaps its wings, it creates an “uplift” for the birds that follow. By flying in a “v” formation, the whole flock adds approx. 71% extra flying range.
LESSON: People who share a common vision, goal, direction and sense of community can get to where they are going easier and probably quicker because they are travelling on the thrust & trust of one another.

FACT 2: When a bird falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.
LESSON: We should stay as a team and in formation with those headed in the same direction as we want to go. We should be willing to accept their help and extend our help to others.

FACT 3: When the lead bird tires, it rotates back into the formation and another bird flies to the point position.
LESSON: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks. In a team, people are interdependent on each other’s capabilities, skills, talent and availability of resources.

FACT 4: The birds flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
LESSON: Motivation and encouragement are important aspects in team work

FACT 5: When a bird gets sick or wounded, two birds drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.
LESSON: We need to stand by each other not only during difficult times but also when the going is good.

What a long Event Guide again! FULL of events of all types. From lectures to gigs to dance events and things to do for children, I think there is something in this weeks newsletter for everybody! Have a read! ;-)
Let me select a few things I will do or would do if I could divide myself in pieces. ;-)
Tonight I plan to go to the Flamenco Event, have a look at the Competition section. Tomorrow I might go to the Temple Bar Food Market. It was cancelled last week and in the evening there is a birthday party of a friend. On Sunday the Car Boot Sale in Harold’s Cross and the Newmarket Brocante market sound tempting. In the evening I would love to go to Shebeen Chic for the Comedy Crunch, but instead I will be in the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass. On Monday the RIA discussion sounds really interesting. On Tuesday I will be interviewed and you can hear me, check out the Teleseminar of the Association of World-Class English Speakers! ;-)
On Wednesday two TOTALLY contrasting events sound interesting, the screening of the RTE Comedy Sketch Show on one side and the Holocaust Memorial Lecture on the other side. Definitely a varied event programme this week.

FLAMENCO CLAPPING WORKSHOP & DANCE PERFORMANCE
Tonight Fri 15 Jan Peña Flamenca El Indalo are hosting their first monthly flamenco workshops in 2010. The workshop is aimed at a broad audience not just Flamenco dancers. Continuing their collaboration with Spanish dancer and choreographer Felipe de Algeciras, Peña Flamenca El Indalo have organised a series of monthly Rhythm & Clapping Workshops, each of which will be followed by an evening of dance and music performances. And the first of these events will be tonight in The Cobblestone Bar, Smithfield. Hand clapping as rhythmic accompaniment is one of the most distinctive sounds in flamenco. In the Rhythm & Clapping Workshop from 19:00-20:30 , Felipe will provide an introduction to the different flamenco rhythms and will teach the basic clapping patterns for each rhythm. He will be accompanied on guitar and cajón by Lucas González. This workshop is open to everybody and no dance or music experience is required. Taking part in the workshop costs EUR 15.
From 21:00, Felipe de Algeciras, Lucas González and guests will take the floor for a series of dance and music performances in an informal gathering. Members of the audience will be invited to join in the fun. Entrance costs EUR 12.
Access to both the workshop and the performances is at the special price of EUR
20 and discounts are also available for students and the unemployed.

If you have never heard this name before, then don’t worry, just make sure that you read on. If you have heard Kerwin’s name, then you know what I am taking about and I am sure you will be thrilled that he will be back. LAPTOP POWER ADAPTER/SUPPLY NEEDED
This is not world moving Dublin News :-) , but I could do with your help. I am looking for an unneeded, 2nd hand Power Adapter for a Laptop that you would be happy to get rid of. The Laptop is a HP 530 and many HP and Compaq Laptop’s have the same Power Supply (18.5 V and 3.5A) with a yellow tip connector. If you have an old one of these power supplies still lying around and you don’t need it anymore, we can help each other and I will collect it from you. GUINNESS STOREHOUSE VISITED 1 MILLION TIMES
It turns out that Ireland’s most popular visitor attraction is the Guinness Storehouse. In 2009 more than 1 million people visited the place … and most visitors came from Britain. Since opening in December 2000, more than 7.5 million people have passed through the Storehouse doors. DUBLIN’S SKYLINE – GIVE YOUR OPINION
A new website www.dublincitydevelopmentplan.ie went live this week and will be available for two months until 12 March. It hosts videos of how Dublin will grow and forums for you to give your views. A seven-year development plan will be online so that you can see the draft vision for Dublin. The plan says that Dublin is a low-rise city and should remain so while high rise buildings should only be considered in areas such as the western outskirts and the docklands. ICE SNOW AND THE CONSEQUENCES
First there was ice and snow and not a lot of salt. Then there was water in burst water pipes, then the water was gone because the reservoirs ran dry due to the burst pipes and due to some people leaving the tap running so that the pipes wouldn’t burst and now the next problem is coming our way. Due to a shortage of salt, urea was used in gritting mixes by the local authorities as a substitute. Local authorities in Meath, Kildare, South Dublin, Carlow and North and South Tipperary are now monitoring water supplies for traces of urea and ammonia following the treatment of road surfaces with the materials in recent days. Urea is the main nitrogen-containing substance in Urine (and interestingly you find it in a lot of creams and beauty products – referred to by the nicer name of “Urea”). Ammonia is another by product of the metabolism. As you can imagine, these substances shouldn’t be in drinking water and luckily no traces have yet been found. www.rte.ie/news/2010/0114/weatherwater.html
PRIVATE MEMBERS CLUB IN EXAMINERSHIP
I mentioned last week that the private members club “Residence” on Stephen’s Green went into examinership due to millions of Euro in debts. During the week the courts had a look at it and had some HARSH criticism for the managers: The club is seeking a continuation of court protection, but it turns out now that it was effectively subsidised by the “hard-pressed Irish taxpayer” through employees’ tax deductions which were not passed on to the Revenue (the tax office). Revenue is now owed EUR 1.2 million and Judge Peter Kelly said that it was “a form of thieving” to use employees’ money deducted for PAYE and PRSI contributions to subsidise a business. Strong comments, but the juedge made a good point.

FUNDRAISER FOR HAITI – SHAKEDOWN CLUB
On Fri 15 Jan the weekly Rock’ n’ Roll club Shakedown will be fundraising for Concern’s emergency appeal for Haiti’s earthquake victims. Shakedown features live original bands (this week Kaplin and Grum), followed by “karaoke kidnap” in which people nominate their friends to sing for a donation to the cause. will be formally opened by the President Mary McAleese. This building is the latest Public Private Partnership venture. And critics claim that Babcock and Brown, the private partner in this venture, will not only get money for building the facility but will also continue for 25 years to receive a monthly fee for managing the building. This will apparently bring the project total closer to EUR 300 million, than the original estimate of EUR 120 million.

IPSC FILM SCREENING

BOTANIC GARDEN – LECTURE
“The Pursuit of Plants: from Templeogue to Tegucigalpa” by Dr Daniel Kelly is the next lecture in the Botanic Gardens. It will take place on Thurs 21 Jan from 20:00 in the Visitor Centre. Dr Daniel Kelly is a Senior Lecturer in the Botany Department at Trinity College Dublin. A distinguished ecologist, he has worked extensively on the woodlands of Ireland, as well as in Latin America and the Caribbean. 3RD JAMES JOYCE GRADUATE CONFERENCE
On Friday 22 Jan and Saturday 23 Jan the Third James Joyce Graduate Conference wil take place. This graduate conference organised by the UCD James Joyce Research Centre in association with the Humanities Institute of Ireland will feature papers by PhD and postdoctoral students working on many different facets of Joyce’s texts. Plenary lectures will be given by Professor Franca Ruggieri, Dr Fritz Senn, and Dr John McCourt. The website claims that “all welcome”, especially Postgraduate Students. CARIBBEAN PARTY
Jamaicans and the wider Caribbean Communities in Ireland (JCCI) are inviting to a Caribbean Event at the Melody Bar&Restaurant, 122 Capel Street, Dublin 1 on Fri 22 Jan from 19:00-02:30. Admission is free and you are invited to come with your friends if you are interested in exploring the Caribbean culture through music. At this event, JCCI will ask you as well to help the people in Haiti by donating money to the Haitian charity “A Cry for help”.

Jordan Belfort, who wrote two books “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Catching the Wolf of Wall Street”, earned once over $50 million a year as a big high-flyer on Wall Street and then dropped to the lowest possible point being seriously addicted to drugs and ending up in prison for 22 months. THE FORGOTTEN PANDEMIC? – SWINE FLU
Did you realise that the sensational stories about snow, the lack of salt the discussion if schools should stay open or not and the outrage over the fact that a minister was stuck on an airport abroad like many others totally wiped out the sensational articles and reports about swine flu? I remember that around October we were told that the world was coming to an end and unless we all get the injection against swine flu TOMORROW or sooner, we will all be dead. And what happened then? In France the Swine Flu was this week declared as contained. A Pandemic it was definitely not, but massive amounts of money were paid to pharmaceutical companies for the supply of swine flu vaccination. And not surprisingly, questions are now raised now about the Swine Flu Fraud!
