Event Guide 41: Flamenco Workshop, Elvis Presley Concert, Project Art Centre Exhibitions, Health Protest, Earth Hour, Concert for Peace and a lot more

March 28th, 2008

Hi all!

St. Patrick’s Day is over, Easter is gone and I am hoping for another bank holiday on Monday!!!! :-) I definitely could get used to these short weeks as it leaves so much more time for events. ;-) Last weekend I got a chance to look at the Event Guide name issue again (For all new subscribers: due to some potential legal challenges we need to change the name of this Event Guide in the near future.) and the matter is progressing. 105 of you voted for some of the suggested names and since I don’t want to annoy anybody with lots of mails, I will discuss a short list of a few names with the 105 and whoever else is interested in helping with the decision. If you have voted, you will hear from me soon again. If you didn’t get a chance to vote a few weeks back but would like to contribute to the name search, just drop me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) with the subject “Name Change” and I will add you to the list.

On another, but related, aspect I need a bit of help from you! If I sent the weekly mail like a normal e-mail through my ISP, they Event Guide would be rejected by your mail provider or would end up in your Spam Filter. For this reason I am currently sending this Event Guide in 10 batches via a number of GMail accounts. This is quite cumbersome and not 100% reliable so I will be able to do that for another while, but will have to move to a professional newsletter sending service at some stage in the near future. Regarding the new name, my preference would be to trademark it so that we won’t get in any further trouble at a later stage. And finally I will need to register domain names etc for the new name. You probably see where this is going! ;-)

I can promise that this Event Guide will always be free to you, the subscribers. BUT to cover the cost I need to generate some money and I am looking for ideas from you, how I could generate money without interfering with the nature and the integrity of the Event Guide. I thought for example of sponsorship. Maybe you work for a company or know somebody who would be interested to sponsor or part sponsor this venture? I haven’t worked out any details and am at the “idea stage”, so all your suggestions are more than welcome.

Do you remember that a few weeks back I said that a goal was to reach 1600 people by October? Today, this Event Guide will go out to 940 people! And I am convinced that – with your help – the 1600 goal is definitely achievable! Tell your family, friends and colleagues about it and ask them to subscribe by mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. Thanks! :-)

Robbie Blake won the pair of tickets for the Classical Concert “Spring Serenade” organised by the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) Student’s Union. The Student Union had made the pair of tickets available for free and Robbie won the competition. I was at the concert in the National Gallery last night and it was brilliant! A great variation of different talented soloists with a really good choice of music. (I loved Maeve’s performance at the end! Perfect end of the evening. :-) ) If you get the chance to go to any of the RIAM Student Union’s Rush Hour Recitals in future, you should go!

The other exception to the FREE rule is for events I am heavily involved with:

ELVIS PRESLEY STORY – CONCERT
I am part of the “Graceland Gospel Singers” backing choir of the Elvis Tribute Band “Elvis The Way It Was”. And you have the chance to watch our “Elvis Presley Story”, which was seen last year by more than 5000 people in a two week run in the Tivoli Theatre. It is a one-night-only event in the National Concert Hall in Earlsfort Terrace and is in aid of St. Michael’s House. On 03 April from 20:00, Kevin Doyle, The Way It Was Orchestra and the Graceland Gospel Singers will commemorate the life and music of Elvis Presley. The event is a concert that walks you through Elvis’ life with songs, pictures, video clips and voiceovers. It is not a musical, but an Elvis Presley tribute concert with multi-media add-ons. St. Michael’s House is a charity providing facilities and services to over 1500 people with learning disabilities in Dublin City and County. If you now want to have a laugh about me on stage :-) I will happily entertain you as long as you help St. Michael’s House. :-P The price for the tickets is EUR 25 or EUR 15 and it can be booked via
www.nch.ie/Box-Office/Performances/The-Elvis-Presley-Story.aspx?date=03/04/2008&time=2000 – But seriously, the concert will be brilliant and I promise that we will deliver an extra good performance for you.

JEREMIAH DAY – PROJECT ART CENTRE EXHIBITION
“News Animations/No Words for you, Springfield” is the complex title of an interesting sounding exhibition in the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar. The exhibition will be on show from 28 March – 26 April and you can visit it from 11:00-20:00 (Mon-Sat)
My synopsis of the exhibition description is this: Jeremiah Day will show a new series of photo-works commissioned by Project Arts Centre depicting contemporary Springfield. Day has been researching the movement of the people of the Blasket Islands off the Dingle Peninsula (Ireland), to the town of Springfield near Boston (USA) culminating in a complete evacuation of the Islands in the 1950s. The exhibition is a meditation on the city as the end point of the Blasket story-telling tradition. For the exhibition, Day has asked legendary dance performer Simone Forti to assemble a video focussing on her ‘news animations’ – a body of work Forti has developed since the early 1980′s of improvising from the content of the daily news.

GHOSTS OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED – EXHIBITION
The Mermaid Arts Centre in Main Street in Bray (Co. Wicklow) is showing the photography exhibition “Ghosts of the Faithful Departed” by David Creedon from 07 March-05 April. “Between 1949 and 1989 over 800,000 people were forced to leave Ireland. By 1956 the population had fallen to 2.8 million the lowest ever recorded. The rural communities were decimated by the impact of emigration and those who stayed had to suffer hardship, isolation and were very dependent on money and clothes that were sent home by siblings or relatives living abroad. Many of those who stayed in this decade did so in silence as they watched family members and friend’s leave. Now in a new millennium these people have passed on and their homes stand as a monument to a bygone age. Title of ownership has now passed to far-flung relatives, and these houses presently lie deserted awaiting the return of owners whose dreams of coming home may never be realised.” The exhibition is a tribute to those who stayed, and those who left, and the difficulties they faced. Admission is free and the Mermaid Gallery is open Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00. (www.mermaidartscentre.ie)

FAIRY STORIES – UCD LECTURE

ART IN THE LIFE WORLD – EXHIBITION
In the unusual setting of the old and disused Ballymun Swimming Pool an “Art in the Life World” Exhibition can be viewed from 29 Feb-12 April (Wed-Sun 13:00-18:00).
A disparate range of local, national and internationally renowned artists are brought together in Dublin to occupy, challenge and provoke in this changing part of the city.
www.artinthelifeworld.com/exhibition.html. It seems that admission to the exhibition is free.

JOHN REYNOLDS IN MOTHER REILLY’S
As far as I can see this is a regular gig, but since I haven’t mentioned it before, it is about time that I do. The John Reynolds Band (3 Piece rock band with a touch of funk, jazz and blues) is playing in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines (Uppercross House Hotel. 26/28 Upper Rathmines Road, Rathmines, Dublin 6, 01 – 4976095) tonight, unfortunately at an unspecified time. Admission is free. www.johnnyreynolds.com/

DUBLIN HEALTH RALLY
An umbrella group of health unions and patient campaign groups is planning a march for a better public health service on Sat 29 March. The group includes the Dublin Council of Trade Unions, medical and nursing organisations and families affected by the MRSA bug. The march will start at 14:30 (some sources say 15:00 and it is not clear which is the correct time) at Parnell Square and will go to Leinster House. The organisers are currently expecting up to 70,000 people at the march.

RESIGN, MR. AHERN!
While I am talking about protest marches, I should mention that protest on the 12 April so that you can put it in your calendar already. The format is not fully decided yet, but it will be a protest against the current Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, who has pocketed huge amounts of money from unknown sources, has lied in front of a Tribunal and seemed to have totally forgotten what accountability means. The initiative that demands his resignation is party independent and was formed via the facebook group “Resign, Mr Ahern” www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6285778826. I am not member of any party in Ireland and find it difficult to identify a party that I could fully support, but if something is a mess, it needs to be changed! And therefore I think this week’s march and the march on the 12 April definitely deserve support. Help if you can!

EARTH HOUR
On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.
In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour at 20:00 (local time) on 29 March. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights or computer screens when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.
No, nobody thinks that turning the light off for one hour changes the world, but it is all about creating awareness about energy consumption. So tell your friends and take part. At 20:00 on Saturday turn your lights off for an hour, check all appliances in your home and turn them off if possible. Once the hour is over, please think about which appliance NEEDS to be switched on or on standby and try to remind yourself during the year of the fact that every bit counts.

PUBLIC STAR GAZING – ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY
The Irish Astronomical Society invites to a Public Star Gazing: “Saturday 29 March 2008 at 20:00 is Earth Hour. Cities (including Dublin) across the globe are turning off their non-essential lights for one hour. To celebrate (if reasonable clear skies), we are holding a Public Star Gazing of the Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers at Sandymount, Dublin 4. From 20:00-22:00 at the Martello Tower Car Park (south side), Sandymount, Dublin 4. No Charge.
Sky watchers of the Irish Astronomical Society invite you to join them at the location and time mentioned above (provided that the skies are reasonably clear). A number of quality telescopes will be available for viewing the wonders of the heavens. The Glorious Ringed planet Saturn will be star of the show.

CONCERT FOR PEACE
On Sat 29 March from 20:00-22:00 the St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral is the venue for “Across the Bridge of Hope”, a free concert featuring the Warrington Male Voice Choir with Terry Waite, the Garda Band and Shirley Keane.
The Warrington Male Voice Choir is one of the oldest choirs in the United Kingdom, tracing its formation back to 1898. Since the IRA terrorist bombing of Warrington town centre in 1993, the choir has been particularly active in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, promoting reconciliation and an end to sectarian violence. Close links have been forged with Irish peace groups and choir events have come to symbolise hope, raising expectations, strengthening faith and reaching across divisions. The choir has encouraged ‘grass roots’ reconciliation activities with young people in the divided interface areas of West Belfast through its Warrington Fund, and is known in Ireland as a ‘Choir for Peace’.
In 1996, Terry Waite CBE became Patron in recognition of the humanitarian role adopted by the choir and, in turn, has encouraged performances in prisons, in England and in Ireland, to assist rehabilitation programmes. You can hear the choir singing here www.warringtonchoir.org.uk/Hear_the_choir.htm. At the concert there will be collection and the voluntary donations will be used for reconciliation projects. Thanks to Clare Dillon and Matt Davey, for telling me about this event!
Oh, and if you go to the concert, please make sure that you have turned lights and appliances off at home before you leave the house or apartment to help with the Earth Hour message.

TEMPLE BAR DESIGNER MART
Once again a reminder for an ongoing event: The Temple Bar Designer Mart at Cow’s Lane has been launched on the 22 March. This all new outdoor market located in the Old City area of Temple Bar showcases artwork and designer creations by Irish and Ireland-based designers. The variety of quality products at this outdoor market are endless including handcrafted hats , metal sculpture, photography, paintings, ceramics, furniture, jewellery, hand-bags, children’s clothing, textile toys and glass sculpture.
The Old City area of Temple Bar located 5 minutes from the centre of Temple Bar, between Parliament and Fishamble Street in the west end of Dublin’s Cultural Quarter (Close to Christ Church Cathedral). The Designer Mart is on every Sat from 10:00-17:00. In parallel the Temple Bar Food Market is (on Meeting House Square) on the same day and at the same time…but since I have mentioned that many times, you probably know it already. :-)

PILLS – SCIENCE GALLERY
In the context of the free Science Gallery exhibition “Pills” (until 12 April), the Science Gallery is organising two non-free events and at least the first one might interest some of you (I thought of Marta, Angela, Asier, Ara and a few more.):
“RAW: Do Anti-Depressants Work?” on Thurs 03 April at 19:00
A highly controversial study led Professor Irving Kirsch recently suggested that leading brands of antidepressants worked little better than placebos in all but the most depressed patients. Do we need to reconsider our use of anti-depressants or is this a highly irresponsible study that could jeopardise the lives of people suffering from depression? Join Professor Irving Kirsch along with a panel of experts to debate the issues. Tickets EUR 5.00 (10% discount for members)
“PILLS: Meet the People Behind the Pills” on Friday 04 April at 19:00.
You can join an informal conversation with Pharmacopoeia textile artist Susie Freeman and family doctor Liz Lee in the Science Gallery café. Tickets are EUR 5.00 (10% discount for members). Book tickets at www.sciencegallery.com/events
The Pills exhibition is described like this “The work of Pharmacopoeia probes our relationship with commonly prescribed drugs, revealing how dependent our society is on Pharmaceuticals, how ambivalent we feel about them and yet how casually we use them. Visit the Science Gallery and see pills in a way you’ve never seen them before.”
Exhibition admission is free and opening hours are 12:00-20:00 Tues-Fri and 12:00-18:00 Sat & Sun. The Science Gallery is closed on Mondays.

MACLEOD AGENCIES SAMPLE SALE
Macleod Agencies represents international fashion designers and they will have a Sample Sale on 29+30 March. The company says “Calling all fashionistas…on a budget, that is! Now is your chance to get your mittens on some designer clothes at wholesale prices – up to 90% off retail prices. Macleod Agencies is holding their seasonal sample sale. This exclusive sale, formerly Dublin’s best kept fashion secret, will be held for the first time for the general public at The Central Hotel, Exchequer St, Dublin 2 on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 March 2008 from 10:00-17:00. Brands included are Hoss Intropia, O.titude, Raasta, Suzie Wong, Bobi and Language Los Angeles.” (Since it is samples they are selling, don’t expect a wide range in sizes. Most samples will probably be size 10 or reasonably close to that.) Admission is free.

MONKEY MUSIC IN DUNDRUM
Monkey Music will introduce music to very young children in a way they can understand and enjoy. Monkey Music is a training concept (and a company) that introduces music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy. The company was founded in London in 1993 by Angie Davies, who developed the classes for her first newborn baby daughter. As a trained classical musician and experienced teacher, Angie was aware that all babies have an innate love of music and as a keen new mum she looked for local music classes to attend. Finding a lack of classes in the appropriate age group, she decided to write an original music curriculum that was fun and interactive for everyone!
On Sat 29 March and Sun 30 March, Monkey Music will offer free trial classes from 11:00-16:00 on Level 3 in Dundrum Town Centre (i.e. in the new shopping centre, not in the actual town centre :-S) To book your free trial session you can telephone 01-2989185 or email ann.maybin@monkeymusic.ie. www.monkeymusic.ie

VIVI TELLAS – PROJECT ART CENTRE INTERVIEW
On Thur 03 April at 17:00, Vivi Tellas will give a public interview in the Project Arts Centre in East Essex Street. Vivi Tellas is one of the most celebrated of Argentina’s theatre directors the director of the Sarmiento Theatre in Buenos Aires – the experimental wing of Argentina’s National Theatre. Tellas’ work has for many years been about putting theatre in contact with other worlds, and tracing theatrical elements (repetition, presence, the situation, the other’s gaze, the ritual, the text) in lives, situations or disciplines outside the theatre. More akin to documentary, her theatre is not an art of representation, but instead a presentation of ‘cases’. The first of these, My Mother and My Aunt (2003-2004) was a form of live portraiture based on the stories heard, always told the same way, since Tellas was a child. The performers were Tellas’ mother and aunt – the real ones – who unfolded family history in public. This was the beginning of The Archive Project. Based on this piece Tellas developed a workshop to share the experience. She comes to Dublin next week to lead a workshop, and as part of her visit, Project Arts Centre are delighted to host a public interview with her about her work as a theatre director, and the development of this new workshop technique. Please note: Tickets for this event are free and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. They may be booked in advance by calling 01 8819613/4. www.project.ie

DUBLIN HÄNDEL FESTIVAL
The Dublin Handel Festival (that should be Händel, with an “ä”!) is taking place from Sun 13 April – Fri 18 April. The Dublin Handel Festival is an annual event that takes place every April in Temple Bar and in adjacent areas to bring to life the connections between Georg Friedrich Händel and the City of Dublin through a week long programme that celebrates the cultural riches of the 18th century in a modern and contemporary context. Händel composed his “Messiah” in the summer of 1741 and premiered it in Dublin on the 13 April 1742. Messiah is Händel’s most famous creation and is among the most popular works in Western choral literature and the very well-known “Hallelujah” chorus is part of Händel’s Messiah.
The festival will include a programme of FREE concerts, talks, tours, interactive activities and family events; including a full-length, performance of the Messiah in Christ Church Cathedral by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir and the Orchestra of St Cecilia and the “Messiah on the Street” performance by Our Lady’s Choral Society and the National Sinfonia, conducted by Proinnsías Ó Duinn beside the original site where the Messiah received its world premiere in 1742.
All events are free, but some require tickets! Tickets for all ticketed events will be available for collection from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 from Sat 29th March. Some events will “sell” out very fast, so make sure that you check the programme (www.templebar.ie/docs/handelfestival08.pdf) and that you get your tickets soon. An area of the river at George’s Dock on Custom House Quay will be drained for the event, and a stage will be constructed – as well as a carnival area, a BodyTonic ToeJam area and another smaller stage – to mark the one-off event. Mike Skinner, aka The Streets will now headline this specially-constructed venue, instead of his mooted gig at the Olympia. Support comes from Mixmaster Mike, Maser and DJ Morgan. Tickets are free, but are allocated on a lottery basis. To be in with a chance of winning, you need to register at www.budweiser.ie now.

This Event Guide seems to be getting longer and longer again and I wonder what we will do when the high-season for events will start properly. Maybe it will turn into a new “War & Peace”? One member of the Event Guide Community recently called this weekly mail his new “bible”. Nice compliment, thanks! But I begin to wonder if he was referring to the size more than anything. Anyway, I hope you are not complaining about so many free events! ;-)

Enjoy the weekend!

Event Guide 40: Rush Hour Recital Competition, Flamenco Competition, Elvis Presley Story, Good Friday Party, Dundrum Freeze, World Pillow Fight, Farmleigh House, Science Gallery, Bright New Sounds

March 21st, 2008

Hi all!

Another busy week is coming to an end – pity, it was good one. :-) The Denny Big Day Out on Sunday around Merrion Square was great fun for kids and adults and the Ceili Mor on Monday was a great success. I “lost” some people that we met up with at St. Stephen’s Green (Apologies to you!!) but the Ceili was brilliant. Brian Lenehan (our senior “dance instructor”) got loads of people dancing and together with Declan Tarpey’s additional help, we had at some stage more than 80 people doing a Ceili from one side of the street to the other. Brilliant fun! If you didn’t make it this year, make sure you will come next year, we are already planning a “bigger and better” for 2009.

As well on Monday this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) was mentioned in the Irish Times! Conor Pope wrote in a very good article about how to save money. Titled “Have you money to burn?” Conor suggested “10 small steps which should leave more money in your pocket”. Among buying cheaper medicines, using free software, using libraries for getting books and Internet access, controlling phone cost, comparing prices and timing your holidays right, he wrote as his step 7:
“Free at last
Find more free stuff to do. There are hundreds of events happening around the country every week that won’t cost you a penny. Listings magazines are the traditional source of information about such things, but there’s also the Facebook Free Dublin guide. Run by Joerg Steegmueller, the e-mail digest of what’s on in Dublin contains a head-spinning amount of free stuff from writing workshops for foreigners and feminist walking tours to classical concerts in the Hugh Lane Gallery and astronomy lectures in Dunsink Observatory. It now has close to 1,000 members and at the time of writing was looking for a new name.”
Great article and thanks for mentioning the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Pity that we didn’t have the re-branding completed so that people would find the Event Guide easier, but maybe Conor will be able to mention us again in some future article.

The Easter weekend is traditionally a quieter weekend since many have left Dublin for their home towns outside the capital and due to the oddness of Good Friday as far as events are concerned. But I found a surprising number of events again and I hope you will enjoy them!

____Competition____________

If you are receiving this Event Guide for a while already you know this, but if you are a new subscriber (more join us literally EVERY day!) you should know that normally all events in this Guide are free. However events where the organiser makes a few tickets available for you to win, I am happy to mention as well and events that I am involved with do for admittedly rather selfish reasons slip through the “Free” rule as well. This week we have both!

RUSH HOUR RECITAL – CLASSICAL MUSIC
The Students’ Union of the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) are regularly organising a Rush Hour Recital. When it is in the RIAM in Westland Row it is free, but this time they have chosen a bigger and more prestigious venue, have some guest performers AND organise the event for the benefit of the “Impact Romania” charity. Consequently the concert is not free. However, because they have made a pair of tickets available for you to win AND since the Rush Hour Recitals are usually free, I am more than happy to include their event here.
This RIAM Student Union “Rush Hour Recital” will take place on Thur 27 March from 18:00-20:00 in the National Gallery in Nassau Street. The evening will be presented by Lyric FM’s, Liz Nolan and guest performers include the Irish musicians Finghin Collins (Piano) and Michael d’Arcy (Violin). Chris Rooney (RIAM SU Events Officer) will explain a bit about the charity on the evening of the event. Tickets are EUR 15 / EUR 10 and will be available at the door. If you want to win the pair of tickets, please send a mail with the subject “RIAM” and your mobile phone number in the body to dublineventguide@gmail.com. The mail has to be with me on 24 Mar (Easter Monday) at 13:00.
For more information check out www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=12196767535 or send a mail with your questions to RIAMSU@gmail.com. Going by a recent Rush Hour Recital that I visited, I can whole heartedly recommend the event!

FLAMENCO – WORKSHOP
The talented and extremely active Sólo Flamenco group is back from a 10 day Flamenco workshop in the South of Spain (Jerez de la Frontera) and is planning their new training term and a workshop in Dublin. For their next workshop in the DanceHouse in Foley Street (Dublin 1), Sólo Flamenco is making a pair of tickets available for you to take part in the Taster Class.
Sólo Flamenco are proud to present a series of workshops with acclaimed Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer and teacher Felipe de Algeciras. The next workshop takes place on Sun, 30 March between 12:00 and 17:00 in Studio 2 in DanceHouse.
The schedule for the day is
12:00-13:00 Taster
Open to students with no experience who want to learn about flamenco. Cost: EUR15
13:00-14:00 Beginners
Open to dancers with 6 to 18 months experience. Cost: EUR15
14:00-15:00 Technique
Open to all levels. Cost: EUR 15
15:00-17:00 Intermediate
Open to dancers with 18 months experience or more. Cost: EUR30
As a special offer a discounted price of EUR 50 is for students who are attending all three Beginners, Technique and Intermediate classes.
Each class is limited to 30 students, so advance booking is essential to secure a place.
For information and bookings e-mail info@flamencoyalegria.net or call Damian at 086 81 46 496. www.flamencoyalegria.net/?page_id=66
The pair of tickets that you can win is for the Taster class from 12:00-13:00 and you don’t have to know ANYTHING about Flamenco to go to this workshop. To be in with a chance to win, you have to send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “Flamenco” and your mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your e-mail has to be with me before 16:00 on Fri 28 March.
If you already have learned some Flamenco before make sure that you check out the new courses that Sólo Flamenco is offering.
“Term 2: An introduction to Flamenco – Technique” is a 12 week course and starts on 31 March (Mondays 20:30-21:30) in Studio 3. Cost: EUR 10 per class EUR 110 per term (12 weeks)
The course “Flamenco – Choreography” starts on 03 April (Thursdays 20:30-21:30) in Studio 3. Cost: EUR 10 per class – EUR 110 per term (12 weeks)
Classes are aimed at beginners. Studio 3 is limited to 12 places so be sure to reserve your place. www.flamencoyalegria.net/?page_id=57

ELVIS PRESLEY STORY – CONCERT
It is not a competition and not a free event, but this next event is one I am involved with and it will be great! :-) Some of you might know that I sing in the backing choir of the Elvis Tribute Band “Elvis The Way It Was”. And after showing our “Elvis Presley Story” last year to more than 5000 people in a two week run in the Tivoli Theatre, we are coming back with a one-night only event in the National Concert Hall in Earlsfort Terrace. On 03 April from 20:00, Kevin Doyle, The Way It Was Orchestra and the Graceland Gospel Singers will commemorate the life and music of Elvis Presley. The event is a concert that provides additional information with the help of pictures, video clips and voiceovers, it is not a musical. The show is in aid of St. Michael’s House, a charity providing facilities and services to over 1500 people with learning disabilities in Dublin City and County. And if you like Elvis’ music OR want to find out a bit more about this impressive performer, who had such a massive impact on the music industry and even on society, you should definitely come to the event. Price for the tickets is EUR 25 or EUR 15 and it can be booked via
www.nch.ie/Box-Office/Performances/The-Elvis-Presley-Story.aspx?date=03/04/2008&time=2000

GLASNEVIN CEMETERY – WALK
On Good Friday, the Glasnevin Cemetery Walking Tour will be back by popular demand. The interesting walking tour will take place on 21 March at 11:30 and at 14:30 (Duration  50 min) to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising. The tour will be presented by Shane MacTomais, the Cemetery’s official guide.  This Good Friday take a step back in time and remember the Easter Rising with Glasnevin Cemetery’s Walking Tours – back by popular demand! The tour will take in the graves of some of Ireland’s most influential historical figures, including Charles Stewart Parnell, Maude Gonne, Daniel O’Connell, Eamonn DeValera, Michael Collins, as well as the thousands of ordinary men and women who have found their final resting place at Glasnevin Cemetery. The tours leave from the main entrance and will offer an insight into the history Ireland’s largest cemetery.

URBAN OUTFITTERS – GOOD FRIDAY PARTY
The non-sensical Good Friday Pub Closure can be easily circumvented by a private party and Urban Outfitters in Temple Bar are making use of the free evening that most people have on Good Friday. Their “Power to the People” party is a “gig and exhibition of revolutionary makers, viewers and thinkers”. Admission to the party is free and the Coors Light that will be available at the party is complimentary (After all you are not allowed to sell any alcohol on that day!). BUT you have to request admission by e-mail to mail@anewspace.info if you would like to attend or by dropping in to the shop during the day. The party takes place on Fri 21 March from 18:00-21:00 in Urban Outfitters in Temple Bar.
Special guest band is “The Dirty Epics” and the DJ is “Goldy (Ufeari)”. The exhibition will show works by Warhol, Banksy, Jim Fitzpatrick, D’Face, Dolk, Will St Leger, Canvas, Derek Hess, Static, Aparadus, Print Mafia, Blek Le Rat
And many more
You will be looking at wonderful portraits of John Lennon (Warhol), Malcom X (Obey) and Che (Jim Fitzpatrick) and sitting on the others side of the table expected to see George Bush (An?) and Bertie Ahern (Will St Leger). The audience at this summit of minds will be made up of some of our heroes Johnny Cash (Streeter), Sid Vicious (Apparados) as well as mysterious powers such as Queen Elizabeth (D”Face), Churchhill (Banksy) and Oppenheimer (Apparados).
It seems that there will be a 20% discount on all Urban Outfitters products as well. So, if you have no other plans for tonight, go to the Urban Outfitters party!

WAY OF THE CROSS
The Communion and Liberation group “CL Ireland” (www.clireland.com) is inviting to the Way of the Cross in Phoenix Park from the Wellington Monument to the Papal Cross. The walk starts on 21 March at 12:30 and is lead by the Diarmuid Martin (Archbishop of Dublin).

THISISNOTASHOP – EXHIBITION
“5 O n A D a y O u t… and other stories” is the title of an exhibition in Thisisnotashop in 26 Benburb Street, Dublin 7. The exhibition runs from 19-23 March only and is open from 12:00-19:00 daily.
The organiser describes “5OADO is the group name of a talented mix of emerging, Dublin-based artists, currently in their 3rd year at the National College of Art and Design. Working across a variety of media and from disparate perspectives, the 5OADO cooperative’s diverse aesthetic groundings resonate a singular energy.”

DUNDRUM FREEZE – DUBLIN IMPROV
Dublin Improv, the Dublin “branch” of the international Improv movement that carries out pre-planned “missions” which usually involve socially awkward or unusual situations, has recently done the Grafton Street Freeze and a more low key Birthday party event on Thursday morning on the DART. Both events went very well. I took part in the Grafton Street Freeze where approx. 150 people froze for 5 minutes in whatever position they were in. YouTube and the Dublin Improv facebook group have loads of movies and pictures about this event and I have to say, that it was great fun to be part of such a ad-hoc art installation. A big freeze is very easy to organise and is very very effective and consequently a few more “freeze events” will be carried out. One of them is taking place on Sat in the new shopping centre in Dundrum “Dundrum Town Centre”. Everybody is invited to take part and it would be great to get loads of people involved.
The meeting for the event is on Sat 22 March at 14:00 at the Balally LUAS stop. After a short briefing and synchronisation everybody will make his/her way to the shopping centre to be in place for the appointed time.
The organisers describe “This mission has been inspired by www.improveverywhere.com, a group that successfully froze Grand Central Station for five minutes. The effect of 200 people caught still, like a snap-shot, confuses and surprises the general public. Once the five minutes have passed the members continue on with their actions as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. It is planned that the scene will be filmed by a number of people
www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=25475730832&ref=nf (You need to be a facebook member.)

WORLD PILLOW FIGHT
Unfortunately at the same time as the Dundrum Freeze, another event will take place in Dublin. Saturday is the International Pillow Fight Day ;-) (www.pillowfightday.com) and in more than 26 cities around the world a pillow fight will take place on that day. In Dublin, the Dublin Couchsurfers invite to a pillow fight at 14:00 next to “the best pair of pillows in Ireland” i.e. Molly Malone’s busty statue. The fight will go on for only 15 minutes and the rules are described here
www.couchsurfing.com/meetings.html?mid=9042. I have to admit that I am torn between the two events, but will probably go to Dundrum. Had the organisers known about each others event, I assume they would have coordinated the times somehow, but because they coincide you will have to choose.

PILLS – SCIENCE GALLERY
A new exhibition at the Science Gallery opens on Saturday 15 March and runs until 12 April. The work of Pharmacopoeia probes our relationship with commonly prescribed drugs, revealing how dependent our society is on Pharmaceuticals, how ambivalent we feel about them and yet how casually we use them. EASTER SUNDAY PARADE
If you are in the city centre on Easter Sunday and suddenly stumble across a military parade that would be more fitting for cold war Moscow or East Berlin, be shocked, but don’t be worried! It is just the totally inappropriate (in my opinion) way the Irish Government thinks the Easter Rising from 1916 should be celebrated. I agree with the fact that celebration should take place, but a military parade with tanks, weapons and fly-overs is really not appropriate anymore in this day and age.
The parade, which includes Army, Navy, Aer Corps, UN Veterans, Gardai and an Aer Corps fly past begins at 11:45 at Dublin Castle. It will follow Dame Street to Westmoreland Street and will stop there for a while (!!!). Once the president (Mary McAleese) has arrived at the General Post Office (GPO) in O’Connell Street, the main ceremony will begin in front of the GPO at 12:00. The national flag will be lowered on the roof of the GPO, an army officer will read the 1916 proclamation, then the Taoiseach invites President to lay a wreath, the President lays a wreath, a minute’s silence is observed in memory of all those who died, the national flag is raised to full mast and the national anthem is sung. After this, the parade continues through O’Connell Street on to Parnell Square.
The Parade can be viewed as it passes through Dame Street, Westmoreland Street and O’Connell Street and large screens will be placed at strategic locations along the route so that all aspects of the GPO Ceremony and Parade will be visible from individual locations. www.taoiseach.gov.ie/eng/index.asp?docID=2515
If you are not sure what the Easter Rising from 1916 was, have a look here (www.taoiseach.gov.ie/eng/index.asp?locID=468&docID=2520)
it describes the circumstances well and tells you why it has such a relevance in Irish history. What it does not describe is why a military parade is the appropriate way to celebrate the fight for freedom by insurgents and civilians against a military force. Odd!
For even more information about the Easter Rising, you should go to the National Museum in Collins Barracks. A special Easter Rising Commemorative Exhibition will provide all details and background. The Museum is open on Sat 10:00-17:00 and on Sun 14:00-17:00, but will be closed on Good Friday and on Easter Monday. www.museum.ie

______Monday_________________

I searched for a while, but couldn’t find anything interesting for Monday! So, use the day to relax and enjoy the second Monday off this month. I could get used to that!!

GARDINER STREET GOSPEL CHOIR on RADIO1
You might remember that I was at a concert of the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir last week. This concert has been recorded by RTE Radio 1 for their Monday evening “In Concert” series and will be transmitted on Easter Monday from 21:00-22:00. The live concert was brilliant and while the radio programme will be somewhat different because wit will be edited, it still promises to be great. The concert was a spiritual look at Easter whereby reflections and stories were interspersed with songs.

At the beginning of the week, I was wondering if I would deliver my first really slim Event Guide this week, due to the Easter Week, but I managed to find some events for you and while there are no real high-profile events this week, I am sure you won’t be bored. ;-) As you might have seen, this is Issue 40 of the Event Guide and my goal is still to reach 1600 people with this e-mail once we have arrived at Issue 68. So keep spreading the word! :-)

Enjoy the weekend!
