Hi all!
Flying back from Germany last Sunday it was a glorious day at the airport in Germany and – you all have experienced it – powerful and bright sunshine throughout the flight above the clouds. It wasn’t meant to last, though. On the approach we had to fly through the clouds and landed in heavy rain at Dublin airport. It was a pure coincidence, but it couldn’t have been timed better that during the flight I started reading Eckhart Tolle’s book “The Power of Now” and either it is described in the book (I can’t find the quote at the moment!) or reading the book reminded me of a very interesting image: “Even if the world around you looks at times grey and miserable, the sun is always there…just above the clouds.” This is the picture described in my own words, but I am sure you understand what I am trying to say! The sun is always there and it will break through the clouds again. “Grey” is not a description of the world, but only a description of the aspect that we see currently.
A few weeks ago I invited people who saw opportunities, despite the fact that the media is trying constantly to create more and more harrowing disaster scenarios, to send me a mail with a description of their venture or business idea and today I will tell you about some of them in the Dublin News section.

And finally: I mentioned last week that I was planning an Event Guide Community meeting after the previous meetings have been very successful. Last year we celebrated an “Alternative Valentine’s Day”. The idea last year was born when some people told me that they hated Valentine’s Day because couples feel obliged to spend too much money for not the best food and service in restaurants and some single people feel as if they are left on the shelf. To counter that we met on Valentine’s Day in the Porterhouse in Temple Bar and had a great evening. Singles and Couples were there, so it is NOT a match-making or speed dating evening, instead it is a chance to escape the worn-out routine of “flowers, chocolate + dinner” and to do something else interesting and fun to do. This year, Valentine’s Day is on a Saturday and if you have no other plans OR want to meet with a bunch of nice people with similar interest and leave the “romantic” part of Valentine’s Day to another day when the restaurants are less hectic, you should join me. The venue is not yet decided, but it will be in the City Centre and in walking distance from the Liffey. In order to plan the event a bit, I need to know if you intend to come to it so that I get an idea of the numbers. Quite a number of you asked me to provide a digested version of the week’s events from the long list of events in this newsletter. It is quite challenging to pick and choose, so to make it a little easier for me, I am describing in this section what _I_ intend to do or what I would do if I weren’t busy with other things. ;-) Maybe that helps you. All events mentioned here are described in further detail further down.
Tonight I plan to go to the Facebook Megaparty in Purty Kitchen in Temple Bar. On Saturday, I want to have another look at the fascinating Science Gallery, then Food Market in Temple Bar, TradFest in Temple Bar and with a bit of luck the musical performance in Piedescalso Art Café are on the list. A busy day, but it will be great. ;-)
On Sunday I will probably go to the Ceili Mor in Temple Bar for a little while at least. And later to the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass again.
On Monday and Wednesday there are very interesting lectures, but unfortunately I won’t be able to make any of them

COSMIC VOICES – BULGARIAN A-CAPELLA CHOIR

HABITAT STORE TO BE REPLANNED AS CAFÉ
The current owners of the ex-Habitat store on College Green and Suffolk Street tried to sell the lease after Habitat closed down and it was reported that the German super market Lidl was interested, but the price of the lease was in the end so high that owners weren’t able to find a buyer. Now the owners are re-building/re-arranging the building and will turn it into a café on the College Green side and possibly a clothes store on the Suffolk Street side. However, even after that they still need to find some companies that are interested in paying a very high price for renting the shop.

DUBLIN BUS CUTS FLEET AND JOBS
A further outfall from the recently announced job and fleet cuts at Dublin Bus is now that all Nitelink busses during the week will be cancelled and will only remain at the weekend. The consequences are either that people stay at home even more, or have to pay the over-hiked (over-hiked by the regulator, I should add!) Taxi prices OR they will drive after having consumed alcohol. I HOPE the last option will NEVER be considered, but clearly the first two options are not good either. Maybe the Green Party could raise their hand to remind the government that they are still there!?

A few weeks ago I suggested/invited everybody on the distribution list who has recently started a company – out of need or because they saw this great opportunity -, to send me some information about their venture and I promised to let everybody in the Dublin Event Guide Community know. I got a good few replies and am still open to receive more. Initially I had planned to list all of these business ideas here together, but to keep the size of the newsletter a little under control, I will now distribute them over a few weeks.
In the sequence in which I received the mails, I will tell you about two companies/ideas today and more will follow next week. This week’s companies are already quite well set-up, and if you are at a lot earlier stage don’t get concerned. The idea is to help you out of the starting blocks as well by spreading the word.

Mark Howell contacted me, he has opened a new sandwich bar café in the IFSC a few months ago. It is called MYO -Make Your Own and it is exactly that. As a customer you come in the shop and make your own sandwich. MYO have 14 choices of breads, wraps and rolls, 78 different fillings, salads, drinks, Lavassa Coffee and muffins from the California Market Bakery (a.k.a the Muffin Man) which are VERY popular. Olivier has, together with his two business partners, taken on the distribution of Cars and Electric Bikes in Ireland with their company, www.greenaer.ie. DECLAN CLARKE – GOETHE INSTITUT
“Loneliness in West Germany” is the title of an exhibition by Declan Clarke which will be on show in the Goethe Institut (37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2) from 30 Jan-28 March. Admission is free. Specifically developed for the Goethe-Institut, this new body of work by artist Declan Clarke references the interrelationship between history, politics and culture, engrained in the ideology of the Institut itself. Clarke has created two new film works along with a number of interventions in the Goethe-Institut’s reading room, gallery space, library, car park and an upstairs apartment.

FACEBOOK MEGAPARTY
Tonight the first (as far as I know) Dublin Facebook Mega Party will take place in Temple Bar and if all will happen as indicated, it definitely will be a MEGA Party. Set up by three individuals who came up with the idea after hearing about similar parties in other cities, their facebook group (www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=45207820379) became rapidly popular and has more than 3100 members now. Roberto Feola, Emmanuele Angione and Daniela Sabatini initiated the whole idea and then got together with the Purty Kitchen (former Bad Bobs) in Temple Bar (34/35 East Essex Street) who were interested and tonight is the night: More than 1100 people have confirmed that they will come and 1200 have said that they might come. With the Purty Kitchen not being the biggest venue I would expect it could turn out to be a “sell-out” tonight. If you arrive before 23:00 there is no admission charge. After 23:00 you will have to pay EUR 10 (and will get a drink for that). I will try to be there around 21:30 to experience this first ever Facebook Party in Dublin. The organisers strongly suggest that you print out priority passes, but I am not sure that these priority passes will make much of a difference. Nevertheless, bring it with you if you are going. On Fri 30 Jan the newly formed Traditional Irish Group “Reelan” will launch their debut album ‘The Crooked Picture’ – a collection of new and fresh original compositions (music & song) by fiddle player Sandie Purcell. FRENCH FOR TODDLERS – ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
“A petits pas” is the name of this “event” and it is especially for francophile mothers (and fathers) with toddlers. The Alliance Francaise (1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2) describes the programme in this way: “Starting from February the Alliance Francaise French language immersion programme for toddlers 1-5 year old will deepen the parent-child bond through French. “People who learn a second language at a younger age are more likely to have more advanced grey matter than those who learn later” say researchers from University College London. At Alliance Française, we strongly believe this and now offer an innovative programme one toddler-one adult to enrich your child’s intellectual development and ability to be open-minded to other languages and cultures. TEMPLE BAR TRAD FEST
The Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) is hosting a programme of free family-friendly events in Temple Bar as part of this years’ Temple Bar Trad Fest (www.templebartrad.com). On Meeting House Square every evening from Thurs 29 Jan to Sun 01 Feb you can see free outdoor movies including Yu Ming is Ainm Dom and Fluent Dysphasia (starring festival patron and award-winning actor Stephen Rea).
On Cow’s Lane in the Old City part of Temple Bar there will be a special craft market on Saturday 31 Jan 11:00-15:00.
And a free outdoor céilí mór (Irish Dancing for everyone) with the famous Tulla Céilí Band will take place on Meeting House Square on Sunday 01 Feb from 14:30-17:30.
Pipe bands will be playing all around Temple Bar throughout the Festival so can hear great music for free in the most unexpected places.

FILM SCREENINGS + BOOK LAUNCH – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
On Sat 31 Jan, the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar will be screening Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan’s works ‘I Frenatori’, ‘Call of the Wild’, ‘Monument of Sugar’, and the ‘Runaway Films’ from 13:30. The screenings will be followed by a lecture entitled ‘The Politics of Landscape’ by French curator and critic Christophe Gallois.
At 17:00 on Sat 31 Jan, Project Arts centre will be launching two new publications. The first, ‘Permaculture’, edited by Sarah Pierce and Grant Watson, is a celebration of Project Arts Centre’s visual arts program from 2001 to 2006 alongside short reflections by individuals, artists and curators, and the second publication ‘Redrawing the Boundaries’ accompanies the current exhibition ‘Monument to Another Man’s Fatherland’ by van Brummelen and de Haan. LIGHTWAVE FESTIVAL – SCIENCE GALLERY
The hugely interesting Lightwave Festival and Exhibition in Science Gallery is continuing. The exhibition is taking place from 23 Jan – 20 Feb, but the core part of the Festival is only running until 31 Jan. During this time the artists/scientists are present every day (16:30-18:30) to explain their work to you and there will be talks and films and performances. As the name suggests the Lightwave Festival focuses on light, light effects and experiments that have to do with light. I was at the launch and will most likely go again on Saturday. The Science Gallery is open from 16:00-21:00, so there are no excuses for not visiting the exhibition. ;-)
The Gallery is at the back of Trinity College in the Naughton Institute very near Pearse Street Dart Station. The easiest to get there is to walk from College Green along Pearse Street until you reach the church on the left. The Science Gallery is on your right behind the glass front.

There is no admission charge for Alberto’s performance, but the Art Café is still open at that time and serving food and coffee. Unfortunately Piedescalso doesn’t have a website and therefore it is sometimes difficult to find out about all the other exhibitions and concerts they are organising in this nice place But one thing I have heard about is a weekly Art Jam. EUGENE FROMENTIN – NATIONAL GALLERY LECTURE
The National Gallery is inviting to a lecture entitled “Eugène Fromentin: French Orientalist Painter and Writer” by Dr Barbara Wright (Fellow Emeritus, Trinity College Dublin). It will take place in the National Gallery on Sun 01 Feb at 15:00.
Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876) had the unusual distinction of being acclaimed as both a painter and a writer, in addition to making a major contribution to travel literature and art criticism. This lecture will focus on the paintings of Fromentin inspired by his visits to Algeria and Egypt (nineteenth-century Orientalism encompassed the Middle East and the countries of North Africa bordering on the Mediterranean).

WHAT MAKES THE IRISH DIFFERENT – UCD LECTURE
From 02 Feb-06 Feb the Adult Learner’s Festival will take place throughout Ireland. In Dublin a number of free events are provided and I will list them on the respective days. On Mon 02 Feb at 19:15 a lecture is taking place in UCD. “What makes the Irish different?” by Tom Inglis (UCD) is the UCD Adult Education Centre’s contribution to the Adult Learners’ Festival. Prof Inglis’s main areas of research are identity, cultural globalisation and secularisation. As a former Director of Aontas, Professor Inglis maintains an interest in the theory and practice of adult learning. He has published, to a wide audience, and teaches courses on Contemporary Irish Society, Identity, Diversity and Social Change, Body and Soul, Sociological Theory and Cultural Theory and Analysis. DANTE AND THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS – PUBLIC LECTURES
A series of six public lectures, supported by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, will take place at University College Dublin from 02 Feb – 23rd Mar. Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride are the seven deadly sins that were deeply rooted in Dante’s spiritual and cultural makeup. Moreover, they intensely affected the conception and composition of his Commedia. Five scholars of Italian language and Literature and one historian will speak about violence and deviancy in the late thirteen century, Giambattista Vico’s philosophy and Leon Battista Alberti’s architecture…

INFORMATION DAY – FOCUS IRELAND
On Tues 03 Feb the housing and homeless charity Focus Ireland will take part in the Aontas Adult Learners Festival and invite all visitors to take part in creating an interactive art piece as part of its information display. Focus Ireland’s Spokes education service will have a marquee in Temple Bar Square on the day where the theme is “Learn in Your Community.” Visitors to the marquee can find out more about the Spokes service which provides education, training and employment programmes for people who are 16 years and over who are – or have been – homeless. People will be invited to construct, draw/autograph their own cardboard brick with something to signify education/learning represents for them. These bricks will be then be used to build a house onsite linking the important role that life long learning & education plays in supporting people to secure a home and create a better future.

BLAZE AWAY – LECTURES IN NATIONAL MUSEUM
A new lecture series, entitled Blaze Away starts on Tuesday 03 February 2009 at the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History in Collins Barracks, Dublin 7. This lecture series coincides with a newly opened exhibition at Collins Barracks, also called Blaze Away. The lectures will examine the history of creating and using pistols and swords in Ireland before mass manufacturing as well as the evolution of small arms technology in the twentieth century.
Professor James Kelly, St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra and author of “That Damn’d Thing Called Honour” will give the first talk (Tues 03 Feb, 18:30), surveying the colourful history of dueling in Ireland.
A lecture by Dr. Patrick Geoghegan, Trinity College Dublin and author of the book, “King Dan: the Rise of Daniel O’Connell, 1775—1829″ concentrates on the three duels fought by Daniel O’Connell. O’Connell infamously killed a Dublin Corporation official John D’Esterre on 02 February 1815.
Other speakers include the creator of the exhibition Blaze Away, Curator, Lar Joye, Paul Doyle, Registrar of the National Museum, Dr. Harman Murtagh, Athlone Institute of Technology and of the Military History Society of Ireland, Comdt. Gerry Shinners and Lieutenant Alan Kearney, of the Irish Defence Forces and Detective Inspector Kevin Brooks of An Garda Síochana.

BOTANIC GARDEN – LECTURE
The Lecture “My garden – squeezing a quart into a pint pot” by Tony Rymer
is taking place on Thurs 05 Feb. Tony Rymer will talk about a wide range of alpines, perennials, bulbs and hardy orchids. He has made trips to montane areas of Europe, Turkey and North America in search of wild flowers. CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute is inviting to a weekly seminar about climate change. The next public lecture will take place on Fri 06 Feb from 12:30-13:30 in The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2. The topic is “Making markets work for the environment – the role of the carbon market in Europe” by Professor Frank J. Convery, UCD School of Geography Planning and Environmental Policy. MID TERM WORKSHOPS – NATIONAL MUSEUM
The National Museum is running a number of workshop in the mide-term break for students. These workshops are free and all materials are provided and due to popular demand the workshops are run twice a day, one at 11:00-12:00 and the second at 14:00-15:00. Places are limited to 15. The workshops will be taking place at the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts, located in Collins Barracks.
Mid-Term Programme:
* Wednesday 18 February 2009 – Sliotars of Love
Make traditional Irish Hurling balls and learn how they were used as love tokens.
Age 8+. Places are limited to 15. Booking is essential.
* Thursday 19 February 2009 – Explore our new Barracks Life Room
We will have two sessions showing you the galleries letting you handle the objects and try on the uniforms in our Barracks Life Room
Session 1 11.00am – 12.00pm: Come along and examine the equipment and uniforms of soldiers who lived in this Barracks in the 1880′s, find out just how unhealthy the Barracks was and see what the soldier learnt.
Session 2 2.00pm – 3.00pm: Explore life in Ireland during the Emergency in the early 1940′s, look at our crashed plane engine, bomb shelter and see what the soldiers wore and used in their daily life in the Barracks.
Age 9+. Places are limited to 20. Booking is essential.
* Every Day at the Activity Area
The Activity Area is situated between the Out of Storage and Silver Galleries on the first floor of the Museum. Activities are free and don’t need to be booked, which means you can stay for as long as you like. Activities will follow a monthly theme relating to the Museum’s collections. Age 4+

TEMPLE BAR STORE “SEALS” ALCOHOL IN PAPER BAGS
Do you usually crack open the bottle of wine on the way home after you bought it in Tesco’s? Or do you normally empty your cans of beer right after getting them in a supermarket? This seems to be what you are all doing and what you have to be prevented from doing! And a brown paper bag (with a sticker on it…no wait…it is called a “seal”) is meant to stop you from doing it!
The Centra shop on Wellington Quay, near Temple Bar is “sealing” bought alcohol in a paper (!!) bag to stop you from drinking it on the street:

While I agree that alcohol consumption could be/should be reduced, especially where it leads to antisocial behaviour, I doubt that a paper bag with a sticker on it will in ANY way prevent the person that is in urgent “need” of alcohol in the middle of Temple Bar from shredding the sticker, tearing open the paper bag and inebriating (means: getting drunk) himself/herself with reckless disregard for the sealed and secure paper bag packaging. This idea is just odd!
