This coming weekend is so busy with Culture Night today, that I will keep this intro as short as possible. I might write a bit more again here next week. Culture Night is just brilliant. There are sooo many events and completely different to the Guinness “celebrations” last night, all events are free, so make the most of it.

The Culture Night is the main focus for this weekend as far as I am concerned. There are so many events tonight and I still have to go through the details of the Culture Night programme to see what _I_ want to do. ;-) On Saturday and Sunday, the Ranelagh Arts Festival provides nearly endless entertainment. So, this is another week where there is not really room for boredom. Next week I will be busy with Krav Maga training, we are starting a new course in Blackrock (the first course outside of the city centre – www.kravmagaireland.com). And then I blink twice more and Thursday is here again. :-) It really feels as if the weeks are racing by faster and faster. :-O And you know what: In 3 months is Christmas! ;-) And Tesco has started selling Advents Calendars! THE RAGS GIG – AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL FUNDRAISER

THE SECRET CASTLE OF MAGIC – TICKET COMPETITION

The ‘Secret Castle of Magic’ – a show for older kids and adults – opened its doors in November 2008 and is Ireland’s only Magic venue. FITT BOOTCAMP MEMBERSHIP
I hadn’t told you yet who won the 3 months membership to FITT Bootcamp for the winter season. DUBLINBIKES – SOME SCANDAL
If the DublinBikes don’t interest you , I apologise, but many of us in our Dublin Event Guide Community are either already users or are thinking about signing up, so there is definitely an interest there for everything around the DublinBikes. This week there is some scandal: Fusio developed an interesting tool which seemingly had a lot of fans. The tool is an iPhone application and it showed you the availability of bikes at the different stations. A great application that is very helpful, but JC Decaux – the advertisement agency who provided the bikes in return for a HUGELY favourable deal for outdoor advertisement space – does not think so. Instead they threatened Fusio with legal action if they don’t withdraw the application! The owners of dublinbikes.mobi seemed to have anticipated trouble and are more or less anonymous. Clever! Let’s hope that their site stays up because the iPhone application or the .mobi website provide the information that make the bike scheme a lot better. FAKE PICTURE OF LUAS VS DUBLIN BUS ACCIDENT
During the week a picture made the round on Twitter and per e-mail and it was even shown at the BizCamp on Saturday as part of a presentation on media. Most people took it at face value and thought it was a very funny coincidence: img43.yfrog.com/i/rivf.jpg/ However, the picture is a blatant, but cleverly done fake. POSTCODES FOR IRELAND FROM 2011
It has been discussed for a long time and since Ireland is the only country in Europe that still has no postcodes, it was just a matter of time. Now the timeframe has been defined: From 2011 Ireland will probably (changes are still possible) have postcodes. The codes will be not numerical as in most countries worldwide, but will most likely be a copy of the British system (what a surprise!…NOT!) with alphanumeric codes.

CULTURE NIGHT
On Friday 25 Sept is Culture Night. From 17:00 until late (some locations are open until midnight!) there are hundreds of different events and places to visit. It is a Museum Night as it takes place in other cities, but it is combined with lots more. If you are anywhere near Dublin, I strongly recommend that you have a look at the programme on www.culturenight.ie to see what interests you. You can download the full programme here culturenight.ie/docs/Programme2009.pdf or check on the website to see what is happening in the different parts of the City Centre. Free Culture Night buses will help you to get around: www.culturenight.ie/listing.asp?id=16m so there is no excuse anymore. I will definitely make the most of this night. I would recommend that you particularly pick locations to visit that are normally not free because the rest you can see at any time throughout the year, but the non-free ones you might not see otherwise. Don’t forget either to check pages 40-43 in the full programme!
In this section of the Dublin Event Guide I will mention a FEW events. They are by no means selected because they are better than other events, instead it is a bit of a cross-section to give you a flavour.
CULTURE NIGHT: FOAM PARTY

The Dublin Theatre Festival has started on 24 Sept and one of the public performances is the “Playhouse” where Liberty Hall is turned into a giant (low-resolution) TV screen. Until 11 October you can watch animations on Liberty Hall and can even submit your own animations via playhouse.daft.ie Unfortunately there are – apart from a couple of panel discussions – no other free events in the Theatre Festival programme.

On Sun 26 Sept from 10:00 the Adidas Half Marathon Road Race will take place in Phoenix Park. The route will bring runners from Chesterfield Ave through Lord’s Walk, Spa Rd, North Rd, Mountjoy Cross. They will then come back to Chesterfield Ave, continue through Wellington Rd, Acres Rd, Military Rd, Glen Rd (Upr & Lwr), onto Ordnance Survey Rd and back to Chesterfield Ave.
The following gate and road closures will be in place for the duration of the event; Chesterfield Ave will close from 7am to 12:30pm, from 9:30am to 11am the Main Gate will close. From 9:45am to 12pm Castleknock Gate, Ashtown Gate and Cabra Gate will close. Ordnance Survey Rd, Upper Glenn Rd and Knockmaroon Gate will close from 9:45am to 2pm. North Rd will close from 9:45am to 11:30am and Island Bridge Rd will close from 10am to 1pm. Avoid the area if not attending the event.

TALEND OPEN STUDIO DISCOVERY ROADSHOW – FREE TRAINING
The Talend Open Studio Discovery Roadshow is a series of free technical workshops which are taking place in a number of cities through Europe. In a 3 hour session you will receive complimentary training in Talend Open Studio – and at the end of the workshop you will leave with a USB key containing the data integration jobs you have developed. The roadshow will be in Dublin on Tues 29 September with the following training times: 09:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00. The target group is IT Professionals with an interest in data integration, but you don’t need to be a developer or a Java expert. COMMUNITY WORKERS PROTEST
On Wed 20 Sept from 13:00 a protest of Community Workers against cutbacks will take place at Parnell Square. I hope it will be in the Garden of Remembrance because otherwise such a midweek and midday event during the time when most other people have to work, will cause traffic chaos around Parnell Square. Don’t get me wrong, I strongly support right to protest, but if that affects others ability to do their job, I wonder if a different solution couldn’t be found. www.indymedia.ie/article/93463
SHORT FILM FESTIVAL – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
On Wed 30 Sept the Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish Cultural Institute, is inviting to a Short Film Festival: “La Boca del Lobo. Cortometraje contemporáneo”. * The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 17:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL

LECTURE SERIES – HUGH LANE GALLERY
On Thurs 01 Oct at 13:00 an Artist Talk will take place. Corban Walker will discuss his current exhibition ‘Mapping Hugh Lane’. This informal talk will take place in Gallery 8. www.hughlane.ie
BOTANIC GARDEN LECTURE
On Thurs 01 Oct Dr Magnus Lidén, a botanist and Director of the University of Uppsala Botanic Gardens in Sweden, which includes the historic gardens of Carl Linnaeus, will lecture on “Bleeding hearts, Corydalis and their Relatives”. The event starts at 20:00 in the visitor centre of the Botanic Gardens. OPEN MIC NIGHT – LUCAN COUNTY BAR
Ian Smith, a talented guitar player and friend of mine, is in the process of setting up a new Open Mic event in the West of Dublin. The first night is on Thurs 24 Sept. from 20:00 in the Lucan County Bar (1st floor). The County Bar is on the grounds of the Lucan Spa Hotel on the N4. Admission is free and there are spot prizes for participants. All types of music welcome and both musicians and listeners are very much invited to come along/participate. MUSIC FROM WITHIN – MEDITATION CONCERT
“Music from Within” is the title of a free meditation concert on Fri 02 Oct at 20:00 and on Sat at 16:30 in Lotus Yoga, 15 Wicklow St, Dublin 2. The description says “A meditative experience through music, based on the compositions of meditation teacher Sri Chinmoy. Featuring Kanala Auer (sitar), Sadanand Magee (tabla) and English choral group Ananda. The concerts are given free of charge in the classical Indian tradition, and out of a conviction that the inner peace and tranquility the concerts facilitate is the birthright of each human being, and not something that can be charged for. EUROPE OR USA? – DECLAN GANLEY
The German news magazine “tagesthemen” secretly filmed some interesting interview preparation by Declan Ganley. Declan Ganley is campaigning for a NO vote against the Lisbon Treaty. He owns some business(es) who mainly deal in the USA and he surprised many people before the previous Lisbon Treaty vote with his strong opinion about this referendum. This time around he had declared that the people clearly told him that they didn’t want his involvement after he lost his attempt to win a seat in the European Parliament. But then suddenly a few weeks ago he changed his mind and entered the fight again. In this secretly filmed clip, he hides the US flag that sems to be behind his desk before an interview about Europe.
