Hi all!

Did you go to any of the open buildings during OPEN HOUSE 2009 last weekend? I had a great day going to the Mansion House, City Hall and the Busaras. Sooo interesting! For example, did you know that there is/was a theatre underneath Busaras (www.irish-architecture.com/news/2007/000153.html)? And that in the building above nearly 1000 people work? Most people think it is not a pretty building, but when you start understanding the ideas and concepts that were used in 1952 when it was built, the building becomes sooo interesting. If you missed the Open House visit, you can find out SOME detail here www.irish-architecture.com/buildings_ireland/dublin/northcity/store_street/busaras/ I am regularly amazed about the hidden things and things below the surface (sometimes literally!) that you can find in Dublin.

Thanks for the mails that many of you sent regarding the milestone achievement of breaking through the 5000 subscriber limit. I appreciate the time and effort! I always try to reply to each and every mail, but often enough I can’t keep up. So, please don’t be disappointed if you don’t always get a reply.

We, the Dublin Event Guide Community, are growing and growing and in coming months I hope to be able to give you even more reason to read the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). The intention is to work with some companies so that you all benefit not only from getting a huge list of free events every week, but get some more tangible benefits. It won’t happen immediately, but I am working on some interesting ideas. If you do have a company and would like to be part of this new plan, just send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com with “JV” as the subject.

Please keep spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events):

Thanks for sending me some suggestions for the “Feel Good slot”! This “feel good slot” is especially for you if you feel al little down today, but even if the sun is shining for you, the videos or quotes here could inspire and motivate you to even higher highs. :-)

This week’s video is called 100 Happy Faces and it was Mathilde V. who thought of you when she sent it the link to me! Thanks Mathilde!
People are asked in this video, what makes them happy. Have a look, it is nice! www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eg2OWXgLWM
And here is a challenge for you “Feel Good Slot” fans. ;-) A few weeks ago the video of the week was www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEqdr_Awdak Cornelia K loved the video and the music and is trying to find out the name of the soundtrack. I would GUESS that is from a movie soundtrack, but am not sure. Do you have an idea? Please let Cornelia (and me) know by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail com with SOUNDTRACK in the subject. Thanks.

Thanks to Christoph Sch. and Deirdre O’B who helped this week with a donation. Without the lovely people that donate to the cost of the Event Guide, I couldn’t do it. Sending the mail in a way that it is not intercepted by Spam Filters costs EUR 75 per month.

This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E, Cliodhna D, Brian L, Padraig S, Kathie S, Orla niF, Jef B, Susanna N, Kate C, Nicola J, Claus Sch, Gordon S, Jeanne M, Fiona O’C, Marta M, Angela C, Isabelle F, Saundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F, Valerie McN, Estelle O, Aoife M, Mairin M, Fionán O’L, Maeve L, Blaithin O’D, Ciara D, Mike G, Andrej G, Deirdre R, Vanessa O’L, Chris McK, Frank B, Dolores P, Cornelia K, Cathy A, Orla C, Kevin McC, Steph G, Wanda J, Siv M-J, Niamh niS, Gwen H, Jasmin T, Ian O, Eva C, Will P, Gráinne P, Caroline R, Elizabeth F, Suzanne B, Adele G, Jack C, Keeva H, Mairead MacM, Niamh G, Siobhan C, Jackie B, Penny O’D, Kathryn K, Aidan G, Ciara G, Deirdre L, Stephen D, Mary Q, Donald P, Aidan C, Julia Sch, Isak R-B, Sharon O’S, Brajan V, Nancy O’D, Zelie McG, Niamh K, Jennie R, Semin S, Gavin H, David G, Becky B, Emer niB, Niamh N, Esme E, Ciaran H, Lois M, Gerard Ph, James O’H, Pere OC, Marsha D, Sarah McC, Patrick O’C, Sandra R, Christoph Sch, Deirdre O’B and www.stickyfingerstravel.com (The travel guide for parents travelling with their children.), www.flamencoindalo.com (A group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, located at 6 Merrion Square, which supports contemporary Irish artists.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and low priced printer cartridges). The main sponsor is www.kravmagaireland.com, the self-defence training centre for everyone, which provides regular 12-week or 2-day self-defence training courses for beginners.

Currently more than 5000 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful and nice people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the next section. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed too! You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month i.e. 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter) as a fair donation. (If you pay it monthly, the bank or PayPal fees are nearly more expensive than what will arrive with me, so a once-yearly payment is probably better for you and me.) — I know, some of you multiply 5000 x 12 and come up with huge numbers. ;-) I like your positive thinking, but over the last two years only about 2% of the subscribers have donated anything, so the big car and house and luxury holiday for me are FAR off and your donation is really only used to ensure the survivability of this newsletter.

You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

I expected that this weekend would be relatively quiet before I started writing the Event Guide and then I realised that this was not at all the case. …and I totally underestimated the time it would take to write this week’s edition. :-O
I will go to the Oktoberfest and maybe 140 Characters on Friday.
On Saturday the Viking Festival, then later the Poverty Requiem and from 22:00 the Ratzingers Gig in the Westin will keep me busy.
On Sunday the Capoeira Festival is something I would like to visit and throughout the weekend there are Working Class Heroes events. And there is Innovation Dublin as well. Phew! Soooo much choice! ;-)

COORS LIGHT PEAK – MORE THAN A MUSIC EVENT
Coors Light is inviting to Coors Light Peak, a music event plus more that takes place in the surroundings of ports and shipyards. If you want to go to a completely different type of live music event, then you should enter the competition for the tickets by clicking on the picture on the left.
“Imagine a fully functional shipping port, heavy steel cranes, smoldering scrap metal, weighbridges and open docks with cargo ships. Now imagine top music acts playing against this backdrop enhanced by amazing lighting and visual shows under the night sky. All this will be cocooned in an amphitheatre created from shipping containers, which act as the building blocks of the event.”
The event will take place on 07 November but because there will be a very limited number of tickets available you should hurry with your registration! The event is free, but you have to request your tickets by clicking on the picture on the left or by following this link ad.ie.doubleclick.net/clk;218906855;42049756;u?http://www.coorslightpeak.ie/locations/peak_dublin/ It all sounds a bit mysterious. ;-) Perfect ingredients for a great night!

ABRAKEBABRA BUYS O’BRIENS SANDWICH BARS
O’Briens Sandwiches who got in trouble and ended up in liquidation over what seems to be a “good times-suitable” structure of shop leases that was absolutely unsuitable for times of economic difficulties has now been bought by Abrakebabra Investment, an investment company that is backed by Denis Desmond and which owns as well the Abrakebabra chain, Gourmet Burger Kitchen and the Bagel Factory. www.rte.ie/news/2009/1007/obriens.html

SLI EILE – INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERING
Sli Eile, the Jesuit outreach organisation for young adults, runs every year an international short term volunteering programme. In 2010 it will be a 3 week trip to either Zambia or Jamaica and the programme is limited to 10 volunteers. In Zambia (Lusaka), where Sli Eile has involved with this project for the last 8 years, you will have ample opportunities of activities, which include informal teaching, music, sports and social skills activities with the boys (12-18 years) in the school. In Jamaica (Kingston), Sli Eile volunteers run three weeks summer school in St Anne’s Jesuit Parish with the help of local volunteers, which include basic computer, music, art and sports lessons. If you are interested in participating contact Debbie Moore on debbie.moore@sli-eile.com or 01-8943165 or visit www.sli-eile.com/prog_vol_intntl.html

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4600+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

HARD WORKING CLASS HEROES
This weekend (16-18 October) the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival is taking place. It is an industry showcase and close to 100 bands take part. In seven venues these bands play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the ticket is a all-included weekend ticket for 40 Euro or a day pass for EUR 21. Not a bad price for 100 bands, but extra for us – well, I wish! ;-) – a new element has been added this year. It is called HWCH & The City and means that bands appear in record stores, bookshops, cafe’s and instrument shops around the city centre to perform for just 15-30 minutes.
I had planned to include the list and scheduled here, but it is much too long (which is a good complaint!) so instead, please check on hwch.net/hwchcity.html
Some of the venues are for example Simon’s Place (the café at the bottom of George’s Street Arcade), Road Records, Tower Records, Chapters bookstore, Easons bookstore, Music Maker etc. In addition to the schedule you can follow on Twitter and find out news there twitter.com/HWCH09 and receive updates on who is playing where.

UN POVERTY DAY COMMEMORATION
On Sat 17 Oct the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is taking place and world wide there are events to recognise and think of people in poverty and to raise funds. In Dublin the 17th October Group and ATD Fourth World will celebrate at 11:10 on Custom House Quay this day near the Commemorative Stone at the Famine Memorial opposite the IFSC building at the bridge across the Liffey. ATD Quart Monde is an international NGO founded by French priest Father Joseph Wresinski in 1957; ATD stands for ‘aide à toute détresse’, which more or less translates as ‘assistance to all kinds of hardship’.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is a day for people living in extreme poverty to speak up and talk about their lives, their hopes, their dreams, their achievements, etc… There will be many community groups and individuals taking part at the event as well as schools, migrant groups etc. There will be time for individuals (adults and children) to talk about their own stories, times for poetry and arts, times for quiet reflection, times for music and times for sharing this moment together.
Thanks to Marie D. for letting me know about this event.

SPIRIT OF IRELAND – RDS LECTURE
The Committee of Industry & Commerce presents a lecture in the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) in Ballsbridge. The title is “Spirit of Ireland – Energy Independence is within our reach” by Graham O’Donnell & Prof. Igor Shvets and it will take place om Thurs 22 Oct from 18:00 in the Minerva Suite.
“Ireland is lucky to have some of the best wind resources in the world. The biggest hurdle in advancing our wind energy portfolio is its intermittency. The Spirit of Ireland proposal aims to make use of Ireland’s natural resources to combat our rising CO2 emissions and the impending energy crisis. Their plan is to build pumped hydro storage facilities to store wind energy when wind farms are producing a surplus and release this energy at times of low wind. By building dams across the face of valleys near the sea, Spirit of Ireland proposes making use of a unique opportunity to make natural reservoirs for a pumped storage station. This will reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels, cut down on our emissions and make Ireland a world leader in green energy production. This will in fact become the first large scale power plant producing green carbon free energy on demand 24-7 in the world. Admission to this lecture is free and open to the public. For bookings & information contact:

CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL – TEMPLE BAR
From 30 Oct-01 Nov, the second annual Chocolate Festival will take place in Temple Bar. The event has a huge potential, but the Chocolate Fair on Sunday was a little disappointing last year. Let’s hope it will be better this year.
One aspect, however, that was already very impressive-sounding last year, was the free (and non-free) ticketed events. Again, this year there are a number of free but ticketed events and more non-free events. If you are interested, check out www.templebar.ie/home_nav_2_t_15.html or if you want to have a look at the full programme, then go to www.templebar.ie/docs/choc-fest.pdf

During last week the top salaries in RTE were published and it turns out that the worst Late Late Show host EVER (Pat Kenny) got EUR 951,000, the most annoying and boring radio broadcaster (Joe Duffy) got more than EUR 408,000 and the most under-used radio presenter (Marian Finucane) received EUR 570,000. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1009/breaking59.htm
These salaries are VERY high and a lot was written in newspapers about how much they are out of line with the current economic situation. I have to admit that the economic changes in the world are for me not an automatic reason that people should get lower salaries and if the commercial TV station TV3 or one of the commercial radio-stations who earn their money paid similar salaries, I wouldn’t even comment on it. But the situation with RTE is completely different! RTE is NOT earning their money, in state it is a state-funded station which means that YOU and ME are paying these salaries through our radio and TV license fees. And would YOU employ Pat Kenny for nearly a million per year??? I would fire him and get a really good presenter for maybe a tenth of the money! Marian Finucane allegedly is just four hours per week on air. EUR 570,000 for that? ABSOLUTELY outrageous! It means she is getting EUR 47,500 per month. With typically four weekends per month, that is EUR 11,875 per radio show or nearly EUR 50 per minute! And did you ever listen to Marian Finucane’s radio show? You are paying for it! You better listen from now on, you are paying a lot for it. www.rte.ie/radio1/marianfinucane/

Enjoy the week!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
