Hi all!
I am just back from a great night in the Sugar Club where a “Road Test” for new Irish comedians took place. I wrote about it last week and went – with a few friends – to that event tonight and it was really good. Some great Comedians, some good ones and one that was not good at all. :-) Entertaining mix! If you get a chance to go to an event organised by “Jongleurs Comedy”, you should definitely go!
Since I am only starting now with this week’s Dublin Event Guide, you will probably get it a few hours later than usually, but I hope that is ok.
Last week was a bit of a disaster weather-wise, do you agree? The torrential rain on Saturday made the Drive-in movies at Farmleigh House impossible. I am not exactly sure what and how many films were cancelled, but there was definitely a big impact. I tried to get from the City Centre to Blanchardstown (due to my day job) and it took me 3.5 hours to get there! Usually the September in Ireland is a better month than July and August, and this year it won’t be difficult for September to be better! I am not giving up hope YET. In African countries there is a special dance and ritual to ask the gods for rain. Maybe we should have a ritual for the opposite?? ;-)
More rain is forecasted for the coming weekend and there is a worry that it could affect the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture next weekend (22-24 Aug) because the area where the main stage will be (Newtownsmith Green) got flooded during the rain last week and drainage problems combined with new rains could make that space unsuitable. Let’s hope that someone can quickly come up with an anti-rain ritual!

UNSTOPPABLE BRILLIANCE – BOOK COMPETITION
Liberties Press, the independent Irish publisher, who has an impressive catalogue of good books, has launched a new book. The book is called “UNSTOPPABLE BRILLIANCE – Irish Geniuses and Asperger’s Syndrome” by Antoinette Walker and Prof. Michael Fitzgerald and is hugely interesting and controversial at the same time.
The book is described as “This fascinating and controversial book suggests that many of the most notable people in Irish politics, the arts and sciences may have exhibited traits of Asperger’s syndrome (a variant of autism) – and asserts that much of their drive and success may in some way be connected to this condition. The book is aimed at the general reader and features an introduction by MEP and rights activist Kathy Sinnott. Figures covered in the book include Robert Emmet, Pádraig Pearse, Éamon de Valera, Robert Boyle: scientist, William Rowan Hamilton: mathematician, Daisy Bates: ethnographer, WB Yeats, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
Very often people who are affected by Asperger’s exhibit high-level abilities in certain areas, other physical or behavioural traits may also be apparent. In Unstoppable Brilliance, the authors seek to demonstrate the particular facts, foibles and attributes of many well-known Irish historical figures, and show that in many ways their drive, focus and considerable achievements were almost inevitable given their high-level aptitude in particular fields – an aptitude not entirely of their own making or volition.” Michael Fitzgerald is a Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Trinity College, Dublin and is the leading expert on Asperger’s and autism in Ireland today. Antoinette Walker is a freelance editor and writer.

EDUCATE TOGETHER NEEDS SUPPORT
“Educate Together” opened 30 years ago their first primary school. The organisation was set up to offer multi-denominational (means: multi-religion) education where until then nearly all primary schools had been catholic. Educate Together decided to remove religion from the school training in order to avoid separation and possible discrimination of pupils. However, it is important to note that the organisation is NOT against religion or religion classes, but is of the opinion that religion classes should take place outside the normal school hours.
The demand for this type of education has grown rapidly and there are now 44 primary schools around the country with another 12 due to open in September.
With this success and because the multi-denominational training should not stop at the age of 12, Educate Together would like to expand their successful method into the post-primary level. They have applied to the Minister for Education and Science to be registered as a patron of second-level schools and need your support now.

DIXONS, CURRYS, PC WORLD
Did you know that Dixons, Currys and PC World are all owned by the same retail company? Maybe that explains the high prices of all three in comparison to komplett.ie or elara.ie?
Well, the new announcement is that all Dixons stores in Ireland will be rebranded as Currys and the name “Dixons” will disappear from the shops and will be used as an Internet shop name only. In addition currys.ie and pcworld.ie will be launched later this year. It seems that the plan is that you “book” online and then collect the goods in the shop instead of buying online and getting the goods sent to your home. Not sure how it makes sense to retain the “Dixons” name if there are no Dixons shops left were you collect your “booked” goods, but I am sure the mother company, DSG Retail, has some ideas for that.
IRISH TIMES FREE ONLINE
Have you heard that the online version of the Irish Times is free again since the beginning of July? It originally was free many years ago, but then – against the trend of time – the Irish Times decided in 2002 to turn the online version of the paper into a non-free subscription service. From being one of the most popular Irish sites when free it must have experienced a HUGE drop in visitor numbers and commercially I wonder if it could have been successful. Someone told me that the Irish Times at some time explained that they followed the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times from free to non-free. Interesting comparison by a relatively small Irish (provincial) paper.
It took a long time, but the powers to be have realised that free is better (all 1700+ in the Dublin Event Guide Community knew that for a long time!) But it might have helped that the Irish Independent did modernise and update their online service and always provided it for free. GROUP SHOW – GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
“Based on our Current Science…” is an exhibition in the Gallery of Photography and will be on show from 14 Aug until 21 Sept. Featured artists are Ulrika Ferm, Martin Healy, Seán Hillen, Paul Murnaghan, Lee Welch, a television interview between JZ Knight and Merv Griffin and Wright & Griffiths.
The organisers explain that the exhibition is unique because “each of the works lay claim to more than one author through the appropriation of visual imagery from another source.”
The exhibition will be accompanied by three September video screenings in Temple Bar (with support from the Temple Bar Cultural Trust) in the first week of September.The screened videos/films are ‘Latoon’ by Sean Lynch, ‘Explaining Magic to Mercer’ by Susan MacWilliam and ‘The Carriage’ by Diego Guiterrez. The screening will take place after dark on Meeting House Square on Wed, Thurs and Fri 4, 5 and 6 September 2008. The opening reception and in parallel the launch of a limited edition catalogue will take place on Wed 13 September 2008 at 18:30. “Reality Wonderland” is the name of the exhibition by Emma Turpin, Laura Carey, Niamh Dunphy and Aoife Ryan. And just for the fun, I will include the gallery’s description here unaltered: “fantastical notions creep in and out between the cracks of normality, somewhere between fact and fiction in a suspension of disbelief”. Since July, Phantom 105.2 have been running the “Phantom First Friday” event at ALT (Andrews Lane Theatre) on the first Friday of the month. The event consists of live performances from two up-and-coming Irish bands, with a headline set by a more established Irish band. Afterwards there is a Phantom DJ entertaining the masses. 10 MILE RACE – PHOENIX PARK
On Sat 16 Aug at 10:00 the Lifestyle Sports-adidas Frank Duffy 10 Mile race will take place in Phoenix Park. The race starts at Chesterfield Avenue near the Castleknock Gate and first goes down Chesterfield Avenue passes by Dublin Zoo and then turns into Wellington Road. Two rounds will be run and the last runner is expected to arrive at 12:00 at the Finish which is near the Start. More than 3600 people are expected for the race! You can’t take part anymore, but you can still watch the runners and cheer them on.

BACK TO THE FUTURE – THE BERNARD SHAW
An 80s Mania “Back to the Future” will take place in the Bernard Shaw Pub in South Richmond Street on Sat 16 Aug from 14:00-00:00. The organisers describe “For the whole day and night expect an 80′s revival to the highest calibre. During the day we have old school arcade games like Street fighter, Pacman, Double Dragon and Paul’s McGraths Pro Evo Tournament with Xbox Live. There’ll be a market where you can get those shiny tracksuits you always wanted, the stonewash jeans you wished you didnt throw away and a sodastream cola that you haven’t had for years. Hair and makeup will be on hand to turn you into an 80′s dreamboat just in time for the live band Botheadz who are gonna churn out those 80′s hits. Simon Judge will be on hand for an 80′s disco later on into the night.”
The gaming part is a celebration of arcade classics, where hourly arcade gaming tournaments, among all the other things, will keep you busy. The event will see gaming going back to basics with all the classic arcade games on offer. HYPER-VISION – SCIENCE GALLERY
Already the last weekend for this exhibition: The new exhibition in the brilliant Science Gallery is called “Hyper-Vision” and is the biggest exhibition of 3D lenticular photography ever on show in Ireland. Hyper-Vision is created by Cork-based artist and innovator Jon Mitton, using the MittonLR 1, which is a unique system enabling high quality 3D image capture of virtually anything. Hyper-Vision will challenge the viewer allowing the visitor to experience ultimate depth in pictures and to be able to look deeper into the artwork on display. As part of Hyper-Vision visitors will be able to use the Hyper-Vision photo booth, supported by Canon, to have their own portraits taken in 3D using the Mitton LR1 Linear Rail. Hyper-Vision draws from two of John’s recent exhibitions “For Alice” and “Macrompians”. The exhibition will be open from Saturday 09 August until 22 Aug from 12:00-18:00 from Tues-Sun. Last chance this weekend: The Science Gallery in the Naughton Building at the back of Trinity College (near Pearse Street) is inviting to “Your Science Your Say”, which will be available from 30 Jul – 16 Aug. “Watch three scientists explain their research. Vote for what you think is the best pitch. The winner will receive EUR 4,000 towards their research and your vote helps shape the research agenda. Your Science Your Say is an experimental project by Ian Brunswick, as part of his M. Sc. thesis in Science Communication at Dublin City University. MINI ME – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
The Visual Arts Workshop “Mini Mi” will take place in the Cowshed Theatre or – if the weather is good – outdoors in Farmleigh House on Sat 16 Aug at 13:30 for 4-6 year olds and at 15:30 for 7-9 year olds. CASTLETOWN HOUSE
Castletown House is Ireland’s largest and finest Paladian style country house. It is approx 15 km from the city centre and accessible via the M4 (take the Celbridge West/Leixlip West exit of the M4 and take the first left) or via Dublin Bus No. 67/67a from Pearse Street to Celbridge. Like Farmleigh House, Castletown House is owned by the Office of Public Works (OPW). And like Farmleigh House there are cultural events taking place in Castletown House and a good few of them are free. The number of events and the number of free events is significantly less than for Farmleigh House, but nevertheless I will try to keep an eye on what is happening in Castletown House so that I can tell you about it.
Currently the No. 10 Downing Street Silver is on display in Castletown House (18-31 Aug), however a visit to that exhibition is not free.
A free event on Sat 16 Aug at 15:00 is “A Reading of the nose”. Castletown House’s resident theatre company The Performance Corporation present a rehearsed reading of The Nose: A new adaptation of Gogol’s hilariously surreal comedy, by Tom Swift.
This reading is the culmination of a week of workshops at Castletown, led by director Jo Mangan and involving some of Ireland’s best acting talent. It’s also an opportunity to get a sneak preview of the play, ahead of its première at Project Arts Centre in Dublin this November.

Every Thursday (14:00-20:00) and Saturday (09:30-16:30) the Dublin Coop Food Market at the new premises in 12 Newmarket, Dublin 8 takes place. It is not really a market to stroll over and to browse, but it is a more serious market where you would go to buy your vegetables etc and then leave again. It is a true co-operative that runs the market and you can become a member, contribute with your help every 7 weeks or so and then get a discount OR you can just buy for the normal price. Promoting the old Irish tradition of impromptu (solo) singing is an event in the Back Lounge of the Strand Hotel, Seafront, Bray. MOVIES ON MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
The Open Air Movie Screening on Meeting House Square on Sat 16 Aug (22:00) will be “Little Miss Sunshine” by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. You need to get free tickets before and you can get them from the Temple Bar Information Office (they are available since 09 Aug and could be all gone, but it is worth trying). Tickets can be collected from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. On the night a small number of people without tickets will be let in if ticket holders don’t show up. So, you could try getting in that way, even if you don’t have tickets.

FAMILY SUNDAY – NATIONAL PRINT MUSEUM
On Sun 17, 24 and 31 Aug the National Print Museum is inviting to workshops and training and – rather unusual for the National Print Museum – all is free. The Museum is in Haddington Road in Dublin 4 and the entrance is to the left from the Beggar’s Buh pub. The museum is open from 11:00-17:00.
On arrival at the museum you will receive an Action Pack filled with activity sheets to keep you busy as you look around the Museum. Throughout the museum there are Action stations where you can try your hand at a traditional method of printing or make your very own printer’s hat.

ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE PARK
On Sunday 17 August, Marlay Park becomes the biggest classical venue of the year as up to 20,000 people flock to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Park with exciting entertainment for all the family presented by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Park features family events from 14:00-16:00, movies on big screen and in the evening the 48 piece Slovak Festival Orchestra and a guest appearance by award winning Irish Tenor Sean Costello and internationally acclaimed Soprano, Celine Byrne. The event ends on a high note with a magnificent fireworks display. Tickets are free and will be available from local libraries in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County. PINT AND PICTURE FILM CLUB
Howard Linnane (086 3614787) is – in co-operation with the pub “Russells of Ranelagh” – running a film club. The film club shows screenings of Irish short films and feature films for free on the big screen in “Russells” in Ranelagh.
The next event is – most likely – on Wed 13 Aug at 14:00. However, Howard is considering a time change due to the Olympic Games, so please ring him to confirm the time and to find out what the feature film will be. (Russells of Ranelagh is on the main street, just down from the Luas station and across from the Triangle, it is the pub with the nice balcony at the front).

OPERA IN THE OPEN – AMPHITHEATRE, CIVIC OFFICES
From Thurs 07 August until Thurs 04 Sept., every Thursday Dublin City Council is presenting an open-air opera performance at the amphitheatre at Civic Offices (behind Christchurch Cathedral). The performance this week on 21 Aug will be “La Boheme” by Puccini and it will start at 13:00. With nice weather this could make for a great lunch hour.
PARTY IN THE PARK
This is a slightly odd announcement and I am not totally sure if it is accurate and correct: It is surprising that this event takes place on a Thursday and in addition I have not found a reference to it elsewhere. The fact that I didn’t find it on other event sites makes me wonder if it is taking place or if this event has been cancelled!
Dublin City Council invites families and communities across the City to “Party in the Park”, on Thurs 21 Aug in Mountjoy Square Park between 12:00 and 15:00. RTE 2fm will broadcast live from the park as part of the Kellogg’s “Let’s get Active!” Initiative. There will be active fun and games for all, street games, messy play, team games, pillow fights for the children and for the adults we will have sumo suits, tai chi, giant jenga, tug-o-war and plenty more! Stacks of mess and mayhem for everyone to get involved! The idea behind this day is to put the emphasis on ordinary play. The aim is to encourage play, interaction and laughter all of which promote creativity, healthy living and vitality. Party in the Park promises to bring out the kid in everyone!

The summer season in Temple Bar is unfortunately coming to an end and this is the last movie screening on Meeting House Square for this season. It is a Closing Gala and the film shown will be the hugely funny “Life of Brian”.
