Dublin Event Guide

Hi all!

I am late this week! Apologies! Work and a gig last night kept me busy and didn’t give me chance to write this weeks Event Guide until now, but hopefully even at this late stage it will still reach some of you.

The Open House was great last week. I was on top of Liberty Hall, in Customs House, in Government Buildings and in the Department of Foreign Affairs. If you missed it, make sure that you don’t next October! :-) If you did go to some of the buildings let me know of they were worth it, so that I can see them next year. ;-)

This week is bank holiday weekend and typically the October bank holiday weekend is not the liveliest as far as events are concerned. So I had to do a bit of digging to find some this week…and was surprised how much is on! Would you have known about these events without this Event Guide? Be honest! :-P

The Dublin Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF!!! ;-) ) is on this weekend (www.deafireland.com) and there are a number of free events around it.  On Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon, there will be various DJs and live acts in the Globe in George’s Street (17:00-23:00).
Another DEAF event is “de Pong Game” a projection and public interactive installation in the Globe and in Georges Street from 19:00-23:00 on Fri, Sat + Sun. It is a giant version of the computer game where you have a moving platform at the bottom and ball bouncing around that you need to bounce of your platform. The twist is that the “screen” is the wall of  houses in George’s Street and obstacles on the “screen” are windows and building features. People can play the game and I have to say it looks very interesting. So if you are in that area, have a look!
And a third free DEAF event: On Sunday in the Uki Yo Restaurant in 7 Exchequer Street, loads of artists will perform in the restaurant and in the Karaoke Booths. It is free and runs from 16:00 until 19:00.
There are many ticketed events as well, have a look at the website if you are interested.

Another Festival is the Hallowfest07 (www.hallowfest.ie). In Tallaght in the grounds of South Dublin County Council, County Hall the Sunday (14:00-17:00) will be full of Halloween related activities. (Games, Mask Making and other Workshops, Children’s Halloween Parade, Fire Jugglers, Clowns, Face Painters and a Fireworks Display at the Institute of Technology in Tallaght).
On Monday (10:00-14:00) the activities will move to the Hell Fire Club in the Dublin Mountains. There is a children’s treasure hunt and a spooky walk and more. Park and Ride is available from the County Hall in Tallaght at 09:45.
If you have children or nephews and nieces, you HAVE to go there! Preferably with them, though! :-)

The Hugh Lane Gallery concert this Sunday at noon is “Zwolfzungen – The Noise of Language” with Alessandro Bosetti (www.melgun.net) Admission is free.

On Monday is the Dublin City Marathon. The “Elite Ladies” will start at 08:45 and the men will start at 09:10. Mad early if you ask me, but  I wouldn’t reach the finish anyway. ;-) There are EUR 100k prizes available, so you can be certain that a illustrious field or brilliant runners will be attracted. 10,000 (!!!!) runners are expected!!! That is SOME spectacle! The course map is here adidasdublinmarathon.ie/map-2007.pdf The start is in Baggot Street and the finish at Merrion Square. Have a look and cheer the runners on – despite the early morning time. :-P

And a few more events for next week:

The Contemporary Music Centre (www.cmc.ie) will show a performance of “New Sound Worlds 2007″ on Tues (30/10) at 20:00 in the “Printing House” in Trinity College. The composer is Gerald Barry and the work is described as “Swinging tripes and trillibubkins” a second composer is Fergus Johnston and his work is called “Éagaoineadh”. Admission is free.

On Wednesday (31/10) the National Museum in Kildare Street will feature a talk about “Medieval Ireland. Castles in Medieval Ireland.” by David Sweetman (formerly Chief Archaeologist). He will talk at 13:00 and a second time at 18:30.

Now if you have no other plans for Wednesday yet, can I remind you a last time that the Brazilian guitar duo “Fernando Lima & Cecilia Siqueira” will be in the Mill Theatre in Dundrum at 20:00 on Wednesday 31st October (Booking and information at 01-2969340, Tickets: EUR 15).

And finally the BIG day this week (especially for the kids) is on Thursday (01/11) from 19:00 until 21:00 the Samhain (Halloween) Parade will take place. It will start at Parnell Square, will then go down O’Connell St, into Westmoreland St and eventually into the outside area of Temple Bar. The official line is “Expect a spectacle of dancers, dragons, monsters, druids, ghosts, samba performers, drummers, street performers and anyone else willing to show off (many come to Dublin from all over the country to take part). It all wraps up with a noisy fireworks finale.”

So, a “little-eventful weekend” turns into a weekend plus a few days of next week packed full of possible FREE activities once you start looking for them!

Hi all!

You thought this weekend will be boring? Not so!!! I have a variety of events for you again and hope that everyone finds at least ONE thing out of the more than 80 (!!!) events this weekend.

An amazing event is taking place this weekend. It nearly slipped through my fingers, but Anna V. reminded me thankfully this evening of it. The event is called “Open House Dublin 2007″. Open House uses the city as a live exhibition of structures and spaces. Last year more than 10,000 people participated in the programme, which resulted
in the establishment of the largest architecture event in Ireland. Interesting buildings and other architectural structures will be open for viewing and entry is free. Some require tickets and it is likely that all tickets are gone, but try it anyway and choose non-ticketed location to visit if no more tickets are available. The website is www.architecturefoundation.ie/openhouse and a detailed program is downloadable from there.
Interesting buildings that can be visited are the Customs House, City Hall, King’s Inn, Government Buildings, Iveagh House (Dept. of Foreign Affairs), Mansion House and the OPW Building on Stephen’s Green among MANY others.
A total of 79 houses and tours will be available over the weekend! It is like a Culture Night for buildings and architecture! ;-) Don’t miss out!

In connection with Open House, Temple Bar is showing “Temple Bar 15″ on Friday and Saturday evening. Temple bar 15 was in 2006 a retrospective photographic exhibition, shown in the Irish Architectural Archive in 2006 as part of the 15 year anniversary celebrations for Temple Bar. This weekend it will move from the gallery walls to the big screen on Meeting House Square.
You will get the opportunity to transport yourself back in time to Temple Bar prior to its regeneration through photography!

This weeks “Sunday at noon” in the Hugh Lane Gallery is a performance of Music for Flute, Viola and Harp (William Dowdall, flute, John Lynch, viola and Andreja Malir, harp).

Vaveeva.com, the “complete survival guide to living and working in Ireland” is organising an exhibition in the Main Hall of the RDS for us foreigners: “New Communities Expo 2007″ (www.vaveeva.com/expo/). On more than 50 stands it is planned to provide information about and events around Business Start Up Advice, Personal Finance, Health and Well-Being, Fashion and Beauty, Multi-lingual Seminars, Kids Corner, Job Opportunities in Public & Private Sector, Model Search (Male & Female), Art & Photography Exhibition, Irish Traditional Music Session. The idea is a good one, but before you go I suggest you check the website to see if in your opinion the exhibitors (click on Exhibitors) will be able to keep that promise. The expo runs from 11:00 – 18:00 on Sat and Sun and admission is free.

If you remember last weeks Event Guide, you might remember a competition. Raffa Abarca is promoting the brilliant Brazilian guitar duo “Fernando Lima & Cecilia Siqueira” who will be in the National Concert Hall (John Field Room, at 13:05 on Friday 26th October – Tickets for EUR 20 on sale at 01-4170000 – no booking fee), in the Mill Theatre in Dundrum (in front of the Dundrum Shopping Centre at 20:00 on Wednesday 31st October – booking and information at 01-2969340, tickets are EUR 15) and in the Wicklow Parish Church (Church Hill, Wicklow Town at 20:00 on Saturday 03 November – Tickets are EUR 15 and are on sale from Wicklow Tourist Office – 0404-69117).
